If the Sabbath is the 7th day, why do Christians worship and rest on the 1st day, Sunday?

Jesus said only people who obey my commandments will enter Heaven. So does he require us to worship on Saturday? However, How can we know that the 7th day in genesis 2 is a Saturday?

>> why do Christians worship and rest on the 1st day, Sunday?

First, you should qualify your question as why "most" Christians worship and "some" also rest on the 1st day, Sunday? You see, not all Christians observe Sunday and, of those whom observe Sunday, only a few observe it as a sabbath of rest. Most Christians may observe a morning of worship but the afternoon is given over to the same worldly activities which epitomize any other common day of the week.

Second, the honest answer to your question, though, is that they observe Sunday as a day of worship because the Catholic Church established that day and most Christian denominations just kept right on blindly observing Sunday as a day of worship. They wrest a lot of Scriptures trying to justify the day, but the Catholic church is really the only source of that Man-made tradition.

The Catholic Church substituted a lot of other of God's Laws, too, and completely did away with still others. The only thing most Christian denominations got right was Righteousness by Faith -- otherwise, they are all still daughters of their (not "the") mother church -- Roman Catholicism. The only true rule of faith is a "Thus saith the Lord" and you won't find one of those for Sunday -- but you WILL find one of those both for the Seventh-day [Saturday] Sabbath and for all Mankind being bound by it.

God bless.

Hello, there are 100's of scriptures to surpport the sabbath being saturday. Both old and new testiment. I will give u the one that everyone knows but really don't talk about and it will blow all unbelievers out the water...lol. Jesus died on a friday and raised on a sunday. Even sunday believers say this, but WHY earily sunday morning. It is because not even God would raise his son on the sabbath. It was not to change the day to sunday it was to respect the sabbath. We are not to keep OTHER SABBATHS of man creation. Why becouse God said so "period". No if , ands, or buts about it. The world does what is popular and so are the churches. Read the last book in the bible and the last page, which is revelations 22:14. The ONLY PEOPLE that have RIGHT to the tree of LIFE is his COMMANDMENT KEEPING PEOPLE. lol...no one can argue with these and if they try they end up sounding stupid. One more thing, Why is it that people agree on all the commandments but the sabbath. Remember God said the sabbath is a sign that u are my child and that u follow me. So that means that if we don't follow then what does that make us..???. We are all created by God but only his children or sheep follow him. Thanks for hearing me out.

There are about 13 common reasons but they are NOT supported by the Bible.

I will explain each of the 13 reasons below it may be a little long, but it will cover all the reasons. I do not want to offend anyone with what I say but I have to say what the Bible says.

1.The early church changed

NO WHERE in the Bible does the early church say “The new day of worship is Sunday” There is NO verse in the Bible to support this.

The early church kept the Sabbath

The apostles kept the Sabbath

Acts 13:14

Acts 13:42

Acts 13:44

Acts 16:13

Acts 17:2

Acts 18:4

the Gentiles kept the Sabbath

Acts 13:42

Acts 17:1-4

Acts 18

2.Sunday is the new Sabbath because of the resurrection

No verse in the Bible says worship on Sunday due to the Resurrection. God said that Baptism is symbol of the death and resurrection of Christ

Col 2:12

Rom 6:3-4

Gal 3:27

3.Jesus fulfilled the law so the Sabbath is gone

Matt 5:17

"Do NOT THINK that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I HAVE NOT come to abolish them but to fulfill them.

does fulfill mean do away with or end

"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to "do away" with them.

Isn’t that the contradictory?

4.We can’t tell which day

So, the ENTIRE Jewish Nation all over the ENTIRE world woke up one morning and EVERY one of them forgot which day was the Sabbath?

That is not logical

The change of the calendar had no effect on the weekly cycle

The US Naval Observatory and the Royal Observatory both confirm the 7th day Sabbath(Saturday) is the SAME Sabbath that Jesus kept.

Mark 16 says that Jesus rose the day after the Sabbath. We all know Jesus rose on Sunday... so what day is the Sabbath?

Some people say “God didn’t name the days Sunday, Monday, Tuesday etc so we don’t have to keep it.”

Thats true he named them day 1, day 2, day 3 etc. So if I go to someone who speaks Spanish and say "Domingo" they know I mean "Sunday" and when God says "Day one" he means "Sunday". Therefore when God says the Seventh day no one can deny he means Saturday

5.It does not matter which day WE choose

God did not say "Pick a day to worship" He said "THE" 7th day is "THE" Sabbath. The word "THE" means a specific item.

The first person to say "It doesn't matter how we worship God" is Cain. Cain said "It doesn't matter how we worship God as long as we give something God will accept it. God does not care as long as you give and call it holy. Don't be legalistic Abel."

