Question:
If Islam is the true religion as Muslims claim, then which Islam? Sunni, Shia, Sufi ...?

I was born and raised as a Muslim so I consider myself culturally Muslim. But I am sick and tired of Muslims here and there claiming that Islam is the only true religion and that Islam will dominate the world....

I have one question for these people: If God sent down Islam as His true religion, then y is He confusing us with all the sects: Sunni, Shia, Sufi, Alawi, or subsects such as Wahabi, Ismaili....

Which one is real Islam? Don't tell me they are the same. I have done my reading and I know there are fundamental differences between them, especially Sunni and Shia.... Just look at the killing between them in Iraq

I hope you don't mind an answer from a non-muslim. But I liked your question and am reading the Koran (in English) and the Bible, to see what all the fuss is about!

I'm not a Muslim, I have been raised without a religion but in a country with a lot of Christian denominations who claim to be the "true" way to God through Christ.

I was perhaps a "Cultural" christian for a while, but not actually with faith. It's not uncommon for someone to claim to be a Christian because they were baptised as a child but never went to Church.

They just tick it on the census forms. I think this is stupid, and devalues people who do have a faith.

The way I see it is that if I had been born in an Islamic Country, I may well be a "cultural" muslim instead of a cultural Christian.

I could even be culturally Bhuddist depending on where I was born.

Faith would be a bonus, and that comes from within. All the major religions have a basis in common human decency, love and respect. Cultural behavior is "outside" but only God (or Gods?) know your real intentions and feelings.

A British comedian said the big 3 religions (Judaism, Islam and Christianity) who share the same God are like the M40, M42 and M55 motorways...they all lead to Birmingham! (Or Heaven)

It's just you start on a different road depending upon where you lived in the first place!

I don't think the question "Which one is real" (Religions, or denominations within those religions) can be answered by humans.

Surely if we were supposed to know which one to follow, there wouldn't also be native religions in other countries that are difficult to convert because of thousands of years of belief.

Culture is hard to change and religion is tied up with culture.

In the Quran, God says that he divides into tribes and subtribes so that we may know each other. There are good things about all the sects and bad things as well. What their problem is that they don't have any direction nor do they care to get along. What they need is unity by understanding each others pros and cons and a leader to unify them on the basis of their best qualities. The Quran states clearly the importance of Caliphs b/c they lead Muslims in the correct spiritual direction.

In ahadith, it says that in the latter days, the Muslims would be disorganized and away from Islam. There'd be many mosques but no faith and unlearned scholars everywhere. There'd be many sects but only one would be out of the fire. If you are interested in getting back into being a Muslim (assuming you meant by "culturally Muslim" that you aren't very religious), I say you should see for yourself who is closest to following Islam as well.

I'm an Ahmadi Muslim btw; I don't know if you learned anything about Ahmadis when you were growing up but I can tell you we're pretty organized whether or not the rest of the Muslim world like us very much or doesn't consider us Muslim. We have a leader to guide us and many missions in many places to spread Islam peacefully. If you wanna learn anything about us, the site's in my sources but if you don't, that's fine and I hope I was able to address the rest of your questions anyways.

Sunni, Shia, Sufi ...? You forgot Wahhabism. Shia and Sunnis tend to argue more than the other I find. Intolerant: ''Some Christian preachers are like flies..Anytime they see an open window they get in to preach their non-sense'' Are you scared of another viewpoint? Discussions improve relations. Many would consider Islam's teachings nonsense and copying from Christian teachings.

''This question is for Muslims only.'' Why was not that outlined...in the beginning.

Salam Brother.

There is only one Islam, and sects such as Sunni, Shia, Salafi are Haram. The Quran teaches that a Muslim is someone who holds steadfast to the Quran and the teachings of Mohammad at that period of time.

The Glorious Qur’an says: “And hold fast, All together, by the rope Which Allah (stretches out for you), and be not divided among yourselves;” [Al-Qur'an 3:103]

The Glorious Qur’an says: “As for those who divide their religion and break up into sects, thou hast No part in them in the least their affair is with Allah: He will in the end Tell them the truth Of all that they did.” [Al-Qur'an 6:159]

Yes its a fact that there are sects in Islam. But the only one saved is the one following the Quran and the sahih hadith so said the prophet in one sahih hadith. Islam means " surrendering and submitting yourself to Allah in order to acquire peace". This is the religion of all the prophets, the message brought by all prophets.Look around yourself you are sarrouded by objects created by you (humans) for what? to serve yourself. even this computer on which your working is doing the same thing. why do you think God created you? for serving him of course. and his service is called workship. ie any act done according the way God wants us to do. He is our creator and only he knows how his product (creation) should be handled. right. only the maker of this computer you are working on knows how you should handle it. And he provided you with a manual? so also Allah did, thats Quran, if you follow it then you would have served the purpose of your creator and in turn acquire peace in this world and jannah in the hereafter. If you have any questions about the authencity of the quran log on to http://www.allahsquran.com.

