Question:
Why does the Jehovah’s Witness Bible translate Acts 11:26 as “the disciples were by divine providence called Christians”?

I can't find that translation of divine providence in any other Bible?

The New World Translation is a johnny-come-lately fraud translated (actually just modified) by 4 anonymous guys that didn't know Greek or Hebrew. I've been a Christian for 4 decades and have always used the KJV. When words were added to the original Greek or Hebrew to add clarity, those words are put in italics to identify them as not in the original text. I have a Strong's Exhaustive Concordance and Hebrew and Greek dictionary's included so I can look up any word and judge the translation myself. The word translated "called" is from the Greek word #5537 "xrematizo" which has 3 meanings. The JW's chose meaning #2 "to teach from Heaven" when all other translations chose meaning #3 "to receive a name or title". Again, the translators of the New World Translation were rank armatures and made many mistakes.

Read the book Truth In Translation by Dr Jason Beduhn. He is a religious scholar who knows the Bible languages also. He is not a JW but still praises their translation as best. About the only criticism that he has with our Bible is that we have the name Jehovah in the New Testament. We explain why we do that in the introduction of our Bible. Many scholars agree with him, that the NWT is good. Interestingly, one scholar gets quoted by our oposers, and that one is criticizing the NWT. But that is an old quote, and the scholar critical of our Bible changed his mind and later praised the NWT.

I hate to be the party pooper, but according to The Chicago Manual of Style, the standard by which all editing is judged, Jehovah's Witness are properly termed "Jehovah's Witnesses," and the article, "the," is superfluous. In addition, the expression "a Jehovah's Witness," is also incorrect. This would be the equivalent of saying "a Harry's son." The proper way to put this would be "one of Jehovah's Witnesses." This has been a burr under my saddle for decades.

I don't know what Bibles you are using, here are three Bibles where Christians is used.

Catholic Douay-Rheims Bible

Acts 11:26

And they conversed there in the church a whole year; and they taught a great multitude, so that at Antioch the disciples were first named Christians.

King James Bible

Acts 11:26

And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

American Standard Bible

Acts 11:26

and when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that even for a whole year they were gathered together with the church, and taught much people, and that the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

The Holy bible says:

(Acts 11:26) "And the disciples were CALLED Christians first in Antioch"

*There are different views on who exactly called the disciples christians at Antioch.

Was it the new converts of the church established in Antioch or the unbelievers living in Antioch who called the disciples christians?

Why would believers ( possibly Jewish Grecian converts v:19-21?) in Antioch not include themselves as being called christians ?

Whatever view one as has on this -- the plain fact is that it was NOT by divine providence from God the disciples were first called christians either by unbelievers or believers of the Lord Jesus Christ (v:17)

Besides doesn't this rendering of (Acts 11:26) in the NWT expose the JWs as FALSE witnesses of Jehovah?

If the disciples were by divine providence from Jehovah called christians then they couldn't of been witnesses/believers of Jehovah !! So the JWs and their NWT lose both ways on this matter.

When Paul was before King Agrippa (Acts 26:1) he shared his testimony of Jesus Christ to the king (v:13-18) and the gospel (v:23)

King Agrippa's response to Paul was:

(Acts 26:28) "Almost thou persuadest me to be a CHRISTIAN"

*Isn't it interesting it was a unbeliever (king Agrippa) who used the term christian and not Paul ? btw-Agrippa never got saved and became a christian anyway.

*It might surprise many believers (christians!) that Paul never called believers christians in the book of Acts or his epistles. But he does use the words saints, brethren and believers etc,

Peter writing to the 'elect" (1Pet 1:2) Was the elect the circumcision Jews Peter preached to ? (Gal 2:7-9)

Was Peter telling the 'elect' (Jews) this only ?

(1Pet 4:16) "Yet if any man suffer as a CHRISTIAN"

*Ok, I'm not saying its wrong for believers (whether Jews or Gentiles) to call themselves christians.

