I know it's a probably a daft question, and I'm probably showing my ignorance, but Christians/Christianity, Jews/Judaism, Buddhists/Buddhism, Hindu/Hinduism etc. So why Muslim/Islam?

Because in the Arabic language, the word "Islam" means peaceful submission to God, and the coherent to this act are called "muslims" as in the English language the word "work" is derived from it "workers" which means those who work.

There's nothing wrong with your question and I dont think you're being rude at all. But it is not a terms in our langguage. So maybe you should ask white people why they created it. Im a malaysian muslim. We called Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddha all as Orang Christian(Christian people) or Orang Islam(Islam people) or if to called a religion we called agama kristian or agama islam(Christian or islam religion), We dont use things like christianity or muslim and others. So in the end it is just a matter of langguage.

skill those submitted to God. Islam is the religion no longer purely taught via Prophet Muhammad, yet it the way of existence observed via Adam onwards and all next prophets including Musses, Jesus etc purely preached the comparable Islam which became finally achieved via Prophet Muhammad. So all previous people who observed before prophets until coming of prophet Muhammad have been additionally Muslims..

In Semetic languages, the "M" prefix is used to denote reflexive.

So - Islam - submission to God

Muslim - one who submits to God

For some odd reason, in the case of Islam, the actual Arabic usage is respected in the modern English form but not the native usage in the case of Jews or Budhists or Hindus

Interestingly, some have introduced the form "Islamism" and "Islamist" to refer to political "fundamentalist" Islam as a way of distinguishing it from traditional Islam.

Muslim is derived from the Arabic root word salam which means peace, meaning one who has submitted to God. Islam is derived from the same root word peace. Peace is from God and God is peace.

"This day those who disbelieve have despaired of [defeating] your religion; so fear them not, but fear Me.

This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion". (Quran 5:3)

it has to do with the root consonants slm. I believe it means peace or something. So depending on usage, it can be muSLiM or iSLaM or ShaLoM, jeruSaLeM, etc.

that's how the middle eastern languages work....keeping the consonants the same while changing the rest depending on meaning.

Muslim is actually a modern variant of several other names that have been used in the past.

It used to be Moslem, which was a reference to their reverence (really, worship) of Mohammad.

Before that it was Mohammedan, which was even more a reference to their following of Mohammad.

Remember, "Christian" was actually originally a name given to the followers of Jesus as a form of derogatory statement (Acts 11:26). But, Christianity accepted it as a fitting title, since we do follow Christ.

Muslims hated being called Mohammedans or Moslems, since they insist they do not worship or follow Mohammad.
