Question:
Do you have an open or a closed mind when it comes to the Bible?

Do you compare the Bible to mythology? Could it simply be that some people are so invested in their personal beliefs that they refuse to honestly weigh the evidence? “The truth is, few people have an open mind, especially about matters of religion. . . . Thus, perverted doctrines and prejudices are easily perpetuated from one generation to another” (Erwin Lutzer).

Just curious....

Well those who have not been enabled by the Holy Spirit have a closed mind towards the Bible, they can only understand it through the power of the Holy Spirit.

1 Cor. 2:14 explains that.

The Bible is Not a Myth Because of: Historical Characters

Unlike mythology, the Bible has a historical framework. Its characters are real people living in verifiable locations during historical events. The Bible mentions Nebuchadnezzar, Sennacherib, Cyrus, Herod, Felix, Pilate, and many other historical figures. Its history coincides with that of many nations, including the Egyptian, Hittite, Persian, Babylonian, and Roman empires. The events of the Bible take place in geographical areas such as Canaan, Syria, Egypt, Mesopotamia, and others. All this certifiable detail refutes the idea that the Bible is mere mythology.

The Bible is Not a Myth Because of: Scientific Confirmation

Unlike mythology, the Bible has many confirmations in sciences such as biology, geology, astronomy, and archaeology. The field of biblical archaeology has absolutely exploded in the last century and a half, during which time hundreds of thousands of artifacts have been discovered. Just one example: at one time, skeptics used the Bible’s references to the Hittite civilization as “proof” that the Bible was a myth. There was never any such people as the “Hittites,” according to the science of the day. However, in 1876, the first of a series of discoveries was made, and now the existence of the ancient Hittite civilization is well documented. Archaeology continues to bolster the Bible’s historicity. As Dr. Henry M. Morris has remarked, “There exists today not one unquestionable find of archaeology that proves the Bible to be in error at any point.”

The Bible is Not a Myth Because of: Historical Presentation

Unlike mythology, the Bible is written as history. Luke wrote his Gospel as “an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us . . . just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses.” Luke claims that he had “carefully investigated everything from the beginning” and so wrote “an orderly account . . . so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught” (see Luke 1:1-4). Did Luke include miracles in his account? Yes, many of them. But they were miracles verified by eyewitnesses. Two thousand years later, a skeptic might call Luke’s account a “myth,” but the burden of proof rests with the skeptic. The account itself is a carefully investigated historical document.

I agree that many have closed minds to the Bible. I, myself, try and keep an open mind but as I read and study the Bible both in context and historically, I find that my mind is not so acceptable to other religions. I am a Christian and I have felt the presence of the Holy Spirit and after a few years have learned to listen to him. I feel once you have come that far in your relationship with Jesus, it is hard to look at other religions with an open mind. Don't get me wrong I still read and look at other religions but for now they only serve to strengthen my resolve as a Christian.

I would like to think I have an open mind... I believe the bible is big enough and powerful enough to answer all questions if we know how to find them. I try to honestly study topics, and look for as much information in the bible and historical information as possible on a subject. I'm willing to hear other points of view on the bible's interpretation, even if I don't agree, and I try my best to verify each point of view I hear, so on and so forth.

Open for sure. Its the book of books to those who read it with a regenerated spirit. Thing about this particular book is that its not a ' take it at face value" kind of book. The Words within are actually Spirit and are Life.

The key to realizing what is contained therein is to know the Person who wrote it, or at least, be a little open to knowing Him. The book will only mean something to you, if the Person who wrote it means something to you in some measure.

Its like reading someone elses love letter and not feeling anything because you do not know the love connection or have not personally experienced love yourself. Things mean more when there is a personal touch. This is just my own experience. Thanks for the question sister.

I am still learning about God and my mind is open as was the minds of the Bereans. I hear new understandings of the bible and then ensure that no other scriptures contradict this, new to me, understanding before I will then decide if it is from God.

While I started my study of the bible over 60 years ago, the word of God is new, yet unchanged, every morning.

Millions die every year having bet their eternal souls that the Bible is not true, hoping against hope that it is nothing but a book of mythology, and that God does not exist. It is a risky gamble, and the stakes are very high. We urge everyone to read the Bible with an open mind; let it speak for itself, and may you find that God’s Word is truth (John 17:17).

Here is the Bible`s own words on what stops people in taking the step to faith in Christ. 1 John 2

Do Not Love the World

15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. 17 The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.

The lust for sin, the love for sin, and human pride. Every Christian know this, because this is their daily fight that does not stop before death. Most unbelievers "know" this, but are unwilling to take the steps to solve it. It is better to hide in the dark, then to "loose face". However this transformation can never happen without in the grace of God. Ask for this grace with a humble heart, and you will have it.

And of cause the classical words in 1 Corinthians

The Wisdom of God

18 For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written,

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,

And the cleverness of the clever I will set aside.”

20 Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. 22 For indeed Jews ask for signs and Greeks search for wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness, 24 but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

Yes. I read it ( and all the extant "lost" gospels). I did it with an open mind. Not starting out from a position of rejection but also not letting myself be tainted by what the religious say about it. Ignoring the ultimate question of weather there is a god or not, my reading showed that Christians don't even understand the book they base their religion on.

