Question:
Who is annoyed when religious people say their belief is "not religion but the Truth"?

If you say you "don't like religion", a lot of Christians will actually reply "oh no, we dislike religion too -- we only believe in the Truth, because our belief is not a religion but the Truth! You like the Truth don't you?"

Anyone else noticed that?

Some religious people play tricks with semantics. Most of these tricks are intellectually immoral. Most of those using them, however, denigrate intellect (not realizing it's their own they denigrate).

It does tend to annoy me some. But not overly much, I usually just gloss over when they say that. Like a poster above me said, if you have the truth, you don't need faith. So actually, they are saying they don't have any faith at all. When actually they mean that they have faith that what they are being spoon fed is the truth.

Does anyone else here take it as an insult when some of the bible thumpers here end their post with "god bless"? Sometimes it reads like they are sneering at me when they say it. lol

I think that the truth has become something totally different than capital Truth. "My wedding ring is on my finger." That is the truth. "There is water in the ocean." Also the truth. These are verifiable facts. "God created the earth" is Truth as stated in a book that says it is Truth. That does not make it true. All it is, and all it can ever be, is something that people BELIEVE is true.

THE TRUTH! That's like saying "9 out of 10 doctors say."..or

"It says right here in the BIBLE..."

NO ONE is an authority over what YOu want to believe except YOU!People give others authority because they are afraid.....

There is no talking to someone who is not using his head.

It is like trying to talk a teenage girl out of falling in love with a 40-year-old drug dealer. They are not using their HEADS, they are using their emotions-fear, love, impatience, pride, arrogance, etc) and justifying it with their minds.

Just smile pretty and keep moving.

Say"yes, I do"and then get outtta there.

It is not your job to talk others out of what they believe-just spend that energy figuring out what you believe about things.

Live and let live.

Na, it's a convenient way of recognizing who is completely unwilling to have a reasonable conversation. There are so many really interesting people to talk with and I appreciate the code the True Believers™ use to let me know they aren't worth much time.

"Truth" is a way of saying "reality" without having the evidence to support it.

It's sad to see how words have been misused by political and religious movements.

You have to have Faith in the Truth, which is the inspired word of God, the BIBLE. See, finding Christ and finding religion are 2 different things. If you have religion, you have something that makes you feel ok to say you have. You don't have to go too into detail with Religion. But Christ....I'd rather have Christ than religion, because he's the one that can save and keep me feeling good, religion is just a thing, Christ is THE THING.

Why would you want to believe in a religion if you did not feel it was the truth?

"Jehovah is nigh unto all them that call upon him, To all that call upon him in truth."--- Psalm 145:18

"God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship in spirit and truth."-- John 4:24

"To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." --John 8:31-32

not really, but then I don't go around telling people I don't like religion. The subject doesn't come up often actually.

Whatever. All I know is, I DO find it irritating when those who cannot see past their noses insist that only THEY know the REAL TRUTH.

Yeah, right. Linear thinkers. Go figure.

I hate when they say that because it just shows how blind they are to the world and just how pathetic the whole religious institution is.

It annoys me when people call christians narrow minded. It usually accompanies a statement of how we are wrong and the person who doesn't believe is right. No if, ands, or buts about it... they don't want to listen to you.

That's annoying.

Not me I love the truth! Would you rather believe a lie? The lie of the world.

Well, their belief IS Truth--for them. What annoys me is when they tell me I must accept their truth as my own and discard my own insights wholesale, i.e. , spiritual imperialism.

Yep. It's called Dogma, the very basis of every religion.

I'm sure they're just as annoyed with you going around telling them that you don't like religion. Wouldn't you be annoyed if I kept coming up to you and saying, "Wow, I really don't like atheism!"

It's annoying.

Yeah, I especially hate it when Athiests and even worse, secular humanists confuse "evidence" with "proof".
