Question:
Why do non-believers think that all religions are equal and we serve the same God?

I read the news paper daily and I have noticed articles describing Muslims in Iraq killing Christians. There are also reports of Hindus in India forcing Christians to convert or suffer the consequences of death. How could anyone possibly think that all religions are equal and that we worship the same God?

Just as all roads in the U.S. don't lead to New York, neither do all religions lead to the same God. Even a superficial look at the various "scriptures" belie that argument. Nevertheless, in the name of political correctness, no one can be "wrong" about religion. (Except Christians.)

Hindus in India, i believe, are actually protesting against Christians trying to convert Hindus over.

It's all quite messy, true :-)

But what does that have to do with all religions being equal? We all worship God, just call Him different names, ascribe different stories to His miracles and presence, and attempt to figure out what is mostly unknown in our own individual ways.

I think many people worship religion more than they worship God. They'd be more willing to 'fight' for the cause of saving their religion from some alleged blasphemy instead of doing some inner reflection and saving themselves.

What evidence do you have that says your religion is right over the evidence that other religions are right?

All religions are based purely on wishful thinking and an old book. In that respect they are all equal.

I do not think that you serve the same god. There have been thousands of distinct and separate gods that have been fervently worshiped over the ages.

As for the cruelty against Christians, they are just doing what Christians have been doing since the dark ages. Do not try to paint yourself into a portrait of martyrdom when you have so much blood on your own hands.

Saying "all are in error" is not the same as saying "all are equal." Saying "all gods are imaginary" is not the same as saying "all gods are the same god."

I personally have never heard a non-believer say this, although I have heard some new-age type believers say something similar. That's not to say no non-believer has ever said such a thing, I just think you're confused.

If you are interested in the new age, all-gods-are-the-same-god philosophies, try starting with the writings of the Dalai Lama, or, ask a different question.

I think that teachings of individual religions are not equal- eg. allowing polygamy is not equal to asking for life-long faithfullness and chopping off ones hands for theft or stoning for adultery is not the same as non-violence etc.

I believe in God and think that everybody should be rewarded for good deeds, regardless what each religion preaches.

So, I think that while the teachings of particular religions are not the same, the people of any religion or none are equal and should be equally punishable for any harm they do to others, doesn't matter how they try to support it by interpretation of their scriptures.

There is a "Christian" nation that dropped a bomb on Nagasaki, and Hiroshima. Now that same nation is killing Muslims in Iraq and Afganistan by unknown thousands upon thousands. I gues an "eye for an eye" makes them equal.

Jesus said, ""Not everyone who keeps saying to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will get into the kingdom of heaven, but only the person who keeps doing the will of my Father in heaven", Matthew 7:21.

Jesus will not be impressed by how many souls we kill on a battlefield, but how many we introduce to Him.

I thought the entire point of those people killing Christians was because, in their eyes, Christians are worshipping the wrong god.

The condoned behaviors of different religions and sects are not all the same. Of course the quality of their adherents behavior will be of a varying nature. As to gods, it seems likely that there are none, and people of faith only serve a creed.

No one should kill anyone. I read Christians enslaving Africans to colonize the Americas. I have read history books where Christians cause the genocidal killing of the Native Americans. Don't just state it like Christians are so persecuted.
2008-10-22 10:51:20 UTC
Well, I think that all theists believe in one or more imaginary beings, and there is no difference to me. However, I do realize that the Judeo Christian God is not Zeus, nor is it Apollo.

It's just as imaginary, but still not the same imaginary being.

Non believers don't believe that, as an atheist i believe that all western religions believe in a God with similar attributes as for the eastern religions, well that's a different story.

Atheist don't believe in God so that is irrelevant.....

I believe that Muslims, Christians and Jews serve the same God.

That's blatantly obvious.

Those particular Non- believers are correct. We are all equal and we serve the same God. They clearly understand it, where the religious can become so self righteous that they just don't get it. We are all God's Children and God answers to different names.
2008-10-22 10:44:55 UTC
I have never said that you serve the same God and that you are equal. But if you take into account that there is no God, then your assumption seems to be correct. You all serve something that does not exist.

I do not.

However, you do all blindly accept things with no evidence, and most of you talk to yourselves, convinced there's an invisible man in the sky listening.

And really, if you follow logic, and look at the SHOCKING similarities between all religions, it would indicate that you all might be worshipping something that's basically an offshoot of Astrology and/or Paganism.

But, oh wait, most religious folk despise Evolution, and couldn't notice a pattern to save their lives, and any threat to what Billy Bob Retard preacher said is heresy, and science is eeeeeevvvvviiiiiillll (because we don't understand it, hyuk hyuk) and the Rapture is coming...

Sorry, frustrated-Athiest moment there...

So, basically, if you approach it with a logical, accepting point of view, but as a believer (say, as a true Agnostic), all the evidence really does seem to point towards the fact that you're all worshipping the same guy. But, Christians start backing up, hissing, and making a little cross with their fingers when I go into detail on stuff like that.

The keyword IS God

In it´s name, at THIS day and age, people are dying

I don´t care what is name of it, i just like to point out, how ridiculous and sad it is, in 21Th, century, with all the knowledge available, killing each other for invisible sky dad.

There is only one God and all those who truly practice their faith are on a spiritual path that converges on the same single God.

Those people are what we call fanatics or radicals, pressuring their beliefs into others in such harsh ways, and unfortunately, these fanatics or radicals can be found in any organized group, and usually give that organized group a bad name.

All religions are equally bogus.

Maybe you should take a closer look at the history of Christianity. It makes the Islamic faith look pretty damn good.
