Your question: "When atheists complain saying that the Bible was written by men, do they ever ever examine their own bookshelf? What say ye?"

Why do you ask?

Since atheists have nothing necessarily in common with other atheists except that they do not have a god schema, no generalized yet rational answer covering all atheists or even a significant number of atheists can be possible. So you really need to add some context from which your claim was constructed.

There is no connection between atheism and the question you have asked.

I have never complained that the Bible was written by humans, not some god. Yet I am an atheist.

I examine my books from time to time when deciding what to read next.

The claim that the Bible had human authors is a well founded claim, not a complaint. It is just a known fact of history. Because you have not supplied enough context regarding under what circumstances at least two atheists have complained as you have said, no specific answer is available.

Atheism is rejection of claims that there exists at least one god in the real world. Such claims are usually rejected due to lack of evidence or to failed attempts at argumentation. No one atheist has encountered all such claims due to there being just too many theist claims already and more on the way.

Theology is probably the only academic subject for which there is no evidence of that which is allegedly being studied.

Nevertheless, culturally acquired faith in imaginary gods continues unabated.

See answer to online question, "Why do we need religion? Behavioral neuroscience and social psychology seem sufficient?" for an explanation of why that is so:

Using the word "complain' makes a rational answer to your posting impossible. Anyone with a bookshelf examines it every time they retrieve or replace a tome. Religious beliefs of some suggest that God directed the writing of the bible. Read about Moses and Joseph Smith. You are attributing information about atheists that is not factual.

Well, I'm not an atheist (Christian-deist actually), but my bookshelf contains the holy books of 5 religions, numerous atheists and a number of comparative books. All written by men and women.

I wonder how much diversity of thought your bookshelf represents.
?
2015-07-16 07:29:28 UTC
Sure.

On the fiction shelf I've got the Bible, a bunch of Terry Pratchett, Pride & Prejudice & Zombies...

On the academics shelf I've got my biology textbooks, a programming textbook, the Feynman lectures in Physics...

They're all written by humans. The difference is that some are fantasy stories about magic and monsters, whereas some are useful for understanding and improving the real world.

Most of us have an opinion regarding the origin of the holy books that are used by nearly every person who participates in some form of higher power worship or belief system.

In the infinite wisdom of what or who or how caused people came into being on this planet, (and possibly others as well) It is quite remarkable, but also sad because it seems that none of the HOLY 'RELIGIONS have been able to stop the killing and murder of others and yet all proclaim there should be no killing. Well, regardless the right or wrong or questionable, seems to me that murder regardless the "supposed rationale" indicates that religion seems to be the cause of a lot of murders of people

so maybe the holy books have been written by humans..unfortunately Thou shalt not kill seems to have become the main theme of all the holy books..What a waste.

Yes! to look for more stupid answers to counter biblical teaching. Most people take the interpretation of the bible at face value when in fact much of it is flawed do to the translation from it original text into other languages so it takes a lot of study and research which an atheist won't do. Just like they don't research the authors and information in the books that teach against there being a GOD..........Just remember this quote from the word of GOD " A fool is righteous in their own eyes"

I don't keep either of my two bibles on a book shelf. I keep them where I can reach them because I need them for school and summer homework. After I graduate I will put my bibles right next to the book on Greek and Norse mythology. I examine and sometimes reorganize my bookshelf everytime I finish a new book and need to find a spot for it.

I don't complain.

If it ever comes up I tell the truth.

Bibel fantasies were made-up by mostly men...

A couple of women may have been involved.

Every single book in my bookshelf was written by a human.

My books, doesn't tell you how to live; it doesn't say being gay is wrong, you mustn't eat pork or that you shouldn't wear mixed fibres. If you're talking about science - the big bang, evolution (you can be a theists and believe both!) that's backed up by evidence and if someone thinks they've spotted something that refutes the current thinking, a new book is written. That's how scientist get famous by disagreeing with the current line of thought.

Bible, Tanakh, Quran, Greek and Norse and Slavic and Egyptian mythology.

All written by men, of course. What's your point?

I never complain about that, just state it as a fact to be considered when thinking about stories such as Adam and Eve. My bookshelf is full of women writers, Anne Tyler and Jane Austen are my favorites. I hope you aren't assuming or only speaking to male atheists because that is just scummy.

EVERY book is written by men... the uniqueness of the Bible is the evidence itself presents about its authorship. The Bible presents a collection of 66 books scribed by 40 different men. Written down over a period of 1,500 years, +or-, the text stays true to several themes throughout. Given the extended time period of the writing, and the consistent themes, we are led to consider what the Apostle Paul has written: "All scripture is given by inspiration..." , literally, the text is God-breathed. The Apostle Peter writes similarly, "...holy men of old spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.",, as he spoke of the Prophets.

Sure, all 15 versions of the Bible, I may have missed a few but I consider them to be fairly representative. It cuts no ice. The bible WAS "written by men". As for"examining my own bookshelf" I've been an atheist since I was eight years old. I am now 72 and NOTHING will change my stance. I suspect that many of those who fervently study Christianity will join me - when they grow up!

I'm not real sure what point you're trying to make. I understand that my book collection is written by humans. Some of it is fiction, some of it is non fiction. The non fiction I have deals with history, crime, science and autobiographies. There are no extraordinary claims.

You're forgetting that I'm not taking my copy of Interview With The Vampire or The Hitchhiker's Guide to theGalaxy or Clan of the Cave Bear with me door to door and asking people if they've heard of the truth of Anne Rice, Douglas Adams or Jean Auel. I'm not threatening people with eternal torture from Lestat, the Vogons, or Ayla.

How is it that you know with absolute certainty that God doesn't work in the minds of the writers of atheistic literature to place His message there in a way for them to receive it? Why do you put limits on God and place judgments on those who believe differently from you? God is in all of us - even if we fail to recognize it - but this is an issue that is between God and the individual and really no body else's business.

Eh, the difference is that WE ATHEISTS don't claim those books on OUR bookshelves are INFAILABLE, as YOU do with YOURS. That's a hell of a big difference, pal. WE know our books contain mistakes (which, eventually, will be discovered and corrected), whereas YOU think your error-riddled book written by bronze-age savages is PERFECT and therefore can't ever learn from your mistakes or grow in knowledge and wisdom. YOU are stuck with the ignorance and prejudices of a tribe of desert nomads that lived three thousand years ago, people who thought the Earth was flat and that the Sun orbited it!

All books are written by man, no God has ever written a book so to call any book the word of god is just plain moronic.

Christians remind Me of Our Cat. When She was a kitten We taught her to use the door to the deck to get in and out of the house. That was about 15 years ago. Over the years We have remodeled and put in another door to the deck but she continues to go to the same door no matter how often We show her the other door. In many ways christians are the same. You can show Them the new door but They can't get it in Their head to use it.

the point is .. Atheists, you have your "bibles" that you believe in on your bookshelves written by men (such as "the god delusion, and god is not great, and the portable atheist ) yet you say you cannot believe in the bible because it is written by men!
