Question:
Is evolution really scientific?

The Astronomer Robert Jastrow
Evolutionist Loren Eiseley
Physicist H.S Lipson

All of these I've read about, and their opinions. Now I'd like to have yours.

The theory of evolution is scientific as "creationism" is pseudo-scientific fiddle-faddle.

The theory of evolution is based on science as "intelligent design" is based on lies and delusion.

Thanks for the opportunity to render my reasonable and rational opinion.

Edit @ "joyfulthought": Where's the source/link for that laundry list of alleged scientists that don't "believe" in evolution? A Christian/creationist website? And what's the point? That there is an extremely small minority of humans with scientific backgrounds that don't use their intellects properly because of their personal religious beliefs, which are completely out of step with scientific mainstream thought?

Edit @ Tiger: You arrogantly believe that you know the mind of "God." Your hubristic comments about the nature of "God" (who is unknowable) reflects a degree of religious delusion that borders on mental illness. Don't say you haven't been warned.
2008-09-08 05:10:32 UTC
Yes. It's as scientific as you can possibly be. It's as proven as anything can be. There's more evidence for evolution than there is for the passage of time. To anyone who doesn't have religious problems accepting evolution, it's almost funny how much of a non-issue the creation/evolution controversy it is. The only reason it isn't more amusing is that people actually get away with snapping up doctorates at third-rate diploma mills and then preaching creationism as scientific theory. I wouldn't be surprised if they started arguing against the heliocentric model of the solar system at this point.

Is combustion scientific? It has been observed. The theory of combustion is 'scientific' because it is at least hypothetically capable of being disproved. So far, no dice. Evolution has also been observed in the wild, not just in laboratories. The theory of evolution, which is not the same thing as evolution, is 'scientific' because it is at least hypothetically capable of being disproved. So far, no dice. Science has the fossils, anatomy, behaviour, biochemistry and molecular biology as evidence.

I am going to be extremely blunt. Some creationist leaders are known to have lied about their scientific and theological qualifications. I particularly refer to Kent Hovind here. Ken Ham graduated from the same institution I did, in the same year, I even knew some of his friends by sight then. (1976) He has a degree in environmental science, which is better than nothing but it is far from being advanced.

Dr, Duane Gish used posters for "educating" children carrying the legend "Earth's Crust Devoid of Fossils" for a couple of years AFTER it was pointed out that fossils were not found up trees. Dr. Gish has been accused in print of persistent lying by a geologist in Australia and by others as well. So far as I know Dr. Gish and his backers have taken no court action.

Creationism has distortion of a few facts, scientific fraud, strawman, ad hominiem and circular argument, repetition of frequently refuted assertions and straight out lies among it's excuses for evidence.

I see Full Armor of God is with us. If you do watch any of the clips he cites, I suggest you also take a look at the series "Why do people laught at creationists?" where some of the material in these clips is pulled to bits and refuted.

As for the list of scientists, there is also a lot longer list of scientists who do accept evolution as fact and their names are all Stephanie or Steve. How long would it be If they had only included the Johns, Jeans, Georginas and Georges?

You cited Dr. Robert Jastrow, he is the only one of the three I know of. As it happens his name was in the little blue book put out by the Watchtower Society years ago. It was reading this book that made me realise just how false creationism was. Though the late Dr. Jastrow appears to have been a theist his remarks were thoroughly misquoted and distorted by the publishers of that book, which he said himself some years ago.
Guess who's going to Hell?
2008-09-08 05:27:34 UTC
Yeah it is. Despite what those dishonest conmen who call themselves "Christians" would have you think.

Science is inherently honest, if there was something, anything, that could be shown to be definitely false in (for example) the theory of evolution then every scientist on the planet would want be the first to publish it.

Instead all we get are creationists who don't even understand what they're talking about, or the more mendacious ones who do understand what they're talking about but lie to you anyway.

None of them publish in scientific journals, and there's a reason for that...

Yes. It has empirical evidence, was not based on a priori reasoning, explains the facts, is based on proven mechanisms and does not run counter to all the other theories, proceeded by a route of falsification and deverlopment, with certain paradigm shifts, is objective, and tests hypothesis. Basically, it fills Popper's criteria for science (philosopher of science) which I generally trust (except I like empiricism). The alternatives decidedly do NOT fill any of these criteria.

If you feel up to reading more sources, the below are short and easy to read and directly relevant.

I'm Catholic and a scientist, so I know evolution is true and is scientific indeed. The Pope accepts it. Only ignorant fundamentalists don't accept it.

2008-09-08 05:05:07 UTC
Yes it is.

The great thing about scientific experiments and theories is that they are objective, and therefore could care less what someones opinion of it is and isn't changed by it.
2008-09-08 04:54:17 UTC
No. In fact, science can not simply accept the idea of creation by God. So, they need something else to tell people how creation happened. There is nothing else in their hands except the theory of evolution. Human minds can never understand the complexity of creation since God has not revealed it to anyone. Evolution is not at all scientific if we consider its reliability. But some scientists support it for they don't have an alternative theory. No sane human being can accept evolution. It never happened and can never happen. God will reveal it to someone in the distant future and then only, we will be able to understand it through human terms. But science is totally helpless in this matter.

Evolution is a fact, it has been scientifically established. It is all old news, did you just learn how to read?

Why as this in R&S, do you really want a load of nonsense babbled at you. Of course its scientific and 99% of scientists through out the world say so after studying it.
2008-09-08 04:58:32 UTC
Yes. In fact so many sciences have evolution at it's core it's impossible, and stupid, to deny the evidence.

It's as scientific as it gets. It requires hypotheses be subjected to rigorous scientific scrutiny to determine their validity which is why after 150 years of trying creationists have not made any headway in trying to discredit it.

No Not Really, Great List of Videos Full Armor, Merits looking at,

And Happy Human seems to have a problem with anyone who challenges anything contrary to what she 'wants' to believe,

Me thinks she is afraid
2008-09-08 04:59:45 UTC
Not really, I like Full Armors List, I think it deserves some looking into, What is wrong with happy Human ? She afraid of looking into something that may refute what she wishes to be ?

Hmm. I think it deserves an objective examination
2008-09-08 04:49:17 UTC
Yes, there are Scientific Facts about Evolution .

@Full Armor of God : Stop with the scam videos

Changes in genetic materials and the phenotype (the outward appearance and bioogical functions) are proven. Whether that contribute the changes of species is yet to be proven. Therefore, in some degree, that is scientific.

Err, yeah. Evolution is an observed, natural phenomena. It's well explained by the theory of evolution, which is testable, falsifiable, and supported by all available evidence.
2008-09-08 04:45:35 UTC
Yes, dear, the theory of evolution is really, truly scientific.
2008-09-08 04:50:00 UTC
Yes, and it's a lot more provable than many other things you accept without a hitch.

2008-09-08 04:45:39 UTC
Yes, it's really scientific. And you don't have to quit believing in God to accept evolution as solid science; anybody who thinks that is lacking in imagination, at best.

Yes. It is. There isn't any debate on that point. There may be dissension from dumb people, but there is no rational argument to say that it isn't scientific.
