Question:
Why would being gay be a choice?
?
2013-08-29 21:04:26 UTC
Do you choose to be straight?
Would you choose a lifestyle that would cause you to be ostracized from your family and thought of as a negative person?
Someone actually said "If being gay was natural, then gay people would be able to conceive children."
That is the stupidest thing I ever heard. And yet this answer got over 4 thumbs up, so not only does this idiot think this, but 4 or more people agree with them. That's what's so wrong about this debate. The side who opposes homosexuality always makes arguments from ignorance.

And you know why a straight person is making such a big deal about this? Because if I was forbidden to get married to a woman, and if being heterosexual were considered a sin and a taboo, and people were protesting being straight and telling me that being straight will send me to Hell, then that would affect me. So putting myself in the shoes of these people, well it's just common sense.
But no, these homophones think people just choose to be gay and that it's all about sex. It's like they've never actually met a gay person. Guess what? Love can happen between two men, and having seen a few gay weddings myself, well it's beautiful. It's beautiful when anyone is in love, regardless of gender.
And if you want to keep saying it's unnatural then keep in mind that homosexuality is nothing new. And it's not something that just occurs in humans.
Maybe this is one reason being non religious is a good thing. It prevents you from being so judgmental and intolerant. At least it gets rid of the main reason to be.

Bein religious is not really the problem. I think the bible only states that homosexuality (or the act of having sex with someone of the same gender) is a sin ONCE. Only one time in the whole book. There are other things that are mentioned far more often. Adultery for example. Still nobody is going to outcast all people from society who have evere done this.

People choose what they want to believe. Ultraconservative morons with an inferiority complex often like to pick on the weak, so they're against gays or immigrants or whatever. The problem about religion here is mainly that without religion you'd actually need to argue... with religion you can just say "well, god doesn't like it!" Yeah... what a cool god.

im a lesbian, ive always known i was different, even as a kid. ive never had a crush on a boy in my class, but i have had crushes on the girls. ive grown up in a religious household and most of the people in my family think gays go to hell. i was taught as a kid that homosexuality is a sin, but that didn't make me straight. no one can choose to be gay, i mean who in their right mind would choose to be someone everyone shuns, humiliates, hurts? who would willingly choose to live this life? homosexuals are a lot better than most straight people when it comes to marriage, why? because they marry out of love, they don't care about money or if the person is sexy, they truly love that person. most straight marriages end in divorce, but homosexual marriages don't. the "normal" people need to take a lesson from the "sinners" because you know what else god said was a sin, divorce, but people still get them.

and if people hate homosexuals because they're "not natural" then shouldn't they hate houses, air conditioning, the internet, clothing, cars, electricity, electronics, etc. too because those things aren't natural. homosexuality is found in more than 100 different species, homosexuality is found in 1.

i never chose to be a lesbian, if i did have the choice i would be straight because my life would be a lot easier if i were.

Yeah the example you gave is one of the dumbest things i've ever heard as well. It's such a misunderstanding of what it means for something to be natural. Anything found in nature is by definition natural. It IS found in nature. Therefore, homosexuality is natural. This person is adding an additional condition to the definition of natural and it makes absolutely no sense.

Imho, two consenting adults of the same sex engaging in some sort of sexual activity is just as trivial as two consenting adults of the opposite sex. Many religious people are so obsessed with what other people do with their genitalia. It is just mind-boggling that they give a fvck.

Here's my question:

Hypothetically: If it was a choice - SO WHAT? How would that honestly make a difference? Gay sex doesn't actually hurt anybody - unless you do it wrong, ba-dum-tsh - so why do people care if it's a choice or not? Why is that such a sticking point for people?

