Buddhism and Jainism was growing in india while Hinduism was on the decline. Then Adi Shankara shows up, loses debate after debate, then starts preaching vegetarianism when the vedas clearly has animal sacrifices, including killing cows..

Buddhism was driven out of India by the Muslim invaders. Also almost all of what Adi Shankaracharya preached was already in the Upanishads.



He can't have ripped off Buddhism because Buddhism asserts that Atman does not exist (Anatman) whereas Shankara and Hinduism in general asserts that Atman does exist.

There is a difference though in that Advaita philosophy of Adi Shankara says that Brahman and Atman are one and the same. The other philosophies of Vedanta assert that Atman is different in some way to Brahman - either in size or quality.

Buddha has already stated the decline of the path when his followers would deviate & divide into different schools. Division leads to be conquered , rules & converted . Thats why he always advised against schism.

Similarly Acharya Aadhi Sankara also debated with Buddhists' Monks (In his Period Buddha Bikkus Dharma Keerthi -- Rathna Keerthi were well known) Acharya Sankara "Eulogizes" the the intellectual brilliance of Andra Buddha Bikku NAGARJUNA



Even among Hindu Sectarian branches he debated with Kapaalikas --Meemaamsikas (he met a very famous Meemaamsikha sri.Kumarila Bhtta for debate --but BHATTA was in his LAST days and directed Acharya Sankara to debate with his disciple sri.Mandan Misra.