*When a person becomes saved by believing the gospel of their salvation (1Cor 15:1-4 & Eph 1:12-13) the Spirit of Christ is inside a believer (Rom 8:10) and Jesus Christ becomes their Lord and Saviour (Tit1:4)

(Eph 1:4) "According as he (Christ) hath chosen us IN HIM"

We are in Christ and he in us -- CHRIST-IAN - in Christ.

* This is ALL bad news for a JW. They aren't saved and do not belong to God.

(Rom 8:9) "Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is NONE of this"

* There NWT is a corrupt perversion of the holy scriptures and is not the word of God so avoid it !

The New World Translation is the only major translation in print which does not provide the names of the translators, scholars and others involved in the translation. The name of the person who was the "lead scholar" for project has become public knowledge, and it has been proven (in court) that he has no knowledge of Greek or Hebrew (the original languages in which the Bible was written.) NOr has anyone been able to find a scholar who worked on the project.

As such, you will find many places where the NWT varies from all other translations. Places where it drops whole phrases, adds things that are not there, translates passage in ways that are totally different then all translation, etc. There were no scholars involved in the translation.

As someone who can read the original Greek and (with references) stumble through the Hebrew, I have seen 100's poor and/or just totally wrong translations in the NWT. It is heavily edited and slanted to match the teachings of the JWs.

Why did they translate this verse very differently from anyone else? It is probably because the JWs do NOT believe in using the word "Christians" to refer to the follower of Christ. So they are going to somehow alter any verse that using the word "Christian", and then use their different translation to argue that we should not use the word Christians.

It does not surprise me that this verse read different in their translation then any other. It says something they want not to believe, so they will mis-translate it.

In the Christian Greek Scriptures, the verb used in connection with the new name, generally translated “were called,” is always associated with something supernatural, oracular, or divine. A number of Biblical lexicographers and commentators state that a verb used at Acts 11:26 implies divine direction or revelation meaning “to utter an oracle,” “divinely intimate,” or “to give a divine command or admonition, to teach from heaven.” Since Jesus’ followers were called Christians “by divine providence,” is used rather than simple "called" because the Greek word tells us that the name is more than just being called by others but that it is of a divine origin.

Similar renderings are found in Robert Young’s Literal Translation of the Holy Bible, Revised Edition, of 1898; The Simple English Bible, of 1981; and Hugo McCord’s New Testament, of 1988.)

Regarding the use of verbs, it should be noted:

Verbs are the most important part of speech in the Hebrew language. The simplest verbal form is the third person singular masculine of the perfect state; this is the form found in lexicons. The three consonants of this form usually constitute the root. The root is ordinarily triliteral in structure, that is, made up of three consonants, the usual arrangement in Semitic languages. Such triliteral roots serve as the source to which nearly all other words in the language can be traced.

Only Islam is 100% 'Divine' and the Quran alone is 100% Gods word.

This is why the Quran talks more about Moses and Jesus than about prophet Muhammad (peace be upon all).