@Chi Girl: You use the word "anomaly" as if there was some established "norm" being deviated from when that isn't the case with things that are naturally-occurring. I suspect you have no clue what you're talking about - which IS an established norm with you. ;)

"Being gay" is an identity someone may or may not adhere to, an orientation in which someone views the world. "Being gay" can also be described as a behavior someone engages in and therefore is a choice. Being gay is not like being straight because a majority of gay people have had a heterosexual experience, but most heterosexuals have never had a gay experience. Gay people are likely to have heterosexual fantasies during sex. Straight people are highly unlikely to have gay fantasies during sex. How do I know this? Because there has been extensive research on sexuality and sexual behavior. In one study, half the people reporting to have had a gay experience in the past year, did not identify as being gay. Most heterosexuals would say that counts as being gay. "Being gay" is a sense of identity. So being gay is not like being straight.

You don't choose to be straight because its the way you are suppose to be. When I was a kid like 4 or 5 I use to like boys. You can ask my family they would ask me angel do you like girls and I would say no I like boys and they would laugh lol. I even remember seeing a guy and thinking he looks kissable. But then I ran in to a naked chick magazine(thanks to my stepdad for showing it to me, iguess he didn't want me to be gay lol) and bam my life changed like that I was no longer gay which leaves me to believe homosexuals were confused as childs. I can assure I am 100% heterosexual today. I actually look back and im ashamed of it because my brother always makes fun of me for it.

"Would you choose a lifestyle that would cause you to be ostracized from your family and thought of as a negative person? "

That's the key.

In the 40's-50's people with tattoos were ostracized, disowned, insulted, beaten, and denied jobs and civility. But people went a head and got tattoos anyway.

In the 60's-70's men with long hair were ostracized, disowned, insulted, beaten, and denied jobs and civility. But people went a head grew their hair out anyway.

People with piercings, mohawks, Goth style, Punk style, and a dozen other things were ostracized, disowned, insulted, beaten, and denied jobs and civility. But people went a head did it anyway.

Why? Because they want to rebel, but they also want to be in a group. The negative attention automatically gives everyone in the group a uniting factor. No matter what else, you all know how it feels to be kicked out of a restaurant, or glared at, or spit on, or whatever.

It's a social alignment desire. That is why they would do it, and that is why they do it.

That is the answer to your question.

I hope it helps.

Yes gays choose not to be able to marry the person they love, the choose to get beat up because of their sexual orientation, and the choose to be gay enough were they commit suicide.

Being gay is not a choice, and it is not a sin.

This video dismantles every Bible-based argument against homosexuality:

Because everyone can control their actions. For example, millions are adhering to the Bible command to 'abstain from fornication'. They choose to control themselves and not engage in immorality. Everyone has sinful inclinations because we are imperfect but we can chose not to act on it.

Even though Christians do not condone homosexual relations, true Christians show kindness to all people. (Matthew 7:12) God wants us to “honor men of all sorts.” Therefore, genuine Christians are not homophobic. (1 Peter 2:17)

To judge righteous judgment is to "see through" the seeming situation, even when a person who believes he is gay does not "see it."

All people have gene sins of various types to different degrees. Do we have the choice to choose our actions despite our degenerate nature?

How come one person overcomes, and another totally fails?

How come a child may not like healthy broccoli and yet like it as he matures.

It is irresponsible to blame the rain or the sun simply because you fail to overcome, right?

I agree with what that guy says.

Being gay isn't natural.

Animals do that to show dominance everyonce in awhile they don't prefer gay sex, so don't pull that happens in nature bullshit.

It is a choice if you wanna choose to be attracted to men and be gay and not give a **** then whatever you chose it.

As long as it doesn't effect me and my children then I don't care.

You people just keep pushing your crap on us.

Lust is a danger to ones soul, free agency to choose for your selves is a gift from God to all of his children. we do unto our selves what we do and must suffer the punishment of a just God. is all I need say. gay is wrong and there are punishments set for the disobedient in this world and lust is the cause of many souls destruction.

i don't know, you only have to look at almost every animal species on earth and see their homosexuals to know it's natural.

Sexual orientation is never a choice. It develops through early childhood experiences. Which is why it is not a moral issue. Sexual behavior is always a choice, which is why it is a moral issue.

Is that why you're so anti-religion? Because you're gay? That would also explain you ranting like a hysterical woman.

You know it's different, but you do it anyway -- that's a choice.
