Question:
Regarding Gay Marriage: Why must Christians try to impose their beliefs on the rest of society?

The above links to a question regarding homosexuality. Let me start by saying that I recognize that the Christian religion and Bible regards homosexuality as a sin and this is not what I want to debate. What I want to know is why must you try to impose those beliefs on the rest of society?

My main point is: If the Christian church refuses to perform or acknowledge homosexual unions or marriages that is their right. There is nothing wrong with it because the government cannot impose it on the church. If the church doesn't want to perform or acknowledge gay marriage, then they don't have to and can't be forced to (if gay marriage were legalized throughout the US). But why must the church and Christian followers try to impose their beliefs on the rest of society, including the government, by fighting legalization of gay marriage? How would legalization of gay marriage affect you in any way?

First, please do me a favor and recognize that the fundamentalists who want to impose their will on everybody do NOT speak for all Christians. They don't even speak for a majority of us. The most recent data shows that those opinionated loudmouths are only one third of all Christians in this country.

I am a Christian. I support and back (through voting, through donations of cash and time) the right of every American to marry whomever they want, regardless of race, color, creed, or sexual orientation. I know many, many Christians who think and feel as I do on this. We're not all small-minded.

In my opinion, no church should be required to consecrate _any_ marriage, if that marriage does not fit within that church's belief system. But civil marriage by a Justice of the Peace, and the rights, benefits, and responsibilities that go with it is not the jurisdiction of any church.

As to the whole concept of "defending marriage" that keeps being shouted about:

My marriage needs defending from nobody. Certainly not from Bill and Joe, or Sue and Margaret. I fail to understand how two men or two women marrying each other would harm MY marriage, or any other person's marriage. The whole concept of defending marriage is just ridiculous.

And let's not even go into the kids issue. "Children need a mother and a father, otherwise they don't have a real family!"

My answer to that is ALWAYS: Tell that to every kid with one dead parent. A family is whatever it is. So long as the children are loved and cared for, does it matter what genitals the parents have?

Anyways. To sum up:

Not all Christians are closed-minded loudmouths who support that agenda.

Heterosexual marriages will not be endangered by homosexual marriage.

Families are whatever they are. Nobody's business but their own.

While I personally don't agree with gay marriage I wouldn't ever impose that view on my friends. My best friend is gay and has been a long term relationship for many years. I've never had a better friend and would never ever think of pushing her in a corner and destroying our friendship.

As a Christian I believe the only real way we can make an impact in society is by our own example and through the raising of our families.

I heard Malcom X once say in an interview that you can't legislate morality. He's right. Laws are there to keep us safe from one another, not change us.

Actually some Christian churchs actually marry gays. It's states that don't.

States have a right and people that run those states have a right.

Most liberal who are for Gay marraiges don't know much about homosexuality at all, have never been to a gay bar, have never been to a bath house, have never been to a hall where 12 year old boys close dance with each other.

The first time I saw that it was very, how can I put it, impactful on my mind.

Now, if you're a mother and YOU find your son there at 12 dancing and kissing I think you're gonna have a whole nother view of homosexuality.

I think if you're a wife and you findyour HUSBAND in a bay bar hugging and kissing a man you are going to have a totally different view of marriage and homoseuxlaity and liberablism.

I think when you go to the park with your 5 year old children and see men kissing men and women kissing women on blankets in public you are going to have a different view on homosexuality, unless you are already a lesbian.

If you're a lesbian you probably think it's weird that girls kiss guys!

I mean guys are so, icky!

I know a lesbian who is trying to get inseminated, probably with a turkey baster and have a baby with her girl friend.

She's very outspoken. Very pro lesbian. I don't know if she'll make a good mother or not, but her orientation has nothing to do with that, it's her type A and aggressive attitude that bothers me. I wouldn't want that in my wife.

This girl I wouldn't mind making babies with doesn't view sex as a bed room sport, isn't into sleeping next to someone all the time or even part of the time, but when I watch her with her sisters kids, she build her world around them.

I would rather have less sex or no sex and be with a woman who love children and buildes her life around them then a sex fiend or nympho who yells at them all the time because they are in her way.

