I highly suggest you read "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins. It will answer many of your questions.

And you are right, about 7% of "scientists" proclaim some type of religious belief. They are not all atheists. Within any group, people are seldom all anything.

By the by, there is no scientific evidence of the existence of any type of deity. I'm not sure what you mean by "logics that science just cannot explain", but the existence of a deity is in and of itself unfalsifiable.

Atheists exist, because religion exist. If there was no concept of any gods, there would be nothing to not believe in and the term "atheist" would be without meaning, because it would be the social norm. As for why, here are my personal reasons:

I see no evidence that proves or disproves a single god of any religion, but that does not mean I'm going to default to belief

I guess the reason I don't see why any one religion is true is because of the fact that there have been 1000s of religions over the years and all of them have been thought to be the absolute truth when they were most popular.

I don't think any scientific theories about the origin of the universe are any more provable than what any religion says about the creation of the universe. It's all about perspective.

Say a Christian is walking along a beach. He sees rocks from the ocean floor on top of a cliff. To him it's evidence of the great flood that the bible tells of. An atheist may see the same rock and see it as evidence that the ocean used to reach the top of the cliff, but eventualy receded over millions of years. The same evidence that proves one side of the argument, can also prove the other side, it just depends on how you look at it.

Because there are so many possibilities and I haven't a single piece of evidence that supports any ONE of them over the other, scientific or otherwise, I highly doubt that any of them could be "THE" "ONLY" "RIGHT" "ONE". Of course I know that I could always be wrong, but the possibility of me being wrong isn't going to scare me into believing something that I honestly can't see being true. And what if there is some kind of god or supreme being, but no religion has ever written about it, or thought of its possibility? That means all religions could be wrong, including yours. Is that going to stop you from believeing? No, same goes for me.

I know some people might argue that ALL religions are right and it's just a matter of what you have faith in, but if that's true, why can't atheism be right, too? If there does happen to be a god and you only have to believe in it to go to heaven when you die or get reincarnated, or whatever you believe, why can't I just not believe and not have that happen to me? What if I don't want to stare at Earth from the sky for eternity, or get reborn again into a hostile enviornment like this? Oh well, my loss, why should you care?

For those reasons, it just seems highly unlikely that what any ONE religion says about a god(s) could be right, and if all are right then it shouldn't matter that I don't pick one. Of course I'm not 100% sure, nor do I think I'll ever be. But just because I can't know for sure, doesn't mean I'm gonna be afraid of being wrong and try to pretend to believe in something, just because of a possible wrong answer.

Most atheists exist because there's no convincing evidence to show the existence of any gods.

Needing evidence to believe is pretty much the opposite of having faith. Faith-based belief has notably included the 'flat earth' and geocentric universe, so has not a great track record.

BTW approximately 93% of the US National Academy of Sciences are non-believers.

"So why do Atheist exist? is it a choice?"

Actually it's a conclusion one reaches after realising just that by the SIMPLE act of looking around anyone can see that shït happens to all and sundry regardless of ANY thought, deed or circumstance, exactly as if there was NO invisible space chappie pulling any strings at all..

I find it impossible to believe that there are real adults who believe that there are invisible space chappies playing with our heads.

I can understand children having imaginary friends ... but adults?

Wow.

Y'all blows my mind.

Betcha there are some folks getting rich from you.

"God, on the other hand, has proof that He existed"

IF that was true, I'd be a believer.

That is a LIE.

Of course there are things science has not explained.

So what.

Aren't you happy with "I don't know".

There are SO many things you don't know.

Yes, I know GODDIDIT is such a simple thing to parrot.

It's why it's so prevalent among the least educated.

Because certain religions push people over the edge in the wrong direction by being so unrealistic ( not pointing fingers but those religions know who they are. )

I think it is very sad when it happens. No offense to atheists but i mean when you don't believe in any theology or any kind of god or what ever you want to call it. I mean what do you have to believe in.

It's a choice and there are actually a surprising few people that are atheists.

