The good Samaritan disproves that, but there are plenty of references in Acts etc that talk about how the early Christian community was tasked with looking after their own as well.

Okay, sometimes teachers are weird and they want you to explore the world in a very different perspective without judging or jumping to conclusions.

So, maybe, let's say Christains should only help Christians when they need to be around those who will lift them up and give them examples to live by. When a person is first saved and needs to grow, maybe he/she needs to practice by helping people he/she knows will not judge if they screw up and will exept the gift they offer openly.

I had a period of time where only Christians surrounded me. If I had someone to help, it was them. I needed that "nursing" until I could clearly see God's eyes and go out on my own.

Hope that helps...it's a little different than all the previous shouting about your teacher being a scumbag :o).

Maybe you could explain to your teacher that Christians are encouraged by Jesus' examples to help even non-Christians. For instance: at John 4:7-9 Jesus is speaking to a Sumerian woman and helped her with her life. At that time it was forbidden for Jews to speak to people of other nations because the Jews were God's chosen people. Yet Jesus reached out and helped this woman.

another example is where Jesus answered the question, "Who really is my neighbor". Jesus gave an illustration of a man that was robbed and beaten along side a road and who was ignored by a Jewish priest and another Jew. But when a Samaritan man saw the robbed man he bandaged him and took him to an inn and paid for all expenses for the robbed man to return to good health again. Clearly, these examples show that Christians should help any people that need it.

I don't know if this is actually the position your teacher holds or if this is part of some sort of debate, but the first verse that pops into mind as support for this thesis is Matthew 10:13-15.

"10:13 And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.

10:14 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.

10:15 Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. "

One could take these verse as telling the Christian to turn their back on those who won't listen to them, which would include helping them.

Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! That is quite a contradicting statement. Christians should help anyone in anyway they can. No christian should be limited to only help anyone of certain religion, stereotype, race etc..I think you should write a paragraph on why christians should help other people instead of just christians. Hope this helped.

Wow -- they're teaching some zany things in schools nowadays.

Just write that Christians shouldn't just help Christians -- we should help everybody.

If someone comes to us needing help, it would be wrong for us to first ask them to show a baptismal certificate.

And, include in your paragraph something about how "Christians should only help Christians" isn't found anywhere in the Gospels. Your teacher may encourage that attitude, but Jesus certainly didn't.

What kind of school do you go to?! If I were you, I would write the paper about why Christians should help people in general, regardless of faith. I say you call your teacher out on this one!

What part of Christianity tells you that you are to only help Christians?

My paragraph would say something like:

"Why Christians Should Only Help Christians,

by Catherine E.

They shouldn't.

The end."

The bible says that we should give preference to our Christian brothers and sisters, but we are saved to do good works and that is in no way exclusive to Christians.. We are to help anyone that the Lord puts before us..

How about the verse that says we should do good to our enemies?? That is exactly the opposite of what you are saying..

I think you will have a very short paragraph..

No.

I'm a Christian, and her request is totally the opposite of the teachings of Jesus in the Bible.

I can't think of a single reason why our help should be limited to other Christians.

Maybe you could canvas the Masonic Lodge though.

in reality as Christians we should show the love of Jesus Christ by helping everyone in need, but if you need the reasons why we should help each other it's quite simple:

The Bible teaches us that we must love one another and tolerate each other for within us (the Church) there must be peace and unity.

The Bible also teaches us that one must straighten his house before he can try to straighten the world. for how could we speak of love if we don't love the brothers at church or are talking bad about them? How could we help others if there are needy people in the church that are not being helped?

as Christians we are the body of Christ and must work together with love. we must care, protect and help each other grow through Christ so that when the bad times come we are prepared and have victory.

as Christians we must demonstrate the love of Christ by helping as many people as we can with kind acts, but we must also have unity and in order to have unity we must first help each other in the church. for how could you preach the word of God if you know there is someone in need in your church and you don't want to help them?

Think about it, seek God and he will guide you

God Bless.

Incredibly disturbing.

I'd write about the benefits of theocratic cleansing and how if Christians only helped other Christians it would cause pain and suffering for non-Christians and they will eventually die out through natural selection. Lets see how they like "survival of the fittest" now!

It already suggests to be unchristian by being choosy on whom you will help. The parable about the good Samaritan advocates about a helping hand from someone who is not a Jew. I don't know if your teacher is a christian by the way he chooses a topic.

No, because it's completely wrong. Go reread the parable of the Good Samaritan a few times and you'll see why. Christ didn't CARE what you CALLED yourself, just what you did for others.

Nope...i cannot help you. Christians should help ALL people. Look at the Parable of the Good Samaritan. The Samaritans were people that were scorned by the Jews. Jesus is telling us that EVERYONE is our neighbor and should be loved.

Sorry, can't help you with that one, from a Biblical standpoint. Maybe you can offer some selfish reasons. Remind him of the story of the good Samaritan.

Politely explain to your teacher that he/she is incorrect - a Christian should strive to help those that aren't Christians, in an effort to demonstrate the impact their faith has had on their life.

IS this question set, to show that you can argue, through literacy. I can't believe your teacher has set this question for any other reason, as it goes against all that Jesus, and his teachings, stood for.

I don't normally cut and paste long passages of the bible but in this case I made an exception. Copy this and give it to your teacher. These are Jesus own words...

Luke chapter 6

27 "But I say to you that hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. 29 To him who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from him who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. 30 Give to every one who begs from you; and of him who takes away your goods do not ask them again. 31 And as you wish that men would do to you, do so to them. 32 "If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. 35 But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish. 36 Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful. 37 "Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; 38 give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For the measure you give will be the measure you get back."