Now you know Islam is the only true religion right from Adam to Muhammad (peace be upon them have brought this same mesage) and Allah says " innadeena indallahil islam". indeed ythe only deen acceptable to Allah is Islam. And you like it or not the Quran says that the last day wuill not come until all the humanity beleives.

It is a fact that Muslims today, are divided amongst themselves. The tragedy is that such divisions are not endorsed by Islam at all. Islam believes in fostering unity amongst its followers.

The Glorious Qur’an says:

"And hold fast,All together, by the rope,Which Allah (stretches out for you), and be not divided among yourselves;"

[Al-Qur’an 3:103]

Which is the rope of Allah that is being referred to in this verse? It is the Glorious Qur’an. The Glorious Qur’an is the rope of Allah which all Muslims should hold fast together. There is double emphasis in this verse. Besides saying ‘hold fast all together’ it also says, ‘be not divided’.

Qur’an further says,

"Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger"

[Al-Qur’an 4:59]

All the Muslims should follow the Qur’an and authentic Ahadith and be not divided among themselves.

One may ask such Muslims, "Who was our beloved prophet (pbuh)? Was he a Hanafi or a Shafi, or a Humbali or a Maliki?" No! He was a Muslim, like all the other prophets and messengers of Allah before him.

If anyone poses a Muslim the question who are you, he should say "I am a MUSLIM, not a Sunni or a Shiah or etc..". Surah Fussilat chapter 41 verse 33 says:

"Who is better in speech ,Than one who calls (men) ,To Allah, works righteousness,And says, ‘I am of those,Who bow in Islam (Muslim)?’ "

[Al-Qur’an 41:33]

The Qur’an says "Say I am of those who bow in Islam". In other words, say, "I am a Muslim".

If only all Muslims read the Qur’an with understanding and adhere to Sahih Hadith, Inshallah most of these differences would be solved and we could be one united Muslim Ummah.

May Allah guide all of us through the right path.

I am sorry to say you cannot consider yourself to be culturally muslim if you don't believe in Islam. Some muslims can even claim they don't want to be muslims because of how other muslims behave or treat people. For such muslims I'd like to say to each his/her own. Such people find faults with Islam to hide their own drawbacks and weaknesses. Ask yourself, do you really believe in God and Islam? If you did you wouldn't be asking such silly questions.

Every religion on Earth has different denominations that fall under the umbrella of that religion.

How do the Shia, Sunni, and Sufi denominations of Islam differ from the various Christian denominations, e.g., Lutheran, Baptist, Presbyterian, Episcopal, COGIC, Catholic, etc.? Which is the true Christianity?

Islam is not based on any sects like Sunni,shia..etc..

Islam is based on Quran and Hadith.

why u r worry about those groups...read quran and hadith and follow..that is the real islam

Our beloved prophet didn't teach us about groups..he teach us assemble only under ''the unity of Allah''....Nothing is acceptable with allah, except islam..

Good luck....

Quran-Sunnah-Hadith

we should struggle against bid‘ahs because people say: is this bid‘ah bad? we say no,they say this one? we say no but when lots of bid‘ah start to cover the religion than people start to live religion on bid‘ahs and this is dangerous.

Obediance-disobediance to government

it changes according to government

nothing special about Hz Ali but i would be in the side of him for obediance to government.

sufism did lots of good things for islam but ok it is enogh they should give up their traditions and we should return to our origins because islam rejects a religion coming with tradition as Quran said.

and we can not define our religious identity with hatred. He killed him, this did this.that was in his side.you did this.no these are illogical

Peace be unto you,

I wanna ask you, who was Prophet Muhammad? Sunni, Shias, Alawi, Wahabi, Ismaeli or WHO? He gave us the religion named 'Islam' which was also given by other Prophets to their nations. Qur'an says:

“As for those who divide their religion and break up into sects, you have no part in them in the least: their affair is with Allah: He will in the end tell them the truth of all that they did.” [Qur'an, 6:159]

I never called my self a Sunni or Shia or Wahabi & whoever made their own sect in their religion will have no place in Heaven according to Qur'an they have no connection with Islam because our Religion is to follow Prophet Muhammad & Qur'an not their own man made sect. I always call myself a Proud Muslim.

"Turning unto Him (only); and be careful of your duty unto Him and establish worship, and be not of those who ascribe partners (unto Him); Of those who split up their religion and became schismatics, each sect exulting in its tenets." [Qur'an 30:31-32]

No matter how much they call themselves that we are Shias or Sunnis or Wahabis or Ismaelis, they are disfollowingg God & Prophet's teaching & they will get their price to pay in Hell.

