Question:
Im starting to disagree with biblical doctrines,,,?

I am only 16 years old, and before I that I strongly believed the bible to be the only truth. I started to look into the bible even more, and questioned many things(I'm quite inquisitive) (also apostolic Pentecostal) I don't see how people deserve to go to hell. I think that hell is worse then praising Hitler for killing all the Jews. I don't agree with hell because how can finite transgression ever equate to infinite torture? Why did god create so many if he knew that they were going to burn infinity?(I know that we have a choice) I am starting to disagree with everything, but is it really worth giving up what has been taught since I was 2? Am I just being tempted by the devil? I don't understand everything, but I see flaws in a god that has perfect justice? I have nowhere to turn, I feel like my heart is being torn in 2. I don't was to create a large gap in my family, but I don't want to live behind a mask. It seems that my gut is in a constant conflict, as if it knows the answer but doesn't want to grasp the truth. Because the truth will tear the wall I have built. The wall will reveal something that will look monstrous to them, but at the same time, all the monstrous thing wants is to demonstrate that he doesn't want to harm anybody. When the wall is tore down. They still wont understand why I have built the wall.....(I hope you understand) I

Questioning your beliefs is a good thing - that's how you learn. Rejecting all your beliefs because something seems off is not.

E.g., from my reading of the Bible, I have learned that there is no everlasting torture in Hell. Hell is just permanent, and complete death, and, "the dead are nothing." Fire imagery is used in the Bible, meaning that it is permanent, and there is no escape. But, the ancients well knew the destroying, and cleansing effects of fire! So, once you are destroyed, that's it - you are no more, ever. That, to me, is Hell.

There are lots of things like this. Pentecostals are a pretty small part of Christianity, for good reason. Some of their beliefs are questioned by others. What you call a "Bible" doctrine might simply be a denominational interpretation not shared by others at all. Or, there may be good reasons for their thinking. E.g., why would God want anyone to live with Him that doesn't even believe in Him?

There are loads of questions that you can ask, and many good answers. Basically, you need to learn! I wanted to learn, so, I studied and earned a degree in Theology. So, years of asking questions! And, I feel I barely scratched the surface. I am 56, and still learning - you are 16, and just starting to. Good luck; it's a fun ride!

It's normal to start questioning the beliefs you've been brought up with as you grow older. If you feel comfortable, I'd suggest asking your parents or pastor about your questions. If that's not something you're able to do, then maybe ask for book recommendations. I know there are a lot of books out there dealing with exactly what you're questioning. A couple that spring to mind off the top of my head are "The Case For Christ" and "The Case for Faith" by Lee Strobel, and "Hard to Believe" by John MacArthur. Francis Chan also addresses some of these ideas in his books, specifically "Erasing Hell," but I'd also recommend "Crazy Love" and "Forgotten God." If you're more interested in what other religions and worldviews have to say, then "Constructing A Life Philosophy" and some of the other books of essays by the same company might be helpful.

It's also possible that the reason you're having difficulties is because you don't agree with specific doctrines taught by your church. Something to consider is if your parents would be willing to let you switch churches, or attend other church services. Sometimes hearing something from a different perspective, or finding people who believe differently than what you've always been taught can help resolve questions.

Remember, it's okay to question what you're told. It's okay to believe differently than your parents, and even if you decide to leave the faith entirely, that doesn't mean you're a horrible person.

Hi, this is similar to what I went through a few months ago, but I was 17, now I am 18 and am now a practicing Muslim.

I was starting to question life and also if there was something more out there, and I have always believed there is a God, and only one God. Also, some aspects of Christianity make little if any sense, even in context I could never get an explanation for all the contradictions in the Bible. In comparison, the Qur'an and every doctrine of Islam, when understood, makes perfect sense, is logical and I can't deny Islam being the Truth at all.

Yes, Islam is infamous because it is portrayed so badly by so many evil things people do, using Islam as something to hide behind.

But this steps of finding the Truth is not pressing to any particular religion, so just have a look and at least consider trying this out.

1- Find a list of the major religions, the true one is likely to be widespread as many people would receive the message and accept it.

2- Discard any that do not center around a God, or do not claim to be from God, also discard any that either do not accept converts or are unclear on how to convert. The true religion should be easy to convert to.

3- Only include religions that claim to be intended for all people, which are universal.

Now your list is likely to be short, when I did this I came down to Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism and Sikhism. I know that Sikhism is man made because Guru Nanak started it to stop conflict between Hindus and Muslims in Asia.

So that left me with 4. I could not believe in Hinduism at all, so that was the next to go.

Now the 3 Abrahamic religions, all with the same roots: Judaism, Islam and Christianity, were the last 3 for me. Research the remaining religions on your list , how to convert, the beliefs and doctrines of each and if you can, talk to people of the religions.

I would advise against talking about Islam on the R&S section as there are lots of spiteful atheists and Christians who will force Jesus Christ down your throat if they can, so go to Ramadan for that.

Also, keep praying to God, not Jesus, Allah, Elohim, Jehovah etc. just call Him God, for him to show you the truth, I asked for Him to give me a desire for the true religion and was so drawn to Islam and passion for Islam seemed to come out of nowhere.

I understand completely and have some advice that I hope you strongly consider. I applaud your honesty for admitting that you have questions concerning the religion you are being taught. Since you are only 16 and can not legally make your own decisions as far as where you live etc... I would strongly advise keeping your questions secret for now. Research them and even ask your religious leaders for clarification if you think it will help but remember to validate whatever you discover for the truth and don't accept the "god works in mysterious ways" excuse that they want everyone to accept. The bible claims to be perfect so any question you have should also have an answer and anything less is unacceptable from a perfect book.

You have to understand that your parents and other elders did not have the powerful tool of the internet at their disposal when they may have had these same questions so they had to accept the answers they were given regardless to their truth or not. It is not their fault that they have been conditioned over many years to fear questioning their god claim but you have the power and tools at your fingertips to change your beliefs and believe as many true things and as few false things as possible. This is very important because our beliefs drive our actions and if we believe something false only bad actions can follow. Think about it. Hope I have helped.

I am not here to tell you what to believe or if god is or not real. I want to share my experience w/ you. I was raised catholic and started having the same doubts and eventually decided that the lack of prove of his existence along with the contradictions of the core of god inherent values vs what the bible says.

now years later I see the benefit in both believing and not believing. I am legally blind and doctors have told me that I will eventually loose the reminder of my vision. When I believed I was mad at him many, times and then again I felt strong knowing that there could be a better reason for me been this way.

Now that I am an,atheist I don't feel bad about it.. it sucks obviously but I don't feel like there is a lesson for me to learn yet there is no comfort of knowing that someone has my back figuratively speaking.

if I had the chance I would like to know that even when I am not doing so well there is always someone watching over me. Unfortunately beliefs can't be chosen.

Hello there,

You talk like if you don't give up on the bible, it will need you. The bible needs none of us. That's God's own word. He has never needed mankind , We need him and always will if we want to breathe. God looks at sin as an absolutely terrible, horrific thing. We can't see it the way he can. He hates it and he says it in his bible. We do deserve hell and some, but the Lord is a merciful God and he is not talking about burning place with fire. He is talking about a condition. Hell is a condition. When someone unsaved dies they go no where. They don't exist anymore the bible teaches. The bible is a spiritual book and you have to compare scripture with scripture when you read it. We can't just read a verse and leave it there in most cases.

You can do what ever you like , but I tell you that the bible is God's word and he can do what ever he like and he is never wrong. Never.

First of all, God did not create Hell for Human beings to go to. The New Testament states that God created Hell only for Satan and his evil angels to go to. The New Testament also says that God's Will is that no one go to Hell. The situation is that if a person believes the lies of Satan which are stated as the Truth in this day and time and acts on them, a person can go to Hell as a person if they don't follow directions can fall over a cliff. As an example, God didn't create cliffs for people to fall off of and die. Usually in the physical world there are signs and warnings that a cliff is near and encouraging people to be careful so they don't fall off of the cliff. God in the Bible gives us Commandments and teachings that if we follow them will prevent us from going to Hell and instead will lead us to Heaven. No one has to go to Hell and everyone can go to Heaven and that is God's desire.

We are living in a time when no church teaches all of the Bible and no church doctrine is 100% correct. Please read the Bible that is 100% true in the original Hebrew and Greek that it was written in. Some parts of some English translations are good but some are far from the Truth. I use the website where it is easy to go back to the original language the Bible was written in and also find out what the meanings of the original Hebrew and Greek words that the Bible was written in. If you try to understand all of any churches doctrines and teachings you will never see the truth. It is only by reading the entire Bible and looking up the meanings of the words in the original textsthat you will come to know the truth.

Look, becoming an atheist is nothing to be ashamed of, and no one should feel they'd be looked down upon because of this. Also, just because you have been taught it from an early age doesn't make it any more true than if you hadn't heard about religion until last week. You should let yourself work out for yourself whether you will continue to believe in God or not. There are flaws in religion, but you'll make up your mind in time, and I feel that atheists tend to be more open-minded so can go further (plus lie-ins on Sunday mornings), and with more and more people becoming atheist and doubting religion (which seems to have done more harm than good, with the Crusades, 9/11, Islamic State and the Partition of India being driven by religion), I, frankly, don't really see the point in it. Make up your mind for yourself, and if anyone - friend, family, anyone - thinks less of you for doubting your religion, they clearly don't really respect you that much, do they? Choose wisely, and follow your brain.

