laydeeheartless is right. Christianity in India emanated from the British Empire - it ruled India for two centuries. They also gave India the English language.

Me has a point too in that I am Sikh and it had nothing to do with lower caste system of Hindu faith.

The fact you had Indian Christians at school does not prove anything. I doubt they knew their origins all too clearly - I was still learning about my own culture at school. Talk to the Adults or do some research about it!

:-)

EDIT:

mantravid16: you are wrong in saying that India plays 'host' to Sikhs and Jains. UK plays 'host'! Are you that arrogant and ignorant that you are unable to accept that Sikhism and Jainism are BOTH Indian religions and are in fact as much Indian as is Hinduism?

Guru Nanak was born a Hindu in India and founded Sikhism. Therefore, Sikhism is India's 'child'. Moreover, I do not dispute that India has extremes of poverty but calling it a 'poor nation' is a bit much - Malawi in Africa is a poor nation. India is the largest democracy and it is a rich country too. Take Bollywood, Alcohol exports and the IT boom, for examples.

Now, I suggest you do a bit more research on these topics before you start spouting half-truths.

No i don't think so...the British played rule in India and they took christianity with them. Christians did not necessarily give more to lower class people and the fact you have used merely supports it. Just because a school has indian christians...maybe that school caters just for that group...have u ever thought about the rest of the population?

It is not surprising that India has the most number of Missionaries.

You may wonder, out of all the countries in the world, why have Missionaries chosen to attack India? There are four simple reasons:

India is a tolerant nation – In no country in the world is religious freedom available to people as it is in India. There are dozens of faiths which all co-exist. Israel has acclaimed India as the only country where Jews have not been persecuted. One of the lost tribes settled in India, and since then the Jews have built synagogues all over the country and are practicing their religion in total freedom. When Parsis - victims of Islamic ethnic cleansing –fled Iran, then sought refuge in India, a Hindu King gave them shelter and ever since, they have been practicing, their religion in total freedom. There are hundreds of tribes who have their own unique religions and they are all free to do what they like. When China occupied Tibet in the 1960’s, India again took in hundreds of thousands of Tibetan Buddhists including the Dalai Lama, who to this day peaceful live in India. In addition, India has for centuries peacefully hosted Muslims, Sikhs, Christians and Jains.

However, Missionaries abuse India’s tolerant nature for conversion. Instead of peaceful co-existing with other religions as millions in India already do, they attempt to decimate all other religions through by conversion.

Hinduism is not a uniform religion – Unlike other religions, Hinduism is a religion with no founder, no leader, no commandments and no one God. Hinduism is more a way of life than a religion. Hindus accept all Gods as one, all religions as equal but different paths to God. Hindus are different from region to region, family to family. Therefore in this regard, Hindus are willing to hear the points of view from other religions. Missionaries abuse this tolerant and open-minded virtue of Hinduism for their devious purposes.

Access to India is easy – Technically by the Foreigners Registration Act, 1956, foreigners are permitted only to visit relatives and tour places and are forbidden from carrying missionary activities. However, in India, a vast nation with over a billion people, it is difficult to track Missionaries, especially in the rural environments where they usually operate. In addition, Missionaries funded by Western churches and nations often bribe local officials to cover up their activities. For example, Revered Joseph Cooper of the United States carried out missionary activities for 11 years before he was expelled after being an accomplice to Pastor Sam Benson in the raping a 12 year old Hindu girl.

India is a poor nation – Missionaries operate in India under the guise of “charity” efforts when in fact they are simply “buying” converts through gifts and material items. In addition, by selecting a poor nation such as India, they can raise funding from unsuspecting people in other nations who believe they are donating to a genuine charity. By comparison, Missionaries can not work under the guise of “charity” and have not been as effective in raising funds and converting in oil-rich Middle Eastern nations.

Hinduism, as far as I am aware, defines your position in life, how you lead your life then defines your position for your next life.

Islam and Christianity both allow a person to advance their position in this life so both will have a strong appeal to a Hindu who is unhappy with their lot.

The long history of Muslim/Hindu conflict is probably going to stop people converting to Islam though. Christianity is relatively new to India, and so has much less baggage than Islam. While the British were Christian and conquered the country I believe that they were more seen as a European/Western power rather than a Christian one.

It would be a lot easier for Christians to convert others IF they practiced what they preached. OH! What the vast majority of them are preaching is self, so I guess that they are practicing what they preach. It is just too bad that what they preach is not what the Bible teaches! The real reason that the lower casts excepted Christianity is that they have nothing to lose, as they are already on the bottom, but the upper casts have everything to lose.

To escape the caste system was the same reason many lower caste Hindus became Muslims or Buddhists or Sikhs as well as Christians

Good point!

GOD is no respecter of persons.

HE loves us all so much,

that HE gave HIS only begotten SON

to lay-down HIS life for our sins.

JESUS, being from a carpenter's family,

would never have been respected in the

cast system of India.

Your "wishful thinking" and statement is NOT supported by Statistics. Please see Government of India Published Demography based on 2001 Census.--In 2000 years,by goading, coaxing, enticing, promising a definite "Berth" in Heaven, bribing (Harijans what you call the "lower class" people with a little rice and cloth) the Evangelists could convert only 2.3 % of 1,00,00,00,000 people and about 85 % still remain Hindus only. Now they have stopped persuading the 15% Harijans in plains-they are concentrating on the 8% Tribalas in Hill districts and initially succeeded in Mizoram - but now the Hindu Ardent Followers' Associations- have interfered there also and successfully stopped.---But most pathetic and "to be strongly condemned action " was killing an Australian Evangelist and his two small kids(in Orissa) by some "Un-Social Elements". In plains many Christian Harijans started returning to Hinduism , because according Dr.Ambedkar{(a Harijan- Doctor of Civil Laws-D.C.L.(Oxon)} drafted Indian Constitution - Hindu Harijans are eligible for 15% reservations in Free Medical/Engineering education-and in State and Central Government Jobs with 35% aggregate marks in aggregate in Physics/ Chemistry/ Mathematics/Biology.(PCMB) --Christian Harijans Should score 99.9% in PCMB to claim a "Seat" or a Job.---Dr.Ambedkar with his 3000 followers refused to become a Christian(in spite of a lot of persuation and promised un-limited foreign "Gifts" in cash and kind"-because he received his Higher education in England) and became a Bhuddist. Now that is the trend among Harijans all over India.

Hinduism was never a religion. Its living style of different individual in his own way, it has nothing to do with the conversion process. Live as you want to live, let other live the way they like to live.
