"Jaware" or tender shoots which are seen and worshipped during the Navaratri festival are of great importance. one teh first day the 'Nava-Dhanya' (nine cereals) are planted in moist soil in an earthen vessel at the time of invoking the Goddess Shakti. The pooja continues for 9 days wherein offerings are given and poojas performed to nine prominent forms of Shakti. During these days the nava-dhanyas sprout and shoot out in their vibrant and soothing green color. on the tenth day (Mahadashami/Dussera) when the visarjan is done these shoots are immersed in water bodies.
The purpose and significance of 'Jawaras' primarily is to recognize and associate the festival of Navaratri with worshipping the feminine form of 'Bramh' called the Shakti.
Earth denotes fertility, endurance, and a giving nature; Navadhanyas denote nine forms of tastes, rasas, and emotions, and together with the watering of faith and devotion, they sprout denoting life and its energy. as the days pass by the energy increases which is seen in the growth of the sprouts. These sprouts represent the vibrancy of life and reminds us of the nature of worship we are doing.
Indeed this festival and practice of Jawaras is a form of worshipping the Mother Divine.

My breed was created just to keep me waiting on them!!!. Seriously, they are considered one of the oldest, if not the oldest ancient breed. They have DNA of the same era as the wolf and coyote.(30,000 to 150,000 years ago) They appear to be a 'natural dog' and are called by the natives of their origins, as Noah's dog, as they have been around as long as their known history. So, what were they bred for? Well, they were used to hunt. I'm not sure that they were officially 'bred'. They hunted gazelle and leopard.. They were also herding dogs, and still have strong herding instincts. They were never fed by their masters, but set loose to hunt at night, for their own sustenance. They were sheared each year, at the same time as the flocks, and their hair was used to make headwear and underwear, as it was softer than wool, and had no odor when wet. An interesting fact, that has kept the breed pure over the many generations. The females will rarely breed with another breed. Other breeds don't recognize their pheromones, and the females show no interest in any other male dog. Many females are loyal to their first mate, and won't mate with a dog who is a stranger. The only time you get a mixed breed, is if the two were raised together ( pack) or an occasional wondering male. Currently, they are used for predator control and the sport of lurecoursing...and teaching their owners patience!

Prevalent practice is of sowing pulses, cereals and other seeds on the first day of this festival in a pot which is watered for nine days at the end of which the seeds sprout. This pot is worshipped throughout the nine days. This custom is also indicative of fertility worship and is known as "Khetri".It is significant of prosperity and abundance. On the first day of the Navaratras, grains of barley are planted in the puja room of the house. Every day some water is sprinkled on it. On the tenth day, the shoots are about 3 - 5 inches in length. After the puja, these seedlings or the "Khetri" as this is referred to is submerged in water . This custom suggests a link to harvesting. The sowing and reaping of barley is symbolic of the "first fruit".