Christians feel it is their duty to share the knowledge of the bible and all the good therin. As a Christian you are supposed to spread the Lord's good word and his works. That also means the "bad". The bible does speak of homosexuality as being a sin, so therefore a Christian is going to let it be known what the bible says of that issue. I think saying they are imposing their belief is taking it a stretch although that may be exactly what their doing, if you can understand what I am saying. Put it like this: if someone believed that apples were bad and their God told them to spread the word that the apples were bad and anyone who ate one would go to Hell, then that's what they would be doing...although someone else who has eaten an apple may feel like it's the best tasting apple in the world and they don't want any other fruit. Do you get me?

Very good question. The most viable period for the Christian church was during the earliest period when the church was being persecuted. Now that the church is so firmly established it has begun to try to legislate it's ideas rather than to move people to personally embracing those ideas. In short it is acting as a body completely differently than Christ taught.

Another point to consider. Some churches do indeed bless gay couples marriages. Yet they are not allowed to give those marriages legal status. At the funeral of a close friend who died of a heart attack his pastor spoke of him and his husband saying "they enjoyed a long marriage blessed by the church, and recognized by God, but alas, not by the state."

the whole thing in a nut shell is this, All Christians believe that they must work for God, and that converting others to beleive what they beleive is the only way to save the world. Homosexuals just got caught up in it. There is no actual words to state anything for or against homosexual relationships. There is verbage that basically says (written in old english/ and can be easy to misunderstand) we should only have sex in a monogamist relationship. Christians world wide have interpreted these words to what they want it to be. Don't ask me where in the bible because I have a short term memory problem, but I didn't just take someones word on this I looked it up and read it my self. I ask all people to read the bible and find out the truth for them selves.

The only logical argument against gay marriage I can think of is this, people are afraid of what they don't know and all new things are scary. By the way I'm not gay, I just don't want anyone to tell me who I can be in love with, so I don't think I or anyone else has the right to tell anyone who to be in love with. The fact that people fall in love to begin with and want to spend their lives together is an amazing thing. Please excuse any mispellings my spellcheck don't work.

They fear that if homosexuality becomes common place and they are allowed to marry then their children might see that homosexuality is alright and they might try it. As a Pagan and Witch, I see their discontent with my religion as having the same fear for them. By censoring, they feel that out of sight is out of mind. It is hard to explain to people who have such strong beliefs that children often do the very thing that their parents don't want them to. They don't understand that homosexuality isn't a choice and no matter what they do or what laws they support there will always be gay people and if they drive them so far underground that they won't know who their enemies are. At least now they know who to stay away from!

There are several different types of Christians. None of which are actually following Christ to the T.

Humans are very self absorbed, and when we have an idea, we think that everyone else should share it, contribute to it and abide by it-naturally.

Why don't you write to your congressman/woman and ask them why gay marriage is not legal. Is it a crime against humanity, or do people, in general, regardless of their religion, think that it is not OK, and that marriage should be constituted for one man and one woman. and vote accordingly.

(I couldn't care less if 2 men or 2 women wanted to get married, it doesn'nt concern me) Besides, there are ways in which to get the same benefits that married people have, without the 'paper.' they go to an attorney and say, I want this person to be able to do ....

I'm a Christian, and I don't try to impose my beliefs on everybody. I actually don't think the government should be allowed to legislate this issue at all. I think gays should be allowed to be married, or at least have the benefits given to married couples (i.e., being able to visit your SO in the hospital). I personally wouldn't be comfortable with gay people being married in my church though, since I believe that it is a sin. I think it should be up to each individual church whether or not that church wants to wed gays.

The argument is that marriage is a religious relationship that happens to have legal recognision. If gay couples unite, that is not so much the problem as calling it a marriage. Again, marriage is a religious term, it just happens to have legal standing which is why gay couples feel they have the right to be married. If christians can accept that gays have the right to a soul mate and gays can recognize that marriage is a religious thing, I think both side would be happy with calling a gay union a "civil union" or something else with all the legal rights as a marriage.

Christianity as a religion is called to deliver its message. The way christians see it, they are the deliverers of a message. You can't expect the deliverer to change the message they are given. Also, this is a predominantly christian country that reflects christian beliefs and views about the world. Democracy is all about representation of the majority and respect for the minority (in theory). I suppose most christians feel as though they have to speak out "the message" and that is why it comes across as pushing their beliefs off on other people.