Rather than this credit the Bible, why do not research it to get a better

understanding of it. If hell is a place that burn up people and is for sinner only notice what the Bible teach:King James Version Ac 2:31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. if hell was a place for sinner why did Jesus go when he was killed. The reason is hell or hade is mankind common grave. If hell was a place that burn with fire and sulphur then fire could not destroy it. Notice what the Bible teach will happen to hell.

King James Version Re 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. Some thing in the Bible are symbol. Death can not be destroy by fire. It is a condition. But since fire destroywhatever it touches the scripture mean that death and hell(the grave) will be gone forever. King James Version Re 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. It is not the Bible you have problems with. It is all the false religions claiming to represent it.

Here is an example: Ephesians 4:5-6, tells us there is only, "one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all [persons], who is over all and through all and in all." According to Pew Polling, there are over 60,000 religions just in the US who all "claim" to be Christian. Absolutely, they are not true Christians, who obey the Bible directions.

In your case, the dead are never tortured. The Bible shows that is impossible. Open your Bible to both Ecclesiastes 9:5, 10 and Psalms 146:4. There you find at death, all abilities, thoughts, actions and knowledge ends. Without the ability to think and feel, there IS NO PAIN possible.

Even the possibility of a fiery burning Hell is impossible. Jeremiah 7:31 and several other instances in the following chapters, show some in Israel worshiping idols and sacrificing babies by fire. "a thing that I had not commanded and that had not come up into my heart.’"

False religions never care about Biblical accuracy. They get most of their doctrines stolen from pagans. From pagan beliefs the people once held. Until so-called "Christian" armies conquered them and forced them to say they became Christians. To make it easier, they stole some pagan beliefs, mashed them up and relabeled them with Biblical names.

First, check any beliefs with the Bible. That will show the vast majority of lying that goes on. Use a good Concordance which matches your translation you are using. Look up the key words which will give the Bible's view of any subject. While it will by no means equal the value of a proper Bible study, it will assist you in separating fact from fiction.

I know many people are going to hate on me for posting this; however, i don't think it is necessary to become atheist and it is good to question you're beliefs. What is better is looking through the bible for yourself and seeing what it actually says. Genesis 3:19 “Dust you are and to dust you will return.” Ecclesiastes 9: 10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do with all your might, for there is no work nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom in the Grave, where you are going. “His spirit goes out, he returns to the ground; on that very day his thoughts perish.”—Psalm 146:4.

Not every religion believes that there is hell or purgatory. Using the bible as a reference most scriptures do not point to hell as literal (otherwise it would contradict with other scriptures such as those listed above). Rather, it points out that when people die they turn to their original form as dust and as you probably can gather dust is conscious of nothing.

If you're truly interested start looking up things on you're on and look for reliable sources don't go to Hell&Demons4ever.org (no idea if that's a real site but it wouldn't surprise me... don't give up... you gotta work at it... go and crack open that bible of yours see if you can find the truth... I personally suggest using an older form of the bible such as the king james (or something) because a lot of newer bibles have been altered).

It is very good that you are questioning what you are learning. It is important to understand what the Bible actually says. The bible encourages you to keep testing your faith 2 Corinthians 13:5 and make the truth found in the Bible your own. Your mind is already telling you that what you are hearing is not making sense. If God s principle quality is love - 1 John 4:8 It would not make sense for a loving God to torture people in hell. But bad people would need to be dealt with in a just manner. Here is a link to an article that goes into answers directly from the bible, not based on doctrine. Perhaps after reading the referenced scriptures you might feel more confident in the bible. http://www.jw.org/finder?locale=en&docid=502013345&prefer=lang&srcid=sharer

I'm not sure whether I can understand all your feelings because I wasn't raised in any religion. Both of my parents are strict atheist but they are very liberal and I turned out to be an agnostic, and I consider myself to be a very spiritual person.

I think some doubts at your age are completely normal and even positive. And I believe that the Bible shouldn't be interpretated literally. You should read it and see for yourself how you understand certain things written in it - because I think a lot of things should be understood as symbolic. Perhaps read some other religious texts like Quran, and compare them to Bible. You'll find out a lot of things are similar.

This doesn't mean you should turn away from your faith. Perhaps you will in time, but you should take things slowly. I believe your feelings towards your faith will become very clear when you're an adult. You should spent these confusing teenage years looking for yourself. There's nothing wrong with doubting.

You are not alone in how you feel. Many people have lost faith due to the teachings of the hellfire doctrine. However, you may be surprised to learn that the bible actually does NOT teach that bad people will burn forever in hell. Notice how the article copied below explains the truth behind the bible's use of the term hell:

Some Bible translations use the word “hell” for the Hebrew word “Sheol” and the matching Greek word “Hades,” both of which refer to the common grave of mankind. (Psalm 16:10; Acts 2:27) Many people believe in a fiery hell. However, the Bible teaches otherwise.

Those in hell are unconscious and so cannot feel pain. “There is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in Sheol.”—Ecclesiastes 9:10.

Good people go to hell. The faithful men Jacob and Job expected to go there.—Genesis 37:35; Job 14:13.

Death, not torment in a fiery hell, is the penalty for sin. “He who has died has been acquitted from his sin.”—Romans 6:7.

Eternal torment would violate God’s justice. (Deuteronomy 32:4) When the first man, Adam, sinned, God told him that his punishment would simply be to pass out of existence: “Dust you are and to dust you will return.” (Genesis 3:19) God would have been lying if he were actually sending Adam to a fiery hell.

God does not even contemplate eternal torment. The idea that he would punish people in hellfire is contrary to the Bible’s teaching that “God is love.”—1 John 4:8; Jeremiah 7:31.

Hi

You have stated some very good points. You were bought up in a Christian household which is fine.

However you have started to question what you have been told which can only be a good thing. I personally like all religions that I have researched to some degree. But I also believe that Religion can be used for evil purposes.

But putting my opinion aside I am only stating my perspective yours will be different. I have no experience of God. Therefore my belief is, is there a God and if so how do I find him. "The Bible states that the Kingdom of heaven is within you" Also "In the beginning was the word and the word is with God". Other scriptures like The Guru Granth Sahib from Sikhism state In the beginning was the Sound, The primordial sound". Also "God is everywhere" Now for me I personally want to connect with the infinite and am finding certain techniques that will enable me to do this. I have done lots and lots of research from Religion to meditation to Yoga. I believe personally although again I have no direct experience that Religion is not required for spiritual upliftment. Yes the 10 commandments can make you a better person in society no doubt.

But how can arguing one path is better than another make someone a better person. I here about this sometimes in society when a Muslim will say Islam is the best Religion and a Sikh will say we have the highest path to God etc etc.

Now for me I am doing meditation, yoga and little bit of religion. I am finding out what techniques work for me personally.

My peers know about this and accept this. However yours may not. This can be difficult for you and your family but remember your truth is your personal truth not your family's or anyone else's. Purely yours. I was raised a Sikh and no longer identify myself as a Sikh I am just a human being with infinite potential just like you. I find Religion can create many barriers in life.

For example The Catholic Church did not allow non Catholics to marry in Church. Is this morally write? I don't think so. If there is a God and God is love how can this be. No rules should be imposed on any humans. We should have human rights and be open with these rights.

To sum up I have basically given you my perspective because I started questioning and was not sure around 17 years old.

Please don't take offence in anything I say because its just my opinion. I hope you find my answer helpful

Take Care and all the best......

The problem seems to be that you are confusing belief in the bible with belief in God. If you were brought up to believe that the bible was a perfect book, then you woulod think that, but it isn't. There are glaring inconsistencies. for example, the first two chapters of Genesis, written by the same man, gives some different days for the creation of the same things.

It is a book that can be read at different levels according to your level of conscience and, at 16, that is not yet fully developed - often it continues to develop for most of your life. All you have to do is keep believing in God and hold him in your heart. If you do that, it doesn't matter what the doctrine says. its not your problem, so please don't make it one.

The sinner in this world is like a passenger on a stricken ship about to sink. Wise ones will have planned for this to happen, unwise ones will not. So the question is: What to do when it happens?

When their earthly ship sinks the Jesus lifeboat will come alongside to take them to Heaven where life will be perfect. There is only a single lifeboat but they won’t get into it, as they believe he is a false god and gives a false doctrine. So they will prefer to stay in the water, and watch the lifeboat sail to safety hoping that Satan will come along and rescue them, but that is being presumptuous. They won’t be in the water for long, and even if Satan had a lifeboat he would not come and save them. Why should he? If he waits long enough they will drown and go to Hell anyway, saving Satan the trouble of going for them. I know which of the two destinations I prefer. It's their decision to drown or be saved. God will not make the decision for them – they will have to do it, but is it wise for them to leave it to the last minute? Wouldn't it be better for them to accept they were wrong and get into the Jesus lifeboat before they end up in the water? After all, their ship could be sunk by morning, and they will find themselves with Satan in the everlasting torment of Hell. God does not send them to Hell, they go there because it's their decision not to believe in Christ.

1. You're right, there is no justifiable eternal torture for any finite crime. There can be permanent consequences to things, such as a drunk driving turning someone into a paraplegic or something like that, but there is no justice in infinite punishment.

2. You're right again. If the Judeo-Christian god is real, he most definitely knew who would be saved and who would not before he created them. If our lives are but a blink of the eye in the scheme of eternity, I cannot find any good purpose for the lives of the hellbound.

3. You could be deceived by the devil. I went through this line of thinking for awhile. Eventually, I made my choice based on what did and did not sit right with me.

4. You are justified in worrying that turning atheist can rip your family apart. Many Christians throw all those teachings to be compassionate right out the window when their kids turn atheist.

