Question:
Why can't I ask questions about Christianity?

Everytime I try to ask a Christian about their religion I get dismissive answers or no answers at all. I've also heard that in church you can't raise your hand and ask a question about the sermon. Why is that? I don't think my questions are offensive, I'm just curious. I guess curiosity isn't a quality Christians like...

Yes, curiosity is a quality most religions don't like. You're supposed to blindly follow the religion's dogma, and not question what or why. That's because if followers were curious, and started looking for real answers, they'd see how ridiculous all the myth and superstition are, they'd learn how far from reality the claims of their religion are, and they'd "fall away" from the flock of sheep blindly following the herd.

Being curious is a good thing -- it will lead you to knowledge and understanding. What it won't lead you to is acceptance by religions.

Hi Sara,

I am told some churches you can raise your hand and ask a question.

What I do is when I go to Bible study or Sunday school I ask.

We had two guys that you could tell read there Bible a lot so I use to ask them a differnt question every week, Also I have sent an E-mail to the pastor as well as just dropped in on him durning the day at church like on my lunch hour.

Its one of the benifits of fellowship with other Christians.

If you want to E-mail me questions feel free if I dont know the answer I will find an answer for you.

Hi Sara,

I would be glad to answer any and every question that you have. If I do not have an answer, I can find out and write you back. My address is available to you. I also am on this site quite often. I am a Christian from Ohio. At our Church, we always stick around and answer questions of anyone that would like to ask each of us individually. It is our custom to do so. The sermon is a time for the preacher to convey a short sermon/message and extend the invitation for those who may want to become Christians. GOD certainly has room for any and every question that you would like to know. I am only HIS servant. There area number of other Christians that I know who would do the same. Have a great LOrd's Day.

you should ask questions if you don't understand. You can ask the preacher questions after the service whatever questions you have, I know I do. Also on Wednesdays it's more of a group study and you can raise your hand during that time to add to or ask questions. Don't feel intimidated by those holier then thou Christians who may try to bully or look down on you. Stand up for what you want to learn. Ignore those who try to dismiss you and go on to the next person who may be able to answer your question. Good luck and God bless!

It's probably because they fear that there are questions of which they can't answer for they themselves dont really understand.

Well, it's just my guess. As a Muslim, sometimes I am faced with difficult questions too, but I believe that God has made my religion easy to be understood by sincere believers but hard for hypocrites and certain bigoted disbelievers. Thus, although sometimes it takes quite some time, I've always managed to obtain answers to the questions that both other people and I ask from from reputable sources.

God knows best.

Peace and Love.

Church is not the appropriate forum to raise your hand and ask questions. You should attend a Sunday School class for that. Maybe your answers are too deep for some Christians. Some people believe you will rot in hell if you question your beliefs, but that is not so. The more you question the more you will learn.

I'm sure this will probably get me in trouble ,

IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED BY ASSESSMENT OF RELIGIOUS BELIEFS BY NON-RELIGIOUS YEAH-HOOS , YOU MAY WANT TO TOTALLY IGNORE MY ANSWER.

Don't mistakenly label this as a exclusive Christian affliction. I feel that all religions have skeletons in their closets, those roots to their origin that REQUIRE FAITH ALONE to accept them as fact.

Keep in mind that the CHURCH(I use this word as a base label for the structure housing the religion's practice) is often considered a shepherd and the followers are considered the flock. The flock does not always know why they follow the shepherd, they just do it because that is what the were taught(raised) to do.

church is not the proper place to ask questions. sunday school or bible study is typically the time that you are supposed to ask questions. just write down all of your questions from sunday sermon and ask them during bible study. hope i helped though it seems you have more than willing christians who answered that are willing to answer all if any of your questions. Im a christian and even i dont have the answers to everything. I question some things in the bible as well. I would have to be God himself to know "why" but we are all humans just as non believers. take care.

Ask away If I see it I'll give you the best answer I can. Usually Sunday School is the questioning part of Church. Sermons are suppose to be informative and educational as it pertains to the Word of God.

I can just imagine somebody in church going "Coo-ee, vicar, ...." in the middle of a sermon!!

Unless he wants to rush off for his lunch afterwards, I'm sure he should be more than happy to discuss theology with you afterwards.

On here, you do get some very "Because the bible says so" types. I've had some good answers to my questions though.

I understand where you are coming from there have been time that my Muslim children have gone with their Christian father (we are divorced) to church. One Sunday my oldest came home and said the the preacher told him that he was not to have his own opinion on anything only the opinion the preacher gave him.

My son has been taught in the Mosque that he has his own freedom of thought and opinion and that he needs to ask questions. So when his father preacher told him differently he did not understand why.

