Question:
Christians - What TV shows do you watch?

I'm genuinely curious. I recorded three basic cable shows on my DVR from tonight, and they all featured sex or other "sins". So I started thinking, do religious people watch these shows? Most Christian users seem so intolerant of the playful jokes on here, how could they possibly be able to watch non-PBS/Disney/Nickelodeon shows?

Haha, this Christian watches all kinds of stuff.

Seinfeld, LOST, The Office, 30 Rock, Criminal Minds. Those are the favorites. Oh, and Cheers.

I suppose I'm not the model Christian when it comes to my TV shows, sorry.

I really don't watch a lot of T.V. anymore, started cutting down when I got busy with grad school. But I do watch family guy, south park, mythbusters, 24, golden girls (yes, i'm 25 and love that show, lol), history channel, and John Stewart somewhat regularly.

Is it intolerant being upset when the jokes get really mean and nasty (or playful, as you call it)? Would you feel the same if those jokes were directed at you? I'm sure you think the "playful" jokes directed towards you are just hilarious, right? It's always funny until someone does it to you.

Many shows that do not show sex or other sins and seem pure and Christian are actually racist because they leave out every race but Caucasians. I watch whatever shows make me happy regardless of how some people may judge them but if you don't feel comfortable watching those shows then don't. Refer to Romans 14.

But realize that in a lot of "Christian" shows there are only Whites and no people of other races so it is hard for non Whites and those who sympathize with them to identify with those shows. And even cartoons can be racist and sexist.

I watch tons of tv:

Tavis Smiley

hgtv - mostly the real estate programs (not so much the design programs)

golden girls

sex and the city

everybody hates chris

cosby show

a different world

girlfriends

new york undercover

law and order

documentaries

king of the hill

simpsons

family guy

real housewives (all but new jersey)

I will stop there because I watch a ton of tv, anything that interests me or makes me laugh.

I watch TBN and Daystar TV. In particular I like Andrew Wommack's show Gospel Truth and Dr. Charles Stanley's show. I like House and Stargate Universe and Discovery Channel and PBS. I haven't watched Disney since I was middle-aged and realized that most of their really nasty villains were middle-aged women. If I'm going to spend an hour of my life in exchange for a TV show, I want it to be something that will make me think. I especially like the Nova Series. I also watch some TV shows on www.hulu.com. Jessie Duplantis is one of my favorite pastors.

Personally I think we could all do with a little less television and movies. Learn to find pleasure in the simpler things in life like our ancestors did. Appreciate nature to the fullest extent. I agree that the more we are distracted by electronic media the further were away from realizing what a beautiful world God gave us. To enjoy it to the fullest extent. To any practicing Christians out there worried about themselves or their children watching to many violent/stupid/obscene television shows, my advice would be to watch together. Find family friendly programming made for all ages. Game shows are the best. Not only are they fun, but educational. =)

Saving Grace

Intervention (re-run this week)

Burn notice

Criminal Minds

Law and Order

CSI (LV and Miami)

The first 48

Mad Money

Sons of Anarchy

I plan on watching 'Justified' which premiers tomorrow night

Project Runway

Charmed re-runs

Desperate Housewives

COPS

America Most Wanted

Golden Girls Re-runs (I just Love those)

HBO

True blood

Entourage

Big Love

Just about anything on the food network (aka the cooking channel in my house)

Sell This House

Just an FYI PBS has hard left/liberal and often anti-religious agenda. Christians in the know avoid it. Disney and and 'Nick' shows are banned in my house. Their shows seem to have the goal of making our children little sexual idiots with no self esteem.

The Community

Invader Zim

And, uh, that's about it. Some of the Amazing Race. But, I don't watch tons of TV.

I'm a Christian, and really, I try not to watch things with a lot of sex or cussing, but sometimes the shows I like have a little of it. I like Lost, House, Lie to Me, Survivor, Amazing Race and that stuff.

I'm agree, I love Criminal Minds and Seinfeld. Just because we are Christians does not mean we have to watch PBS, it just means we need to watch shows that are not completely wrong. I will not watch shows that are against God. It says in the bible what your eyes see your soul feels, so watching evil shows may put worse thoughts in your mind then by watching Touched by an angel. This is only my opinion.

CSI and CSI New York, Star Trek re-runs, 1,000 ways to die (and other Spike TV shows), various re-runs of sitcoms (e.g., George Lopez, Roseanne)...and lots of HGTV. I do have a nine year old so Disney/Nick/PBS/Animal Planet shows also play a prominent role... ....and if you think Disney and Nick shows don't feature "sex" in some way, you're wrong.

I'd also say you're incorrect about "most Christian" users being intolerant of playful jokes (by implication, sexual jokes and references)...it's a perception thing I think...if someone objects to something, they have a reason (motive) to voice that objection...someone who doesn't object OR who doesn't believe it is his or her "place" to object doesn't have a reason to respond!

I do know many Christians who limit TV to sports and education and nature and news shows...usually because of children but not always...I even know a few who don't have a TV. Of course, I also know many non-Christians with the same behavior and choices related to TV...extremely limited...an agnostic friend of mine only watches the news...a Jewish friend only watches "educational" shows with her children (she doesn't allow them to watch the news yet).

Almost anything on Nickelodeon, Boomerang, Fox News, Disney Channel, Cartoon Network (excluding adult swim, Pokemon, and a couple others) and occasionally something on History or Military Channel

I take pride in being ignorant about actors' and actresses' names. I plead guilty to not watching so-called, "must see TV." I take pride in the fact that I prefer nature programs, educational history and science, and serious news programs.

24 and Lost are my 2 favorites right now.

Most Christian users arent intolerant of playful jokes. It is just that most of the socalled playful jokes are nothing of the sort. They are thinly veiled insults disguised as jokes just so the person can say, lighten up it was just a joke, when they know for a fact it was meant as an insult.

When a person really believes the joke and they really do have issues with the person, it is not a joke anymore.

Motive matters when making a socalled joke.

Why should you base what shows you watch on what religion you're from. People need to loosen up. It's not a sin watching a tv show that has inappropriate things. As it is, we are all sinners no matter what religion we come from.

There are plenty of many reviews out there that do not have movies. Books can explore ideas and principles and never have to be concerned in regards to a special effects budget.