divine providence called Christians”? Roman Catholic sign of the cross is upside down, done with five fingers instead of three, is done from left to right instead of right to left, etc. (basically inviting demons). Antichrist's Third Temple will have 8 chambers: a chamber per main religion; antichrist will be crowned in this temple; during crowning, he won't read the "belief prayer" correctly (rejecting Christ and acknowledging himself); when he will take his gloves off to make sign of the cross incorrectly (just for show), many people will see his big nails and will reject him; Patriarch (who will be crowning him) will say that this is the antichrist; antichrist will kill him. Also, antichrist will kill those priests who disagree with him at the 8th "wolf" Council; others will worship him when a bird dies at his feet. Roman Catholics, Satanists, and Buddhists use the same mudras; if you see these mudras on an icon, then it's not Orthodox icon; Orthodox icon has IC XC symbol (Jesus Christ). Roman Catholics pay drunks and prostitutes to pose for icons; passions of drunks and prostitutes transfer to those who pray to these images. Normal Orthodox icons are inspired by the Holy Spirit. Gaad in Ruski = Satan; hence, Americans = blasphemers because they always say: "Oh, my god!". Santa (word for Saint in Satanic languages) = Satan; hence, Spanish + Italian + Portuguese = blasphemers. Anathema to Satanic languages; triple anathema. Learn Church Slavonic; no curses in it; curses = prayer to Satan. All religions except Orthodoxy worship Satan. On bread for communion: IC XC NIKA (Jesus Christ Conquers) plus cross = Orthodox; hexagram plus Dusha Maya = antichrist. Jews and Muslims pray head down (either standing, bowing, or kneeling); this is Satanic prayer. Orthodox look into the eyes of icon; energy goes their way; they get healed; head and shoulders come together to reject Satan slowly and then fast to normal showing allegiance to Christ and not the devil. Hands cannot be on groin or behind back; either put them crossing each other on chest (right over left) or just by your sides. Legs together so that a demon doesn't run underneath your legs. Clergy who will not "put Buddhist icons and serve antichrist's blood" will be killed; only 7 churches will be left as Pelageya of Ryazan predicted. In 2006 and at other meetings, fake patriarchs and bishops signed a bunch of documents betraying Orthodoxy by saying that all religions worship the same Supreme Being; triple anathema; don't let heretics tell you what to do. America will be last country to switch to Euro. Three big earthquakes will shake the three superpowers; 1st big earthquake in Russia; 2nd (bigger one) in China; 3rd (biggest of the three) will be in America. NATO will nuke Ukraine to blame Russia for it; then NATO will nuke Russia from Scandinavia. China will attack Russia; but will not get past Ural Mountains; bio-genetic weapon will be used against Chinese soldiers (they will run back to China and hide in closets in fear) and weather weapon will freeze Siberia to - 200 Celcius; stadium-size chunks of unmeltable ice will fall from the lower sky (because when rockets go into higher sky they bring this ice down to lower sky). Russia will destroy Turkey and America. China will have a hole across the whole country to the abyss (because of another super weapon used to stop Chinese aggression); radiation from this hole will be massive; Chinese will try to keep quiet about it; a lot of people will fall into this hole.

Scientists don't see dinosaurs because of radiation. Only Eurasia and Alaska (both without coasts) will remain after demons blow up Antarctica (which surrounds the flat earth) and Greenland melts. Move to Ural Mountains or inland Alaska. Sionists wanted war between Russia and Germany from June 11th to October 11th on their holidays because (666 times 3)+(6 times 3) = 2016 (in their twisted logic).

Tube people = demons. Clones = demons. Human costumes that demons wear = demons. Dinosaurs and 666ed people have triple stranded DNA; normal person can't swallow 666ed food (designed for 666ed people). Demons live inside clones. Bacteriologist Alexandre Yersin (who discovered Bubonic plague) is depicted on the Shroud of Turin. There is another shroud (Shroud of Milan) on which blasphemer Yosef (who was crucified on a pole in 1066 AD) is depicted. Menachem Mendel Schneerson, Lenin (el=deity in Hebrew, nine = no in German; so, when chanted repeatedly is blasphemy against the Creator), and Yosef were possessed by Azazel; now, Rico Cortes is possessed by Azazel.

WW3 happens; 7% of people will be left; after people are tired of war, they will elect the antichrist as one world leader; don't vote. ISIS stands for Israeli Secret Intelligence Service. Next false flag: Statue of Liberty in order to attack Iran; one big shake, one giant step forward, one giant collapse. Move away from coasts as nukes will go off in the ocean (at where tectonic plates meet; result: megatsunamis 1km high).

Wear natural clothing so that if a bomb goes off it won't stick to the body as fast as synthetic clothes. All metal will be burned for fuel; so, save knives, crowbars, shovels, wood-burning stoves, etc. Also, save cloth/fabric/textile to cover the wounds and diseases.

