I read in "Mormonism for Dummies" that hot chocolate was classfied as "definitely okay" drinks. Doesn't hot chocolate contain caffeine? How is that it's allowed?

Many of the instant hot chocolate packets do not contain caffeine. I would check the package just to make sure.

Also, as for Phillip S's rude comment, don't pay any attention to him. Click on his avatar, he's trolling. He keeps asking the same obscene question over and over.

He's right of course. Hot chocolate is okay even though it's "hot." Futher clarification from the prophet defined hot drinks specifically as tea and coffee. Caffeine is not listed specifically because like any other substance there is a limit the body can take before there is a negative effect. Example....OxyContin - great after surgery for pain management. Not so great a year later when someone is hooked on it. Caffeine is not as addictive as OxyContin but some people (and this is my personal opinion here NOT official church guideline) can't handle caffeine without going off the deep end. Some can. My mother cannot take a few drinks of a cola without getting a splitting headache before the end of the day. I can drink up to 2 cans of Pepsi a day before I see it start to affect my mood and physical being. That's why I limit myself to 3 a week. (Love the stuff) It's all about moderation. Just to clarify, illegal drugs are never okay but there is a time and place for prescription drugs under a doctor's supervision.

From the D&C 89

4 Behold, verily, thus saith the Lord unto you: In consequence of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days, I have warned you, and forewarn you, by giving unto you this word of wisdom by revelation—

5 That inasmuch as any man drinketh wine or strong drink among you, behold it is not good, neither meet in the sight of your Father, only in assembling yourselves together to offer up your sacraments before him.

...

8 And again, tobacco is not for the body, neither for the belly, and is not good for man, but is an herb for bruises and all sick cattle, to be used with judgment and skill.

** 9 And again, hot drinks are not for the body or belly. **

12 Yea, flesh also of beasts and of the fowls of the air, I, the Lord, have ordained for the use of man with thanksgiving; nevertheless they are to be used sparingly;

13 And it is pleasing unto me that they should not be used, only in times of winter, or of cold, or famine.

Is there some other official doctrine refining this? Where is it published?

Is hot chocolate not a hot drink? There is indeed no prohibition here about caffeine, only hot drinks like green tea, herbal tea, hot coffee (not iced).

Coffee and Tea both have ingredients that are harmful besides caffeine. Originally it was written as "hot drinks" and later clarified to be specifically coffee and tea.

The point is that it HAS been clarified by men who we believe to be inspired by God. Sure one could argue that hot chocolate is a "hot drink" but the debate has already been resolved.

caffeine is okay. it's not recommended, but it's fine. besides, all chocolate has a little bit of caffeine in it, and all mormons would be dead without chocolate. i have hot chocolate all the time. you're just not supposed to have strong drink and "addicting substances" most of us have kinda worked around that.

chocolate does contain caffeine but in a very small amount. unlike in coffee and tea, it contains more that can get you addicted. the main idea is to not let you drink caffeinated drinks that can be harmful to your health or get you addicted.

i even heard that coke is okay even though it contains caffeine, as long as you drink it once in a while and not be addicted to it (as some people can be very addicted to it). but do not quote me on it, this i am not sure of.

Caffiene isn't banned by the LDS church. Nowhere in it's Doctrines will you find it. Hot chocolate is one of the few Hot drinks that you will ever find an LDS person drinking.

were splitting hairs here.

The only drinks officially "banned" for members of the church are alcoholic drinks, coffee, and tea.

Those were the drinks spoken of in the Word of Wisdom when it said "hot drinks." It's the equivalent of us saying soft drinks.

So as far as anything else goes I suggest you simply realize that we are commanded to respect our bodies, and treat them as the sacred gifts that they are.

the "recommendation" is no coffee and tea specifically. I know many a Mormon who drinks Pepsi, etc. I know alot who don't, however.Herbal tea is permitted, no caffeine.

Mormons used to be the majority stockholders in Coke and Coffee. They say they have sold their shares to not look hypocritical but I believe they still are major stockholders in anothers name. :o

We asked them about years ago and their reply was "this is a "grey area". Still dont know what that means.

dumb ***! its not recomendations, its called the "word of wisdom" and yes caffine is agenst the word of wisdom.....No im not a mormon, but i do live in utah.. i was raised catholic, and thats why LDS's is so messed up is because they alter there teachings anytime they want, for instance, just in the 1980's they publicly allowed african americans to join the chuch. why did they do this? because they wanted more money.. you know, the 10% of your income inorder to be a good latter day saint!
