Why is religion such a big thing?
2009-09-05 23:13:17 UTC
K ,so I was born into a world that believes in nothing but religion , I can't stand it, I think it's so freaking stupid and pointless, there is no proof that it even exisist , It's like saying there is a giant floating meatball flying around , you can't unprove that , if you ask me its the same thing with this thing called " a god " it dosen't exist and people are so ignorant that they get to the point where the go to war for just religion , countless people dying for a belief that hasen't bin proven and that can't be proven , can you belive that I saw something so sad on the new where a son told her mother he was gay and she kicked him out to the street and told him he was no longer her son , why ? because this idiot women said that in the bible gays are not accepted , she cried and said "what am I going to do now ?!?!?!" now I'm not saying that I like gays and bi's but who am I to judge someone , and who are you to judge some one ? idk , tell me the truth guys do you really feel religion is important ? do you really believe there is a supreme being controling every single little thing that occures on this planet ? I think you can say I'm an athiest but can you blame me , think deeply , don't you guys see it aswell , religion isn't real , its made up , there is no god .... ( BTW sorry for any mispelled things )

Well, religion is such a big part of society and people simply because it is so old and so ingrained in who we are as people. We as humans have always tried to find ways to explain things that aren't there, so much so in this case that when we get science to prove or almost prove an idea many of us still stick to that crutch of a god. It is the idea of beliefs, of 'this is how I live my life' and also, I think we just love drama but more destructively, war.

That's is some question you got there!

Actually, back in the earliest civilization, like Mesopotamia and Egypt, people believe in many Gods/Goddess because they think that Gods and Goddess will help their land and protect them from disease.

Now do you see that religion doesn't have meanings at all. It started out because people want to know their origin back then they don't want science to tell them what they are and where they come from.

You are right and there's not religion what so ever. It started out because of peer pressure.

If other people think it's gross for a son to be gay then many other will follow their example. It always works, not matter what.

Imagine, if you are the only one who disagree with the topic, would you step out of the circle? No, you would rather join with the group rather than be by yourself. See that what I mean by peer pressure. That's how religion and ethics came to be.

The reason religion is so popular is because it's a guide to life. I mean that's pretty much as simple as I can put it. And when all these followers are united they get tied up in more earthly issues than "peace and love and all goodness" and they do what humans do which is fight. I think religion is important insomuch as there is a lot of good that comes out of it in form of charity, service to the public, and improving the general well being of billions of people's lives. I for one think churches are hypocritical and harmful in some ways, and no I don't believe in any kind of supreme being.

Other poster has a point money makes lots of things big . But humans need a crutch to help with the ending of life. Not possible to make the exit without it. before you go you may fall for it too. But I agree with you somewhat . I just have had it with all the hypocrisy of all the religions ,. All preach peace and such and do nothing but Death and war. Protect child molesters and rapists who knows what else . Why? to Save face . So it wouldn't look like that was spawned at their church. That is what has turned Me from Religion.

You don't understand. You are using flawed human actions as an impeachment of God. If you look at Jesus, he loved everyone. Love the person, hate the sin.

The wars argument is tired and erroneous.

Religion is such a big thing because it's real. Why would anyone chose to have a responsibility to anyone but themselves if it weren't?

Notice how many people on this site don't want that responsibility? Why would anyone chose otherwise if God didn't exist?

I understand you are hurting. It is easy to blame God . . . oh, sorry, people who falsely believe in "god" for your troubles. God isn't to blame.

God does not micromanage the world, he gave us a free will -- which includes doing really bad things. He created us out of His love, with hopes that we would chose, out of free will, to love Him back.

What satisfaction would there be to create us, then force us to love him, and run our lives like marionettes?

Yes, God exists. Yes, God is all-powerful and all-knowing. He knows the hairs on your head by name. He loves you. Some day, hopefully, you will be able to separate human flaws from God Himself.

religion is two things:

1. a way to control and manipulate people.

2. a desire and hope that there is always someone bigger and stronger , a father figure to help you and fight for you and make justice.