Eat natural food because nanochips, cells of aborted fetuses, bug DNA, and other poisons are in food that is commonly sold; reject vaccines, medical care, medicine, etc. because nanochips are administered thru IVs, implants, fillings, etc. If 1000-1500 nanochips are in your right hand, then you can't make proper Orthodox sign of the cross with the right hand; last mercy for you then will be to cut the hand off.

Seraphim of Sarov and Sergiy of Radonezh will be resurrected after WW3 for a short time; Seraphim of Sarov will show the new Ruski Tsar who will fight the antichrist for about 2 years and 8 months. Those who go see Seraphim of Sarov will be healed of their infirmities/illnesses/sicknesses/ diseases; if you want to see him then, hurry because he won't stay longer than a few weeks.

Earth is flat; stands on 3 pillars (the Most Holy Trinity); pillars stand on water at zero Kelvin. Zodiac is planetary prison of demons; don't believe in horoscopes or you'll exhibit the traits of the trapped demons. Most thoughts and dreams are from demons; demons never do good. Sleep fully clothed; pray the Jesus prayer. Pray to your guardian angel to have normal sleep.

Humans were created about 7525 years ago. Ruski Orthodox Christian Vyacheslav Krasheninnikov was the last prophet before Enoch and Elijah return to preach against the antichrist.

Birds participate in time creation. It's a sin to kill birds. Dinosaurs live under our level. They will get out through sinkholes and lakes. To kill them, go for their nerves. Save the birds; but kill the dinosaurs. First dinosaur will come out of Volga River in Russia.

Demons grow human skin (from a sample taken during abduction) and put it on so as to look like us. Demons will invite people to be healed inside their UFOs; those who go will be like zombies after. Gov't provides demons with diamonds and allows demons to abduct people. If you're being abducted, slowly pray the Jesus prayer.

Don't panic. Demons use diamonds and souls to power their UFO craft. The bigger the diamond, the more it lasts. Demons have 4 UFO bases: 1)Moon 2)Inside fake mountain Kailash in Tibet 3)In lake Baikal in Russia 4)In Atlantis which is underneath the Mariana Trench in Pacific Ocean. There are no aliens. Nobody lives on other planets.

Airplanes that go down are hit by demons because they need the airspace to fight Jesus. Antichrist is pale with red eyes. He's possessed by Satan since he's 12 years old. He flies very fast; deceived people will say that "Christ is here; Christ is there". Sometimes, he wears blue robe over left shoulder while red robe is underneath. He wears gloves to hide long nails. He's surrounded by demons who appear as angels of light. Antichrist will trick people to believe that he can do mountain moving and resurrection (using holograms); fire from the sky is easy (considering the gases from pollution in the atmosphere).

Don't go into a UFO to be healed by demons. Green 666 is given by isotope rays on wrist or forehead when people stretch hands to receive small plastic grey card with no name on it (World Passport). Police will microchip and isotope ray people on the highways. Microchipped people will be influenced by computers to take grey plastic card; but when they do, 666 is given. Food stores will isotope ray people too. Antichrist will also release prisoners to mark people. Reject 666 at all cost because it leads to permanent hell.

If you're about to be marked, pray the Jesus prayer. Hide with Orthodox Christians to escape 666; leave all electronics behind so that antichrist's minions can't track you. Burn documents because they're from Satan. Give to charity in the name of Archangel Michael; he rescues people from temporary hell twice a year (or brings them up a level, that is, to a level with less punishment; eventually, people are freed). Feed the pigeons; when pigeons bow down, people are saved from temporary hell. Forgive me.

I am so glad you asked this question because I've learned something new - and useful - by reading all the answers from Jehovah's Witnesses. This doesn't happen very often, but I must concede that the New World Translation has the correct rendering in Acts 11:26, that the disciples were first called Christians (in Antioch circa A.D. 45 - 47) by DIVINE PROVIDENCE.

