Many of the following are not available in Valmiki as such. These may be available in other Ramayanas or in folk forms. But these have Bhakthi Bhava and followed as traditions.

1) Garland of Betel Leaves:

After the success in the war against Ravana, Sita Devi spotted hanuman in a betel leaf garden when hanuman bowed to her feet seeking her blessings. Sita devi plucked few betel leaves and showered on hanuman in order to bless him, so the tradition is still followed.

Another story goes that when Sri Hanuman conveyed the message from Sri Rama, Sita Devi garlanded Sri Hanuman with a betel vine as a token of Her joy and appreciation, as she could not find any flowers nearby. Betel leaves should be made into a garland with a piece of arecanut in each leaf.

Betel leaves are associated with Marriage. It is believed that prospects on marriage like functions materialise by betel leaves garland.

2) Butter Dressings:

Devotees bring fresh butter from their houses, which they have themselves got from churning curds and give it to the archaka who applies it on Hanuman.

It was during the Rama Ravana war. Ravana was trying his best to defeat Rama. But each of his weapon was squashed by Rama's arrows. Rama was being carried by Hanuman as at that time. He did not have a war chariot like Ravana, whose ratha was magnificent.

Ravana was becoming frustrated. Ravana changed his tactics. Instead of attacking Rama he started to shoot at Hanuman who was carrying Rama. Hanuman had got the boon of immortality from Brahma but that did not prevent him from getting injured.

Lord Rama began to fight like a whirlwhind and soon made Ravana run from the battle field. Our Lord tolerates any amount of hardship but cannot see His bhaktas being troubled. When they retired to their camp Rama made Hanuman to lie down and inspite of his protests called for cool butter applied it Himself on Hanuman's burning wounds.

To remember that, we still apply butter on Hanuman.

3) Senduram Application:

Once Hanuman saw Sita devi applying senduram on her fore-head and asked reason for this. Sita Devi said that she did it for her husbands well being. Hearing this Hanuman applied senduram all over his body claiming for the well being of lord Rama.

4) Vada Mala:

(i) Anjaneya loves the hard and crunchy vada so its offered for the lord.

(ii) This is a delicacy made of urud dal (black gram dal-Vigna Mungo) made into a garland. The story goes that Sri Hanuman who is always in meditation on Sri Rama gets disturbed by the Vada Maala and bestows any boon asked by the devotee so that He would not be disturbed again by the devotee.

(iii) According to another legend, Anjaneya was given a very big vada by His mother on the eve of His departure to Lanka for the war so that He could eat out of it little by little whenever He felt hungry.

(iv) The Episode of the Pearl Necklace:

The coronation ceremony of Lord Rama was celebrated with great éclat and pomp. Sita gave Hanuman a necklace of pearls of the rarest quality. Hanuman received it with great respect and began to break the pearls with His teeth. Sita, and other ministers who were sitting in the council-hall, were quite astonished at this queer act of Sri Hanuman.

Sita asked Hanuman, "O mighty Hero! What are You doing? Why do You break the pearls?" Sri Hanuman said, "O venerable Mother! It is the most valuable necklace, indeed, as it has come to me through Thy holy hand. But I want to find out whether any of the pearls contains my beloved Lord Rama. I do not keep a thing devoid of Him. I do not find Him in any of the pearls." Sita asked, "Tell me whether You keep Lord Rama within You." Hanuman immediately opened His heart and showed it to Sri Rama, Sita and others. They all found Lord Rama, accompanied by Sita, in the heart of Sri Hanuman.

We assume the vadas in the garland may have the same treatment with Sri Hanuman and He would bite these vadas with his teeth to find Lord Rama!

5) Sriramajayam Garland:

A garland made wth small strips of paper with each strip contains inscription 'Sriramajayam' (Nama of Lord Srirama for victory).

Garland made up of peepal leaves with shree ram written on it is also in use.