Was he right?

Is God specific about what He says.

6.It was only for the Jews, or The Jewish Sabbath is Saturday and the Christian Sabbath is Sunday

The Sabbath was given to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden 1000 yrs before the first JEW was born Gen 2:1-3 if they were Jews we all are Jews and STILL need to keep the Sabbath

There is NO SUCH THING as "The Jewish Sabbath and the Christian Sabbath". There is ONLY ONE Sabbath day regardless of religion, race, nationality or language. The 7th day Sabbath does not belong to the Jews it belongs to God, "I am Lord of the Sabbath" Jesus said. In addition "The seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord" Ex 20:8-11

7.Sunday has always been the Sabbath

This contradicts the Mark 16 which says Jesus rose the day after the Sabbath on the first day of the week.

Yahoo won't let me post the entire 13 reasons but you can find them here

I have to comment on what brother Joe P said

is it legalism to obey God, when God says don't steal and someone says I don't steal because God says not to (commandment 7), are they legalistic? what about keeping any of the other commandments is that legalism?

God told the Israelites to march around Jericho a specific number of times if they had done it once would they have obeyed God? Was it legalism to do exactly as God said? Jos 6

Naman the leper was told to wash in the Jordan river 7 times before he was healed was it legalism to obey. What if he had only washed once would he have been healed?

Legalism is believing you are saved by keeping the law. We are saved by Grace(Rom 6:23) and not by the law. But just as sure as no one enters heaven based only on keeping the law NO ONE will enter who knowingly and willfully breaks the law. James 1:14-16

Sunday is not Gods day, the Sabbath day is. Everybody knows the Sabbath is Saturday. Argue all you want, the Bible still says it's the Sabbath. Keep Gods commands. Keep the Sabbath. Jesus kept the Sabbath, and told us to follow his example, and that's good enough for me.

To add to what many of my friends on here have already stated regarding the truth about the Sabbath being from sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday--Sunday was a pagan holy day to worship the sun god. He had many names, depending on what part of the Roman empire you came from...Helios, Apollo, and Tammuz...all of these were incorporated into the national religion. Wherever the Romans went to conquer, rather than coerce the people into accepting their religion, they adopted the conquered religion and adapted it to fit the needs of the masses. Before that time, in an ancient language, that sun god had another name, Lucifer.

When we observe the Sabbath as Yeshua the Messiah did, we pay homage to our Creator, the Son of Righteousness. When we observe the "man-made" "Lord's Day" or Deis Solis (Venerable Day of the Sun), we pay homage to the Sun, the usurper...Son of Perdition, Satan.

"If you love ME, keep MY Commandments," said Jesus.

There are actual ways of finding out which day is really what day it is by using astronomy..

But the Saturday is the 7th day and according to the Bible the 7th day is the Sabbath which we are meant to keep holy, the Sunday worship is man made..

To worship our Creator, the God of Israel, is to observe His Sabbath as a day of rest on the 7th day of the week.

> Today "saturday" is recognized as the 7th day of the week by most of the modern world with the Sabbath beginning from friday sunset to saturday sunset. The 7th day was established perpetually since creation.

> Most "Christians" do not acknowledge their Creator as the God of Israel and hide their eyes from His Sabbaths, plural, both weekly and annually:

Isa 30:11 Get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.

Ezek 22:26 "Her priests have done violence to My Torah and have profaned My holy things; they have made no distinction between the holy and the profane, and they have not taught the difference between the unclean and the clean; and they hide their eyes from My sabbaths, and I am profaned among them.

> Being separated from the Messiah outside of the "commonwealth of Israel" there is no hope in this world:

Eph 2:12 remember that you were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.

> There is one Torah [Law] for the children of Israel and those who choose to worship their God:

Num 15:16 One law and one manner shall be for you, and for the stranger that sojourneth with you.

Lev 19:34 But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am YHWH your God.

Your question is spot on. The sabbath was celebrated on the last day of the week - Saturday. Changing it to the first day of the week because Christ died on a sunday does not stand up to scrutiny. God instituted the Sabbath and nowhere in the bible does it say that it was changed to a Sunday.

Observance of Sabbath days and years was not a part of first-century Christianity. It was not until 321 C.E. that Constantine decreed Sunday to be a day of rest for all but the farmers.

The bible does say that the sabbath was no longer required (Rom 7:6)to be kept as Christ fulfilled the Law - only 2 commands were to be kept, Love God and love your neighbour (Matt 22:25-40)

Unfortunately the early church was extremely antisemitic, as many wrongly believed that Jesus was either tried and/or killed by Jews. Many early Christian leaders decided to break all ties with Judaism, including their day of worship.