It is true that most other translations simply say "they were called Christians." The ESV Study Bible notes say this: “The fact that the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch probably reflects a label applied by the unbelieving public in Antioch and shows that the disciples were beginning to have an identity of their own apart from other Jews.” See Acts 26:28 where King Agrippa says to Paul “In a short time would you persuade me to be a Christian?”

However, I am more inclined to agree with this comment in Insight Volume 1 page 440 on the name Christians: It was first in Syrian Antioch that Christ’s followers became known as Christians. It is most unlikely that the Jews first styled Jesus’ followers “Christians” (Greek) or “Messianists” (Hebrew), for they would not reject Jesus as being the Messiah, or Christ, and then tacitly recognize him as the Anointed One, or Christ, by stamping his followers “Christians.” Some think the heathen population may have nicknamed them Christians out of jest or scorn, but the Bible shows that it was a God-given name; they “were by divine providence called Christians.”—Ac 11:26.

I fear that translations such as the KJV, NASB, ESV and NIV have failed to pick up on the subtle but important meaning of the Greek verb "khre·ma·tiʹzo."
2017-01-26 09:08:55 UTC
It's to do with the verb for 'to be called', or 'to be named' - (χρηματίζω - chrématizó). It originally meant to be revealed by an oracle, hence the connection to the divine. It later came to mean to name oneself from one's public business' (Polybius, Diodorus, Plutarch, others), or in general use, to receive a name, title, or to be called.

You will get ignorant people arguing it is always connected with the divine, but this is not the case in Romans 7:3 - 'So then, if she has sexual relations with another man while her husband is still alive, she is called (χρηματίσει) an adulteress'.

You are correct, it is not in Acts 11:26.

The rendering found in the New World Translation used by JW 's is in harmony with the original Greek text as others on here have stated. The word used here meant to give a divine command or admonition, to teach from heaven. To be divinely commanded, admonished, instructed to be the mouthpiece of divine revelations, to promulgate the commands of God. So it wasn't by man that the disciples were called Christians, it was by God that they were now called Christians.

For those on here criticizing the NWT Bible, you should be wondering why the translators of your Bibles didn't translate the passage correctly to harmonize with the Greek text.

Charles whatever his name is stole bits of Gods Words from the Bible, altered it, and then translated it to fit his wicked agenda. Its not based on the Word of God, its based on lies and deceit to get many lost souls unknowingly sent to hell. NWT book its deliberately "translated" to deny the Trinity and everything the Word represent. JW do not have a Bible, they have a satanic NWT book.

King James Translation: (Acts 11:26)

And when he had found him, he bought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people . And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch

Called Christians by Divine Providence

For a whole year, Barnabas and Saul “taught quite a crowd, and it was first in Antioch that the disciples were by divine providence called Christians.” It is unlikely that the Jews were the first to call Jesus’ followers Christians (Greek) or Messianists (Hebrew), for they rejected Jesus as the Messiah, or Christ, and therefore would not tacitly recognize him as such by calling his followers Christians. Some think that the heathen population may have nicknamed them Christians in jest or out of scorn. The Bible, however, shows that the name Christians was God-given.—Acts 11:26.

In the Christian Greek Scriptures, the verb used in connection with the new name, generally translated “were called,” is always associated with something supernatural, oracular, or divine. Scholars thus render it “to utter an oracle,” “divinely intimate,” or “to give a divine command or admonition, to teach from heaven.” Since Jesus’ followers were called Christians “by divine providence,” it is possible that Jehovah directed Saul and Barnabas to give the name.

The new name stuck. Jesus’ disciples could no longer be mistaken for a sect of Judaism, from which they were quite distinct. By about 58 C.E., Roman officials knew very well who the Christians were. (Acts 26:28) According to the historian Tacitus, by 64 C.E., the name was current among the masses in Rome too.

While there are problems with the NWT, this is not one of them. If you used the Sword Bible program you would have access to many Bible versions. One is the YLT, done by Robert Young who tried to do exactly what the original text stated.

