I think when you're talking about India in particular, there is an rich and glorious Islamic tradition in India that goes back to the warriors of the Moghal Empire. Also, much of what Gandhi was practicing, tolerance for example (between Muslims and Hindus) has been written in the Qur'an. So it's not antithetical to some of the values that the people of India share.

They said that Hindus used to be deities but have forgotten this and so have begun to worship those who they used to be. I personally think there's no need for any religion, but the premise of Islam is needed for salvation, that there is only one God. The premise of Christianity regarding God is downright false, and Hinduism is not even a religion.