The same Hanuman who gone as an ambassador to srilanka is the Hanuman you are referring. He is a chiranjeevi which you pointedout. He is not waiting. He is here only. Some misinterrupting Him as waiting. you are now here on earth. Did it mean you are waiting? This means you are present. you are here. so, Sri Hanuman is here. He is chiranjeevi. He is here in the earth to bless the Rama Baktas. The yugas, years, months, days, times etc.,are only to humans and not for chirajeevis. He is one of the seven Chiranjivis. He was the only learned scholar who knew the nine Vyakaranas. He learnt the Sastras from the sun-god. He was the wisest of the wise, strongest of the strong and bravest of the brave. He was the Sakti of Rudra. He who meditates on him and repeats his name attains power, strength, glory, prosperity and success in life. He can simply live with Rama is the question from you. If he stays with Rama, who will give hand to the people suffering from known and unknown circles? so, he is wating for the people on suffer to bless and to give relief to those people. He is waiting, it is true. ================= Trisha ========================

I've heard about the kunkum red color wherein, mother Sita told hanuman that she put it for the well-being or protection of Rama, and thus Hanuman covered himself with kumkum. Therefore, in most of the temples we see Hanuman covered with Kumkum all over the body.

Sometimes, letting go seems like the easiest thing to do. But think about this: you've invested so much of your time and energy into another person; you've made a solemn promise; and you still know there's love, even if it's hiding underneath the surface. There are lot of stories locally told about Lord Hanuman as well as other Lords.

I do worship him and offer everything - the first part - before I eat or drink, those are eatable to me.

To my knowledge, Ramayana has not shown any of his such interest,

but devotees later added many many many sub-stories

with preference to certain temples where Lord Hanuman is worshipped.

In temple festivals, I have seen some big Notice Boards prescribing that "Offer of Coins is important here" and on query, the reply would be "any coins - silver, gold or nickel " (but coins).

So I believe, the location you refer may contain full of cows and calfs and great quantity of unsold milk which are to be encashed and your narration may be a tell-tale in this concern. Please check.

Sri Hanuman

Lord Hanuman symbolizes the qualities of an ideal devotee of God. The letters of his name can be interpreted as:

H = Helpfulness (kindness)

A = Adoration (devotion)

N = Naturalness (sincerity)

U = Understanding (knowledge)

M = Modesty (humility)

A = Allegiance (loyalty)

N = Nishkama-karma (selfless work in service of God)

Sri Anjaneya and The great Epic of Ramayana

The story of the great epic Ramayana is also the story of Sri Anjaneya, who strides throughout the epic like a colossus. Ha means Isvara, Supreme Consciousness; Nu means that which pervades; Man means the manifested. Hanuman, thus, means the manifested existence of the Supreme Consciousness which pervades all.

Sri Hanuman and Pearl neclace

Rama wanted to proclaim Hanuman as an ideal person to the world. At the time of coronation of Rama, he was giving presents to various people. Although he had given presents to everyone, he did not give any present to Hanuman. This caused some trouble in the mind of Sita. Sita was directly involved in the life they led in the forest and she saw how Hanuman was always fulfilling Rama’s orders. So she was wondering why Rama had not given any present to Hanuman and she was sorry for this. She could not bear this injustice to Hanuman. She quietly and slowly told this to Rama and Rama said that if she felt so strongly, she could give Hanuman any present which she liked. She had a very valuable necklace of pearls around her neck. She removed it and gave it to Hanuman.

Hanuman held this very valuable necklace in his hand, began to remove all the pearls, one by one, from the necklace and breaking each pearl, kept it near his ears and after sometime threw it away. In this way, he was throwing away all the pearls of the necklace. Looking at this sight, Rama and Lakshmana were very surprised. Sita too appeared to be angry but she knew very well the situation. She called Hanuman with a view to proclaim to the world Hanuman’s nature, and she asked Hanuman why was he breaking and throwing away the pearls and thus behaving truly like a monkey?

Hanuman told Sita that he was examining whether he could listen to the name of Rama in the pearls. He said that if he did not hear the name of Rama, the pearl was of no value to him and so he was throwing such pearls away. Hanuman said, even if it be a pearl, if there is no Rama nama in it, the pearl is no better than a stone for him. Sita asked if he could hear the name of Rama even in lifeless matter. Hanuman said that he did not want anything to remain on him if it did not vibrate with Rama nama. Sita exclaimed in return, if he meant that his entire body is filled with the name of Rama! Hanuman then plucked out a strand of hair from his body and held that hair near the ear of Rama and Sita. Sita found that even that little strand of hair was resounding with the name of Rama. Here we see that Hanuman’s entire body was filled with the name of Rama and so where was the room for kama in his body. It is an established truth that where there is kama, there cannot be Rama and where there is Rama, there is no place for kama.

Because Hanuman was such a devotee, he could be the foremost servant of Rama. He was totally free from egoism, pride and envy. In Lanka he did not boast of his powers but was content to declare himself as humble servant of Rama. This humility is the true mark of a devotee.

