Question:
If God is a perfect, all powerful being, why does he expect praising all the time and absolute obedience?
2006-08-17 05:27:50 UTC
These things are what vain, insecure, power mad, dictators expect of their sublects. They are human failings of the worse kind, not even possessed to such a degree by Hitler or Sadam Hussein. Is it not a terrible insult to God to believe that o Him?

I think most of this comes from human beings trying to assign human interpretation to a universal force that defies human explanation. You will see this evolve over time according to human civilization by comparing the God of the old testament to the God depicted in the new testament. I believe in God, just not the God that is defined by human beings.

Well, you're the one who benefits most from praise and worship. We become tender to His Presence through praise. Worship is like prayer - a means to communicate with Him, and something tangible is exchanged between us and Him as we worship. Worship renews, refreshes, and restores YOU. Worship is more for you, than for Him.....

Is it vain, insecure, and power mad for a husband to have sexual intercourse with his wife? Of course not. Yet a marriage without sex doesn't have alot of intimacy or satisfaction. Trying to have a relationship with God without the worship is pretty much the same way.

As for obedience? He set things up one way - the right way. You want to do your own thing (the wrong way) and not suffer the consequences, and that makes Him a dictator? That's like deciding you want to step off a ten story building, splattering on the pavement below and then yelling against God because He didn't suspend gravity while you did exactly what you wanted to. Something completely contrary to the way He set things up.

Obedience is wisdom. You have absolute freedom living in the boundaries God has established, just like you have freedom from a hospital bed or the cemetary when you obey your parents by not playing and running about in traffic. So obedience is like worship....it's all for you, not for Him.

I don't follow your logic here....

First of all the word perfect in the Bible means "mature"; not faultless. God doesn't expect us to be faultless, but become mature. God is the only One who is perfect, without fault. He doesn't demand that we praise Him and He doesn't expect absolute obedience like you perceive it. He gave us a free will. He wants us to praise Him and He desires our obedience because life goes better for us when we do it God's way. After all He did for us through His Son, it is a just saying to say He deserves the glory and honor, He is worthy to receive praise--all praise because He said to not have any other god before Him. Having other gods brings confusion and distrust and distracts us from our Father. Remember, we are only made of dirt. That should keep us humble, not full of pride.

Incidentally, hellfire, God forbids tatoos--Leviticus 19: 28, and homosexuality in Leviticus 20:13.

We are yo give praise to God because He expects it. It's all through the Bible how different people praised God. The people of Israel praised God for getting then out of Egypt and free of slavery, for example. the peole gave praise to Jesus as He was going to Jerusalem. There are too many praises to list. You'll have to look through the Bible yourself.

We praise the Lord because of what good he hath done. The trees sway in worship, therefore the trees worships the Lord. The waters roar in praises, therefore the waters sing and praises the Lord. We praise God cause of his marvelous works. We have to obey him, cause he is our Father who is in heaven. Obey him,(Honor the Lord your God, he is worthy to be honored.) and you will get stuff like, a big house, or something. But, he wants us to go spread his word, I honor that. I just say to you, Obey the Lord and Praise the Lord.

Because he is God and he has an absolute right to expect praise and worship and obedience as our creator. Would you expect anything less from your children?

Praising is a form of worship in the old testament especially when God walks with his people and as long as they remain obedient and faithful, he will help them all the way. The problem with today's world is that we think we are better than God and don't need his help. Kinda like the story of the tower of Babel where the people build a tower so high to reach up to heaven to get to God but found that they couldn't and they were struck with speaking different languages so that they could not communicate with each other. As long as we live the good life we praise ourselves but when bad incidences happen, we blame God...we have strayed away and need to get in touch with God again, so that is why we have to be obedient to his word to show us our direction again...By sending us Jesus who humbled himself to take the form of a human, we are now restored to be called sons and daughters in Jesus. So we are not inferior beings anymore but equal beings with our brother Jesus. Where is the discrimination as you claim to see? It is you who refuse to acknowledge God's presence and are too proud. Not to worry, God is very patient with you and will wait for you...a thousand years is like a day to him and a day is like a thousand years to him....

this is quite debatable. God expects praising and obedience as to lead the humanity to the right path. for eg: obeying one's parents', parents' tend to provide a righteous path for their children and so as God, who asks his followers to praise him and thank for this creations. anyway, every religion is the same as per rules, but its the people who tend to diversify to suit their wants. sorry this question could go for sentences, but the whole theme is that love humanity.

I've thought of the same thing myself! And I'm a religious person.

The only answer I can come up with is

THIS IS A TEST, ONLY A TEST

But, I was also taught to have faith in the unknown ( God ), and that it's not our place to question why or why not, so I do my best to do that.

God expects worhip as a form of Grattitude and appreciation. We do not have to do anything which is why he has given us free will. But he does expect it and who doesnt expect that? MOthers want you to call them everynow and then let them know you love them, right? God is the same way call on him tell other people how great he is. That is all he ask. Dont seem lke a dictator at all sounds like a parent!