His translation is: "26 and having found him, he brought him to Antioch, and it came to pass that they a whole year did assemble together in the assembly, and taught a great multitude, the disciples also >>>were divinely called first in Antioch Christians<<<."

Here, of course, it can depend upon what kind of text was translated from since there are various kinds with small variations. The KJV uses the Textus Receptus.

The NWT Greek codex, text, has the word in verse 26 of Krematisai, (sorry I do not have Greek alphabet) this is translated as >styled divinely< thus the NWT translates as it should according to their Greek text. They use this, quoting, " Westcott and Hort text, after its editors Brooke Foss Westcott (1825–1901) and Fenton John Anthony Hort (1828–1892)."

Thus, while these translators have several enemies claiming they took liberties, all I know is that this is not a text made by or connected to the JWs.

About the YLT translation, this is found, "Young used the Textus Receptus (TR) and the Majority Text (MT) as the basis for his translation."

If you are interested in serious Bible study, you can find two Interlinear Greek English Bibles, the Diaglott and the New World Interlinear as pdf files on the net. There you can go into the nitty-gritty and see why and how at times things were translated as they are.

The Textus Receptus Interlinear might be available online. I do not know of a pdf file.

Comment: Translations:

I have the NIV at home, and the NWT.

Unfortunately, I have found, and a Dr. Walter Veith seems to agree with this, that the NIV contains many serious flaws. Its rendering is very nice. But, some of the translations give people a very wrong idea about some dogma.

The NWT also has a very nice way of rendering things; it is easy to understand. On the plus side, it has added God's name in some places in the NT. Unfortunately, this is also its main problem since it can be shown that some of those places are supposed to be our Lord, Christ.

If one knows where the problems exist, it is a very good translation. Otherwise, it too may give a very wrong idea about some dogma. (BTW, I agree with their John 1:1 rendering.)

The correct version of Acts 11:26 is  "And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch."

There are 100's poor and/or just totally wrong translations in the NWT. It is heavily edited and slanted to match the teachings of the Jaydubs.

You won't, the JW are a cult, they made up their own version of the Bible.

Several issues that the JW's have with the Christian Bible...

1) What about the JW's modifying John 1:1 from ‘…was God to ‘…was 'a god' (for grammatical reasons which of course changed the meaning of the verse). Again the statement that Jesus was the only begotten Son of the Father Is stated again in John 1:14

2) The earth will last forever. ‘New Earth’ as stated in Isaiah 65:17

“For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth;

And the former shall not be remembered or come to mind.

The current world is passing away because of sin

1 John 2:17

And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

Also ..

Romans 8:21-22

21 because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious

liberty of the children of God.

22 For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now.

3) One God..

Deuteronomy 6:4

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD.”

What the JW's misunderstand is that God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are one in essence not absolute.

For example, The key word “one” (Hebrew achad) is often used to denote unity in diversity. For example, when

Eve was united to Adam in marriage, they were said to be “one flesh” (Genesis 2:24). Similarly, on the third day

of creation, the waters were “gathered together unto one place,” yet this gathering together was called “Seas”

(i.e., more than one sea, Genesis 1:9-10). Dr. Henry H. Morris, ICR

Update

JW's deny the deity of Christ and have changed God's word.

1 John 4:1-2

4 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God;

because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God:

Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God,

Rev 22:18-19

18 For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

No explanation is given in the footnotes of their Bible.

https://www.jw.org/en/publications/bible/nwt/books/acts/11/

Perhaps the Study Edition (which is not available online) provides some explanation.

However...this article explains (and uses a similar translation)

http://www.biblicalarchaeology.org/daily/people-cultures-in-the-bible/people-in-the-bible/barnabas-an-encouraging-early-church-leader/

I quote:

******

The Bible, however, shows that the name Christians was God-given.—Acts 11:26.

In the Christian Greek Scriptures, the verb used in connection with the new name, generally translated “were called,” is always associated with something supernatural, oracular, or divine. Scholars thus render it “to utter an oracle,” “divinely intimate,” or “to give a divine command or admonition, to teach from heaven.”