Yes, I have not seen any proof, I like the floating meatball example. I wish with all my heart if was true , but my common sense says no. religion is a big thing because it takes away our faults(relieves our conscience), makes us feel better(holier than though) than other people, expains what happens when we die(everyone is scared of the unknown) and we can always 'tattle' to God if we have been wronged (like a father)

its a big deal because we all want it to be true.

God and Jesus Christ are not religion. They are reality. Atheism a philosophical attempt to redefine reality to a realm of no consequences for their soul no matter what evil they do.

Atheism is a religion where the only promise is, if you remain an atheist and heaven is real, you won't be getting to go there when you die because you forsook the very God who gave you life and denied His Free Gift of Salvation, Jesus Christ, who you only had to receive and believe in.

what a stupid religion atheism is!

Religion is a collaboration between fear and superstition.

With the right application, it equals power and wealth. Some are able to tame 'the beast' and use it to their advantage to secure the future of their generations.

No mater if someone is gay or green... a being is a being, and for now they're human. Be cool with each other for the sake of survival if not for God.

faith is one among those "massive ingredient" because of the fact human beings are a complicated species that require (and seek for out) purpose and meaning of their lives. And we could face it, there is little or no in existence that we can do, be, have etc. that doesn't sooner or later loose this is meaning or charm (don't have faith me ask somebody dealing with a "mid-existence disaster"). so some distance as your opinion that a extraordinarily good potential does not exist, rationally you may desire to admit that it is not something greater suitable than "in basic terms your opinion". not having data that something exists isn't data that something does not. most of the in basic terms right scientist's believed via faith what they won't prepare to have somebody else discover the data to their theories (or intelligently disprove them) many years or century's later. the authentic question right this is why could desire to you be bothered approximately individuals dropping their time praying and obsessing over something that's "not genuine"... could this is a greater efficient use of their time to spend it in rehab battling an habit because of the fact existence regarded empty to them? so which you think of this is stupid... some human beings think of "certainty television" exhibits are stupid (why are they one among those massive ingredient :)!

Let's say you are right, Christians are wrong. What have you gained?

Lots of partying they missed out on. Casual sex they missed out on. The freedom to divorce, etc. So they missed out on hang-overs, DWI's, abortions, STD's, broken relationships, jail time, etc. Really, you've gained nothing, but some short term fun.

If you are right and Christians are wrong, Christians may have missed out, but I'd like to think they actually gained in this life by holding to Bible teachings. Certainly they've lost nothing.

Now, what if they are right and you are wrong?

The Christians would be in heaven with God, and you'd be spending eternity in "torment".

So it appears the Christians have everything to gain, and nothing to lose. And non-believers have nothing to gain, and everything to lose.

Religion is a big thing to people runnin it. They brainwash people. The people do what the leaders want em too (cuz if u don't the big bad god will be mad....even tho the big bad god had nothin to do with the stupid books, etc).

Then of course u are induced to pay em money too. (and the big bad god will reward u later...when u are done gone of couse).

What is big for someone might not be big for you. Just because you choose not to follow religion does not mean that the whole world will agree with you and vice versa.
2009-09-05 23:18:45 UTC
It's not important, but some think it is. The only reason people believe in religion is for a "hope" that they will be rewarded, and get "anything they want in heaven". (sounds like a child? lol)

If it's so stupid and pointless, then don't waste your time talking about how stupid and pointless it is. It seems to be doing its job.

It's cool that there are atheists out there who are interested in religion, but don't you think it's a waste of tme to say that it's so stupid and idiotic?

It's stupid to believe that leprechauns exist, but you don't see me complaining about it. Why are you complaining about things you don't believe exists?

well i wouldnt say its a big thing as to how it was back in the day. it just depends on what kind of family u are born in to. if u choose not to believe it then thats ur desicion but as long as ur living under ur parents roof u might not have a say in it unless u talk to them about it.

im sorry i could have agreed with you about 5 years ago until he sent me that picture on the side of my answer its of my mom taking a picture and angels are all around her just look at it blow it up if you dont notice anything or deny it then we know whose name isnt in the book of life so jump on the band wagon unless you want your meeting with god to end with him saying leave i never knew you.
