Yes, and there is a great deal of evidence to support his existence. That is how we know he was real.

So you got some automatic slams, but that is okay. They are right, but not informative.

Do you believe that the ancient Greek God, Zeus? I am guessing not. Yet there are a lot of written records that mention him, as well as paintings that depict him. There is, therefore, some documentary support for his existence.

Same with the Christian God and the same for George Washington.

The difference is that no one claims that George Washington is an infinitely powerful being that transcends time and space and created the universe. They claim he was a normal man. His existence was noted by peers. Documents written in his own hand have been preserved. There is a consistent body of evidence that supports his existence.

For Jesus, there is only a small body of evidence that supports his existence and it is extremely inconsistent where it does not obviously plagiarize from other writers. The canonical Gospels diverge from each other in the details and the non-canonical gospels are even more divergent.

In fact, I would say there is more proof for the existence of Harry Potter than there is for Jesus.

George Washington was real. However the mythmakers have been quite busily rewriting history there too. He never cut down his daddy's cherry tree and refused lying to avoid punishment. He allowed religion and accomodated it in his troops but was not a religious man himself. He did advocate that the congress keep religion as a method of controlling the nation but advised against creating a state religion.

In fact the G.Washington of Popular History was invented largely by one preacher (Parson Mason Weems) writing a biography of the American Presidents.

So yes to an actual American General and President.

NO to the larger than life SuperGeorge.

Yes because others knew him personally and his existence is proven... Just like Christ (that was what you were leading at wasn't it).

There were people who knew Christ personally and have also proven his existence. The thing is, he was alive much before GW so people have a hard time making the connection and believing that the documentation of Christ's existence is real.

I'm sure you have either grandparents or great grandparents that you never met/didn't know.... weren't they real? So since you've never met my neighbor and don't know him, is he not real?

What about your great great great grandkids? Won't they be real? You've what does not meeting or knowing someone have to do with them being real?

George Washington was a fictional character that never really existed. Everything remaining today of him is really just a bunch of stage props and costumes. He was a STORY!!!

There is NO PROOF that he ever existed!

There is tangible proof that Washington was a real person. We have copious documents he penned, first hand paintings of him, letters describing him written by eyewitnesses, as well as many historical artifacts that have been maintained over the decades. There are also the direct results of the deeds he did, which we can observe with our own eyes.

By contrast, some historical figures are much more dubious and lacking in evidence, but for Christ's sake, I can't think of one!

His name appears on historical documents. His signature appears on historical documents. His picture is shown in several places and those paintings were dated to be at the same time as George Washington.

If you are trying to make an analogy for Jesus then please show me where the name Jesus appears on any historical document or even why the new testament was written long after Jesus' supposed resurrection according to biblical scholars, of which most are religious.

Yes, he was. It is in documentation and very easy to access. There is proof, some of his items still exist today. But whose to say he was really the first president, whose to say that was his real name? He was a real person, whoever he was.

There are contemporary accounts of his life. His writings still exist. The home that he owned still exists. You know where he's buried. Shall I go on?

You just have to have FAITH and trust the history books.

Logic like that is why no one takes the religious seriously, congrats, you've furthered the steryotype, that the religious majority is ignorant. Your cause is lost.
