Does God have a name??

Humans all have personal names. Wouldn’t it be reasonable for God to have a name? Having and using personal names is a vital part of human friendships. Should it be different when it comes to our friendship with God?

In the Bible, God says: “I am Jehovah. That is my name.” (Isaiah 42:8) Although he also has many titles, such as “God Almighty,” “Sovereign Lord,” and “Creator,” he honors his worshippers by inviting them to address him by his personal name.—Genesis 17:1; Acts 4:24; 1 Peter 4:19.

Many translations of the Bible contain God’s personal name at Exodus 6:3. That passage says: “I used to appear to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob as God Almighty, but as respects my name Jehovah I did not make myself known to them.”

Jehovah is a rendering of God’s name in English that has been used for centuries. While many scholars prefer the spelling “Yahweh,” Jehovah is the form of the name that is most widely recognized. The first part of the Bible was written not in English but in Hebrew, a language that is read from right to left. In that language, the divine name appears as four consonants, יהוה. Those four Hebrew characters—transliterated YHWH—are known as the Tetragrammaton.

God has hundreds of names in the Bible. To confine yourself to just one means you miss out on so much of who he is.

Yes, but in the New Testament the focus is on the name of Jesus

Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved. (Acts 4:12)

We have to ask, what's a name?

A name is ultimately an identifier, duh, right? I mean that more literally than you might think. We think of names like Paul of Tarsus, or Victor son of Ivan. Roman names are quite romantic like Amy (amitas, the beloved). So what's God's name?

God expressed as Yahweh in Hebrew is an exclamation like "hallelujah." So what do we know about identifying God according to the linguistics of the bible itself? We know it's a sound and a feeling that comes out of all living things.

The letters Y-H-W-H was used in print to remind the reader that god's name was to be pronounced as "Adonai" because it was too precious to be printed out in text and stored on a shelf. Hence, the substituted letters.

YHWH was not vowelized pronunciation marks.

That's the reason why Jewish prayers such as the shema - the most important prayer for them - pronounces Adonai and not Jehova.

"Shema Yisraeil Adonai Eloheinu Adonai echad"

"Hear O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One"

The name "Jehovah" came from a misunderstanding by medieval scholars who thought that YHWH meant "Yahoweh" or "Yehowah". The mistranslation went viral and the name is in widespread use to today.

The fact that billions of people continue to pray using this mistranslation demonstrates that they are not communicating with anything from a source beyond their own imaginations.

Even the name "Jesus" isn't the original name. Wanna hear about that one?

God has many names, but the texts you are quoting is not in the Bible Christians use.

The Name of God is sacred and should never be used lightly or mockingly.

Our friendship with God is not like our friendship with other people. If you want to make God into your buddy, you raise yourself in your own mind to the station of godhood and that is presumption.