It's not so much that it would affect anyone. For me, it's the fact that marriage is a holy union, meaning recognized by God. For many Christians, marriage is the act of coming before God and bringing their relationship to His eyes and vowing to behave in the way that He said a man in wife in matrimony should. Kind of like baptismal; it's acknowledging your dedication to God. So for a homosexual, which the Bible is adamently against, to say that they share that HOLY union is kind of offensive to a Christian.

For me, I'm concerned about the state of the country. I don't care if gay people want to spend their whole lives together and get the same tax benefits as married couples. That's their business. But I don't feel it's a HOLY union because the Bible states that it's wrong. The reason why it bothers me personally is because I feel so deeply that it's wrong. Kind of like abortion. It's not effecting me, but I don't want to see it happen because I feel so deeply against it.

Besides that, once the government makes it legal, people who are against it become the minority and are seen as bigotted and close-minded.

Most people are scared by this because they are ignorant of the issue. Most people do not have friends or relatives that are gay, and for the most part never have to deal with the issue. They become ignorant and do not know the facts because they are blindsided by newspapers and media. America will open its eyes just like it did to slavery and other prejudices it has faced. There are people in this country who still have trouble with people from other countries and accepting them. Gays will be there, albeit later down the road.

Thank you. Speaking for myself and not all gay men, I feel the same as you. With respect to all the people who scream about marriage being a religious 'institution', why aren't they screaming in front of their respective city or town halls when hetero couples get married by a civil servant. And these are marriages that are just as valid as those performed in any house of worship.

Problem is Homosexuals have a place in society less than Christians. Everybody wants equality. The problem is, everybody wants equality with the person above them, not below them. They will want suppress those below them and try to achieve what the guys above them want. They already have marriage. Plus, i think that's mostly fundamentalist who are like that.

It's Christianity's nature (and indeed the nature of all religion). They say they answer to a higher power, this power is above the judgments of man, and therefore above government. If said higher power tells you something is to be avoided then it is likely that religion would want to change government to match religion.

The worst thing about all of this is that most Christians are ignorant of their own book.

An example:

Lev. 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

Wonderful, if people have gay sex put them to death.

Lev. 20:9 For every one that curseth his father or his mother shall be surely put to death: he hath cursed his father or his mother; his blood shall be upon him.

So now you have to kill kids that curse their parents... Mind you this is the same book and everything as the gay quote. People just like to pick and choose.

You have a very good point and have a great way of seeing it.

People can believe what they want to - they have the free will to do it. But I, like you, get very irritated when I see religious people trying to shove their religion down the throat of others. It's only going to drive them away from the Church, not embrace it.

Articulating one's belief is not "forcing" anything on anyone. Could what you call "forcing" simply be other's reactions that maybe all those "forceful" Christians are telling the truth after all? Sin-it is what it is. It does not matter if 500 million people agree with you, sin is sin. It is what it is-period. No debate. A bunch of "enlightened" idiots do not a difference make.

There is certainly a link between society, laws and lifestyle. Why should I pay for the state treatment of gay people through my taxes for their own confused life style? There is enough evidence of high risk of HIV infestation among gay population. Aren't they a burden on the society?

Now, you can very well counter the above argument by stating that there are enough illness among confused life styles of the non gays. And I will completely agree to that.

So that's where the Christians come into the scene to say through laws and legal means available that marriage is between one man and one woman, no premarital indulgences, no abortions and so on.

If you are in it, then you take up the responsibility for the actions that come out of it. Don't force your life style on me or on my kids, or on my grandkids...

Here's an angle-

to go with many changes in society, what was once seen as wrong, or bad, has to be seen as the opposite.

How? By saying there are no absolute truths.

All is relative, right?

But is THAT right?

Truth does not change, no matter what popular opinion says.

If you knew there was a bridge out, down the road, and your Mother, or a friend, was headed straight down that road,,,would you tell them? Or would you just say, oh well, I'll let them go on and die a terrible death? You would try to stop them from heading down that road, wouldn't you..That is all Christians try to do...to stop you from a terrible, eternal death.

Remember the sign over Hell, in Dante's Inferno....."abandon hope, all who enter here"...I don't want that to happen to anyone I know..

