Question:
When God reversed the rotation of the earth in Isaiah 38:8, how did he keep everyone from dying?
2010-07-17 05:28:54 UTC
Earth has a surface speed of about 1000 miles per hour, or 1600 km/h.

An instantaneous reversal would cause instant death for everyone and everything on earth (and would be WAY cooler than a flood).

A gradual reversal would take hours to be undetectable.

Any kind of reversal would mess up weather patterns, temperatures, and would likely mean death for at least a portion of the earth's inhabitants.

And why was this not recorded ANYWHERE ELSE on earth? Seems like something that some people would take note of - ESPECIALLY sun worshipers.

Well I cannot speak for anyone else but as I see it when a phenomena is only observed by one person, that is usually a pretty good clue they are experiencing an altered state of consciousness (or simply outright lying). What is more likely? That a man hallucinated (or told a lie) or that the whole world stopped in it's tracks and no one else on the planet noticed?

@Fuzzy -- if it was only an optical effect or mirage as you suggest then in what way did it have any meaning as a miracle?

You could at least do us the courtesy of including the scripture !

You know - I am continually amazed at the obstinacy of atheists. Here as soon as some problem needs a technological solution, a scientific solution, and this is proposed or explained by scientists you guys lay prostrate to these in utter worship and admiration. But when it comes to God having done something spectacular, you get brain freeze, brain lock.

Does that scripture say that he reversed the rotation of the earth anywhere? No, not even one place. This is utterly and a personal assumption you yourself make.

Have you ever heard of refraction, mirrors, and lenses? Of course not- - you are much too learned for this childish stuff.

Do you know why the sun looks bigger at sundown than at noon?

Have you ever heard of Fata Morganas, mirages? Probably not -

Here we have natural phenomena where things that usually cannot be seen from our vantage point are seen:

" . . . This was observed for the first time in 1596, when a ship under the command of Willem Barents looking for the Northeast passage got stuck in the ice at Novaya Zemlya, and the crew had to endure the polar winter there. They saw their midwinter night ending with the rise of a distorted sun about 2 weeks earlier than expected. It was not until the 20th century that Europeans understood the reason: the real sun had still been under their horizon, but its light rays followed the curvature of the Earth. This effect is often called a Novaya Zemlya mirage."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirage

Would it then be implausible for the Creator, the most imminent scientist and powerful one, to cause the light from the sun to bend and cause the sun to appear in a different position than it really was?

We have no idea of the method, but don't succumb to atheistic mindlessness. It is a brain rot, a disease. If the people who wrote the account said they observed it, then it happened. It is just plain events that were recorded as they happened.

Edit: @Michael Darnell

Just recently in the news a very public UFO sighting was experienced by a great many, and, yet, many already try to puh puh it away. Over the years many such UFO sightings have occurred by reliable sources that really cannot be questioned. Even the Tether Incident of NASA seen on Youtube bears this out.

Where am I going with this, you ask?

UFO's have been observed making from zero to full speed accelerations, 90 degree turns at speeds that would squash any human beings inside. Yet, they do it. They have no rocket engines, yet their speed and control is beyond comprehension.

Beyond comprehension:

If you think you can make a UFO and demonstrate this kind of activity even explain how it works, please do!

Or, do you have to admit that there are things we just don't understand, and cannot explain! If the latter is a fact, then perhaps, do you really think that you can comprehend what the creator does, how he makes his miracles occur all the time?

As I stated. I do not know. All I said is that nowhere does the account include the earth stopping a moment and nobody in the account felt even the tinies of jolts from the earth moving under their feet!

What happened was that something that humans could not explain then or now occurred - if this was done by refraction of the suns rays - is not important for the people then knew it to be a sign from God. They knew it to be extraordinary and in the order of magnitude that they couldn't hope to emulate ever.

On the day the LORD gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the LORD in the presence of Israel: "O sun, stand still over Gibeon, O moon, over the Valley of Aijalon. - Joshua 10:12

Ridiculous to imagine that god could order the sun to stand still. 2 things wrong:

1) wrong concept of sun moving from east to west instead of earth revolving causing day and night;

2) earth not revolving would have major impacts of meteorological, weather, etc;

Therefore, these verses clearly are self evident to be NOT words of divine being.

Apparently the same god that has no option but to invent a hell and have people sent to it, as well as require the execution of an innocent man for redeeming 'sins' of others, somehow was abe to negate angular momentum and inertia to stop the earth with no adverse effects.

Is it just me, or does it seem that "god works in mysterious ways" = "complete cop out"?

NO DOUBT JESUS WAS ONE OF MIGHTIEST MESSENGER AND GOD REVEALED TO HIM HIS WORDS AND THAT HE WAS ONE OF THE BEST MAN EVER BORNED ON EARTH BUT TODAY'S BIBLE IS NOT THE BOOK REVEALED TO JESUS, PEACE BE UPON HIM

1. Bible contains many elements which are either totally fictitious or partly corrupted by someone, the original text is unavailable, so this quote can never be taken as an authentic God's word because Bible itself is not authentic, there are many authors of bible and many versions are available which differ from each other.

2. A some close text to it is present in Islam also but it never say that the rotation will be reverted, it merely say that Sun will APPEAR to rise from west and will set also in west near doomsday(the day of judgment, after the return of Jesus Christ, peace and blessings be upon him). now there is no problem in sun appearing to rise from west because this is proved scientifically that due to refraction of light beam at the boundary of atmosphere and space, the Sun appears to rise early and set down late then the actual period of half rotation. so even if the rotation is not reverted,Sun's visualization can be reverted.

3. And God is almigthy, his orders are followed by every particle, and light beams follow God's order, they can appear to be coming from opposite direction, and Allah have the final answer

4.No thats not lying, because Allah almighty tells that he will give several signs before doomsday, to show human beings that doomsday is coming and if u still do not revert than nobody can save u, and its a sign for those who fear and is a fake event for those who shows doubts, and its not me, its Allah who says so himself in Quran in Surah: Baqrah that he shows sign only to those who believe in him and live there lives with devotion, and He delebrately create more confusions in the mind of those who show doubts.

another verse of Quran which says so is: And they(non believers) had a disease in there hearts and I increased there deseases.

Is this God Almighty we are talking about or some lesser God you have made up in your imagination?

It's really weird how people can doubt that a being that could create the entire universe could not manage something as tiny as this?

It's almost like you don't really believe in God at all?

In which case how is asking this question about an omnipotent being logical at all?

Very weird stuff going on in your head these days TLOJB.
