Can hindus eat non vegetarian food if necessary?I loved eating non veg but then I started praying and realized that it is considered a sin.Even now i would love eating non veg and i'm severely anemic and also doctor has advised me to eat protein rich food. What should I do?I read somewhere that hindus can eat non veg if offered to god, so they can eat it as prasad. I read killing animals is considered as a sin but eating non veg is not a sin cause we are just eating meat and did not kill any animal and butcher is just doing his job.I'm really confused if I should not eat non veg thn suggest some protein rich food and also some home remedies to treat anemia fast

In Vedas and Shashtras it is said: Ahimsa Parmo Dharma, and in Shreemad Bhagvatam it is said that it should not be even done (killing) for sacrifices purposes and Yagna and Shraadh... Where we see the mixture or description in holy books of kiling animals for sacrificing or religious purposes, it is said that its not written by our Rishis, it was changed by people who loved to eat meat etc. In Shiv Puran, it is said that any one kills any innocent Jiva (living being) will be suffering from Pain given to him for ages (Reference: Shiv Puran-Uma Samhita-Chapter 2, 3, 4, 8). You can read the scriptures that I have quoted. People who loved to eat meat and drink alcohol, just curropted the meanings of scriptures to fulfil their own purpose. In Shreemad Bhagvat-Narad Muni describes that ''.... Para Pritiyatha Na Pashuhinsa'' even to make Devtas and Pitrus happy, do not eat meat or make sacrifices of animals or birds...

‘Ahimsa Paramo Dharma’ in Mahabharata:

(i) Book 1, Chapter 11, Verse 12

ahimsa paramo dharmah sarvapranabhrtam smrtah

tasmāt pranabhrtah sarvan na himsyad brahmanah kva cit

(ii) Book 3, Chapter 198, Verse 69

ahimsa satyavacanam sarvabhutahitam param

ahimsa paramo dharmah sa ca satye pratisthitah

satye krtva pratistham tu pravartante pravrttayah

(iii) Book 13, Chapter 116, Verse 1

ahimsa paramo dharma ity uktam bahusas tvaya

sraddhesu ca bhavan aha pitrn amisa kanksinah

Some rituals are done based on reason based & some are not. This belongs to second category. My personal opinion - following this particular ritual is of no sense - Either we should be purely veg r completely non-veg.

As I have seen many guys asking this question many times, I would like to tell you complete details before you decide if you want to be vegetarian or non vegetarian

Hinduism or sanatan dharma never brings in any strict code of conduct or restriction on being vegetarian or non vegetarian and even if you get any such reference anywhere in our holy books it is not proposed by Hinduism as whole but you might see some suggestions that might be promoting vegetarian diet . it may be for betterment of ecological balance or society.

if we talk about Vedic knowledge, From the very beginning Vedic wisdom suggested that that human existance ,society and consciousness will go through many transition forms and metamorphosis before they can get balanced state of self relization/actualization.

Our holy texts like purana's and veda's nowhere have said or suggested the total deniel of eating non-vegetarian diet and even drinks like madira(alcohol).

if you look around the period of which Mandala-7 of the Rig Veda has referred to regarding the the ‘Dasarjana’ battle, we can make out conclusion that it was around 10,000 B.C +/-120 years when subcontinent ?(india, pakistan, banladesh etc)were cold in that perioed after the long sting of ice age.it was not practical enough for humans to be complete vegetrians or it was not physible to avoid intoxicating drinks in such cold weather and The concept of vegetrain diet & avoiding all forms of liquor or intoxic drinks emerged in much later time when the climate started to get warmer due to a sudden shift in Earth's rotational axis from 24 degrees to 23.50 degrees around 3,100 BC and when Advaitwa theory was gradually getting into the society and this is same time span when one of our most respected "Swaraswati River" changed its course and eventually dried up.

Now next question that will pop up in your mind is then When did we start to move towards vegetarian diet ?

Around 850 BC the jainism came with concept where ideal form of food was vegetarian. Jainism firmly went against the 'Manu Smriti' idea in chapter 5 verse 30 which says “The eater who eats the flesh of those to be eaten does nothing bad, even if he does it day after day, for God himself created some to be eaten and some to be eater.”

Their mantra for vegetarian food promoted that ideal form of food for humans should be vegetarian

‘Mahavira’ (24th Tirthankara) who belonged to ‘Lichchavi’ tribe was first person to take complete vegetarin diet and simultaniously there was ‘Shakyan’ tribe which belonged to Gautam Buddha continued with their non-vegetarian diet even when they immedrged as one of the major religions of the world around 400BC. the vegetarian concept became a accepted norm in most north india due to 12 years of devastating femines and draught that came in the latter part of noth india during the rule of Chandragupta Maurya around 340 BC and this was time when major part of jain community migrated to south india including the kind under the leadership of “Bhadrabahu .

