Depends. Former Texas governor Perry used to brag about Texas being the best state and once supported secession. Yet, on several occasions, he came to California to "shop" for businesses that might want to move there. Well, after several trips to CA, he got Toyota's HQ, and about 1000 employees, to move there. Two thousand employees remained in CA to staff various branches of the automaker in CA.

Yes, to those who live there. Each of our states in America has features that appeal to the inhabitants, residents and citizens, whether cultural or otherwise, and they can easily cite the sties to visit and enjoy, museums, monuments, national parks, etc.

I live here (Texas) and I would ask what criteria you would use. The state has many pluses to it, and we also our share of negatives (most of whom can be found in the state capitol complexes and the governor's mansion, but I digress...). We have a long warm season, plus August!, and several large growing urban areas with much to do. We have a diverse population that is becoming more diverse over time and an interesting restaurant culture is emerging. One demographer speaks of Bavarian-Korean taco trucks, but I haven't found one yet.....still looking. The larger urban areas are quite progressive unlike many of the small towns and rural areas, but we figure those small towns and rural areas, plus the politicos in the state capitol should be hitting the 1980s pretty soon now. There is quite the variety of humidity levels ranging from swampy in and around the Gulf to the low desert and high desert. Yes, the Chihuahuan Desert cuts a swath into Texas. The scenery ranges from ruggedly beautiful to flat as pancake where you can see 3 days away.

One place near San Angelo in West Texas looks like one of the Mars landings--try and top that--Mars on the Concho (River), or away from the Concho!! We have many aliens both from other countries and in Marfa, we have extraterrestrials. Who knows, we may lead the way to having Earth join the United Federation of Planets what with Vulcans, Andorians, Tellerites and a host of others around, but let's not get ahead of ourselves (Oh, btw, Gene Roddenberry was a Texan as are Michael Dorn--Worf and Brent Spiner--Data)). The economy is in pretty good shape and it seems more people move here with each passing year.

Other than that, it's a pretty typical large American state along with California and Florida (2 other states with many people as well).

That's a totally subjective question. Everybody has different criteria for deciding what makes a great state and what doesn't. Some people might think it's a great state for certain reasons other people might think it sucks. What kind of question is that?

I'm a Texan, and I love Texas.

A lot of good people (except in high school)

Great museums

Amazing Mexican restaurants

Best hospitals in the U.S

Great historical places to visit

Nice amusement parks (Six Flags Over Texas, Zero Gravity Amusement Park, Fiesta Texas, etc.)

Good colleges

The only thing I don't like about Texas is that it's very hot during the summer.

Having visited most of the states in the US, I would say that Maine is the "best" - pristine, gorgeous wilderness (including forests, mountains, meadows, rivers and lakes, and a breathtaking coastline), friendly, honest, hardworking people, it's incredibly clean, sparsely populated so there is little to no urban blight, very little crime when compared to most other states, the standard of living is relatively high, and large portions of the state are protected areas. The only downsides are that it's fairly expensive and that due to the low population there really isn't a whole lot to do. Maine is slightly larger than Ireland, but Ireland's population is many times larger and thus the population density is much higher. Portland isn't really a very memorable place. Neither is Augusta, though Lewiston was quite picturesque and quaint. North Carolina is the best Southern state, Minnesota the best Midwestern state, New Mexico the best Southwestern, and Washington the best Western state.

Possibly.

Diversity, enthusiastic citizens, pride, good economy, good jobs, granting Constitutional Rights to citizens, people moving there from restrictive States like California, many factors add up to it being a far better than average State.

I've only been to 31 of the 50 states, so I can't say for sure, but Texas is a pretty good place to live and work. Texas seems to really try to do what it takes to solve problems. The Katy Freeway through Houston is a good example. Its the widest highway in the world, and it was built through the middle of the city.

Housing and cost of living in general is low, wages are decent, and there is no state income tax

No, because there's no such country as America. That's the name of the large continental mass & related islands that's most of the western hemisphere. It has 36 countries with 1B+ people. Among them is one increasingly dysfunctional country called the UNITED STATES of which Texas is a part. Since the U.S. is nowhere near the best "state" (in the sense of a nation), there's no way that Texas can be the best anything in America.

Latinos have passed whites as the largest ethnic group in California in 2015.

California, in 2015, white population was 38%.

There are better things to argue about because "the best state in America" is obviously going to be different for each person, since it's a matter of opinion and people live in 50 different states, most will probably say their own state is the best

It's a great state. California used to be, but it's too messed up.

Having lived in 7 states and visited the other 43, with Texas being one of the 7 I say NOPE

Texas, like all states, has good points and bad points

Of the 7 states Texas rates right in the middle
