Hi all, im trying to get others opinions on why we have God myths, what is their function? What element do they hold?

I know every family/ religion,ECT have their own "myths" but why?

I am supposed to ask my peers ( any adult) these debatable questions, but I had major surgery on my foot/ankle and I can not get to my peers. Would anyone like to help me answer this, as a peer? please and thank you! Hope you all have a great day!

Because long ago we knew him quite well. And then we turned to sin a didnt see him so we assumed he didn't exist. We gave into our human wants. We didn't want to answer a god on his terms so we created idols in the hope that they could replace him. All through history there's been at least one man who was righteous, and God spoke through him. Them god started telling him things. How the world began and other privileged information. The phrophets preached about a messiah and preformed miracles, and they people turned to God. But soon, human nature set in again and they turned back to their idols. Since the first sin though, we were all worthy of hell. God loved us too much to let us go, but he couldn't just save us, cause of what we did. He had created rules that he himself had to obey. So he sent his son, another form of himself, and he sacrificed him so we didn't have to spend eternity in hell. But Jesus concoured death and rose again! A true reflection of Gods power. He told us how to live and that we mearly had to believe with all our heart soul and mind what Jesus did and that he was the son of God. But some how that was too much to ask. People believe they can save themselves by being a good person (in their own opinion which in funny cause they aren't the one who saved them). They get mad at people who believe in Christ for saying "there is only one way and you cannot save yourself." now their saying their never even was a God! That the world created itself and Christians are a buck of nut jobs! Alright. That's fine. The only readlson I can't " Keep my religion to myself" is because it's such great news! It's like telling the world a flood is coming and we have to get into the boats NOW! But it's too inconvenient to get to the boats because it would cramp their lifestyle. they can't see the flood coming so they dont believe it is, and how can I keep something like that to myself? I want to help you and I'm pleading with you to get in the boat, but you won't. WHY WON'T YOU???

Hey, MissyMae—

I'm not really a peer. I'm old. But here's what I believe. Humankind has something in their genetic makeup, or inherent in some way, that predisposes most of them (even some of the really smart ones) to believe that there is something bigger and better informed about the whole enchilada than us. Dawkins calls it the "God Delusion". Others call it the God Gene. In any event, it is something that hasn't seemingly been selected for elimination if evolution is actually doing it's job. Atheists have been counting on the eventual demise of religion...that man would just some day "get it" like "they" do.

What I think it boils down to, is that old habits die hard. And maybe for a reason that is higher than us. Don't know if you believe in God, kiddo...I certainly didn't between the ages of 9 and 28. Full on atheist anti-Christian proponent back then. Not particularly schooled. Didn't finish college, but I have a significantly above average IQ. I'm more of a common sense sort of person. I think that God is a delegator. Free will is a gift....a tool. Like a shovel, we can dig wells, plant fruit trees and vegetable gardens, or we can hit someone over the head, killing them, steal their food, and bury the corpse. We make the choices. We navigate the road. Lots of forks on this road. With every wrong turn, we can go further and further away from where the delegator would want us to be. Personally, I chose Christ. Or Christ chose me. It was like a light came on and the confusing nonsense of the Bible just started to make sense. Like I broke the code with a cryptography that was somehow assimilated over the course of a few days.

My best hopes and prayers for you, sweetheart. : )

A begining to your answer would be - why did you take the mythology class?

(assuming it was not required)

One of the drives we have as human beings is to find meaning in the Universe

There is a philosophy called Existentialism which examines this drive -

the notion is that when we discover that the world is purposeless, we suffer "existential despair" and the resolution proposed is to conciously create our own meaning and purpose.

This is in essence what religion does for us.

Those who are honest with themselves will notice that even in embracing an inherited religion they still give their own meaning -- we are always testing the morality of "scripture" and reinterpreting it to our inate understanding of "right"

It's to give people purpose in their lives, I think. It used to be a means of explaining how things are the way the are (with the Greek & Norse gods, for example), but by now we should all know better, that things can be scientifically explained.

The function is basically to control the ignorant and easily duped. I'd say it's working pretty well.

There's only one God and He's no Myth...

Because there is actually some substance to them.