Chandragupta Maurya’

‘Chandragupta Maurya’ and settled around ‘Sravana-Belagola’.Not many people know that the finest of Tamil poems and literature like ‘Jivaka Chintamani’ by Tirutakkatevar and ‘Kural’ by Thiruvalluvar’ were all composed by Jain monks after this mass migration.

The Jains of south india laid the foundation of our modern Tamil Grammar and latter laid the foundation of Telegu literature.

Those left out regions of ancient bharata where Jainism couldn’t spread properly continued with their non-vegetarian diet.

A live example of such thing can be seen in Bengal where even the Brahmins eat non-vegetarian food.

However the ideal form of food should be vegetarian was reinforced by Jainism around .

Now last question that come out of mind is Should all Hindus become Vegetarian ?

well if you ask me ,the answer is very simple the time have changed and Hinduism is like a bark of tree which changes with time. at present time seeing the climatic condition of the globe and depleting digestion power of humans, i would suggest a strong vegetarian diet but this is not a restriction for anyone who counts himself as Hindu.

There is no need to eat non-veg food. You can get lot of proteins from nuts, grains, wheat, milk, butter etc.

The Vedas clearly say that slaughtering cattle is one of the worst sins. So you must not eat beef or meat of any milk producing animal.

You must eat egg whites, chicken and fish to be in good health. I've been into bodybuilding and I know eating protein is extremely important. You should also note that vegetarian sources of protein are the the best since they are easily digested by the liver. Eat soyabeans, pulses which are good sources of protein. Whey protein is considered the best protein in bodybuilding. You may also purchase whey protein supplements.

If you are Hindu then you would know, if you are not then why worry so much. Brahmist and followers of Krishna don't eat meat products. Other sects of Hindu eat some meatproducts. Pescitarians eat fish only, some eat only fish or foul. If you are dead set on not eating meat you may want to eat a c ombination of foods that will unlock a higher iron content. Figs & spinach with a high 'E' content for absorption as well as research what other things will unlock the iron nutrients.

Yes Hindus can eat non-veg. Some sects and groups forbid it. If you are a spiritual Hindu you can consider non-animal sources of protein which you can find out through Yahoo Answers vegetarian and vegan section or by using yahoo/ google search. Jainism is the only religion which forbids non-veg.

Eating Non veg is not a sin. Some bigoted individuals have concocted this story. The idea of vegetarianism springs from adifferent point of View. Every thing in nature is endowed with a GUNA. It may be saatvic, Rahasic or Taamsic. Saatvic food promotes Saatvic qualities. Rajasic promotes Rajasic qualities and Taamsik food makes aPERSON IGNORANT OF THE TRUTH.

Animals are ignorant beings.eating thier flesh will enhance ignorance only. Those who seek true knowldge should avoisd Taamasik food totally.

If you are a worldly person with no inclination for any thing except the taste of food and drink you can surely enjoy non veg food and be happy.

Nearly 80% of them eat meats of all types.

For getting protein u can go to any medical shop and ask for "B-PROTEIN" which is a drink mix and it is enough.

It is certainly a sin whether u kill animal or eat killed animal's meat. Killing animals and birds or anything else is nothing but a sin.

Do not try to discriminate in many words.

I think its matter of personal freedom nowadays so many muslims are vegetarians as well although most will be non-vegetarians m a Sikh though don't confuse me :D lol

anyways if u want to eat u r free to eat there are not so much restrictions in any religion.

Why God has given Us Canine Teeths think abt that? Its made for eating Flesh...

How early man used to survive?Think about that?By killing other animals and eating there flesh.

Why some Hindus give sacrifice of animals and have common views on meat eating while others not they give sacrifice to Goddess....

Although Sikhism promotes mostly vegetarianism but it neither stops as well

"The fools argue about flesh and meat, but they know nothing about meditation and spiritual wisdom.

What is called meat, and what is called green vegetables? What leads to sin?

It was the habit of the gods to kill the rhinoceros, and make a feast of the burnt offering.

Those who renounce meat, and hold their noses when sitting near it, devour men at night.

They practice hypocrisy, and make a show before other people, but they do not understand anything about meditation or spiritual wisdom.

