OK My wife and I are giving a bible to our closest family friend for his birthday. He is a Catholic who has recently started attending church with us. The church is a nondominational with Baptist roots. He has been looking for a bible so we decided to give it to him for his birthday. Any suggestions for a message to write in it. Either a verse or somethinig encouraging about God.

I think the Aaronic Benediction (a.k.a. Priestly Blessing) would be a good choice:

"The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace." -Numbers 6:24-26

Peace! :)

I'm betting that the most powerful thing you can give him to encourage him to read it is your own personal testimony. Let him know that you know the book is from God, and whatever else you feel applies to your friend that would encourage him to read it no matter what happens. He can find his own personal scriptures, but sometimes an honest testimony from a friend can be a bigger motivator to get them to gain their own testimony of the book. Plus you can always enhance your message with any number of scriptures, which I would only reference to and allow him to look them up on his own to get him going.

Proverbs 3:6 KJV

In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Romans 8:28 NIV

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

2 Timothy 3:16-17

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

I like 2 Timothy 3:16-17 because it explains what God's Word is for.

My dad wrote to me in my first bible, "For God so loved (his name) that He gave him (my name). It was the sweetest, cutest thing anyone ever wrote to me.

More important than what you write is the commitment of friendship, and fellowship. Your ability to commit and keep obligations to people are far more important than poetic penmanship.
