Question:
What do you people think about witchcraft (wicca)?
2007-12-11 17:24:24 UTC
o.k i have been a catholic for all my life, and i have gone to church ones in a while, done my confesion, among other thing's most catholics due. However, i have always been interested in magic, and the "whole spirit world". I am a normal catholic, i pray every day, but this just interest me a lot. i do believe in god, i believe he is the creator and that he absolutly exist. Now, i don't know what to do, i don't want to switch religions i want to do both, wicca and catholicism, i know it's awkward but...... i got to see how, wicca religion is. you see in the country that i am from, they believe in black magic a lot, and their is actual witches who do witchcraft and cast spells on people " now i dont want to be that, i dont want to harm others" just do spells for my own benifit, anyways can anyone help me with this confusion.

own though's about it, will the devil hunt me if i do this?

ok chill out! ok first of all we follow the Harm None rule.

This applies to the environment, other people, animals, yourself. Treat things with respect.NO Bloodshed. No bodily fluids of any sort, from any source should be spilled in the ritual circle, or at any time. It goes along with the harm none rule.Magic should only be used in times of need, and never for any harm. Magic can be used for personal gain, as long as you don't harm anybody. Magic can also be used to help others, and that is when (for me) it seems to work the best.

and black magic has nothing to do with the actual Wicca that is harming others which goes against our rule And I know a christian that is pagan So it is very possible that to be both but of course you cant just wake up one day and say "imma be a wiccan" I started reading at age 11 about Paganism so read do more research and pretty soon you will know what you really want..

have a great day

Oh and remember Wicca does not give you or promises you power and we do not worship satan Thats a christian belief!! and anyone who says they sacrifice animals babies or worship satan is not a wiccan! dont fall for this it makes us look bad..dont be discouraged though!Learn from all sources. You can use books, other people, nature, as long as you learn something. Knowledge can come from many surprising sources. This something can be scholarly, or spiritual

So many great answers here, I don't know what I could add that would make a difference.

My suggestion would be to do some research on Wicca and Paganism and give yourself some time to make an informed decision. I don't know if it's possible or not to be both Catholic and Wiccan at the same time, only you can decide that.

There always has, and always will be good and bad in the world. Just because someone chooses to follow the dark path, doesn't mean you have to. As others have said, true wiccans don't believe in doing "Black Magick" and live by the creed "Do as you will with harm to none".

As far as the "Devil", the Christians created him. You need not worry about being hunted by something that doesn't exist.

First, we need to make a distinction: Wicca is not witchcraft. Wicca is a religion. Witchcraft is casting spells. Many people who follow the tenets of Wicca also engage in witchcraft, but anyone who wants to learn how to cast spells can. The upshot of this is that if you're Catholic, and you want to use witchcraft, you're more than welcome to do so, if you're willing to learn and your conscience allows for it. Merely go to your local occult bookshop and look for books on witchcraft.

You cannot be a catholic and practice Wicca at the same time. That would be like a man wanting to be both a man and a woman at the same time. However, you can be a catholic and a witch at the same time, just as a man can be a man and wear a dress at the same time. Wearing a dress doesn't make him a woman. Practicing witchcraft does not make you part of the Wiccan faith.

It's a crude analogy, but it works well enough.

As far as not wanting to harm others, that's simple. Don't cast spells that are intended to harm others. Easy peasy. Just remember to always take what you're doing seriously and be prepared to accept the consequences of your actions. Even the unexpected ones.

There are religions that combine Catholic with witchcraft--such as Santeria. You might want to research that.

Also a lot of witches never perform magick--which is casting a spell. They just use it as a form of worship. So you don't have to do spellwork at all. Actually the 'witches' who do nothing but spellwork, without getting the know the Gods they're invoking are asking for nothing but trouble! It's like going up to a stranger and asking them to do something important for you. Not a good idea.

And there is no 'devil'--but there is a thoughtform (or energy) that has had a lot of people pouring their energy into it during the past and call it the 'devil'--so there is something, but it isn't evil, it's not Satan, but I personally wouldn't invoke it.

So good luck in you spiritual explorations, and may you find what you are searching for!

There is a subtle distinction between "Wiccan" and "witch".

A Wiccan is a member of a particular religion, which often embraces magic as part of its ceremonies and practices.

A witch is a practitioner of magic, often related or involved with the natural world.

One can be both a Wiccan and a witch, one or or the other, or neither.