You didn't really resolve this into a final question, but if you want advice: Be the atheist you want to be. I could not accept a religion that asks me to turn my brain off when I find contradictions. I felt all the verses telling me to do that were cop-outs ("Lean not on your own understanding," etc). You're 16, and you've been hearing about god since you were 2. If you had never heard about god until you turned 16, would you believe it was true?

Congratulations, you're starting to think about morality for yourself and you're starting to see that the fundamentalist approach has some problems! I commend you.

Think about this: imagine you had a grown daughter that rejected you for some reason (perhaps based on false information). Of course you'd be heartbroken, but I bet you wouldn't give her a deadline, telling her that unless she changed her mind in a month she'd be sorry, and then when she didn't you abduct her and torture her in your basement. Now imagine that you had the power to extend the torture session for all eternity, would you do it? What if she begged and pleaded with you to stop, would you feel like a "good" person if you just kept right on torturing her? Telling her "you had your chance, but now it's too late!" I bet you wouldn't, and that makes you WAY more moral than the God that many fundamentalists would have you believe in.

Take a look at this brief video (under 2 minutes) from an ex-fundamentalist preacher on this same subject:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3E0Bqa97tUI

Or this brief humorous video (under 3 minutes):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaJgLBoB_Pw

And if you want a bit more on the philosophy of it, take a look here (a bit longer, but not bad):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAWgNk4LjWA&list=PL6M9lJ0vrA7G8-No--9MAdNgJmAGiIXjh

The typical fundamentalist (here Matt Slick at CARM.org) says hell is definitely eternal (showing the moral bankruptcy that the literal interpretation of the Bible can lead you to):

At 16 I disagreed w/ just about everything so your not alone...for example, I decided to read the Book from the very beginning to end, when I came to a section that girls were made pregnant by their father, I used it as a good " excuse " to quit...keep an open mind and learn all you can, it is the Word of God and does not decieve...( ask the Holy Spirit for understanding each time before you start )

Some popular religious doctrines are not Biblical, but man made. Godis real, his love is real, and we must read the Bible for ourselves with some understanding of the earliest manuscripts to understand its message.

Many atheists point to the confusing doctrines that came from humans as the reason why they do not believe in God. But God is not a God of confusion, but of peace. To get the peace of God one must find out what he says, not what humans say.

Eternal torture in Hellfire is not a Biblical doctrine, but a way in which many religious people present God. There are a lot of things that churches and religions teach that are incompatible with the Bible's message. Atheism or faithlessness is not the answer, searching and finding the truth of God's message is.

My suggestion is to have a Bible study. Here is the way to do it.

Calm down. There is no such thing as Hell. If you think about it, it doesn't make much sense. Isn't hell a place where the Devil himself burns people? Why would God a God of love [1 John 4:8 says: “God is love”] send his creations to punish them and send them to the Devil, a enemy of God? But the Bible says there is a penalty for sin. Romans 6:23 says: “The wages sin pays is death” and of course every human sins and every human dies. There is no Hell. that is a far too cruel punishment for a perfect loving God and father.

If you have any other questions you have about a Bible scripture or something teached in the Bible i can help:) just ask me it in the comments area of this question. :]

Before I give you my opinion please have you actually ever read the bible I am not trying to be condersending but many people base their belief on what some one else told them or some minister I went to a Methodist school when I was school age we learn that Jesus love us so much he died for us John 3 16 but if we steal a small piece of chalk that the teacher usaly throw in the garbage GOD will keep us alive while he sardistically burn us day and night forever Excuse me if I do not see any love in that It was only when I got curious wanted to find the context in which what the pastor was telling us was written because context determine the right or wrong my mother used the example of Cain kill his brother Abel and Jesus telling his deciples to go therefore and do likewise this was two different occasions so they were never meant to be read together so then I realise God told Adam In the day you eat you die Never mention anything about going to hell Then in the new testament it says The wages sin pays is DEATH not hell then to make matters worse they told us hell is under the ground well the apostalic creed state I believe in god almighty and in Jesus Christ his son who was crucified died and buried and desended into hell and on the third day he raised again from THE DEAD not from hell then in the old testament I think it is in Eccliastis 9 ; 5 it says All that your hands find to do, do it because there is no work or anything in the grave WHERE you are going It further add in Ezekial 18 4 the soul that sin dies (i might have those scriptures mixed up but ) no where did it talk about souls in hell as a matter of fact genesis 2 7 says man became a living soul no where did it ever says that god gave man a soul So I ask again Do you read the bible for yourself or believe what some minister tell you?

The sinful heart always imagines flaws and contradictions in order to justiify itself and excuse itself.

The essence of sin is to deny itself, blame others and at the very least minimise itself. The two most prominent characteristics of sinners is pride and self justificatuion. What you write displays both.

You know you are a sinner and your moral awareness alone teaches you of a judgement for sin.

God's will is for all to be saved and He has provided a salvation from sin.

Obviously sin will be burnt in the presence of the Most Holy and most Pure.

Furthermore what you write shows a woeful failure of reason.

The sinful heart forbids the mind that which condemns. If the mind is so bound by the sinful heart how stupid is it to imagine you know better? But you do know you are sinful.

Therefore God commands repentance.

I can relate to part of what you are saying but don't give up on the Bible being God's truth. At age ten I started to sense a presence that I soon recognized as the Holy Spirit convicting me that I was a sinner in need of a savior and that savior was Jesus Christ. For the next four years I resisted because I had some sins that I didn't want to give up but over time the conviction became so severe that I became depressed. During this time I did lot's of thinking and praying and had come to realize that in order to be saved I had to turn from my sins (Repent) and by faith commit to the Lordship of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. By now I was so depressed that I bowed before God, Repented and surrendered my life to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. That was the best decision of my life and I have never been depressed again. You say you see flaws in God's actions. God's standards never change. He is perfect. If He gave you life, and He did He also gives you and everyone else a perfect plan of Salvation so that if anyone goes to hell it's because they rejected Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. If you want to relieve yourself of this turmoil you are in stop trying to run ahead of God and simply repent of your sins, and by faith trust Jesus Christ to Save you. If you do this you have God's promise that you are eternally Saved and God will never let you go. God bless.

It seems your views are very strong in regards to what you've been told about hell. Fortunately, the Bible does NOT teach that evil people will be in a fiery state of torment after death. How so? Examine the following:

'Hell' in the Bible is translated from the words 'Sheol' or 'Hades', and both refer to the common grave of mankind and animals. Everyone goes there after they die, and such an experience is also known as 'returning to dust'. (Eccl.3:19 & 20) Adam was given that sentence for his disobedience in the beginning when he sinned. (Gen.3:19) While in the grave, no one feels or knows anything. They simply cease to exist. (Eccl.9:5 & 6) Jesus at one time likened being dead to being asleep. (John 11:11-14)

As for the 'lake of fire' mentioned in Revelation, some feel that is the place where people will be tormented forever along with the Devil and all that follow him. (Rev.20:10) However, this is merely symbolic language for everlasting destruction. We know this because also being 'thrown' into the lake of fire is death and 'Hades', or the grave. (Rev.20:14) We know it's impossible to throw a state of being such as death anywhere, as well as the concept of the grave, since a grave can be anywhere a person or animal is buried.

.

John, I appears to me that you do not know what the hell, HELL really is -

Hell is NOT a place of infinite torture - hell is merely your GRAVE and a holding place before you are resurrected to face your judgment.

If you DIE with unrepented & unforgiven sins, God will judge you and find you guilty and you will be consigned to the Lake of Fire to suffer the Second Death (this is what I believe the Bible teaches). NO ONE burns forever.

So, you are greater than your Creator God ??? (I don't think so).

It is not your "gut" that's in conflict, Satan has confused your brain.

And Satan caused that 'wall' to be built -

Jesus is your ONLY defence against his corrupt wiles -

Believe me John I was there 60 years ago when I was a teen like you.

I got away from what I thought was a very oppressive environment

by joining the armed services in the 50s, and regretted it ever since.

John I understand your deli ma. You are torn between family tradition, And one you have not considered accurate understanding of the Bible. You cite the hell doctrine of torment as an accurate understanding of the word hell (Hebrew- Sheol,Greek - Hades) but reasoning on what the scriptures says will help you see the wisdom of true Bible teaching.

For example compare the living Bible and the King James version at Proverbs 27:20 the King James translate the original word for l(Sheol) as hell. The Living Bible translates it as death. New world translation- grave. in the 2 instances it is use to describe a state of inactivity.

This harmonizes with the sentence God pronounce on Adam and Eve it is quoted world wide from dust you are and dust you will return Genesis 3:19

The Bible foretold Jesus death. At death a Bible writer was inspired to write Jesus being in hell (Hades original word translated hell) 3 days was resurrected to life.Acts 2:31 to resurrect means to bring back to life. Jesus was dead 3 days in hell the grave ,dead, state of inactivity. Hell can only mean what the Bible indicates the grave

As you study the Bible more you will find it quite comforting. and you will know that a God of love does not torment people for-ever.

the Bible is not a book of cans and can not's what doctrines do you disagree with For Jesus came and fulfilled the law and gave us two great commandments 1) Love thy Lord God with all thy heart soul and mind and 2) love thy neighbor as thy self if we do this we keep the ten commandants automatically it is ok to have questions and even doubts but you do not need a wall Scripture tells us that God is love and there is no fear in love it seems pretty simple to me for the opposite is hate and anger and mistreating your fellow man now there is some doctrines to disagree with Amen?