Because their religion - actually, their own particular cult of their religion - insists that it's the One True Way, so they tend to forget that the only reason they have the right to worship as they choose is that they live in a secular democracy in which all belief-systems are supposed to have equal sway.

The "Christians" on these boards are constantly at each others throats over petty scraps of dogma - but they think that they want America to be a "Christian Nation?" Which brand of Christianity? Perhaps they forget that this country was actually settled by one group of Christians who were escaping from another group of Christians so that they could have the freedom to worship as they chose.

The argument that "You've got it all wrong - it's gay people who are trying to impose their beliefs on us" always makes me laugh. How exactly does that work? Do you think that gay people are trying to fix it so that YOU have to marry the same gender? No? Then how are they "imposing a belief" on you?

Chritians try to impose their beliefs on society because it is what they are taught to do. They read it in their bible that witnessing and bringing the word of God to the damned is a necessity. They feel as though they are saving those who are falling and in the Bible Gay marriage was not meant to be so when christian regard gay marriage they are totally against it and try to help in what way they were told best, to speak their opinion and save sinners

I think it is important for people of many different religions to stick firmly to their beliefs and it is okay for them to have their beliefs, but when they start forcing those beliefs on others or harming others with those beliefs they have crossed the line.

P.S. It's not just Christians who try and impose their beliefs, although they take most of the blame, most religions have people trying to impose their beliefs and even athiests and agnostics try to impose their beliefs. Many people just need to learn a little more tolerance.

Well, to be honest, most so called Christians don't understand what the Bible really says about Homosexuality. In reality, the bible doesn't even mention it in it's original language. The things Paul was talking about in his letters had little to do with same sex relations and a lot about the practice of trading a young boy sex for gifts, a practice that was widely accepted in Ancient Greece and Rome. Sodom and Gomorrah had nothing to do with gay people and a lot to do with idol worship and cruelty towards outsiders. But you really need to read the word in the original Hebrew and Greek. Sadly, so many preachers teach a false doctrine. I could go on and on about the words and how they've been twisted or mistranslated, so often many Christians are not open minded enough to listen. The truth is, the Bible doesn't mention homosexuality because it wasn't a big deal. You can blame King James for the origins of this false teaching, he was a closet homosexual who was afraid of his true feelings and thought witches were trying to control his mind. To hide his secret shame, he had the Bible changed to fit his agenda.

I am NOT! I just don't want them shoving it down my throat. I can't even read my Bible at work on my break because it may offend some one. I have been told I will get fired if I talk at all about my faith because it might offend some one who hears me. I answer question and get pulled into the office and written up because of people shoving their beliefs down my throat. They removed the Bible out of schools and Christians just let it go. They removed prayer out of school and Christians just let it go. They started killing Babies and Christians just let it go. They told us we are no longer aloud to Speak openly about Christ with out some one calling the police. If I pray out loud in a restraint I have been told by the manager of the Golden Coral that we had to leave because I offended some one. Yes I am fighting for my faith. I will no longer take it. I will no longer have some one uses God name in vain around me.

As christians, true believers in Christ, we are bound by our beliefs to stand up for the morality of the bible. If we don't openly oppose what we believe to be immoral behavior then we wouldn't be following our beliefs.

I am against gay marriage. Marriage was created by God for a man and a woman. With the choice of a gay lifestyle comes consequences, which include no right to marriage.

Feeling attracted to the same sex may not be a choice, but chosing to act on it is. I have no hate for gays, it's their life to lead however they choose by their own free will. But I openly oppose their right to something that God created.

As I understand it, their bible tells them they have to "witness" to non-believers. "Witness" being defined as sticking their irrational beliefs in your face every chance they get. No one apparently has the right to live or believe in a non-Christian manner. And by not meekly agreeing to live under the yoke of Christianity, non-Christians are unjustly restraining Christians' right to practice their religion.

The practice of homosexuality is destructive to the human soul. God makes it clear that homosexuality is a sin (Leviticus 18:22; 20:13; Romans 1:26–27; 1 Corinthians 6:9; Jude 1:7; 1 Timothy 1:10; Revelation 21:8). Supporting gay marriage is a sin because it means to support homosexuality and the perversion of Holy Matrimony. If a nation legalizes gay marriage, that nation will be cursed.

