Question:
Is atheism really not that much different from a religion?
2009-05-01 00:24:44 UTC
Does it not take as much 'faith' not to believe in god as to believe in it? Atheism is the belief that there is no god. nothing more then that. Science is what 'god' is to most Atheist that is their belief. Sure Atheists don't go to church or anything as of such but they still get together for a joint reason.

Atheism really doesn't fit the definition of 'religion' but it is still close to one in several ways is it not?

Someone told me that atheism is not faith. No one knows for sure whether there is a God or not. We all have our beliefs. When we have one belief, we think that that is our truth. It's called "faith" and they have "faith" in evolution (some, not all) they have "faith" that there is no God.

Everyone that has a belief, has faith.

Fred hit the proverbial nail on the proverbial head. I don't believe in Santa Claus, pots of gold at the end of the rainbow, or some supernatural being that will do what I ask if I believe and have faith. By being an atheist, I don't have the luxury of blaming some super being for what is wrong in my life. I have to take responsibility for my actions. That is the one thing I have seen with many "believers" of many different faiths. When they fail at something, or something bad happens, it was "God's will." Sad way to live one's life. If things go badly for me, it is usually the result of a bad decision I made, not because some superpower is ticked off at me. I don't have faith that there isn't a "God." Just as Santa Claus, it's a nice theory, but someday when man decides to not follow superstitions, he will discover that we are nothing more than another animal species roaming a planet. We may be a little smarter than other animals, but we are still just a link in the food chain.

Religion is:

a. Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe.

b. A personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship.

It's nothing like a religion at all.

It's not organized, it doesn't believe in illogical things like supernatural powers. atheists don't "get together", atheists don't brainwash people into believing in illogical things like heaven and earth. Atheists don't offer up prayers into the sky, they don't sing silly songs of praise for supernatural beings.

Atheists don't need "faith" in anything! Atheists don't have faith that there is no god, they know that there is no god, that doesn't take faith, just simple knowledge!

It's nowhere near close to a religion!

No. Atheism isnt a positive proposition but a denial of one. Whereas theism is a positive proposition that is defined as; a belief in one God or many. Therefore, there are going to be many possibilities with the positive proposition since it is such a broad statement rather than simply just stating a negative. In simpler terms: If your dad tells you stories of bears on the mountain near where you live; youre going to theorize everything they do, where they look like, what they eat, etc based on the information and beliefs you have at hand and develop and what you can observe of them on your own. Whereas if your parents always told you there were no bears on the mountain, you would be in denial and never consider the possibilities. Denial allows for a much simpler carefree existence whereas belief requires work, thought, effort, struggle, and observation allowing for more possibilities with the appearance of subjectivity.

Atheism is *not* a religion.

It is a disbelief, a lack of faith, which is not the same as faith of no God. You don't call "bald" hair color.

And, no, science is *not* god to atheists. Sure, most of us use science as basis for knowledge but we don't consider science as deity. That's ridiculous.

Take some Philosophy class and you will learn.

I don't read the Origin Of Species to seek moral guidance, I'm not spending my Sundays going to an atheist church praying to nothing, I'm not going door to door telling people that they shouldn't believe in God, I'm not thanking Darwin for everything good in my life and I'm not condemning people to eternal pain for not doing what I believe is right.

I use as much faith to disbelieve in God as I do for Leprechauns, Fairies, Unicorns and so on.

In a close minded world sure, but faith and reason are two completely different things.

Actually, atheists DO have churches, which proves the point that atheism is a religion.

A FALSE religion, just as the Bible predicted.

No. You need gods to have a religion. No gods, no religion. Get it?

I hate to break it to you but "I don't believe you" isn't faith.
