please take into consideration what I said earlier: (read everything so you don't look ignorant)

Religions have beliefs all members follow. Religions members have a common belief system.

Atheists have no beliefs. Atheists only agree on one thing, there is no deity. Atheists do not have any sort of belief system, being in order for something to be a system of belief it would have to have at least two beliefs. If you count the lack of a belief in a deity as a belief it is still only one belief. They only sense you can call atheism a religion at all is in the sense everyone is labeled as a member of a religion. Once again lack of a belief is not a belief, just like bald is not a hair style.

I'm an atheist and do not think of atheism as a religion, and I find it interesting that those are now referring to it as a religion are largely Christian, and it seems equally clear to me that they are doing so for the sole purpose of annoying those of us who like to keep our atheism separated from that thoroughly objectionable term. I realize that this is a generalization, but it seems to be the case in many questions posted here.

So, Christians are sort of labeling us as religious, knowing that we will most likely find this distasteful and unpleasant. Sort of like an atheist accusing a Christian of not being a "true" Christian.

This is just an observation, and I would like to let the Christians who engage in this silly practice know that we are not deceived. And we wish they would grow up already, or at least grow out of diapers.

I like when Christians claim atheism is a religion. It's as if they're trying to say, "You atheists are so smug and think you're so rational, but really your beliefs are just as irrational as ours...er...that's not quite what I meant to say. It's just that atheism has just as little foundation in reality as Christia- no wait, that's coming out wrong..."

Atheism actually can be a tenet of some religions, and it can be accepted by other religions among it's practioners. Unitarians accept atheists, and some atheists do want to join UUA congregations for the fellowship and community to be found there. Some schools of Buddhism can be atheistic. Pantheism is considered largely atheistic. Being an atheist doesn't make one appostate from the Jewish community. There are even some groups that get together and call themselves things like "The Church of Atheism". LeVeyan Satanists claim to be atheistic, choosing Satan simply as an anti-theistic symbol. However, atheism on its own cannot be a religion any more than theism can. If atheism is A religion then theism is A religion, and Christians, Muslims and Hindus must all belong to the same religion.

When it comes to defining what religion is, I will trust the Oxford dictionary the most.

religion

• noun 1 the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods. 2 a particular system of faith and worship. 3 a pursuit or interest followed with devotion.

— ORIGIN originally in the sense life under monastic vows: from Latin religio ‘obligation, reverence’.

Under this definition Atheism is not a religion. If you look at how the word religion came about, it also confirms that Atheism is not a religion.

Let me summarize my stance.

1. I don't see in any logical way how it should ever be a religion.

2. However, I see so many Atheists pushing their beliefs on others, ridiculing those who disagree, recently passing out informational pamphlets about Atheism, and even starting their own churches. Once again, I'll post what the church of Atheism says. Remember, THEY think that Atheism is a religion.

The church of Atheism says this about atheism being a religion:

Atheism as a Religion

Atheism is a result of eager ardent interest in persuing Theological Truth. Atheists are enthusiastically devoted to Theological Truths and by devoting ourselves to this principle we, Nontheists, Apatheists, Ignostics, Agnostics, Freethinkers, Spiritualists, Skeptics, Materialists, Humanists, Metaphysical Naturalists, Deists, Pantheists, or otherwise traditionally Nonreligious or Irreligious that compose the related and or sub-sects of Atheism, currently find that god(s) has not been properly defined and cannot exist in their traditionally defined concepts

Many Atheists think that they are part of a religion. Argue with them.

P.S. I used to live near Madison, WI and the Atheists there were preaching their beliefs, advertising them on buses, and even handing out pamphlets for the Church of Atheism. Like I said, don't argue with me about it. Argue with them.

Whether they have observed the hypocrisy of religion or not, many atheists simply cannot reconcile belief in God with the suffering in the world. Simone de Beauvoir once said: “It was easier for me to think of a world without a creator than of a creator loaded with all the contradictions of the world.”

Do the world’s injustices—including those instigated by hypocritical religionists—prove that there is no God? Consider: If a knife is used to threaten, injure, or even murder an innocent person, does this prove that the knife had no designer? Does it not rather show that the object was put to a wrong use? Likewise, much of human grief gives evidence that humans are misusing their God-given abilities as well as the earth itself.

Some, however, feel that it is illogical to believe in God, since we cannot see him. But what about air, sound waves, and odors? We cannot see any of these things, yet we know they exist. Our lungs, ears, and noses tell us so. Surely, we believe in what cannot be seen if we have evidence.

(Compare Psalm 104:24.

How many your works are, O Jehovah!

All of them in wisdom you have made.

The earth is full of your productions

"Religions members have a common belief system." i'd have to respectfully disagree with that statement. The 20,000+ Christian denominations don't have any beliefs in common. (granted there is the existence of Jesus, but some people from other religions also acknowledge his existence so that doesn't really count.)

I think Atheisim is becoming a religion because they are now meeting regularly and they also set out to convert people with billboards and bus signs promoting their ideology. In a few more years they'll make Darwin's Birthday a national holiday or something.

The dictionary is so wonderful sometimes:

Religion

1. a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.

2. a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects: the Christian religion; the Buddhist religion.

3. the body of persons adhering to a particular set of beliefs and practices: a world council of religions.

the definition of God is a supreme authority. to the atheist, they, or mankind as a whole, are the supreme authority. in other words, they worship their own or mankind's intellect. it should be obvious how stupid and foolish this is. man's knowledge is limited, it always has been and always will be. some think man is evolving slowly toward perfection. there is no evidence of this whatsoever. man's corrupt nature doesn't improve. no matter how much he learns, he applies his knowledge to evil purposes. atheists live in a state of blindness and denial.

think for a 2nd atheism is a faith (it is, set aside for a 2nd how ridiculous it somewhat is. Atheism refers to no longer believing in god; it dose no longer recommend something approximately no rely if somebody is religious or no longer). Now, if atheism is a faith, it somewhat is conceivable that the atheist does no longer nicely known or have faith this. to that end, an atheist might nevertheless preserve hostility in the direction of faith, on an identical time as on the comparable time being religious. evaluate that theists already think of atheists are blinded and deluded fools denying the plain fact of God's existence. Is it somewhat lots of a stretch for them to maintain that the atheist is themselves caught in a internet of contradictory and perplexed ideals, fairly than they, the theist, being accountable of the contradiction? I submit that it is not, and that, from a theist's perspective, it makes ideal experience for an atheist to be adhering to a faith, no longer be responsive to it or refuse to nicely known it, and on the comparable time be antagonistic to faith. moreover, it somewhat is even conceivable that atheists are antagonistic in the direction of their very own faith. evaluate that theists additionally think of atheists are bitter and unhappy - for sure, then, they might experience hostility in the direction of their very own ideals. Given those reasons - that an atheist could be antagonistic against themselves, and to that end being antagonistic in the direction of faith and being religious your self isn't impossible, and that it somewhat is conceivable atheists are perplexed or deluded, are religious, do no longer are responsive to it, and proceed to oppose faith, the two statements approximately atheism are reconcilable in the ideas of the theist.

I am mostly athe but until science can demonstrate self replicating molecules or whatever that first step is that began life we can't be 100% sure of anything, it's that simple? Until then we can only surmise, and surmising = faith to a degree?

Technically, it's a belief because there's no solid evidence backing it up; it's based on faith.