Right on, man. Just know that it's not like you only have two options. You can be a non-Christian and still believe in and have a personal relationship with God. Or you can become a Buddhist, Pagan, Atheist, or a Jew, etc. Make sure you think your beliefs through carefully.
?

Here is the truth: Hell is simply a place of inactivity (Ecclesiastes 9:5, 10). No one can be tormented forever as the Bible shows us that pain is to be done away with (Revelation 21:3, 4). People would have you believe that Revelation 21:3, 4 is referring to only good people. But did your know that God is in pain due to our sins (Psalms 78:41). So sin causes Jehovah pain. Torture is sin, would you not agree? So, if people were to be tortured, God would be tortured. Do you really believe that God would do that to himself? Do you really think that, when pain is done away with, that people will still be paining God due to the torture? The scripture plainly states that pain will be done away with. Not that it will be done away with only for the good people. The Bible is true (John 17:17; 2 Timothy 3:16, 17). Do not think the Bible is at fault. Know that it is false religion that is at fault.

It's good that you question what appears to be a document that is flawed. There are too many conflicts in that document, too many laws that no one on the planet seems to hold onto regardless. Every Christian differs from his fellow Christian in his belief. Man has been through many religions, they come and go, whether they were established by God or not is irrelevant after thousands of years, we need to realize that what was taught millennia ago, could be irrelevant today. Choose to be God centered instead of religion centered.

Any valid doctrine should welcome disagreement. It should welcome examination and dissection because, at its root, it remains both consistent and understandable.

A simple examination of Hell is a good place to start. Obviously, a human equivalent would be prisons which, I think anyone agrees, should not all be completely torn down. Do places of punishment, at their core function, deserve to exist. If the answer is yes, then continue.

Now, does Hell necessarily equate with Eternity? Beyond the fact that most people stop counting after reaching the number 10, it must be said that very few people are going to be sitting on the side-lines of Hell making sure the people who were sentenced there actually remain there. Saying you are going to send someone to Eternity is one thing, actually doing the thing is something else altogether. However, using the word Eternity, however incorrect, actually would encompass any length of time that would be commiserate with whatever crime the person was being punished for. Again, are you going to sit on the sidelines of Eternity to double-check what someone says is happening? I'm pretty sure if you are in Heaven, your primary thought isn't going to be "I wonder what Adolph Hitler is doing right now." Do you think of children starving when you are at Disneyland...I don't think so.

Again, people tend to make broad statements about things they actually tend to not spend too much time thinking about, simply assuming whatever is said is true (which isn't the same as actually being true *cough heliocentric view of the solar system cough*)

And to further muddy the water, lets talk about 'eternity' for a second. Ever smashed your thumb inbetween a door and its frame? That pain doesn't last forever but boy when it's hurting, you actually aren't being entirely rational and counting the seconds to make sure of it either. Again, Hell doesn't have to actually last for Eternity in order for its effect to, Post Hell Stress Disorder anyone? But because religion is as much about creating strong images in order to maximize social pressure, oftentimes its meaning becomes Michael Bay-ed in terms of acting up the drama effect.

As for 'perfect' justice, that is actually a oxymoron. The very notion of justice being needed in the first place (to correct a wrong) means however perfect it is in rectifying a wrong doesn't mean wrongs can't happen in the first place. The perfect response to smacking your little brother is not the same as you never smacking your little brother. So the very notion of creating 'perfect' justice really acknowledges that bad things are going to happen from the get-go.

None of this means that the Bible doesn't have value or doesn't contain good and true things within it. It just means because it is understanding filtered through humanity, it has a flawed human understanding flowing entirely through it. Think of it like building a car. If you build a car, you anticipate its going to crash. However, if you don't build a car, people will never have the positive experience of driving down the road with the top down blaring music and having a wonderful time. The universe builds the car and accepts the crashes that will occur.

And if there are other things you don't understand, don't forget no one learns everything at once. Some answers you can only discover when you are ready, when you start looking for them. Don't forget that the truths you find pleasant and the truths you find disturbing are, in the end, still truths, both of which you might need to understand something you don't.

Quite simple John: Hell is NOT Eternal! it is to be thrown into the lake of fire when it has completed it purpose, the huge Lie that Hell does Not exist is tempting for many to accept, and to make Hell seem more heinous and more unnaceptable to believe it has been made out to be Eternal, which begs your question!

Hell is where those that refused to take in Gods warnings and Truths, and chose to live life for themselves and their pleasure above Gods laws! in Hell they cannot ignore or preoccupy themselves with distractions and pleasures, it is the Classroom of Last Chance! for many! and for some others at a different level it is an Holding place for those destined for the Lake of Fire, and there are Many many levels, people whom were often very excellent and good persons shall also have to go there! till such time as they repent of their dissing Almighty God and his ways! right down to the disgusting wretches that hurt and harm for pleasure and the likes, Enoch whom should never have been excluded from the Bible Canon explains Hell and its purpose, although Hell exists in the realm of Eternity it is Not itself Eternal, Just as our Spirits were made in the realm of eternity but we were plucked out from there, Unfortunate people who have experienced their own Hell and do not diss Almighty God, though they do Not Praise him may gain Salvation through Judgement, those that knew better and put their following on hold for their own ways and will shall have to learn the hard way, those that would Not listen and heed shall have to feel to know!.

I'm sure you have heard of "Scared Straight" by taking kids to penetentiaries to see what goes on there. GOD came up with the idea first. In the Millennium when Christ returns and the devil is chained in the bottomless pit here is how it is done.

Isa 66:23 And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.

Isa 66:24 And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.

There will be portals into hell where those who suffer there can be observed. One will be in the ancient city of Babylon. There are other locations as well.

So, you are 16 and you disagree with bible doctrine. Do you disagree with the part that says that Jesus went through torture and hell to pay for your sins, so you wouldn't have to? Do you disagree with the part where it says, that whosoever believes on him will be saved from going to an eternal hell? Where it says that God desires that all would come to repentance? Have you taken the time to think of what sends people to hell? It is the fact that the only thing that will send people to hell is

their refusal to accept what Jesus has already done on their behalf.

Neither God, Jesus, nor the bible is out to send people to hell but to

save them from hell. The bible is your spiritual portfolio, to help you

prepare for your eternal retirement. Jesus has already finished it for

each and every person. It is up to them if they accept it or not.

First off what you have have been looking at religion that is full of paganism, the Bible calls false religion the mother of harlots(prostitutes-Rev 17th & 18th chapters)! You can also read 2 Timothy 4:3-4, one false teaching is hell fire, we do not have a soul that leaves the body when we die, when we die we are a dead soul! (Ezekiel 18:4)

Christmas is a pagan festival to the sun god whose symbol is the cross, Easter is the pagan goddess of fertility whose symbol is the rabbit.

The Christian religions today have been infiltrated and adulterated with paganism.

Before you shut the door on the Bible why don't you find out what it really teaches.

Download free of charge "What Does the Bible Really Teach?" at jw.org

Too many are turning to atheism and evolution because of false religion, it's sad that what is known as the Christian beliefs of today are turning people away because they are teaching false doctrines!

Trinity,Idol worship, hell fire and immortal soul are all false teachings that are easily shown to be incorrect with someone that really knows what the Bible teaches, don't look for Christendom's clergy for truths, look to God's word, the Bible!

I simply would like to say this, do not get your answers from others who are telling you what is what. Many have doctrines ingrained in their minds to that point where they may seem 99% right and infact you will feel 99% right about it, but I encourage you to ask questions, if you feel some things are falsely written then believe it, if not then don't believe it. (Whatever your preference in learning)

For me, when I read the bible. I ask my self 2 things. Is God in these verses? (God is love) If he is not, then i disregard the verses.

Scripture...the Bible...does not state that there is ongoing punishment after death...so it is a false teaching...and WHO is against scripture???

It is Satan.

(Ecclesiastes 9:5, 6) For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing at all, nor do they have any more reward, because all memory of them is forgotten. 6 Also, their love and their hate and their jealousy have already perished, and they no longer have any share in what is done under the sun.

(Ecclesiastes 9:10) Whatever your hand finds to do, do with all your might, for there is no work nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom in the Grave, where you are going.

For punishment to work, you must be conscious...the dead are not.

The problem with us is that we are inclined to think that God should meet our expectation, not us meeting the expectation of God. So, we are confused who is the Creator and who is the creature. Thinking that "eternal hell", assuming that it is eternal, is too much for anyone is like assuming that we know better than God in assessing the impact of what Satan did to all living being. Do you think it is fair for God to accept Satan in heaven after all that he did to our lives? Our senses cannot even comprehend how great is the universe that we are in, or know the origin of the forces that make up the atomic universe. All we can do is describe and label them. No one on earth is in the position to question the judgment of God. Doing so is too much self-assumption.

I am not telling you to trust everything that is in the English Bibles of today, because the Bible itself admits its errors and incompleteness. You have barely touched the surface of scriptural message. A humble and sincere heart is the secret to understanding the underlying message.