Birth of Sri Anjaneya

Several different traditions account for Hanuman's birth. One is that at the time that Anjana was worshipping Lord Shiva, elsewhere, Dasharatha, the king of Ayodhya, was performing the Putrakama Yagna in order to have children. As a result, he received some sacred pudding, payasam, to be shared by his three wives, leading to the births of Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata, and Shatrughna. By divine ordinance, a kite snatched a fragment of that pudding and dropped it while flying over the forest where Anjana was engaged in worship. Vayu, the Hindu deity of the wind, delivered the falling pudding to the outstretched hands of Anjana, who consumed it. Hanuman was born to her as a result.

Being Anjana's son, Hanuman is also called Anjaneya , which literally means "arising from Anjani"

This story shows how closely Sri Hanuman is related to Sri Rama and His brothers.

Baghwan Sani and Anjaneya

According to a legend, when Sani approached Anjaneya to bring Him under his spell, Anjaneya caught him by the hair, dangled him in the air, and blew air on him. Anjaneya let him go only after a promise from him that he would never harm Him or those who pray to Him.

Vadamalai

Sri Hunaman aka Anjaneyar, one can offer Tulsi, Betal Leaves, fruits, Lime etc. as garland on occassions. However, the Vadai Malai garland is a very interesting story behind the theme.

According to the Ramayana on his return from Srilanka, following Lord Sri Ramas victory over Ravana and the subsequent coronation of Lord Rama and Sita in Ayodhya, all the guests attending the coronation received gifts before their departure. But when it came to Sri Anjaneya, Lord Sri Rama said that Sri Anjaneyar would remain with him always. Overjoyed, Sita Devi made a Vadai Maalai for Sri Anjaneyar and adorned it on him so that he would eat it and be happy. Since then, the practice of adorning Sri Anjaneyar with the Vadai Maalai came into existence.

Devotees adorn the Vadai Maalai to please Sri Anjaneya and receive his blessings for a happy and peaceful life

The Vennai kappu ( Butter ) too is a kind of appeasement to Hanuman.

While he carried the Parvat hill to get the Siranjeevi herb, some of the bacterias and mud fell on his hairy body. To get rid of these itch and to smoothen his body, the butter was applied on his body and Anjaneya was allowed to take bath after the application which gave him immediate relief from the lices, bacteria etc. This too now exists as an appeasement to the Hanuman known as Siriya Thiruvadi.

Garland Made of Betel Leaves

The story goes that when Sri Hanuman conveyed the message from Sri Rama, Sita Devi garlanded Sri Hanuman with a betel vine as a token of Her joy and appreciation, as she could not find any flowers nearby. Betel leaves should be made into a garland with a piece of arecanut in each leaf.

Application of Kunkumam on Sri Anjaneya body

According to one legend Sita was applying Kunkumam to her head, (maang) and Hanuman questioned why and Sita replied that this would ensure a long life for her husband. Hanuman then smeared his entire body with sindhoor, in an effort to ensure Rama’s immortality.

Sindhur and Oil

Once when Hanuman was proceeding to Lanka with the Dronagiri hills Bharat struck Him with an arrow and wounded His leg. The wound healed with a mixture of sindur and oil.

Hence sindur and oil are Hanuman’s favourites.’

Regarding Vadamalai, and Sindoor , there is another legend:

Vada Maala

This is a delicacy made of urud dal (black gram dal-Vigna Mungo) made into a garland. The story goes that Sri Hanuman who is always in meditation on Sri Rama gets disturbed by the Vada Maala and bestows any boon asked by the devotee so that He would not be disturbed again by the devotee. According to another legend, Anjaneya was given a very big vada by His mother on the eve of His departure to Lanka for the war so that He could eat out of it little by little whenever He felt hungry. Incidentally, Urud dal, the chief ingredient, is offered to appease Rahu, the significator of abnormal fears and snake curse etc.

.

Importance of Sindoor

It is believed that when Sri Hanuman conveyed the message from Sri Rama, Sita Devi applied sindoor on Her head. Seeing it, Anjaneya became extremely happy and started rolling in sindoor. Sindoor is considered as a sign of victory. It is believed that the forehead of Sri Hanuman always shines with sindoor.

Sri Hanuman Chalisa

Saint Thulasi Das who was a great admirer of Hanuman, also wrote forty verses praising Hanuman and called it Hanuman Chalisa. This is possibly the most popular Hindu prayer written in Hindi even today. Its extreme simplicity makes it dear to every one’s heart.
