Question:
Why can't Atheist say God?

I got into an arguement earlier to day simply because I was talking about how much fun a youth group was with some friends of mine (we went turkey bowling)
I'm atheist myself, and during the arguement with this heavily chrisitan girl who seriously needed to do some reading of the bible, I said "for god's sake" and now she won't shut up about me saying the name god.

So, quick question, why do so many Christians act like Atheist's cannot say "god" or "jesus" and act as though we cannot even walk into a church?

Ask her if she really believes Saturday belongs to the god Saturn and Thursday to Thor, and if not why does she call them that?

First of all you have the right to say whatever you want to. Second you're not truly an atheist, you haven't been convinced yet 'intellectually' of God. Third if this Christian girl was truly a christian she wouldn't try to bring you down like that instead either bring you towards 'the light' or treat you in a better manner. The way I see it I think she was losing the argument with you due to the lack of logical thinking and maybe a little bit of reasoning but either way sounds like you had the gold in the argument and last but not least find the facts for yourself don't go off of what people say. From what I see here looks like you do believe in God but having a hard time finding the true religion. Be patient and stay committed to reasoning and logical thinking you will find the truth.

I remember something similar when talking with a good friend of mine years back. She said "Oh, but you can say the name." At that point I told her that I can easily say the names of fictional characters, such as Tom Sawyer and Rhett Butler, but that does not in any way make them real.

Ask her if she knows that Thor is a god.

And Zeus.

And Poseidon.

And a few hundred others.

P.S. If she knows her bible she should be aware of the fact that "God" is a generic term, and not the name of the biblical almighty (Yahweh).

She's grasping at straws. It's just an idiomatic colloquialism. If it's someone who regards it as blasphemy, then you have the option of using other words (out of respect, not obligation), Like "for firetruck sake" (I think you know what I mean), and "Jebus" instead of "Jesus".

If it's not because of blasphemy, but because they think it's some sort of admonition of faith, tell them to go firetruck themselves.

A Christian friend was giving me flack about just that. I agreed with him that I should not say "God," and always said "little (g) god" afterwords, or at least until he got the point.

You should hear the things I tack the word god onto, christians however should cover their ears. It's just a word after all, I don't see why there is such a fuss.

Not only can I say "God," I can write "atheists" correctly: small A and an S at the end.

Some need to make their point. She made her point. The language of religion permeates the culture. Move on.

you remind her that language just so happens to be soemthing we all speak, and figures of speack are part of that language, oh god and jesus christ, and now figures of speach, they mean nothing,

and

unless she goes about saying 'oh s**t' and means literaly feaces

or b*****d and meaning fatherless child born out of wedlock, and many MANY more non literal speaches she really has no argument, and is only making herself look ignorant

Saying "Goddamnit" and "Jesus**ckingchrist" are terrific ways to unburden yourself. It's no biggie, since neither God nor Jesus exist.

God God God God God. There I said it. Happy now?
2009-11-18 15:15:33 UTC
Hahaha I've started saying "oh gods" just so I don't leave anyone out.

So next time you come across that girl, say "For Thor's sake" or something similar.

Walk into a church? Are you insane? That's as dangerous as garlic and wooden stakes to us Atheists...

I understand the concept of God and that is why I reject it.

She shouldn't go on and on, but she does have a point, why would you say for God's sake if you do not believe in God? Why would an atheist request that God damn someone to hell if he/she does not believe in either God or hell? No, I don't get it either.