It sounds to me like you do not want to be Wiccan; you wish to practice magic. Well and good; magic was considered a requirement for Catholic monks for a long time. There is no conflict there. All magic requires is a focused intent. Any spell can be either black or white--the difference is the intention with which it is cast. It does no harm to ask for help finding a new job, for instance. That is white magic that harms no one. But a spell asking for someone else to be removed so you can have their position would be considered black magic, because you have interfered with another's life and well-being.

You can practice magic within the Catholic faith, secure in the arms of your God and his Son, without violating any of you morals or ethics. The key, as I said, is intent; if your intentions are pure, your heart is good, and you are willing to take responsibility for the consequences of your actions (good or bad) then you will be all right.

Good luck, and Blessed be.

I think a famous or infamous witch once said,

Do what thou shall wilt but harm no one and let that be the whole of the law.

I would think wicca is more a spiritual path then a religion and why people who are wiccan are very ecclectic and individual because they control how they pray, as in ritual, what they put on their alter etc.

Wicca and pagans are usually lumped together and what you should enquire further into is pagan practices and beliefs actually pre- dated christianity and catholicism.

Being from Australia we have christmas in July and my nana who is catholic always wondered about this until I told her it relates to christmas would actually be celebrated in June/July because we are southern hemisphere.

Same as halloween, October in USA or northern hemi-sphere or maybe April southern.

Start researching, knowledge can help guide you but only you can get in touch with what resonates inside you.

First off, you can't be a Christian and practice witchcraft. Mathew 6:24 says:" No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon." If you are a Christian you must respect the scripture. I'm not so I don't. Having said this, I recommend studying witchcraft from a layman's point of view. Try reading The complete book of witchcraft by Raymond Buckland. I don't completely recommend this for a serious practitioner, but it does give a good introduction for the curious....

I hope you find a path that is suitable for you...

Bless,

Well first off, Wiccan does not mean witch. Wicca is a religion. You can be a witch without be a Wiccan, and you can be Wiccan and not be a witch.

Witchcraft could coincide with Catholicism; witchcraft is not tied down to a specific religion. I know others on here will tell you to stay away from it because it's "evil" or "of the devil," but it is not. It really isn't much different from praying - it is simply with the addition of ritual tools, and the focusing and use of energy.

Christianity and Wicca don't play well together, for reasons outlined in the following article:

http://wicca.timerift.net/christianwicca.shtml

Witchcraft, however, is a technique in the same way that prayer is a technique, and is practiced in many different religious traditions, including Christianity and Judaism:

http://paganwiccan.about.com/od/christianwitches/Christian_Witchcraft_Christian_Wicca.htm

http://www.lilitu.com/jap/

So yes, there are people who are Christian witches (regardless of what other Christians have to say on the subject), but as far as I can tell, finding a true Christian Wiccan would be darned hard if not impossible.

I don't believe the "devil" will hunt you. While there are witches out there who use magick to hurt others, many others use it for good purposes. Not all witches are Wiccans btw. Wicca is a religion, while you don't have to be religious to practice the Craft. Just do what feels right to you. No one knows that better than you, by looking inside yourself for answers, not outside yourself.

Also spells for your own benefit are somewhat selfish, while spells to help others in need are spiritually higher. I thank the witches who have been helping me lately, although I don't feel a need to label myself anymore.

Take care.

I am new to that "Old time religion". In my view the craft is merely another way to talk to god. Catholicism has its own version of magic with incense and water turning to wine and drinking the blood of Christ. Ritual, magic, requests, prayers... I think perhaps the craft uses symbolism as a means by which to speak to god... burning a photo, burying a wishlist as if planting a seed to grow, sewing a prayer flag, screaming a painful word into a billowing wind that takes the fear away.

I think I am exploring the old ways in my search as means by which to not let Jesus Christ, Mohammed, Siddhartha, Mao Zedong, and the like get in my way of my relationship with God, the Goddess, or whatever it is you like to call the one in charge.

How about keeping the two separate? Practice the Catholic religion by itself, and practice magic as just a side "hobby."

Wicca is a religion, and its focus is not magic. If the magic is what you're interested in, then you might want to look into other Occult paths than Wicca.

There is right handed and left handed magic. The world of paganism is not black and white, good and evil, but a whole spectrum of color. There are a lot of Christians right now that are becoming "Mystic Christians" like you, practicing magic while following Christianity. There's no harm in it. You should follow whatever path calls you.