"Then We shall pluck out from every sect whichever of them was most stubborn in rebellion to the Beneficent." [Qur'an 19:69]

"[Ironically] they broke up into sects only after the knowledge had come to them, due to jealousy and resentment among themselves.” [Quran, 42:14]

So we should join the religion of God & his all Prophets. We are belong to their religion. They were Muslims & we are also Muslims. Because Allah said:

“And hold fast, all of you together, by the Rope of Allah and be not divided amongst yourselves.” [Quran 3:103]

"This day have I perfected for you your religion and completed My favor on you and chosen for you Islam as a religion." [Qur'an 5:3]

Thanks,

Hope I answered!

They are all as real as any other.

All religions are just superstitions. None have any more basis in reality than any other. There are no gods.

Actually, the existence of so many religions and religious sects is evidence that there are no gods around to set people straight on who is right. That won't keep all of them from claiming that they are the "true" religion.

islam is not the answer and never will be! It is a false religion of hate and murder. & yes according to the bible, islam is gonna take over and dominate the world for 7 years. Its gonna be horrible!! but at the end of the 7 years, Jesus Christ is gonna put a violent end to islam once and for all and then establish his kingdom here on earth. Praise God! please turn to Jesus!

Praise be to Allaah.

The answer to your question is lengthy and deserves a book to itself. We cannot answer in details here, but we can say the following in brief:

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) told us beforehand that this Ummah would be divided as the previous nations were divided, as stated in the saheeh hadeeth:

Wahb ibn Baqiyyah told us from Khaalid from Muhammad ibn ‘Amr from Abu Salamah from Abu Hurayrah who said: the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The Jews were divided into seventy-one or seventy-two sects, and the Christians were divided into seventy-one or seventy-two sects, and my Ummah will be divided into seventy-three sects.” This was narrated by Abu Dawood in his Sunan, Kitaab al-Sunnah, Baab Sharh al-Sunnah.

It was reported from ‘Awf ibn Maalik who said: the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The Jews were divided into seventy-one sects, one of which is in Paradise and seventy are in the Fire. The Christians were divided into seventy-two sects, seventy-one of which are in the Fire and one is in Paradise. By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, my Ummah will be divided into seventy-three sects, one of which will be in Paradise and seventy-two will be in the Fire.” It was said, O Messenger of Allaah, who are they? He said, “Al-Jamaa’ah.”

Sunan Ibn Maajah, no. 3982.

What is meant by al-Jamaa’ah is the ‘aqeedah and actions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and his Companions.

Among the sects that claim to belong to Islam are those who are misguided with regard to the Unity of Allaah (Tawheed) and His Names and Attributes; they say that everything that exists is Allaah and that He is incarnate or present in His creation – glorified be He far above what they say. On the contrary, He is above His heavens, settled on His throne, distinct from His creation.

Others are misguided with regard to eeman (faith) and say that deeds are separate from faith and that faith does not increase or decrease. The correct view is that faith consists of words and deeds; it increases when one does acts of obedience to Allaah and decreases when one commits sin.

Others are misguided by their declaring that the person who commits sin goes beyond the pale of Islam and is doomed to eternity in the Fire. The correct view is that the one who commits a major sin – apart from shirk and al-kufr al-akbar – does not go out of Islam.

Others are misguided with regard to the issue of al-qadaa’ wa’l-qadar (divine decree), and said that man has no choice in what he does. The correct view is that man has freedom of will on the basis of which he will be called to account and will bear the consequences of his deeds.

Others are misguided with regard to the Qur’aan, and say that it is created. The correct view is that it is the words of Allaah, revealed not created.

Others are misguided with regard to the Sahaabah, whom they revile and denounce as kaafirs even though they are the companions of the Prophet among whom the Wahy (Revelation) was revealed, and they are the most knowledgeable and the most devoted in worship among this Ummah, and they strove in jihaad for the sake of Allaah and Allaah supported this religion through them – may Allaah be pleased with them all.

And there are other groups who deviated from the path of Islam and innovated matters in the religion of Allaah; each of them rejoices in what they have, but they have followed the ways of the Shaytaan and gone against the words of Allaah (interpretation of the meaning):

“And verily, this is My straight path, so follow it, and follow not (other) paths, for they will separate you away from His path. This He has ordained for you that you may become Al-Muttaqoon (the pious)” [al-An’aam 6:153]

We ask Allaah to make us among the followers of the Sunnah who will be saved from the Fire, and to admit us to Paradise among the righteous. May Allaah bless our Prophet Muhammad.