I felt alone when I went through that myself at 16. I believed the same as you did about those flaws in God. The reality is that you have accepted your parents beliefs and are now looking into what you believe for yourself. I was required to attend their church until I was 18 years old and could afford to not live in their home. So, I planned to leave, and focused away from religion or discussions of the Gospel. I hope that your parents LOVE YOU at least as much as they love their church! Mine did and we had a great relationship, and I was able to remain the favorite of my mom! (8 bros & sis)

The bible does not teach that people burn in hellfire. Romans 6: 23 says that the price to pay for our sins is death, it does not say the price is to burn. If we pay for our sins at death then there is no need for us to be burned alive forever. Jehovah told Adam and Eve there punishment for disobedience and he told them in genesis 3: 19 that they would return back to the ground because that's where they came from, dust they were and dust they would return. Jehovah never once said that they would burn in hell once they disobeyed him, it was clear that once they died and returned back to the ground they would cease to exist just like before they were created. Same goes for us, we are dust so when we die we will return back to the dust and cease to exist (psalms 146: 4; Ecclesiastes 3: 20; Ecclesiastes 9: 5)

There is absolutely no way a person can honestly believe a single word of today's bible to be credible, if you knew even a tiny bit about the history of the bible. I guarantee that if you watch this bible expert/scholar 10 minute video, you will without a doubt, never waste your time even trying to read it again. If that's not the case, then you are simply in shock or denial if you don't feel that way after watching even the first three minutes of this video about how horribly tampered the book is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUek0aXdDMI

Keep asking the hard questions. Ask yourself, ask pastors from churches you don't attend (this will avoid conflict with your family and connections in your main church), also be sure to ask these questions to scientists. For a more dramatic perspective, speak with Atheists, Agnostics, and Non-religious people. Study and learn more about evolutionary theory, climate change, biology, Ethics, space, and Astronomy.

I was in the same boat as you around your age. My grandpa, father, and uncle all Pentecostal preachers at one point in their life. I can honestly say that I am a much happier person now that I'm out of the church. The concept of the hell doctrine as well as the general intolerance in the bible as well as the "general" intolerance of others practiced by christians around me has made me wan't no part in it.

Don't get me wrong Christ was extremely tolerant according to the bible, but the bible as a whole does not teach as much.

Hey im going to keep this short. No one is sent to hell. It was not even meant for people. Yes it is a real place and you really do 'burn' forever. But thats a choice you make. The whole point of being 'saved' is so that at the end of your life you don't have to go tho hell. People walk themselves into hell God does not torture anyone. hes standing right there all your life giving you a choice. If you dont take it that's not at all His fault.

I believe questioning all you have been indoctrinated with from birth is a VITAL part of developing your relationship with Christ. Prayerfully seek the Truth and you will find it, this is Gods promise. I was in your shoes 15 years ago. I didn't want to go though motions and I didn't want worship to just be a ritual of daily life with no meaning to please my mom. Seeking revealed to me that religion is about What you need to get by, while relationship is about What more can I do? You will discover that God loves us perfectly, not for what we do but for what He did. He paid our debt for sins we committed, are committing and will commit. I discovered GRACE is unique to Christianity. You can't be good enough for heaven or bad enough for hell. You can choose to accept God's gift or choose to be apart from God. God honors your choice. When time here is over, there is only ONE place that will exist apart from God and it was made for Satan and his demons.

Looks like you have a lot to read here. We have free will; God doesn't create anyone to go to hell. You need to think about living in this world in the mean time. Having a girl friend, getting a job, paying your bills, etc. Just continue to think about God while you are going through your life. It's not functional to obsess on it.

You are being deceived. So hitler got away with it in your imagining? That's it then he 'went to sleep"? I mean when you really take a look at the level of evil out there it's mind-boggling. Further keep in mind they only pretend to be like you and care. Read the parable of the sower. They love evil. It sounds like you are starving for the Word of God. Get a kjversion Bible and believe. I am also pentecostal. Do you have the Holy Ghost? Jesus says that the Spirit will lead us into all truth. Pray on it and ask Jesus to help guide you. You know in your heart what is right, and don't let the world, the devil or your carnal flesh drag you away from the truth. Get back to the cross! Ask Jesus to give you understanding. His word verifies He will give us understanding, if we ask.

I've served the Lord for a short period of time - about 10 years. In that 10 years, I've blown it over and over and over and over.....but God's grace and mercy and word and promise are eternal. How does a person end up in hell? It's simple: they decide to go there. I've messed up and sinned so many times, but I come back to that cross, ask Jesus to wash me and He is faithful to start me over again.

Truly? A person ends up in hell because they WANT to go to hell. Nobody ends up there by accident.
Hal

It turns out those doctrines are *not* biblical.

For instance, the doctrine that hell is actually an infinite duration punishment is *incompatible* with many verses in the Bible. What's eternal? The "lake of fire" -- death, dying. That's an eternal reality. The end of it is the "second death". Those that refuse His offer simply "perish" (they simply die.....).

Many Christians -- many, not a few -- don't subscribe to these various false doctrines that you rightly object to.

Try to choose the best possible answer that you won't regret, to believe or to not. Remember that we ask question but we never did really dream of it much, the more you wonder and ask, the more critical is the question. So you're not going to believe or the answer will be hard on you to made choice. Answer are getting away. One way, you should build your trust on Him back. You do not want to believe in hell, but why would God want wicked, evil, hateful people in His heaven. There is no place in Heaven for sin. God is Holy and we will become Holy like Jesus also. God created you because He wanted children. Children who would love and obey Him. God also created both good and evil, because you cannot know one without the other. God created good pots and bad pots, because He is the Potter and we are the clay. God can harden a heart at any moment to fulfill His plan and God has a plan. Revelation 4:11 KJV says that we were created for God's pleasure, not our pleasure, God's pleasure. It pleased God to create us and it pleases God to see us obeying Him and accepting Jesus who was God in human flesh who came down to win back eternal life for us that Satan, Adam and Eve lost for us in the Garden. When we accept Jesus, He takes our sin and gives us His righteousness. We could not keep the Ten Commandments even when the sacrifice was the blood of cute goats, bulls and lambs. Hell was created for Satan and his fallen angels and their offspring that came from the union of the fallen angel and the human woman. These giants whose bones are scattered all over the world. Their spirits are the demonic in the world today.

If you will resist Satan, he will flee from you. God is The Judge of His Creation and sin will be punished whether you agree or not. The Blood of Jesus was not shed for mankind to continue in sin, wickedness, evil and disobedience.

When Christ returns Matthew 13:41,42 KJV "the Son of man shall send forth His angels and they shall gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity, And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth."

Jesus said the wailing and gnashing of teeth.

HELLO THERE,

You have some good concerns with doctrines that are far from the true teachings of the Bible!

Concerning the hellfire teachings--There is no teaching , idea etc. that supports hellfire! Note please what Jehovah God stated about the very idea of hellfire:

(Jeremiah 32:35) “35 Furthermore, they built the high places of Ba′al in the Valley of the Son of Hin′nom, in order to make their sons and their daughters pass through the fire to Mo′lech, something that I had not commanded them and that had never come into my heart to do such a detestable thing, causing Judah to sin.’”

Please keep in mind the children were alive when the apostate nation left God. Jehovah God --Never was God a Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde--Nor will ever be!

God does not send anybody to hell, and you shouldn't think of it as punishment in the sense of a judge sending somebody to jail. It's not like that at all.

God is the ultimate source of all joy and happiness. He has nothing to give you except Himself. He can reach out his hands and offer you everything He is and everything He has, but he won't force you to accept it if you don't want to. He can plead with you, he can even give up his life and die to try to save you, but again, if you refuse, what do you expect Him to do?

Hell is a description of what being without Him is LIKE. It's pain, torture, loneliness, outer darkness where there's only weeping and gnashing of teeth. If you won't eat the only food in the universe, then you will have to starve. If you won't accept the only joy in the universe, then you will be miserable. God tells you all of this, He hides nothing from you. He lays the choice in front of you and does everything He can to convince you to choose light and life. But He won't force you.

Faith comes by hearing and hearing the Word of God. The doubts could be coming from the lack of reading & studying God's Word. Find a good bible study group and go with your questions & seek answers from God's Word. Google bible verses on what topic you want to know more about. (EX. bible verses on heaven or hell) Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life no man comes to the Father but by Me." Either He is a liar, a lunatic, or LORD! Pray that this helps you

you wouldn't be the first one. i started doing that when i was in the catholic church as a child. i was wondering why the first commandment is not to worship false gods and they had all these statues everywhere. that's where the excuses started and every church i went to after that, mostly conservative fundamental evangelical ones, just kept making me wonder where the love of God was in all this. it was oprah and wayne dyer who got me thinking that maybe the "sin" was to call myself a sinner. now, i don't even believe in sin at all, imho, it is a construct of the folks who decided they needed a way to control us, so they invented sin and hell etc etc. if jesus did indeed exist, he came to teach us love and forgiveness, neither of which most modern-day christian churches focus on. that happens to all religions, tho, so, oh, well, but, now, let's not continue to listen to the distorted and misinterpreted hate speech of the modern christian separatist, let's listen to the love in our hearts that starts with loving ourselves as we are and spreads to everyone around us. what a wonderful world this would be.

You're questioning what you've been told. At sixteen, that's completely normal and natural. What you're feeling is the inconsistency between what you've taught is absolute and unquestionable truth, and what you can see with your own eyes. The Christian view of the world doesn't fit reality unless you twist it and ignore inconvenient truths.

All religions go through reformation split into groups who change doctrine , this happens because of people like you , just believe in goodness , interact with goodness , increase goodness , more goodness less fear , less fear more goodness ,new doctrine should always move in this direction it is never easy.

Dear Friend,

Perhaps I can help. Let us first understand that Adam and Eve were 'perfect.' They were created in God's image (body, soul and spirit) and they were created in His 'image" with His likeness/character. They had a 'covenant' relationship with God. Life was GOOD! They didn't have to want for anything because God provided everything. They had a beautiful "relationship" with God.

