I am not sure whether to think that it is eternal literal torture or not.
I know some people believe this, but far as I am concerned, I can see their side...cause there are verses in the Bible that seem to state it will be eternal suffering. Well like in Revelations for example.
However, the other side believes that the wicked will burn but will be destroyed soul and body and it wont be literal torture forever...and the fire will not be quenched and cannot be UNTIL it does its job destroying. There are verses that support this like the wicked being as ashes under our feet in Malachi I believe and also that the Bible says in Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. So that says death not eternal torture and Jesus told us to fear Him who has power to DESTROY both body and soul in Hell. Not eternally torture but destroy. That can be found I believe in Matthew 10.
So there are at least those two views. Now I am kind of leaning to the latter more but at the moment I am not sure which. The latter seems more believable to me but that is me.
One thing also that indicates to me that it isnt eternal suffering is that...Jesus paid the price for our sins..in full...and what happened? He was scourged and beaten and hung naked on a cross shed His blood died and rose again.
So Jesus did suffer very greatly BUT He did not suffer eternally. So if the price was eternal torment, then how could Jesus have paid for our sins in full unless He suffered eternally Himself?
Yet Jesus died for our sins and rose again....and that paid the full price for our sins...so if we believe in Him and receive Him...viola...forgiveness and eternal life.
Speaking of eternal life...eternal life is given only to those who believe in Jesus and have repented. We arent immortal. Only God is. So Christians will have eternal life in Heaven...
But if a person goes to hell and suffers there forever never being able to die...they still have eternal life...they are still alive...regardless of the fact they are suffering....
But I believe only Christians born againers have eternal life.
Well either way I'm still trying to figure it all out and think it through.
But so far the latter end that sinners are destroyed makes more sense to me so far.