******

Young's Literal Translation (1800s) reads:

...the disciples also were divinely called first in Antioch Christians.

SO: I'm not arguing either for or against that reading.

BUT: there is some scholarship - definitely non-Witness scholarship (Biblical Archaeology Review is *very* reputable) - supporting that reading.

In the Christian Greek Scriptures, the verb (χρηματίσαι ) used in connection with the new name, generally translated “were called,” is always associated with something supernatural, oracular, or divine.

2. to give a response to those consulting an oracle (Diodorus 3, 6; 15, 10; Plutarch, mor., p. 435 c. (i. e. de defect. oracc. 46); several times in Lucian); hence, used of God in Josephus, Antiquities 5, 1, 14; 10, 1, 3; 11, 8, 4; universally, (dropping all reference to a previous consultation), to give a divine command or admonition, to teach from heaven ((Jeremiah 32:16 ())): with a dative of the person Job 40:3; passive followed by an infinitive (A. V. revealed etc.), Luke 2:26 (χρηματίζειν λόγους πρός τινα, Jeremiah 37:2 ()); passive, to be divinely commanded, admonished, instructed (R. V. warned of God), Matthew 2:12, 22; Acts 10:22; Hebrews 8:5; Hebrews 11:7 (this passive use is hardly found elsewhere except in Josephus, Antiquities 3, 8, 8; (11, 8, 4); cf. Acts 11:26

Young's Literal Translation

and having found him, he brought him to Antioch, and it came to pass that they a whole year did assemble together in the assembly, and taught a great multitude, the disciples also were DIVINELY CALLED first in Antioch Christians.

it's to do with the verb for 'to be called', or 'to be named' - (χρηματίζω - chrématizó)... it originally meant to be revealed by an oracle, hence the connection to the divine... it later came to mean to name oneself from one's public business' (polybius, diodorus, plutarch, others), or in general use, to receive a name, title, or to be called...

you shall get ignorant people arguing it is always connected with the divine, but this is not the case in romans 7:3 - 'so then, if she has sugarual relations with another man while her husband is still alive, she is called (χρηματίσει) an adulteress'...

you are correct, it is not in acts 11:26...

None issue as the Jw are horrendously famous for editing the holy scriptures; that's their BRAND - nwt book for their own use only.

"And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch." - Kings James Version

Different denominations will translate it to read differently to support their view points better. Is it right? No, of course not. Is it all the same thing when it is from scroll to book to online to e-book, yes.

We do not add or delete anything from the Bible. We respect and love God's Word the Bible. The New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures is the most accurate translation there is. What changes at Acts 11:26 are you saying we changed?

At Acts 11:26, the Bible shows the name "Christians" is a God-given name when it says they "were by divine providence called Christians."

As far as the word church, the Greek word translated “church” literally means “a calling forth", e.g., a gathering of people.

Here are other translations, (the first being the NWT for comparison) using different words with the same meaning such as "gathering together", "assembly", "congregation", "church":

Acts 11:26: "After he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year they assembled with them in the congregation and taught quite a crowd, and it was first in Antioch that the disciples were by divine providence called Christians." NWT

Acts 11:26: "And having found him, he brought him to Antioch. And so it was with them that for a whole year they were gathered together in the assembly and taught a large crowd: and the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch". Darby Bible Translation

Acts 11:26: "and having found him, he brought him to Antioch, and it came to pass that they a whole year did assemble together in the assembly, and taught a great multitude, the disciples also were divinely called first in Antioch Christians." Young Literal Translation

Acts 11:26: "and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch." New International Version

Since the time of Moses, it has been God's law to gather and speak of God, it doesn't matter where:

Deuteronomy 31:1: "Gather the people together, the men, the women, the children, and your foreign resident who is within your cities, in order that they may listen and learn about and fear Jehovah your God and take care to carry out all the words of this Law."

That's because they use a wrong translation of the Bible.