But, when Adam and Eve disobeyed God, the "BROKE" that perfect 'relationship' with a Holy God and God cannot be around sin. And, the penalty for sin is death. These earthly bodies will go back to dust one day. And we will either reign with God in His kingdom with a 'new' glorified body, or be separated from Him for eternity. So after Adam and Eve sinned against God, Adam was cursed, Eve was cursed, the serpent (Satan) was cursed and the earth was cursed.

God knew that the only way man could be 'reconciled' (restored) back into a RIGHT relationship with Him was for Him to clothe Himself as sinless Man (Jesus) and become OUR substitute on that horrific Cross and take on the sins of the world. And therefore, should anyone accept Christ as their Lord and their Savior and surrender their will for His, their relationship with God can be restored. We can repent of our sin, which means to 'stop' committing "willful" sin against the One who died for us and commune/fellowship with Him; or reject Him. It is a 'choice' dear one that everyone will make while they are alive.

So, how does someone establish a 'relationship' with God? By getting to "know" Him personally, just like you would a friend. Read His Word everyday and pray first that the Lord show you what it is He wants you to learn from His Word and then how to 'apply' it in your daily life.

Get to "know" the LOVER for your soul dear one. You will never regret having a 'real' relationship with the One who laid down His life, in order to give you life and more abundantly.

Tender blessings,
?

• Heaven •

Heaven is:

+ Eternal life with God

+ Perfect communion of life and love with the Trinity and all the blessed

+ The state of supreme and definitive happiness

+ The goal of the deepest longings of humanity

• Hell •

Hell is the state of complete and final self-exclusion from communion with God and the blessed, reserved for those who refuse by their own free choice to believe and be converted from sin, even to the end of their lives. In other words, if you do not want to be with God forever then God will respect your free will decision.

No one really knows what hell is like. It has been described by people who have not been there as everything from flames to a frozen lake (Dante).

"You can check out any time you like but you can never leave."

• Heaven vs. Hell •

A holy man was having a conversation with the Lord one day and said, "Lord, I would like to know what Heaven and Hell are like." The Lord led the holy man to two doors. He opened one of the doors and the holy man looked in. In the middle of the room was a large round table. In the middle of the table was a large pot of stew which smelled delicious and made the holy man's mouth water.

The people sitting around the table were thin and sickly. They appeared to be famished. They were holding spoons with very long handles that were strapped to their arms and each found it possible to reach into the pot of stew and take a spoonful, but because the handle was longer than their arms, they could not get the spoons back into their mouths. The holy man shuddered at the sight of their misery and suffering. The Lord said, "You have seen Hell."

They went to the next room and opened the door. It was exactly the same as the first one. There was the large round table with the large pot of stew which made the holy man's mouth water. The people were equipped with the same long-handled spoons, but here the people were well nourished and plump, laughing and talking.

The holy man said, "I don't understand."

"It is simple" said the Lord, "it requires but one skill. You see, they have learned to feed each other, while the greedy think only of themselves."

Hell is really the inability to see Love working in your life. Or the inability to feel or receive love or wisdom and insight Hell is also the jealous revenge of people you've rejected. I've experienced that hell even though I didn't deserve it.

Jesus said, "You shall know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

God knows better than you are that you are grappling with these questions. He knows that you are only human, and that, on top of that, he knows that you are only 16!

I think it's great that you are asking yourself these difficult questions. In my mind, a faith that cannot stand up to questioning is no faith at all. Please have the courage to allow yourself to ask these questions of yourself, of God, and of others.

In the Parable of the Sower, Jesus said that there are those who are like seeds planted in rocky soil; they receive the word with joy, but when trials and persecution come, they give up, because THEY HAVE NO ROOT.

A faith unquestioned is a faith without roots. In fact, grappling with these questions, and exploring the issues, and seeing the possible answers, will cause the roots of your faith to deepen and grow. Your particular expression of faith--even faith in Jesus--in the end may not look exactly like someone else's expression of faith, but that's okay, or it should be. IMO, God wants genuine people, not cookie-cutter "Christians".

So take your questions to God, and keep on asking! Good luck to you, and God bless you much.

We are all sinner which makes us "unclean" to enter the presence of Heaven. Sin is a crime against a eternal God and the payment will be eternal. The human race comes as a package. Some of you will be the brothers or sisters or mothers, fathers, children, cousins, aunts, uncles of those who will receive Christ and who will spend eternity with God and God can’t create them without you. God can’t selectively choose to not create you, it doesn’t work that way. God has provided salvation for all—in Christ, whom He sent into the world. He is not “willing that any should perish” but desires “all men to be saved.” Those in hell have only themselves to blame for rejecting the full forgiveness of sins and eternal life offered to all as a free gift of God’s grace through Christ’s payment of the penalty for their sins. Don't let satan influence you by putting doubt in your mind. Proverbs 3:5,6 " Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."

Yes I do, we all went through the rebellion. The Bible is a living thing for it teaches that Jesus died for our sins but you are given the freewill of believing or not. We have to be ready to accept what we do have penalties which some Bible teachers does not teach, they teach God is love which is true but also He is the God of wrath.

That's what the atheists are here for and they seem to be doing a good number on you.

You, like many christians out there, probably do not read and have v lil knowledge of scripture or the God that you profess to believe in. Let me bring you into remembrance of the foll. verse so you get my point ...

Matthew 13.24-30 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: 25 But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. 26 But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. 27 So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? 28 He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? 29 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

' finite transgression ever equate to infinite torture? '

yes, definitely. If finite transgression is not repented of, it IS eternal torture.

this is the BASIC premise of scripture.

It is so bad that it brought Jesus the Messiah to the cross to shed His BLOOD !!!

See, its better to pray and ask God to open our eyes to UNDERSTAND than to take

the stand you're taking which would be unwittingly playing into the hands of satan.

Satan wants your soul but God is offering you your soul that you've lost in sin (eternal salvation on the cross).

do you SEE ?

I rest my case.

I am over 50. I was taught and believed the Bible since my early childhood. I studied the Bible for over 20 years, and the more I studied it the less sense it made. I respect other peoples beliefs so long as they do no harm to myself or others. But as for me, the days of believing that mythos are long past.

Gehena in the Bible is not hell, it was just a burning trash pit. People made it out to be hell in order to scare people who did not truly understand.

There is no place that is separate from God such as hell. If anything what separate from God then he really is not God. Because all thing are from God and is part of God.

the bible tells us that we should question our beliefs.. even those that support Christianity. Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians 5:21 that we should "examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good". This means all that we hold should be looked at with careful consideration to see if there is a good basis for our holding that view. The clearest view of this were those in Berea mentioned in Acts 17:11, who didn't just accept Paul's teaching, but checked it against the scriptures - making sure that Paul's claims lined up with their theology.

The Bible also teaches us that we have choices as to what we should believe. Consistently, we are admonished throughout the Scripture to choose whom we will serve. The most well known verse to this effect is John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life." According to Kittel's Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, the verb for believe means to entrust and also carries an idea of committing oneself to the person or idea.1 It can mean to be persuaded of a certain position. In the book of Romans, Paul says that if one believes in their heart that Jesus is raised from the dead, they will be saved.

You are doubting what you've been taught and that is a good thing because we should not allow anyone to teach us from their own understanding, instead you should pray and ask God to help you understand and study the bible ... read the scriptures and know one thing.. all of scripture must add up so if it doesn't add up to you that means that you are not interpreting it correctly... sometimes it is good to get help in understanding through reading other books and learning "apologetics" from teachers of truth.. sometimes you'll agree with them, sometimes you will doubt them but always look to the bible to see if what they teach is true.

most of the time you have to look at what makes more sense..you have to learn to look at things logically too... an example would be your question.. I don't agree with hell because how can finite transgression ever equate to infinite torture?I agree with you there but does that mean that the bible is wrong or is that the instruction you've been given is wrong? Or that God is unjust? How can we judge God.. only He knows what He knows and knows what men deserve...or maybe God has not revealed that to some of us, yet. one thing I do know... in the case of eternal hell for the unbelievers, weather its true or not... God does provide a way out. the problem is not that an atheist doesn't believe.. It's that he doesn't "want" to believe... it is much easier to look for the bad and then discard it as nonsense because it "seems" stupid rather than to search for the truth.

My advice to you is don't discard God or His word because you don't believe something... my advice is research the truth and pray and ask God for understanding instead. The Bible tells us that God is a perfect judge..Psalms 33:4 For the word of the LORD is right and true; he is faithful in all he does. The LORD loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love.

you can either choose to believe God and his word by faith or discard it as nonsense as the atheists do..

so if Gods word is true , then it is us who is understanding it wrongly, not that God's word is wrong.
?
2015-03-26 00:18:29 UTC
you were taught wrongly.

here's what the Bible really teaches:

(Romans 6:7) For the one who has died has been acquitted from his sin.

(Romans 6:23) For the wages sin pays is death,

(Genesis 3:19) In the sweat of your face you will eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For dust you are and to dust you will return.”