I don't see why you can't practice both. Ever heard of Christian Wicca? Well, you can be a Catholic Wicca. Wiccans do not practice black magik, as a rule. In fact, they follow this Rede, and the last line is something like "do what you will, but harm none." And they do believe in God. So go for it!

Speaking as a Wiccan, using magic, casting spells and things like that ARE NOT the Wiccan religion.

Christianity has a long and storied tradition of magic. Try Christian mysticism, instead.

Saying you want to be Wiccan for the spells is like saying you want to be Jewish for bagels, hun.

Obvisously you don't know alot about Wicca.

There are some Christians/Catholic wiccans out there so yes you can do it.

We live by the saying "An ye harm none do what ye will"

So we don't harm people.

Black magic isn't the magic you want to get into.

Try something better.

And spells are like prayers but a little more extravagant.
2007-12-11 17:31:19 UTC
well thsoe so called "witches" you are talking about are not Wiccan at all

and Wicca is not about picking and chosing what you like to make a nice fluffly happy bunny earth based religion.

There are actual "rules" so to speak to follow. You need to find some decent books and DO NOT get anything by Slobber Rabid Waste .. I mean Silver Raven Wolf.

Wicca is not about casting spells that seem cool in the movie The Craft... its about knowing yourself and knowing your world. It is about workign with Nature and working with your diety. You can be solitary but to do that y ou need to really know what you are doing.

Actually Wiccans don't preform "Black Magic" it goes against the belief of first DO NO HARM. What form of "witchcraft were they doing? Witchcraft is an outdated catch all phrase.
2007-12-11 17:32:05 UTC
Okay, dear, you can't be Wiccan and Catholic at the same time. You just can't. We don't believe in the trinity, our God is not your God, our Goddess is DEFINITELY not your Virgin Mary, and the devil doesn't exist. (Really, honestly, the devil does not exist.)

You're either one or the other. You can't be both. The ideals of the two religions are completely incompatible. We recognize the equality of the Goddess AND the God and the multitude of Goddesses and Gods that are representative of them (pantheons). We don't believe in the Bible, the saints (though the saints are a pantheon), baptism, confirmation, or any of that. We do, however, use candles and incense in our ritual.

You can't be both. You can read up on Wicca (I'd start at witchvox.com, or look up Wicca on religioustolerance.org), but you just can't be both.

Blessed Yule.

There is no real magic and it has nothing to do with the devil. Did you know the religion Voodoo or Santeria is a combination of African "Witch Craft and Catholicism?
2007-12-11 17:29:12 UTC
you need to read more about Wicca. We don't just cast spells on people. If we do you have to have there permission to do so. also they don't believe in the devil.

while some people denounce it, there are some people who combine christianity (catholicism is a form of christian...) and wicca.

it can work, though some people do not agree.

I'm pretty sure catholocism has alot of background mysticism that you might be able to look into and connect to things.

Well I would say tread lightly. God forbade his own people in the Old testament with reason. And that was that men relied on themselves rather than relying on God. But that about covers everything doesn't it?

For me personally, I choose to want a close fellowship with the creator of the universe who is God. He is all I need and nothing more.

There's no such thing and all those "witches" who were killed were murdered people just like Jews during Holocaust. They are allowed to believe what they want. Its the killings that are wrong.

Jesus Christ wanted us to know about and use our spiritual power. But for self-growth. Whereas

the Wiccan slogan, "As long as it hurt noone, do what thou will." Can easily go to, "As long as I don't think it's hurting anyone, I'll do what I want."

The Road to Hell is paved with Good Intentions.

And we should never use our power to bend others and situations to our will alone. But make our requests to our Creator, and say, "But not my will be done, but yours." As our Creator better knows what the outcome will be.

God strongly disapproves of witchcraft and calling on spirits.

If you do such things prepare to answer to God for it.

You are not going to like it.

Yes, the devil will hurt you for this. There is once this lady who did that same thing too. I think that she went missing or something. It is your choice, but it is a evil thing to do. Anyways, it is the devil's work, don't do it.

Yes, magic comes from the power of demons. I am not against however, going to wiccan meetings etc to see what it is like. Hopefully you will get to see evil spirits first handedly so you can discern for yourself.

You can see plenty of the spiritual world as a christian. I have seen a little.