Most people who call the Bible a myth have not studied the facts of the Bible. It is historically correct and accurate. It has foretold future events that actually took place, that is scientifically impossible. Careful study of the Bible will reveal it is truly an amazing book. A myth? Not even close. I have been studying the Bible almost daily for 30 years. There is no error in it. I haven't devoted most of my life to a lie. Nor would I ever do so. If you just take an open minded look at the facts surrounding the Bible, you may conclude it is a supernatural book. Just because we can't see the supernatural doesn't mean it doesn't exist. We can't see electricity but we see the evidence of it. We can't see God, but we can see evidence of him all around us, if we will just be willing to open our eye's. There's plenty of information about Bible facts online if your open to it.

I've read it. I know what it says. I know where it came from. I don't treat it as a horoscope or ju-ju. I'm always ready to listen to someone else's interpretation, but that doesn't necessarily mean I'll agree with them.

The Bible, as with many other publishing's were written by man...

In the beginning, there were no books, no clergy, liaisons, rites or rituals needed to secure man's Faith. It was iron-clad! There was only man and his Source; God, the Father. Since then we have been divided - from -. This void has created an abyss of obstruction in most relationships, that would naturally be cultivated with The One Source of All.

The truth is: Truth can never be found here on earth and, it is Truth that sets us free. One must seek within his own being to learn this Truth for himself.

I have been Christian all my life (60 yrs.) until five or six years ago. Thanks to someone here who taught a Bible-teaching class, I began questioning certain parts in the Old Testament. From the beginning, she could not give me sufficient answers for pertinent questions I asked. So I asked in The Only One who could give me Truth - The Source of All there is. Now I stay focused on my relationship. I must be patient for some answers to come but, Truth shall always prevail! :D

Peace and Blessings always...

* I truly believe that the Bible is but a stepping stone to Almighty Truth.
Consider this.....

The heart rules the mind in all.

It is nothing to do with open or closed mind and everything to do with the state of the heart. All live by their heart motive and none by the mind alone.

The sinful heart forbids the mind that which condemns. The changed heart sets the mind on service to the revelation of truth.

A mind steeped and trained in the traditions of men and used to depending upon self needs to be renewed and to learn to depend upon God for understanding.

As ever the great issue is a moral one and nothing to do with mental ability, intelligence so called, or education. Atheists show themselves such amazing fools when they fail to comprehend this.

I do have an open mind to it, which is why I don't believe in it. I'm open minded to the idea of it being false, as well as to it being true. But since there's no proof or evidence that it's true, I don't believe.

You can be SO open minded your brain falls out! Do you seriously expect me to belive the story about Adam & Eve & a talking snake when we KNOW evolution happened and further more we can prove it happened in several different ways?

Some parts of the bible may well be true other parts couldn't possibility be true because the Bible contradicts itself again & again & again.

well? i for one do not believe the bible is mythology. the message of the gospel of jeuss christ is true even the fact that jesus is alive till this day in his resurrected form is not a myth.

The bible brought me to faith in jesus, the gospel talks about remission of sins, which is a very great joy to experience.

Well, I like to think so (being an engineer type).

I was an agnostic/atheist until I was 33. At that point I investigated religions and god/God concepts for myself.

How about you? Are you so invested in the naturalistic world-view that any concept of God is thought to be "silly"?

The Bible originated in the mind of God, which makes it unique among all the treasures on earth. It reveals God’s eternal plan of redeeming the fallen human race. Yet many dismiss it as a book of mythology. They see little difference to it and many other religious texts that claim to convey a divine message.

The events of the Bible take place in geographical areas such as Canaan, Syria and Egypt.

Unlike mythology, the Bible contains an astounding number of fulfilled prophecies. Myths do not bother with prophecy, but fully one third of the Bible is prophecy. The Bible contains over 1,800 predictions concerning more than 700 separate subjects found in over 8,300 verses. The Old Testament contains more than 300 prophecies concerning Jesus Christ alone, many with amazing specificity. Numerous prophecies have already been fulfilled, and they have come to pass precisely as foretold. The mathematical odds of someone making this number of predictions and having every one of them come to pass are light-years beyond the realm of human possibility. These miraculous prophecies could only be accomplished with the supernatural guidance of Him who sees the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:9-10).

Unlike mythology, the Bible has transformed a countless number of lives. Yet many people allow the views of others—who have never seriously studied the Bible—to shape their own opinions. Each of us needs study it for ourselves. Put it to the test. Live by the Bible’s precepts and experience for yourself the dynamic and transforming power of this amazing Book. Apply its teachings on forgiveness and see how it can mend a broken relationship. Apply its teaching on faith and feel a calming presence in your heart even as you navigate through a difficult trial in your life. The Bible works. There is a reason Christians in various countries around the world risk their lives daily to expose others to the life-giving truth of this remarkable Book.

Ultimately, many who reject God and His revealed Word do so because of pride. They are so invested in their personal beliefs that they refuse to honestly weigh the evidence. To accept the Bible as true would require them to think seriously about God and their responsibility to Him. To accept the Bible as true might require a change of lifestyle. Much easier, they think, to dismiss it all as " just another book of mythology." I'm not closed minded like that. AiH
