Question:
Why did Iblis not bow down to Adam- isn't he more of a monotheist than God Himself asked?

To bow to Adam is the revere an idol. Perhaps Iblis knew this and his love for Allah was so great that he could not even obey His command because he understood what that would mean in the big picture.

Is it not true that the only exception for obeying your parents if they ask you to do what is haram? Iblis was just showing us that reverence to anyone but the One God is a bad thing, and he paid the ultimate price. He showed the greatest act of love that he could and God rejected him for it.

Is it not man who is to blame for taking pride in being an idol or was it in His own arrogance that He breathed life into us? Has the God of the worlds abandoned us because he is ashamed at his own hubris in the creation of humanity?

He did not bow down because he was jealous it is as simple as that. It does not mean he was revering him as an idol at all. What a nonsense excuse lol... If Allah (swt) instructs you to do something you are supposed to do it, having free will he choose that will to not follow Allah (swt) instruction.

You are to blame for your own actions and how does life being given to us = arrogance and pride? No God has not abandoned us he has given us free will, how we choose to use it is our choice. You do not want to follow what God instructs, that's your call. Me I prefer to follow Allah (swt) revelations and enjoy this life he blessed me with.

EDIT

''To make the Jinn obey you is a major haram even mentioned in the Quran. Why would Allah ask that those made of light obey those made of mud and pride?''

Jinn are made of fire, have free will, marry, procreate, eat and drink.

Angles are made of light, have no free will, do not marry, do not procreate and do not eat and drink.

How do you ''make'' Jinn obey exactly? A major sin for who? Sorry you are not making sense...

According to Islam there are 3 races with a higher intelligence. Angels, Jinns, and Humans. Jinns and Humans have free will, meaning they can choose to go against God and nature. Angels have no free will, they are in complete balance with God and nature and cannot choose to be otherwise.

Iblis was one of the greatest Jinns who use to be loyal to God, but when Humans were created, he believed that he was a higher being than humans, therefore he chose to go against God and therefore his greatest crime was pride.

The Qur'an portrays Iblis, or Satan, as a jinn. The Qur'an says: "Call to mind, when We commanded the angels, submit to Adam, they all submitted, but Iblis did not; he refused and was arrogant." Submit does not necessarily mean to bow down or worship. When we submit to a higher authority, that is not the same thing as worship.

I found this explanation from a Muslim: Satan never repented to God not only this but Satan also argued and challenged God, while Adam repented to God so God forgave him. God says in the Quran:

( 38-74 ) Except Iblees; he was arrogant and became among the disbelievers.

( 7-14 ) [Satan] said, "Reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected."

( 7-15 ) [Allah] said, "Indeed, you are of those reprieved."

( 7-16 ) [Satan] said, "Because You have put me in error, I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path.

( 7-17 ) Then I will come to them from before them and from behind them and on their right and on their left, and You will not find most of them grateful [to You]."

( 7-18 ) [Allah] said, "Get out of Paradise, reproached and expelled. Whoever follows you among them - I will surely fill Hell with you, all together."

Iblis was Not ordered to bow down to Adam , that is a mistranslation for the Qura'an , Allah ordered the angels and Iblis to obey Adam and Sanctify him , but Iblis refused to do it because he thought he's better than Adam , he Adam that's why he refused God's order