Jesus never commanded Christians to keep the law, let alone the sabbath. The sermon on the mount is where He took points of that law and showed how they were lacking.

Christians are free to worship whenever and wherever they so desire. This is what worshiping in spirit and in truth is all about.

The seventh day in Genesis is irrelevant. It was that particular day that God rested on and blessed/sanctified, and that day shows having no end. God is still in that rest, and believers enter into God's rest through faith. The sabbath was a shadow of this rest.

The Sabbath is the Lord's day, set apart each week for rest and worship. In Old Testament times, God's covenant people observed the Sabbath on the seventh day of the week because God rested on the seventh day when He had created the earth. After the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, which occurred on the first day of the week, the Lord's disciples began observing the Sabbath on the first day of the week, Sunday.

I guess you'll have to take it up with them.

Christian's worship on the first day of the week in honor of Jesus resurrection on the first day of the week.

The Sabbath is a day of complete rest. You are not to do anything on the sabbath. You can sabbath any day of the week as long as you rest, for the rebuilding of the body.

How can you quote a scripture, thus pretending to know what you're talking about, and NOT know the reason that Christians moved the day of worship to Sunday?

It is because Christians are not Jews. The OT laws were for Jews, then Christians didn't need to follow the OT laws. And, the Sabbath exists ONLY as a day of rest. God wanted people to set aside a day. Doesn't matter what day.

Christians moved the day of worship to Sunday, BECAUSE JESUS ROSE FROM THE DEAD ON A SUNDAY.

But you knew that already ,since you're a Bible scholar, what with your quoting of scripture and all, right?

The Bible tells us why: Revelation 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world.....

Our present day named "Saturday" is the true Biblical Sabbath. What God has made Holy no man has the right to change! Please let no one deceive you on this important topic! Regardless of what the others The practical lesson of the Bible is that even science has shown that man has a biological clock that needs one day of rest in 7. This is an innate part of the Creator's design of humanity. He created us with a need for a relationship with Him and He created and sanctified one day on which we are to set aside all our Earthly pursuits and focus on Him. The importance of this one day is profound. It is no less than the sign that identifies those who are truly learning to obey the Almighty Creator God. It is not the only sign, but it is a very major one. The 4th Commandment is a reflection back to Creation when the very first thing God made holy was the SABBATH. Thus the Sabbath pre-existed the Sinai Covenant! Read Genesis. Read Matthew 5:17-19, what is Christ talking about? Matthew 5:17-19 is in there for our benefit. This is the Messiah, the Savior of the world talking. He did not intend for a single Law of God to be rescinded by His sacrifice for those who broke that Law.

Almost all "Christian" churches agree that the 10 Commandments are valid........except for the 4th. Few realize that the are saying above, Sunday is not the Christian Sabbath. There is absolutely no Biblical justification for Sunday being a day of worship. Sunday was taken from paganism. Sunday worship was introduced by the apostate church (Catholic) of Rome under the rulership of the Roman Emperor Constantine. Constantine was a worshiper of Mithras the Sun God and never repented of it. All who worship on Sunday are sharing in the worship of this false god. Deuteronomy 12:30-31. All this can be easily proven by an internet search of articles with the above names and topics.

The 4th Commandment reads:

Exodus 20:8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days shall you labor, and do all your work: 10 But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God: in it you shall not do any work, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger that is within your gates: 11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: why the LORD blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.”

The Sabbath is clearly defined in this Commandment as having predated the Sinai Covenant and is thus binding on all mankind!

One big thing all those opposed to keeping the original Biblical Sabbath Holy need to keep in mind is 1 John 2:4, go read it. Whether or not you are interested in obeying God boils down to this one verse: “He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.”

Let's be clear about something else, the resurrection was NOT on a Sunday. The crucifixion was NOT on a Friday. This is totally unscriptural. There is a link below to a full article for all who wish to learn the Truth. The idea that the resurrection was on a Sunday is totally false and stems from a lack of knowledge of the Biblical Holy Days, which was suppressed by the Catholic church. Read the Passion story in the Gospels, there were TWO Sabbaths that week. Why?

http://www.tomorrowsworld.org/cgi-bin/tw…

Now, Hebrews 4, read it carefully, it mentions the 7th day, not the first day, as the sanctified day of rest. Please look at your calendar and see which day is which. All other deceptions aside, the fact that the 7th day is mentioned is proof that the weekly Sabbath is what God intended us to understand and keep. The "Old" Testament is full of Gods displeasure over the Israelite's failures to obey His Torah, including the Sabbath. And, please notice something interesting about verse 8 in different translations:

Heb 4:8 For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. (AV)

Heb 4:8 (AKJV) For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.