I guess the reason we see them so often is because they are so vocal. But you learn to ignore them and we get on with our lives. :)

The last time people "got inquisitive" about atheists, we had all sort of problems. Something about red hot pokers and people being broken on the wheel and such. Kindly choose a different word to describe your ruminations.

Now, to your question...it's all a part of God's plan. There. Feel better? I knew you would. Now hurry off to Bible study or youth group or whatever it is that your parents have coerced you to believe will help you stay true to your soul's purpose as one of God's chosen.

It is choice or maybe because they haven't heard of Gods story

Also it is hard for those of us who are teens, adults and elderly to believe in Him if they are just newbie. Unlike teens, adults and elderly, children are easily adapted to having faith in God because they've grown through Him. Teens are getting to the stage were they think they can do anything and they don't need God because of all the bad things that happens in their lives. Adults and elderly are old and have seen the world more than the young ones have and they've experience life without any God. Teens, adults and elderly think bad comes and go and good comes and go, when really it is all of gods work they don't take enough time to notice is there:)

Yes, it is a choice. Maybe 'not all' scientists and mathematicians aren't atheists, but the great majority of them (95+%) are. Even most of the ones that aren't atheists do accept scientific theories about the creation of the universe. (And then there's Mike Behe, who seems to exist just to prove that there's no unanimity on the subject...)

The same reason why every other belief system exists, because somebody tried thinking without the use of scientific evidence.

Edit: I re-read it and I sounded like a creationist hence to clarify, I'm saying that any belief system of any kind, whether they think they're rational or not, is not based on science.

PersonalManswer, you might find this a bit unbelievable, but there was a time when you were an atheist.

Everyone is born an atheist, i.e., someone without knowledge or belief in God. It was only later in your life that you became indoctrinated into the religion of your parents.

its a realization not a choice. one day you realize, wait none of this makes sense. and then you pick it apart in your brain and realize that the only reason that people go along with religion is because it gives them the answers they want to hear.

what happens after heaven? paradise.

why are we here? to worship god.

who put us here? god did.
2009-04-20 21:19:08 UTC
Of course it's a choice. We exist because we see logic and fact, rather than believe the words in a book, and live off them.

Tell me why you don't believe in leprecauns, and you have your answer.

Edit: YEAH, they're considered mythology, but so is a god. There is just as much 'proof' of leprechauns as there is of a god.
2009-04-20 22:39:57 UTC
Of course atheists exist - the word was defined by the christian church for goodness sake!!

It comes about through education and the rising intellect allowing them to realize clearly that there is no such thing as any god!! That is it - end of story!!
2009-04-20 21:23:03 UTC
It's a choice like how you chose to believe in a your god.

And by the way, over 90 percent of scientists don't subscribe to a religion. So yeah...
2009-04-21 05:57:10 UTC
Doesnt this actually contradict one of your previous questions? Why ask, why do atheists exist? Why not? Just like there is a God, there is a devil, there are believers and non-believers. To ask them why they dont believe and tell them there is proof, you are trying to make them see that there is a God but they dont want proof, they want scientific reasoning. Its just who they are...
2009-04-20 21:18:59 UTC
Please watch this youtube video, it pretty much sums up my answer perfectly: (its not a rick roll or anything, its only a minute long, and it makes a lot of sense)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0A4_bwCaX0

As for "is it a choice?" No, its not. I didnt want to be an atheist, I just dont believe in God. I can't make myself believe in God just as much as you can't make yourself believe in Santa. Its something that doesnt make sense to me at all.

edit: just because science can't explain something yet, doesnt mean that therefore God must exist. It just means that we dont have all of the answers yet.

I choose to believe there are no supernatural forces or beings, just as I have chosen to believe 2+2 =4.

After objectively reviewing a great deal of evidence, it is impossible for me to believe in any god.

Basically, atheists exist because there is no good reason to believe in any gods.

find me solid evidence of god, because there is a lot against him, and that is just in the astrology dept. over here us astrologists have disproved jesus as nothing more than a sun god. heaven is literally another name for space.

Atheism wasn't a choice, it was more of a gradual realization. Why do atheists exist? I suppose it because of their parents.

think of a god from another religion and think of why you do not believe in it then apply that reason to every god, including your own.