I hope that you do find the answers you seek.

Well, we invite questions. How else can one learn if one does not question. It is very hard to teach some one who has no questions. Questions are a sign of a thinker. That, in my opinion is a very good thing.

I had many many questions and when I stared studying with the Witnesses, they answered all of them using God's Word, the Bible. All the answers are right there in the one book given to us by our Creator. He is the only one that truly knows what we need.

Hebrews 4: 12: "For the word of God is alive and exerts power and is sharper than any two-edged sword and pierces even to the dividing of soul and spirit, and of joints and [their] marrow, and [is] able to discern thoughts and intentions of [the] heart."

Isaiah 48: 17 & 18: "This is what Jehovah has said, your Repurchaser, the Holy One of Israel: “I, Jehovah, am your God, the One teaching you to benefit [yourself], the One causing you to tread in the way in which you should walk. 18 O if only you would actually pay attention to my commandments! Then your peace would become just like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea"

Jeremia 10:23: " I well know, O Jehovah, that to earthling man his way does not belong. It does not belong to man who is walking even to direct his step."

Proverbs 3: 5: " Trust in Jehovah with all your heart and do not lean upon your own understanding. 6 In all your ways take notice of him, and he himself will make your paths straight."

John 17: 3: " This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ."

1 John 4:1: "Beloved ones, do not believe every inspired expression, but test the inspired expressions to see whether they originate with God, because many false prophets have gone forth into the world."

So please continue to question and look for ones which are ready to help you find the answers using God's Word, the Bible, not their own interpretaion...

Acts 17:10 & 11: " Immediately by night the brothers sent both Paul and Silas out to Be·roe´a, and these, upon arriving, went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 Now the latter were more noble-minded than those in Thes·sa·lo·ni´ca, for they received the word with the greatest eagerness of mind, carefully examining the Scriptures daily as to whether these things were so."

Because a house made of cars will easily fall down if it is disturbed. Faith is such a precarious thing. There is no proof that what Christians believe is true or real, and yet it is so important to many people that it is true. If someone pokes holes in your meaning of life, the repercussions would be huge. People in essence are sheep and want to take the path of least aggrevation.

However, I am sure there are many, many religious scholars and believers who are more than willing to talk endlessly about what they believe....

What is not to understand? They have a monopoly on truth based on a book written long ago by men who thought the world was flat and disease is caused by demons. Not only that, they believe it is a violation of their rights if they are denied the opportunity to use the coercive power of the state to shove their superstitious beliefs down every ones throat. We just have to marginalize them, which may mean an all out war against institutionalized stupidity.

well I don't know about other churches but in mine we encourage those with a question to raise their hand and ask the question...we get more out of the Word being preached and it makes for a more unified atmosphere....traditional churches do not allow this ..but things are changing....and Im glad

Some fanatics of any religion abound online. These people prefer that no one ask any questions about their religion - questions are meant to examine and examinations sometimes find flaws.

Some religions are more naturally open to experimentation. Wicca, for example, is almost always come to later in life, by people who left another religion - they are therefore accustomed to questions as they asked them once, too.

Christianity, however, is traditionally a "my mother and father taught me this is true" religion, and more practitioners are upset by questions.

IMO.

Because the only source of their information or proof they have is the bible. Not a really provable source of information in my opinion. Get 10 Christians all of the same denomination in a room and ask them the same question about a bible verse and you will get at least 5 different answers. They are afraid of being proved wrong or not being to prove their beliefs.

I would be more than willing to answer what questions I could. Of course, I'm one of those Christians who question alot of things about my own faith anyways, so I probably wouldn't have the best answers. (The whole world was flooded, yet Noah somehow managed to get every single animal species in a boat built with archaeic tools, none of the animals died, and then he and his family repopulated the earth--like alot of the bible stories, seems a bit silly to me.)

Keep asking questions that probe and dismantle. It's the way you learn, and keep a thick-skin in this forum.

well,im sorry if i offend any christians out there but the reason might be is because they dont really know the right answer to your questions.they might know, but, they are living a lifestyle of their own instead of living the way the bible says to live.for example, homosexuality, there are alot of gay priests out there and also priests who have molested or raped children who only get sent to another place while the church tries to cover it up.they even get to keep being priests!!!!what respect to bible principles is that?!!you need to learn the truth.heres a site that will answer ALLof your questions:watchtower.org,its really helped me alot

You can ask me ANYTIME! Personally.

After ANY service one can question the Chief Pastor about ANYTHING that happened at the service!

Only islam does NOT allow CRITICAL questioning.

It is one of those cases where no one that believes knows what they are talking about and the ones that know what they are talking about don't believe anymore.
