I don't follow the man made rules of today, well some of them I do but not all because most of them are ridiculous. I don't live in the same dimension you do. In my dimension reality is what ever you believe it to be. I am my own master and a slave to none. It's called being self sufficient and independent. :)

We're already living in a world without God. Believers just don't realize it.

In any case, God doesn't make the rules. People do, and at least in a democracy, those rules are generally based on some concept of the common good.

As to why we'd obey those man-made rules, there are a number of reasons. Simple respect for others, for one. It's in the best interest of our society for another. Enlightened self-interest for yet another. And if none of those work for you, there's the fact that the government has the authority to put you in jail if you don't obey the rules.

Granted, the rules don't always make sense and aren't always fair (they're made by imperfect humans, after all), but in a democracy, there are ways to change or eliminate bad laws.

Contrary to what many Christians believe, the US was not founded on Christian principles. It is and always has been, in theory and intent if not always in practice, a secular nation. Our government is expressly forbidden by the First Amendment from either endorsing or suppressing any religious belief. Unfortunately, certain neoconservative elements in our society and our government seem bound and determined to change that.

There is no god, and humans make the rules.

Who makes the rules in societies that don't have access to the bible?

The answer is people. Most humans are natural followers. They always pick a leader, or a group of leaders. Usually it's the most charismatic of all the people. The people that are chosen have the power to make the rules.

I follow rules mostly because I agree with them, and partly because it's easier to follow the rule than it is to pay the consequence. Murder is wrong. Rape is wrong. Driving to fast gets people killed, and gets me fined. I understand that rules are there for the benefit of society as a whole, not because god says so.

You answered your own question.

You mentioned, "man made rules."

The rules are made by people.

Are people not the ones making the rules, enforcing them, deciding when they've been broken and what penalties, if any, that gets rule-breakers?

Most people follow rules not because they're worried about hell so much as they don't want to pay fines or go to jail or face ostracism from their society or culture.

Breaking the rules can get you some dire consequences in this very life, here and now.

The main reason I'm an atheist is I don't like a lot of the rules God made up. I don't think homophobia should be a blessing, and eternal punishment is only ok for eternal crimes, so nothing on earth can make you worthy of Hell. I just live by the golden rule, equality, and non violence.

Rules are set by a group. If the rules work, the groups continues to exist. If the rules don't work, either the group changes them, or the group disappears.

Some groups make up a god, and say that the rules come from God. That has been a very successful model.

The society in which you're living makes the rules. In a democracy, those rules are made with the tacit consent of the people, and those people are free to live elsewhere if they cannot conduct themselves according to those rules. Alternatively, they can go to prison or live as outlaws.

I follow those rules because I agree with most of them, and the one's I don't agree with I actively attempt to change through legal, legislative means.

Let me ask you the opposite - do you live your life by God's instructions? Does he make decisions for you?

No of course not, that would be ridiculous; People have the capacity to make their own honest, truly good decisions and rules. If everyone believed in this without turning to their God for advice the world would be a happier place.
2009-02-21 10:18:07 UTC
The time I heard the government made the rules, as well we follow the golden rule.

Dancing?

You mean Drink, don't you?

"Who has the right to make decisions for you and why."

No one. I make my own decisions and I am left to deal with those decisions. There are laws set up by government, chosen by the people. I can choose to break those laws if I want to but I am expected to deal with whatever comes from breaking those laws.

Just because we dont believe in your 'god' doesnt mean that we are 'evil' people. We follow laws made by the government. We dont murder because we dont want to hurt anyone. We dont steal because we want to be fair. We arent crazy people who go off and kill people and break laws. Your 'god' didnt make up all of the laws that I follow. The government and the people did.

To not believe in something you first must recognize it's existence and then choose not to belive in it. However you do belive it exists you just ignore it. So you live in the dark. It's like someone who has never lived in civilization and then must adapt to survive to thier surroundings. They see how things work and they imitate or follow with and conform. Some break the mold and do it thier own way. Eventually you do things your way without direction or emplacement of rules by others.

The main rules of man are reflected upon our basic instincts whether religously based or not.

However atheism is a joke and I'm not a bible thumping jesus lover or anything like that I just find it illogical to not believe in something without first recognizing it exists and then choosing to simply ignore it. Thats really whta an atheist is; a person who simply ignores what is.

Why follow man-made rules?

1) Because humans exist

2) Because of the golden rule (I want others to obey the law)

3) cause they lock me up if I dont.

This athesis is in sink with the teaching of Jesus

-- give onto Ceaser what is his.

In both the cases of an athesist and a Christian, wordly isses are for man to resove. Spirtial issues biblicaly speking is between the person and their God. I can't help that a lot if Christians don't understand their own religion.
2009-02-21 10:08:57 UTC
The 'rules' are in place for a democratic society which means rule by the people. Most people can retain at least a few of the concepts.
2009-02-21 10:03:52 UTC
Many people who believe in God make up their own rules. They just *think* their rules are from God.

e.g. once it was "God's law" in most of europe to never question the Bible. if you do, "God says" it's heresy or blasphemy and you'd likely be executed by "God's servants" and that is "God's will".

Throughout history, deplorable, even cruel actions have been justified by religious people saying "it's not our law, it's God's law."

Man also makes a lot of good rules that aren't in the Bible (I assume you are a Christian).

Like no selling crack.

No public nudity.

No raping people. All secular laws.

People make the rules. Without rules there is chaos. There does not need to be a divine law giver, we're smart enough to figure out that killing and stealing isn't in our best interests.
2009-02-21 10:09:44 UTC
I believe that people are inherently good and that only negative reinforcements in life can push them to hurt others or themselves. If we operate in a community that values cohesion without divisive religions, then we can retain a natural sense of morality. Society will establish and enforce the rules as it does now.

Let me remind you that religion does not own morality. It simply has a narrowed perspective of it.

We make the rules; we always have & we always will, looking at the world today though I think people have forgotten just how powerful they really are. If we want a better world its up to us to act & make it how we want it to be

There would be no law exceptt those made by who ever was the strongest.

don't be ridiculous...rules are created based on what's best for society to survive! we do things not because god said it, but because if we lived like savages, killing, stealing, raping, etc...then society would never grow and humanity would be an even more terrible thing than it already is. Why is it so hard for you to accept the fact that we, for the most part, know whats best for us? god has nothing to do with this! i know that if i were to be stabbed, it would hurt...therefore, I DONT DO IT TO OTHERS! i know if my things were stolen or my wife cheated on me with my neighbor, that i would feel terrible. Apparently you are too small-minded to even accept the fact that you, yourself, know what's best for you. Instead you insist that god has to tell you what to do. Well, if you insist on living your life like a child, go ahead...it perfectly explains your actions.

Society. I have a little video you should watch that may explain it too you. This is thuderf00t's video on atheists and how they obey rules. Mostly, it's by society. If you kill someone or some other awful thing it's bad for society.

Apparently, based on your second paragraph, you do.

Reason decides, which includes using the correct standards for each case of inquiry. Logic and language usage decide linguistic questions, while questions about the world are settled by critical empiricism.

Also, there's laws to prevent me from doing wrong if I wanted to. Though I sidestep them sometimes if I think the law is wrong. :]