Voice your doubts to your pastor or clergy with wisdom in the Word. It takes years and years to have understanding of the knowledge you have at such a young age, even if you have been schooled in the Word since age 2. You're at a cross-roads and doubts are understandable. You need a revelational Word of Truth. I remember I had many doubts and questions when I was heavy into Bible study. How could a good God let any one, or a baby be killed or die, or send anyone to hell? I think what started me to getting a grasp is the seriousness of Sin to God. Sin entered the human race by deception and the deceiver wants that bit of info to be forgotten. God is slow to anger, so patient and doesn't want any soul to perish. The written Word is for reproof, guidance and instruction for our relationships with each other and with God and tells us we can't live up to his standards in our strenght no matter how hard we try. He does not want us to worship any idol, because any idol or false god for they can only lead us astray and to ultimate spiritual death. Only the one, true living God has paid the price himself, as Jesus, the incarnate God, so we can live forever spiritually with him. He wants those who have received Jesus in their hearts and life to spread the Good News of the Gospel. If you've been spiritually born into the family of God, share your testimony of how your life has changed. Each person chooses which god they will follow. There is only one way to be saved/spared from the debt of we each owe for our sins. We pay the price, meaning eternal separation from God or we accept that payment in full has been paid by Jesus for our sins. God is good. He made a way for each person to have life everlasting. His love for us is complete in Jesus. But he will not violate our free will to choose. Today is the day you have a choice to makewhich path you will choose? Remember, the god of this world is crafty, devious, deceptive and full-of-lies to sway you from the Truth. God truly is good and merciful and I pray He gives you the grace and wisdom to choose The Way.

You ask, "how can finite transgression ever equate to infinite torture?" I ask, "how can belief alone pay for every transgression and ever equate to infinite joy?"

It's all about perspective. Jesus gave His life to save us and somehow you focus on how unfair it is for unbelievers who reject the greatest gift of all to be sent to the lake of fire for eternity.

Yes, we're each given a choice. Those who wish to have the Lord in their lives for all eternity will get exactly what they wish. Those who wish to have the Lord out of their lives for all eternity will also get exactly what they wish.

Understand this also. Spending eternity in hell is not the penalty for our sins, it’s the consequence of being unable to pay the penalty. The penalty for our sins is the life of a sinless man, the righteous for the unrighteous (1 Peter 3:18). None of us is sinless so none of us is qualified to pay the penalty. Not for ourselves or anyone else.

Jesus agreed to pay the penalty for us, as long as we agreed to let Him. Because He was sinless, He was qualified to do so. As soon as He gave His life for us we were free. The penalty had been paid, and we were able to avoid the consequences of being unable to pay.

Therefore people don’t go to hell to pay the penalty for their sins. They go to hell because they can’t pay the penalty and refused to let Jesus pay it for them. Even after spending eternity in hell, they’ll still owe the same penalty as they did on their first day there. That's why hell is eternal torment.

as a mother.............I can tell you that MOST 10 year olds don't question God and his laws....they only reject him when they finally get their hormones moving and a God stands between them and an orgasm...........

10 year olds don't sit down and question the bible.................only those who now desire to have sex....knowing that God says..NO SEX without marriage.

it isn't convenient to follow Gods laws at 14-18.............because the body wants sexual fulfillment and the Bible stands in the way.

you don't really doubt the bible.....you are just cherry picking to make a case for yourself to ignore it all and just spend and hour masterbating or having sex with that cute kid down the street.

lets call it what it is............temptation

masturbation can be engaged in until marriage comes along without thinking of going to hell.....................

now to explain Heaven

Jesus died so the...... law of MERCY and Justice can work for all mankind.

if man repents of his sins thro his life...............the law of mercy takes over

if he does not repent of his sins.................the law of JUSTICE takes over.. and .judgment

every man and woman who has lived or who will live.....were once a spirit child of God. We desired to be like our father and to return to him.....but we were told IF we die in our sins....we cannot be forgiven...if spend our lives repenting of those sins.....we can return.

throwing away God and the Bible is your ticket to a lower kingdom.............so you wish to cut off your nose to spite your face...?

be a righteous person..a morally good person......and search the scriptures daily....and walk your journey toward God not away from him.

no one will protect you if you deny him..............and do evil

As mentioned, it is healthy to know & understand what it is you believe & why. Hell is the fate of those who reject God & Jesus Christ & don't want to be in His Heaven, in His Presence. If you don't want to go to hell, you keep seeking God out & His good purpose for your life. He gives us lots of hope & a purpose for life. He is the one we ought to be setting our intentions upon. God doesn't want you or I to be worried about hell & He can take away our fear of hell & make us pray for those who are headed that direction. Whether we believe the Bible or not or believe the truth or not that won't eliminate it happening. I believe the Bible is the inerrant Word of God & investigate it carefully with like-minded people at any point I don't quite understand. Pray, read your Bible, fellowship with other believers & share your faith with others & you'll grow in your walk with God. Don't let yourself panic & trust God to make things clear to you. Thank you for your faith in Him. Hope this helps

Who Was Jesus - peace be upon him

called "Essa" in Arabic

Islam honors all the prophets who were sent to mankind. Muslims respect all prophets in general, but Jesus in particular, because he was one of the prophets who foretold the coming of Muhammad. Muslims, too, await the second coming of Jesus. They consider him one of the greatest of Allah's prophets to mankind. A Muslim does not refer to him simply as "Jesus," but normally adds the phrase "peace be upon him" as a sign of respect.

No other religion in the world respects and dignifies Jesus as Islam does. The Quran confirms his virgin birth (a chapter of the Quran is entitled "Mary"), and Mary is considered to have been one of the purest women in all creation. The Quran describes Jesus' birth as follows:

"Behold!' the Angel said, God has chosen you, and purified you, and chosen you above the women of all nations. Mary, God gives you good news of a word from Him, whose name shall be the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, honored in this world and in the Hereafter, and one of those brought near to God. He shall speak to the people from his cradle and in maturity, and he shall be of the righteous. She said: "My Lord! How shall I have a son when no man has touched me?' He said: "Even so; God creates what He will. When He decrees a thing, He says to it, 'Be!' and it is." [3:42-47]

Muslims believe that Jesus was born immaculately, and through the same power which had brought Eve to life and Adam into being without a father or a mother.

"Truly, the likeness of Jesus with God is as the likeness of Adam. He created him of dust, and then said to him, 'Be!' and he was." [3:59]

During his prophetic mission, Jesus performed many miracles. The Quran tells us that he said:

"I have come to you with a sign from your Lord: I make for you out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, and breathe into it and it becomes a bird by God's leave. And I heal the blind, and the lepers, and I raise the dead by God's leave." [3:49]

Muhammad and Jesus, as well as the other prophets, were sent to confirm the belief in one God. This is referred to in the Quran where Jesus is reported as saying that he came:

"To attest the law which was before me, and to make lawful to you part of what was forbidden you; I have come to you with a sign from your Lord, so fear God and obey me." [3:50]

Prophet Muhammad emphasized the importance of Jesus by saying: "Whoever believes there is no god but Allah, alone without partner, that Muhammad is His messenger, that Jesus is a servant and messenger of God, His word breathed into Mary and a spirit emanating from Him, and that Paradise and Hell are true, shall be received by God into Heaven. Hi there,

I hope you believe me when I say that I do understand, and I do believe in the Bible and I have been scouring through the same Bible that is bringing the world, the concepts and the Truth of God, to this broken world. And yes I will believe exactly what it says and I believe only in Jesus as the governing entity or God of the whole entire Universe, until all his enemies are placed under his foot and he returns to the Father one day which I am looking forward to and finally all things and power will be placed back into the hands of the Father.... anyway I just felt I needed to do that so you know which side of the fence I am sitting on.... Please go through my answers on this site for the past ten years as I am sure you will find something good to heal your wounds. I wish I could talk to you as I have mentored a few, only a select few, and I teach them about the same age as you, because this is a critical age in life and the decisions you make can change the course you are on for the good or bad depending on what you choose. I choose to follow the gut instincts inside of me at your age and almost ended up dead numerous times and now 30 years later I live happily in Christ, but not always and not with every question answered, and definitely not problem free.

The profound topics which you bring up are heavy, heavy, questions and there may be, but you need to understand that there may not be a satisfying answer to. You must not start asking there questions to the wrong people, and by that I am not saying non believers or believers. But, you must indeed ask these questions to the right people, because your life depends on it. I also and I believe that everyone who ever read the Bible has had moments which you are going through unless they quit before they got there, or they quit when it got a bit hard on them.. Listen my child, I'm just saying that cause I am 50 now, your job is not to start questioning what the Bible says, and yes you are allowed to question the Bible. Your purpose is not to start feeling sorry for the world that does not know Christ because they refuse to say yes to God. Do you think an almighty God and an all loving God forgets anyone who he has allowed to come into this world. No he does not, he has been trying with these people as he will try with all people, as he is the God of so many chances, but when they are stubborn there is not much anyone can door them, especially if God cannot, as he alone can bring someone to believe in him, as he is the God of salvation. Have you stopped reading the Bible and now just want to fight the words or the parts you find hard to understand. I still have questions, but I struggle with God and I fight with myself until I find my answers, I do not start believing in some other thing or stop believing in what I know to be true. Read the words where it says he is waiting so that all will come to him and to accept his Son... What does that mean. It does not mean he is satisfied burning all the non believers. God Loves The World so much that he sent his son so that he may save the world and that they won't be condemned..... Please do not fall into the wrong hands.... and I will call you Judas for now, but that is only so you understand that what you are going through is nothing new, but it is life and death for you at your crossroads, as making the right decision may be harder but it holds life and truth and its there for us to find and it may take us the rest of our time on this earth but we must endure to the end as our rewards await us. Store up your riches in heaven and not on this world.

I love you as a brother and I want to teach you..... please read all of my answers on this site and please be careful what you expose yourself to, as we are fragile as we are only human and we need God. Blessed are those who realize their need for God.