O Nanak, what can be said to the blind people? They cannot answer, or even understand what is said. " Guru Granth Sahib

But some others views in Sikhism are of Vegetarianism..So sikhs can be veg whereas some can be non-veg so Sikhs have mixed reviews. Some say that those who eat non-veg will go to hell We are to small on these debate's

About Hindus mostly are Vegetarians "The devotees of the Lord are released from all kinds of sins because they eat food which is offered first for sacrifice. Others, who prepare food for personal sense enjoyment, verily eat only sin." -Bhagawad Geeta

It is not a sin to eat meat atleast according to less conservative non-brahmin Hindus...

Unless you are not a pious and ultra conservative Brahman nut from a gurukul you need not follow all the religious dietary rules conservatively particularly when it conflicts with your health and well being.

according to hindu purana many hindu gods like krishna, rama, arjun had eaten meat, and all these gods or so said people were belonging to kshatriya caste people belonging to this cast can eat meat moreover chavana maharshi who is mentioned in ramayana also took meat.brahmins from some states like kasmir, bengal can eat meat and fish.furthermore some study says meat had been eaten by brahmins until the discovery of buddism in which a buddist cant eat non veg only after watching this bramins stopped eating nonveg.our great swami vivekananda had also been supporting eating nonveg he once said eating non would make you stronger. but eating too much nonveg is not good thats why some reccoment veg over non rather than this stupid moral side.

“All things which are good cometh of God; wherefore, every thing which inviteth and enticeth to do good, and to love God, and to serve him, is inspired of God. Wherefore, take heed … that ye do not judge … that which is good and of God to be of the devil” (Moroni 7:12–14).

That approach to differences will yield tolerance and also respect toward us.

Our tolerance and respect for others and their beliefs does not cause us to abandon our commitment to the truths we understand and the covenants we have made. That is an absolute truth. We are cast as combatants in the war between truth and error. There is no middle ground. We must stand up for truth, even while we practice tolerance and respect for beliefs and ideas different from our own and for the people who hold them.

Look at what is said about the being vegetarian by some greatest personalities of the world. They all are most talented, most knowledgeable and great philosopher, achiever, contributor, etc..... better than me, you and any one else. So much reason to believe in vegetarianism , why can't you?

Unfortunately, their is no CODE OF ETHICS or MORAL CODE have been written so for by Hindu saints/shankracharyas for Hinduism followers unlike the Buddhist and Jainism code of ethics for their followers. That is why those who are propagandists of hinduism like Vishwa Hindu Parisad (VHP), RSS (Rashtriya swayamsewak sangha) and many more hindu sanghathan's leaders and followers are non-vegitarian (about 80%-85%), most of them come from non-veg Rajput(thakur) community, Brahmin community, non-talented bussiness community. In India's villages most of the Hindu community have a veg habit but in city's urban hindu almost are non-veg across the all hindu community. It is called in Hindi language phrase 'Eda Bankar Peda Khana' (Acts like an idiot and ate whole the cake) , in true sense when we r talking about non-voilence/non-vegiterian in India about in Hinduism.

So it is their interest not to have any Hindu Code of Ethics, on that basis one could has called or identified as the follower of Hinduism. On the contrary most of Hindu of Dalit Community (Scheduled Caste, SC, SHUDRA, UNTOUCHABLES) have to be found vegetarian in rural as well as urban areas. But they are exploited socially, economically, politically, educationally, ...etc. constantly since 3000 years on the basis of their work/profession and food habits. Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee is a fond of prawn (a kind of fish, Jhinga..) , and many more political / non-political Hinduism flag bearer in India. Every where you may easily found double stand peoples specially in Hinduism & Islams as well, although I an Hindu, but can'nt hesitate by saying no moral, no ethics reflects in people what they say and what they practices.

“He who does not value life does not deserve it.” -Leonardo da Vinci

“Nonviolence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all living beings, we are all savages.” -Thomas Edison, inventor

“He who, seeking his own happiness, punishes or kills beings who also long for happiness, will not find happiness after death.” -Buddhist Dhammapada

“It is necessary to correct the error that vegetarianism has made us weak in mind, or passive or inert in action. I do not regard flesh-food as necessary at any stage” -Mahatma Gandhi

“I do not see any reason why animals should be slaughtered to serve as human diet when there are so many substitutes. After all, man can live without meat...” -The Dalai Lama

“As long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seeds of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love.” -Pythagorus

I did it for political, moral reasons, thinking that I was making this great sacrifice, but it was absolutely necessary; I was not going to contribute to the violence in the world anymore. -Alicia Silverstone

In the words of George Bernard Shaw:

We are living graves of murdered beasts

Slaughtered to satisfy our appetites.

We never pause to wonder at our feasts,

If animals like men could possibly have rights.

Meat can never be obtained without injury to living creatures, and injury to sentient beings is detrimental to (the attainment of) heavenly bliss; let him therefore shun (the use of) meat.