God is a loving Father Who wants what is best for us. We, as rebellious and disobedient children, keep choosing to do what we want, and then we get mad at God when we burn our fingers, after He has told us to stay away.

First off God created the world and we must live up to his expectations. It is like growing up under your parents. Some parents can be liberal and let you do everything whereas others are very careful of what you are exposed too. God cares and doesn't want to see you waste away you life. He also has all the authority to be able to keep you in line because he is all powerful and made our existance.

I dont think God needs us to praise him. I think he wants us to spend our time on earth learning ourselves and helping others do the same.

If u do a good deed to me, u'll want some kind of acknowledgement from me, so that it is conveyed to u that i really appreciated ur favour ........... but what if i go on to say, Forget It i m not thanking u, i neva' need ur favour. this shows that i didnt appreciate u helping me, and u will feel bad in the inside and wont ever help me again ............ its a natural trait for us to wish for an acknowledgement/appraisal for our good deeds.

So, as far as u r concerned, u'll only feel bad abt doing a good deed and probably no more than that. {Just keep on following me here}. But what if i want a favour from u again, Will u help me again?!! Most Probably Not, right? so, who is at a loss, U or Me? of course Me, 'coz of my unacknowledgement/unappraisal of ur 1st favour, i lost a 2nd favour from u ....... { i hope u r uptill here with me} ......... Now, What if i would have Thanked you for ur 1st favour? u'd have had felt good abt doing me a good deed, so u wouldn't turn me down for my 2nd favour. So it concludes if i would have just thanked u, i would have had gained more subsequent favours from u for the each favour that i thanked u for.

Similarly, ur thanks Won't effect GOD, but u'll be doing urself a favour if u Thank GOD for his unbound bounties on u, and it will keep u humble and u'll appreciate the bounties as well as ur life, from GOD. But, if u dont then u'll take all the bounties as well as ur life for Granted, be ignorant and arrogant abt the blessings in ur life, and wont ever be able to fully appreciate ur life and eventually will deviate from The Right Path.

So, do urself a favour and keep on thanking GOD, so that u'll always be reminded of HIM and HIS Bounties and u won't ever lose The Right Track of ur life. Thanks GOD (ALLAH) for giving me a chance to reply to u. Peace to All.

You know how when people get old, sometimes their mind starts to slip and they pass gas at random intervals but nobody says anything? Well, the Judeo-Christian God was made up like almost 3000 years ago. So just show some respect for your elders.

I think that's a misunderstanding! :)

It's good for u s if we praise and follow Him.

It gives meaning and the right direction to our lives, it makes everything simpler and so much more worthwhile and beautiful.

There isn't an insecure old man with a grey beard needing us to praise and obey him.

It's just a gift we receive - to be guided towards fulfilling our own purpose in life. If we choose to accept that gift.

If we choose not to, there is no man with a beard "up there" who cares. It's only your life that's changed. So you should care!

God needs praise because He is a fully relational God. He wants a real relationship with His creation. And don't use ruthless dictators to measure who God is, use God to measure how good or evil man is. You need to flip your understanding a little bit.

this is one question among many i always ask.....want to know what people tell me when i ask? and these have been priests and preachers mind you....."that its not im my intellect to understand such things".......another question i ask is, "does it matter if you have piercings or tattoos or the clothes you wear on your outer exterior? or the length of your hair? or if you have sideburns?" (you know, trivial things to have on a persona...) i was told that god wants a "clean servant".....dont know what the hell that meant.....i bathed daily......anyway i was turned away by religion because of the lame answers these so called "churchgoers" gave......

God want's us to WANT to appreciate His creation and His advice because our WILLINGNESS to follow His advice is GOOD for US - and others!

To want to love Him and His creation - including our fellow human beings, even if they may be our enemies! - from our heart is to live a GOOD life. To want to hurt His creation is sin and doing it we would hurt ourselves.

We should follow His advice because we want to, not because "we've been told".

Our capacity for compassion AND forgiveness are His greatest gifts to us. We need to appreciate them and be gratefull for them.

because God is the creator & sustainer of life & God giveth & God taketh away. but only because of that but because it is due Him, just as u give thanks for people that have done things 4 u & u obey the laws of the land. its the same but on a much Higher scale!!

Why do u respect your parents? On thier birthday u want to make sure you get them somthing really nice right ? well Jesus is our creator and he expects the same thing from us.... He gave us life .. He dosnt need our praise hes WORTHY enough.. WE are the ones that need him!

He gives us all kinds of freedom. But He also gives us advice on how to live a good life and how to re-kindle our latent love for Him. We are free to take it or leave it!

Because it makes you humble. It makes you bow to to someone and not be so bold headed as you are now. To answer to someone for your actions. To make you feel guilty for doing bad, so you wont anymore..to make you feel loved, to love another greater than anyone...TO MAKE YOU A BETTER PERSON

God doesn't "expect" praise, nor does he demand absolute obedience. God ASKS. This is why we were given free will. It's what one chooses to do, or not do. If a person chooses to give their life to God, they WILL praise Him, and they WILL endeavor to obey Him. It's part of having a relationship with God.

If they choose not to, they won't. Simple as that.