Heb 4:8 (BBE) For if Joshua had given them rest, he would not have said anything about another day.

Heb 4:8 (YLT) for if Joshua had given them rest, He would not concerning another day have spoken after these things;

Heb 4:8 (Darby) For if Jesus had brought them into rest, he would not have spoken afterwards about another day.

Heb 4:8 (ASV) For if Joshua had given them rest, he would not have spoken afterward of another day.

Why the difference between "Jesus" and Joshua"? It is because the real English transliteration of the name of the Savior is Joshua from His name "Yashua". So, Hebrews is saying, basically, that Yashua (Jesus) did not give the millennial Sabbath rest as some people claim, and as verse 9 states, the Sabbath is still to be kept by the people of God. Please pay particular attention to verse 11 also.

Why is the Law important? Romans 3:20, 7:7, and others What is sin? 1John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. What happens to sinners? Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death.... Because we are under grace, and remember that the above verses define sin and the penalty for it, are we free to do as we wish? Romans 6:15

What is the sign of the True Church, the Elect, at the end of the age?

Revelations 14:12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

Lets keep it simple, forget for a moment that there are approximately 613 Commandments in the Torah and that Yashua says that the least of them has not passed away {Again, read Matthew 5:17-19 and really think about what is being said}, there still remains the 10. Let’s suppose (fallaciously) that all that there are, are the 10. Are Christians required to keep them? Please study the following verses. Will you take the plain word of the Apostles of the Christ and the Christ Himself over the false teachings of your churches?

Rev 22:14, Rev 12:17, 1 John 5:2-3, 1Jo 2:3-4, 1 John 3:4, 1 Corinthians 7:19, John 15:10, Mark 7:7, Matthew 5:19.

Again, the Sabbath was the first thing God created to be Holy. What God has made Holy, no man has the right to change. It was Holy before Sinai, it was made for man when man was made {Mark 2:27, and others)

You really owe it to yourselves to study the following links before rejecting the True Sabbath any longer.

For a study on how Catholic doctrine came to be follow this link:

http://www.biblestudy.org/bibleref/holy-…

The Sinai Covenant restating that Law had no effect on something that existed from creation. God says He made that day Holy, not some other day, and if God has made something holy then you cannot void it by deceptions and smooth lies. There are those who teach "The Sabbath of Creation had no end"....horse pucky......Genesis 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. 3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.....now, where does it say here that the 7th day never ended? It make absolutely no sense based on the definition of "days" given in the preceding account of the creation. Did God somehow suddenly change the way He was counting?

http://www.cbcg.org/true_sabbath.htm

http://www.cbcg.org/franklin/romes_chall…

Not one Sabbatarian is going to claim that there is only one day on which you can worship the Creator God, what we ARE saying is that there is one day, set aside by the Creator at creation, on which HE commands you to set aside for worship. As the scripture says, He hallowed it and made it holy. That being so, folks that reject the Sabbath really have no Biblical basis for their beliefs. The clear thrust of the New Testament scriptures is that the Church of God will be a commandment keeping Church. No ands, ifs, or buts. The clear scriptures are quoted above and lawbreakers have no real answer for them other than rhetorical arguments and word games. Will you believe them or the Bible?

Here is a section of scripture for the Jewish responders and those who say the Law was only for Israelites to consider, showing that the Sabbath and the Covenant was not just for the Israelites alone, please read Romans 11 too, as Paul expounds on this principle.

Isaiah 56:1 Thus saith the LORD, Keep ye judgment, and do justice: for my salvation is near to come, and my righteousness to be revealed. 2 Blessed is the man that doeth this, and the son of man that layeth hold on it; that keepeth the Sabbath from polluting it, and keepeth his hand from doing any evil. 3 Neither let the son of the stranger, that hath joined himself to the LORD, speak, saying, The LORD hath utterly separated me from his people: neither let the eunuch say, Behold, I am a dry tree. 4 For thus saith the LORD unto the eunuchs that keep my Sabbaths, and choose the things that please me, and take hold of my covenant; 5 Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off. 6 Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the LORD, to serve him, and to love the name of the LORD, to be his servants, every one that keepeth the Sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant; 7 Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make th

The word Sabbath means rest. Jesus Christ became our Highest Sabbath when during the High Sabbath of Passover He was crucified. God tells us not to worship a day of the week. Christ being our Sabbath is our rest and we should rest in Christ everyday. The number seven means spiritual completeness. (ps...the calendar has changed since the time of Christ)

You probably don't know Jesus' commandments. He has taught only two commandments which are:

1. Love your God with all your heart, all your spirit and all your strength.

2. Love others as you love yourself.

There isn't any other rule a Christian has to follow. Everything is included in the above two.