Listen I can go on and on for days trying to help you but you must want the help, and God is the same as he knows what you want and if you desire to know some of the things which are hindrances in your walk, God is there, the answers are found in the relationship part of life with God. Have a long talk with God, and its not wrong to cry if you must. Jesus instructed us to go inside our room and close the door behind you and talk with and talk to God as if he were right there beside you, as he is right there beside you. He is Emmanuel, which me and the God who walks among us. Jesus was just saying that we sometimes have to go to a quiet place where there is nobody else and we need to have it out with God and we need to scream and we need to cry and ask God all, that bothers us, and then you will not only cleanse yourself of these things but you will be set free from them, as Jesus sets us free... Do you not think that Paul the apostle had these struggles and now that we have his experiences on paper he does hold answers to struggles of this kind... read the books of Paul... He was imprisoned he was shipwrecked how many times, and he was beaten.., do you not think those are all valid reasons to give up on God, but he stuck to it. Why. He stuck to it for us. He said that it is better to be with the lord but I remain for your salvation... That is selfless. If anybody had a right to begin questioning God, it was him and not us, but he did the work of and for God, until he passed away by beheading or whatever, as that doesn't even matter but he completed what he needed to do for God, as it was all for us today... Darwin was also a man of God, and look at what happened to him, and how he misled the world. But seriously you need to give your self a chance and take it to the master and the eternal master is The Lord. Jesus Christ. Read john chapter 14 vs 12, and do what it says. Try to use the benefits of the one he left for us... The Holy spirit as your teacher and he will lead you and direct you and take you to the truth..... Your brother in Christ, Peace and love be multiplied to you my friend...., The entire creation of God patiently awaits the next coming of Christ but in the meantime is moaning and groaning as in the pains of child labour... The whole world is suffering in these days and so its easy for the ones who are not grounded as a tree with roots, in what they believe to start believing in something else because Paul said, that prayer is like labour, but that's one place we find answers. But also there is so much out there to believe in which takes us away from God, but we must stay together and we must stand strong for the Lord, because he will do what he says he's going to do whether we are there or not, so I choose to be there.... representing him as my leader.

You mentioned that you do not agree with Hell. Well neither does the Bible.

Definition: The word “hell” is found in many Bible translations. In the same verses other translations read “the grave,” “the world of the dead,” and so forth. Other Bibles simply transliterate the original-language words that are sometimes rendered “hell”; that is, they express them with the letters of our alphabet but leave the words untranslated. What are those words? The Hebrew she’ohl′ and its Greek equivalent hai′des, which refer, not to an individual burial place, but to the common grave of dead mankind; also the Greek ge′en•na, which is used as a symbol of eternal destruction. However, both in Christendom and in many non-Christian religions it is taught that hell is a place inhabited by demons and where the wicked, after death, are punished (and some believe that this is with torment).

Does the Bible indicate whether the dead experience pain?

Eccl. 9:5, 10: “The living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all . . . All that your hand finds to do, do with your very power, for there is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in Sheol,* the place to which you are going.” (If they are conscious of nothing, they obviously feel no pain.) (*“Sheol,” AS, RS, NE, JB; “the grave,” KJ, Kx; “hell,” Dy; “the world of the dead,” TEV.)

Ps. 146:4: “His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground; in that day his thoughts* do perish.” (*“Thoughts,” KJ, 145:4 in Dy; “schemes,” JB; “plans,” RS, TEV.)

Does the Bible indicate that the soul survives the death of the body?

Ezek. 18:4: “The soul* that is sinning—it itself will die.” (*“Soul,” KJ, Dy, RS, NE, Kx; “the man,” JB; “the person,” TEV.)

“The concept of ‘soul,’ meaning a purely spiritual, immaterial reality, separate from the ‘body,’ . . . does not exist in the Bible.”—La Parole de Dieu (Paris, 1960), Georges Auzou, professor of Sacred Scripture, Rouen Seminary, France, p. 128.

“Although the Hebrew word nefesh [in the Hebrew Scriptures] is frequently translated as ‘soul,’ it would be inaccurate to read into it a Greek meaning. Nefesh . . . is never conceived of as operating separately from the body. In the New Testament the Greek word psyche is often translated as ‘soul’ but again should not be readily understood to have the meaning the word had for the Greek philosophers. It usually means ‘life,’ or ‘vitality,’ or, at times, ‘the self.’”—The Encyclopedia Americana (1977), Vol. 25, p. 236.

What sort of people go to the Bible hell?

Does the Bible say that the wicked go to hell?

Ps. 9:17, KJ: “The wicked shall be turned into hell,* and all the nations that forget God.” (*“Hell,” 9:18 in Dy; “death,” TEV; “the place of death,” Kx; “Sheol,” AS, RS, NE, JB, NW.)

Does the Bible also say that upright people go to hell?

Job 14:13, Dy: “[Job prayed:] Who will grant me this, that thou mayst protect me in hell,* and hide me till thy wrath pass, and appoint me a time when thou wilt remember me?” (God himself said that Job was “a man blameless and upright, fearing God and turning aside from bad.”—Job 1:8.) (*“The grave,” KJ; “the world of the dead,” TEV; “Sheol,” AS, RS, NE, JB, NW.)

Acts 2:25-27, KJ: “David speaketh concerning him [Jesus Christ], . . . Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell,* neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.” (The fact that God did not “leave” Jesus in hell implies that Jesus was in hell, or Hades, at least for a time, does it not?) (*“Hell,” Dy; “death,” NE; “the place of death,” Kx; “the world of the dead,” TEV; “Hades,” AS, RS, JB, NW.)

Does anyone ever get out of the Bible hell?

Rev. 20:13, 14, KJ: “The sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell* delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire.” (So the dead will be delivered from hell. Notice also that hell is not the same as the lake of fire but will be cast into the lake of fire.) (*“Hell,” Dy, Kx; “the world of the dead,” TEV; “Hades,” NE, AS, RS, JB, NW.)

Why is there confusion as to what the Bible says about hell?

“Much confusion and misunderstanding has been caused through the early translators of the Bible persistently rendering the Hebrew Sheol and the Greek Hades and Gehenna by the word hell. The simple transliteration of these words by the translators of the revised editions of the Bible has not sufficed to appreciably clear up this confusion and misconception.”—The Encyclopedia Americana (1942), Vol. XIV, p. 81.

Translators have allowed their personal beliefs to color their work instead of being consistent in their rendering of the original-language words. For example: (1) The King James Version rendered she’ohl′ as “hell,” “the grave,” and “the pit”; hai′des is therein rendered both “hell” and “grave”; ge′en•na is also translated “hell.” (2) Today’s English Version transliterates hai′des as “Hades” and also renders it as “hell” and “the world of the dead.” But besides rendering “hell” from hai′des it uses that same translation for ge′en•na. (3) The Jerusalem Bible transliterates hai′des six times, but in other passages it translates it as “hell” and as “the underworld.” It also translates ge′en•na as “hell,” as it does hai′des in two instances. Thus the exact meanings of the original-language words have been obscured.

Is there eternal punishment for the wicked?

Matt. 25:46, KJ: “These shall go away into everlasting punishment [“lopping off,” Int; Greek, ko′la•sin]: but the righteous into life eternal.” (The Emphatic Diaglott reads “cutting-off” instead of “punishment.” A footnote states: “Kolasin . . . is derived from kolazoo, which signifies, 1. To cut off; as lopping off branches of trees, to prune. 2. To restrain, to repress. . . . 3. To chastise, to punish. To cut off an individual from life, or society, or even to restrain, is esteemed as punishment;—hence has arisen this third metaphorical use of the word. The primary signification has been adopted, because it agrees better with the second member of the sentence, thus preserving the force and beauty of the antithesis. The righteous go to life, the wicked to the cutting off from life, or death. See 2 Thess. 1.9.”)

2 Thess. 1:9, RS: “They shall suffer the punishment of eternal destruction* and exclusion from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might.” (*“Eternal ruin,” NAB, NE; “lost eternally,” JB; “condemn them to eternal punishment,” Kx; “eternal punishment in destruction,” Dy.)

Jude 7, KJ: “Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.” (The fire that destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah ceased burning thousands of years ago. But the effect of that fire has been lasting; the cities have not been rebuilt. God’s judgment, however, was against not merely those cities but also their wicked inhabitants. What happened to them is a warning example. At Luke 17:29, Jesus says that they were “destroyed”; Jude 7 shows that the destruction was eternal.)

What is the meaning of the ‘eternal torment’ referred to in Revelation?

Rev. 14:9-11; 20:10, KJ: “If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: and the smoke of their torment [Greek, basa•ni•smou′] ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.” “And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.”

What is the ‘torment’ to which these texts refer? It is noteworthy that at Revelation 11:10 (KJ) reference is made to ‘prophets that torment those dwelling on the earth.’ Such torment results from humiliating exposure by the messages that these prophets proclaim. At Revelation 14:9-11 (KJ) worshipers of the symbolic “beast and his image” are said to be “tormented with fire and brimstone.” This cannot refer to conscious torment after death because “the dead know not any thing.” (Eccl. 9:5, KJ) Then, what causes them to experience such torment while they are still alive? It is the proclamation by God’s servants that worshipers of the “beast and his image” will experience second death, which is represented by “the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone.” The smoke, associated with their fiery destruction, ascends forever because the destruction will be eternal and will never be forgotten. When Revelation 20:10 says that the Devil is to experience ‘torment forever and ever’ in “the lake of fire and brimstone,” what does that mean? Revelation 21:8 (KJ) says clearly that “the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone” means “the second death.” So the Devil’s being “tormented” there forever means that there will be no relief for him; he will be held under restraint forever, actually in eternal death. This use of the word “torment” (from the Greek ba′sa•nos) reminds one of its use at Matthew 18:34, where the same basic Greek word is applied to a ‘jailer.’—RS, AT, ED, NW.