Homosexuality is caused by iniquity. Iniquities (tendencies that cause one to sin) pass down the generation line (Numbers 14:18). When one accepts Lord Jesus as their Saviour, God forgives their sins and removes their iniquities (evil tendencies) in the subsequent transformation process which makes one more and more like Christ.

2 Corinthians 3:18

But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Hebrews 9:12-14

Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Titus 3:5

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

After genuinely accepting the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour, ALL sinners (those who practice homosexuality, alcoholics, liars, drug addicts, fornicators etc.) will be saved and transformed. Each believer is cleansed by the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ and receives the infilling of the Holy Spirit who renews them.

REDEMPTION BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH

Because mankind is incapable of meeting God’s standard of perfection necessary to abide in God’s presence (Romans 3:19-20,23), God sent His Son Jesus Christ to pay the total debt for the believer’s sins and mercifully credits to his account Christ’s righteousness (Romans 3:21-28,5:1-11; 2 Corinthians 5:18-21). Jesus’ gracious act of atonement was complete and covers all sin (Colossians 2:13-14; 1 John 1:9). Salvation is not based on good deeds but according to the mercy of God (Titus 3:4-5). Believers are justified by faith; it is a gift by God’s grace (Romans 4:3-8; Ephesians 2:8-9). A true, living faith will result in a desire to live a holy, loving life of good works (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:6; James 2:14-26), but failure to be absolutely successful at righteous living does not negate the believer’s justified status.

If you sincerely say this prayer, your sins will be washed away, you will be redeemed to God, be saved from eternal torment and inherit the Kingdom of God:

"Dear Jesus,

I am a sinner.

I repent of my sins.

Please forgive me and save me by your shed blood;

come into my heart.

I want to receive you as my own personal Lord and Savior.

Amen"

I think that society is imposing their views as well. Making gay marriage legal would only make homosexuality more open than it is now. If they are bent on their sin, they need to at least keep it within the confines of their home. The world doesn't need to know about it. It isn't fair to contaminate our children's minds with things like that. They will think it is a normal thing. So I guess there's two sides to every argument.

On this issue logic goes over their heads. Not all Christians are against gay marriage. I remind myself of that a lot. I try not to judge them by the ignorance of others.

Christians, If you are against gay marriage, don't marry a gay person. Otherwise it is none of your business.

True let them decide. But all great nations that have allowed it in the fast have fallen. I do believe its there choose and they have to worry about the outcome and how it affects everyone around them.

Well, I'm a Christian and I am not against gay marriage so there goes your little generalization. I believe we are all the children of God and we all deserve the same rights. It's only for God to judge.

Not all Christians are rude, just like there are rude athiests, muslims, buddists, etc.

I'm a Christian and I know that God wants you to be kind and treat EVERYONE with respect and thats what I do.

Its socially unacceptable, there will be a day when the gay marriage will be legal all around the world, I'm against gay marriage, I believe that being gay is just sick, it might not affect me physically, but emotionally it does a great damage to the people who are against it, and who believe in the Bible.

Why should proponents of Gay marriage impose their beliefs on society? If people think something is wrong should they just stay silent and do nothing? People who preach tolerance are only tolerant if you agree with them.

Our society is what we make it. Why should anyone be forced to be silent about what they think their society should or shouldn't be?

I'll keep on voting my conscience, and I encourage everyone else to do likewise.

I consider myself a Christian, and I don't do that. I believe everyone should have an equal right to marry who they wish, so its not all Christians.

Marriage is between one man and one woman.

With that being said, I have no problem with civil unions, or domestic partnerships, or whatever you want to call it.

Christians are not imposing beliefs on anyone. It is the homosexuals who are trying to impose their beliefs on society. You have it asss-backwards.

Why must gays impose theirs. Treating someone with respect isn't the issue (previous answerers). If you are Christian and you know Gods character, you'd also know God frowns on us being wishy washy. If God says it's bad then it's bad according to His standards. Are we trying to make ourselves out to be better than God by saying it's okay for gays to marry? Get off the fence and choose now whom you will serve. Either you love God and hate the world (it's sin) or you love the world (it's sin)and hate God. You can't love both so therefore you can't be a true follower of God if you accept the very things He says is detestable.

They shouldn't be allowed to. It makes me ill. This is NOT what my family died in wars for. They died for everyone's freedom, not just Christians.
