2009-07-18 13:11:37 UTC
This is just about the atheist live where I live, only them. I don't mean to offend

But where I live, there a group of atheist who meet every week to discuss about being atheist, it's atheist club.

There isn't anything even remotely ironic about it. Many people of like minds form clubs to discuss their opinions.

I can see where it would appear ironic. On the surface, it is kind of like getting together and discussing the non-existence of faeries.

On a different level, there is no irony. Religious people have a certain viewpoint based on a number of assumptions. Sometimes, owing to the certainty with which they hold these convictions, they attempt to push their personal beliefs onto others and into the political arena.

Atheists are very concerned about the social and political implications of religion. Some feel that measures must be taken to keep any given

religious morality out of the courts and legislature. To this extent, these discussions can be quite relevant; they might help raise people's awareness and help to change laws.

Atheists are very concerned, for example, when pseudo-religious ideas are presented as fact, and as such should be given equal time to science, or in more extreme cases, should replace science completely.

So, it is only on the surface that such an event seems ironic

So, what you are saying is that these "atheists" meet, discuss life, the universe & everything, socialize with like-minded folk in the community, and presumably organize events occasionally, all without requiring the other attendees to believe in some "Imaginary Sky Daddy"?

I think that is the OPPOSITE of irony, actually, since none of them are trying to convince all the others they actually believe in something completely nonsensical.

I agree it just seems pointless to me. What would you talk about at atheist club, would the whole club be about how you dont beleive in god, dont you already know you dont believe in god. I dont get that atheist club it just doesnt make sence. You would waste your time to talk to someone about how you dont beleive in god. What else would you talk about. The only good thing is ill go up to this group every day and say god bless you guys. I get to spread the word over to a whole group instead of just one person.

I wouldn't call it "ironic" . . . atheism isn't a movement against organized religion, though most of us probably are against it.

It's just a lack of belief. People with like minds get together to discuss things with people who believe like they do.

It is strange, to me. But atheism doesn't have the benefit of the "part of a community" feeling that religion offers. And I think that's one of religions big benefits. People like to feel like part of a group, not isolated. And atheists - depending on the area - probably feel quite isolated. (I'm from a rural area, so I definitely do.)

So . . . I wouldn't find it ironic. Though, I do hate the promotion of atheism (billboards and such). I don't think it's totally necessary.

Maybe they feel alone and isolated, atheists in some countries are persecuted, and many may never meet a like minded person.

I seriously doubt that they discuss atheism that much, they probably discuss what changed their minds, how their family took it etc.

Edit: Thats nice of them, they want to help everyone else as well.

For many, their atheism has little to do with seeking the truth, it has more to do with wanting to be "cool" and "with it."

For other atheists, they reject their family's religion because it condemns their favorite sin.

For some atheists, like Jacques Maritain, who seek Truth, they find Him, Jesus Christ, Who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.-John 14:6

My dad's an Atheist. He does crossword puzzles. And is Baffled at my joy of being Catholic.

And so it goes.

Not to be mean but the moose and the elks clubs are not actually moose or Elks but have meeting halls internationally.

So no. not Ironic.

it seems to me that atheism is the belief that there is no god. discussion on the topic may be something like (for example): sharing ideas on how the universe came to be without the help of a deity or finding reasonable explainations for the unknown
2009-07-18 13:33:32 UTC
If you don't mean to offend, do you also not mean to sound stupid? Why the phuck is it ironic or funny for like minded people to meet? Can you explain your idiotic point?
2009-07-18 13:16:10 UTC
Eh, it's ironic enough. But there's nothing against the way of atheism to say not to hang out together....

Why is that funny or ironic?

Lots of people with shared interests or views have group meetings / clubs.

Are you trying to compare their club meetings to church? Not even close to the same.
2009-07-18 13:21:35 UTC
I´d say that would be strongly ironic if it is true. HOWEVER, the irony might be intentional.
2009-07-18 13:15:46 UTC
Ok I am an atheist, and that is just plain stupid. Why do they do that, it is pointless. A group of people that is almost the same as worship
:) :) :)
2009-07-18 13:17:23 UTC
honestly that sounds retarded. like, who need a club to bash religion and brag about how smart everyone is for being atheists? because honestly most of us know that that is what is going on in that club.

Meditation without bible thumper's trying to enter their head ?
2009-07-18 13:15:17 UTC
And how is that ironic? Are they not allowed to meet and talk?

At least they're not talking to an imaginary friend.

duh, They congregate, evangelize, preach, listen to preachers and only believe what the good book and prophets (science books and scientists) tell them. Just think if a scientist suddenly found evidence of a human soul, all of sudden, those atheists who never believed in a soul would suddenly believe it. Even though they knew all along they had one, it takes a man with a degree to write it down before they believe it/think for themselves. Likewise if science says there's no God, they ignore their own feelings and believe it.

Well it's nice to know you're not alone, don't you think? I support 'em
2009-07-18 13:15:45 UTC
I didn't know atheists weren't allowed to have dinner parties.

That is funny. They really are trying to convince themselves. Lmbo!!!!!!!!!!! Please go in there and ask one of them if they believe in Love... because we all know it exists, and we also know GOD IS LOVE! And God is anything GOOD. GOD is a GOOD system. How can they deny something that is right in their face?
2009-07-18 13:14:40 UTC
That is pretty stupid..

It's an "atheist" club?

What do they talk about?
2009-07-18 13:16:10 UTC
