The only thing the Mayan calender predicts is the end of a cycle know as precession, which is basically as 26,000 year wobble of the Earth's axis. It is not only non-technical, but also non-knowledgeable. The precession of the Earth is independent of our method of time-keeping. What is happening is that the direction in which the Earth's axis of rotation is pointing is moving. The duration of one precession cycle is about 26.000 years, so in about 13.000 years the Earth's axis of rotation will point in a direction 46 degrees away from its current direction. (The tilt of the Earth's axis with respect to the plane of the Earth's orbit around the sun is about 23 degrees, the Earth's precession is (roughly) a motion with respect to the plane of orbit around the sun).

There are no biblical references to 2012.

''But the hour and the day no man knoweth, neither the angels in heaven, nor shall they know until he comes" .

Matthew 24: 36

Nostradamus predicted the world to end in 3700.

(Unless you haven't read the real Nostradamus and have been reading fake Internet claims).

So nothing to worry about.

I read that the world was going to end in 2013 in wikipedia 'cos of the whole triple six thing, but who knows.

I watched the youtube video and people have been predicting the end of the world for over thousands of years and they've proved to be wrong (we'd be dead if they were right, unless we already are...). Nostradamous' predictions suggests that the world will end with a World war III, and with nuclear weapons and unrest around the world, he might just be right. Who knows?

I don't actually see the point in predicting when the earth will end, we all have to die someday and it doesn't matter when it is. It's much easier to live life and not to think about the future of the world, yes we must recycle, help endangered species, reduce our use of cars and stop cutting down trees to preserve what we have for the future generation but that's as far as we are concered in the furture of the world. If the world has to end, it has to end and that's that. I suppose all good things must to an end don't they?

I reckon the prediction thing is silly, there's no point predicting the world's end, might and well enjoy the life that we have 'cos with the amount of predictions made, any day might be your last.

No. No. No! No end of the world in 2012. But we're getting closer.

What will happen on December 21, 2012, is that the earth's poles will have completely reversed. North will be south and south north. This has happened before in history. What has some scientists in a tizzy is that at precisely the same time, the poles on the sun sill have also completely reversed. Some say nothing will happen. Other say catastrophic events will result. If what these other scientists say comes to pass, they will mirror the events foretold in Revelation 6.

What's really interesting is that the precise timing is 11:11 GMT. Occultists who are into numerology see the number 11 having significant power. Multiples of this number simply multiply the power. Occultists see the number 11 as evidence that their plans, whatever they are, are to be carried out. Look up the significance of "11" in the attacks of 9/11.

Bottom line. The world will not end on 12/21/2012. But it may very well be the beginning of the end.

Yes, I have heard about the theory of the world ending on the 21st Dec 2012.

I don't believe it either. In fact I don't believe in end's of anything. End's are just beginnings disguised as transformation.

As for the secret societies, I don't think they are connected to the Mayan calander but the end of the calander may have been used to their advantage. My guess is there are members of these societies in positions of power that weild interest groups to sway markets to gain on the stock exchange by creating havoc and then offering a solution to combat the problems with hidden gains.

It is true the Mayans predicted many things with their cog like calander system but I have heard that 'end of the world' was mistranslated and it is actually 'end of the world as we know it'. So that must mean we are still around to percieve the world to know it in the future.. if you believe in that sort of thing. Ian Lungold has interesting views on how the Mayans viewed Time to construct their calander. He has some lectures on youtube somewhere.

It's rubbish. They cannot predict something accurately which is beyond their control, God decides that and believe me no one knows when God wants to end the world, and that is if He wants to. I suggest these people just sit down and watch the London Olympics in 2012!

It is so unrealistic, they have even given a specific date. I know that Mayans have predicted this but in this case I am sure that this prediction will be proved wrong. No matter how clever or intelligent a human being is, to predict anything like this is complete stupidity and they won't know. I mean even Einstein won't be able to predict accurately when the world is going to end. We are only human beings, not God.

The MAYANS and the INCAS both had a calender that ended in the years 2011 to 2013 .From this some have decided this meant the end of everything .I think they just said "that's far enough ahead we can add more if needed"Actually if their calender had any forecasting ability then their calender should have ended somewhere between 1492 and 1500 as that was the end of their world.

Here is the definite end of us god and the earth and our solar system. .In 50 million years our sun will super nova but we will probably done ourselves in long before that.

The Mayans predicted it about the same as our current calendar predicts an end of the world after december 31, 9999.

Eight thousand years from now, people will panic because our "ancient" civilization predicted the end of the world!

I've heard this many times even before yahoo answers came along. It is true that they Mayan calender ends on 12/21/2012 but that does not mean that the world is going to end.

Edit:

to poster joe w and you are basing your answer on what?

Yeah, the whole thing is supposed to be based on the fact that the Mayan calendar ends then. I'm at a loss to understand exactly WHEN we started taking the Mayans' approach to things as any kind of serious reckoner for some kind of apocalyptic doom, but there it is...

Nirbiru, AKA the horned ibis.

90% of life wiped out, and some how not taking billions of years to regain its self every 3000 years-NASA hasn't said anything but luckily we'll always have a few bored college students.

I've read into it before, it seems to be bull. The 'prophecy' engraved on egyptian temples is the crown of ra the sun god.

The end of the world will not be ending in 2012 -- but let's hope that there will be a worldwide change of thought -- that all of us will finally cooperate and Peace will reign!!! -- I'm getting rather tired for this big event to take place!! ..... ;-) ;-)

the world as we know it will end soon, but not on this date.

Have a look at Matthew chapter 24 for signs of the end of the world

The world will not end.

The humans are the ones that will end.

It will happen when it happens.

Live for today.

Tomorrow isn't here yet.

Yesterday is gone, but still with you inside.

Love and live for today.

Take care!
