"Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes. "

Romans 10:4

One of many passages.

The New Testament does not say that we should stop following the Laws that were given to Moses.

It is the Ten Commandments, that Jesus based his teachings on.

However what Jesus did do was to change the emphasis of the way in which his followers should liver there lives.

The passage of scripture at records this is to be found in Matthew’s gospel and chapter 5.

If you compare the Law give to Moses to what is written here, Jesus basically change the “thou shalt not” to Blessed are those who”. I hope you will agree the principle are the same in both the law and this chapter.

You ask a loaded question. Christians did not "stop" following the oc law, they were never commanded to start keeping that law. Only anc. Israel was commanded to keep that covenant law. A covenant is a legally binding agreement between two parties, and Christians were never party to the old covenant. Once one became a Christian, they were party to the new covenant law of faith (Rom 3:27).

Your citation of Mt. 5:17-18 in part, ignores the context. Jesus was not referring to the legalities of the law but rather that which is found in the law (first 5 books) and the prophets (that written by the prophets) that has the potential to be fulfilled or destroyed, namely prophesies. If this were indeed about the legalities of the law not being altered down to jots and tittles, then why does He alter points of that law way beyond jots and tittles later in the same chapter?

I don't think eating shrimp is gonna send anyone to hell. You don't either do you???

There are no scriptures or doctrine in the Holy Bible that says to abolish the Old Testament. The three-year ministry of Jesus Christ, culminating in his death and resurrection and his establishment of his church, makes all the difference in the transition from the Old Testament or Covenant to the New Testament or Covenant. In those three short years he ushered in a new era of salvation, although the old era contained the seeds of the new. We Christians honor and revere the Old Testament, but we interpret it through Jesus Christ and the new era of salvation and fulfillment that he ushered in on the day he was born.

The Law of Moses is still binding. Christians are wrong when they believe the Law of Moses is done away with.

Stoning is only to be approved by the government. It is never our right as citizens to carry out the death penalty or punishments for crime on our own. We have no authority to do so, except when the authority is given by the government. And, the death penalty and punishment should be done in a moral and biblical way that is glorifying to God.

Felicia,

Paul wrote the "Old Law is for our learning" (ref). This tells me that we need to learn from it but not be held to it's ties. CHRIST came to free us from the Law and make a way into heaven for us. Have a great week!

Thanks,

I found this and thought it might answer your note above...

Matthew 5:17,18 Some say this passage proves the old law is still binding since Jesus did not come to destroy it, but it would stand till heaven and earth pass away. If so, then the whole law still stands since not one jot or tittle would pass away. This includes the law and prophets (v17), even the least commandments (v19) (animal sacrifices, circumcision, etc.). Yet we have earlier proved that many things were removed. Hence this passage cannot prove the law is still in effect.

The parallel in Luke 16:17 shows that "till heaven and earth pass away" means "it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away." So it would be easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for the law to pass away "till all be fulfilled" (v18). But Jesus came to fulfill it! So the law passed away when Jesus fulfilled it. (Cf. Matt. 24:34).

Jesus Christ is the New covenant.

the Law remains but some portion of it ... the ceremonial part ... is void AFTER Jesus.

Acts 10.13 And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.

1. God showed Peter that in this New covenant, the food or dietary Law is changed.

2. the sacrificial part -- animal sacrifice is stopped after Jesus who Himself replaced animal sacrifice with the sacrifice of Himself on the cross, His Sinless Blood shed for us.

3. the entry of gentiles into the kingdom of heaven = preach the gospel to the ENDS OF THE EARTH ie. to everyone, rich or poor, black or white of whatever religious persuasion.

Other than these parts of the New Covenant, the rest of the Covenant remains intact. This means the Mosaic Law rules.

In the Book Of Mormon, when Jesus was born in Jerusalem, some of the people thought this was a signal to stop sacrificing sheep and whatnot. No... was the answer. Not until Jesus is crucified and resurrected. So when Jesus appeared to the Nephites and The Lamanites this was the sign that animal sacrifice was over. Interestingly enough the Doctrine And Covenants explain that if and when the Jews want to sacrifice an animal it is O.K. (do not condemn them). I think it has something to do with the prophecy about Jews returning to Israel and building a Temple but the details of it escapes me. Not something I have to worry about in my daily life. Not being a Jew or in Jerusalem and not having a Temple to sacrifice animals at, at the wailing wall. On a different note the Book Of Mormon goes out it's way to show the consistency by which the ancient Bible prophets are consistent with Jesus Christ's own teachings. So much so that when I read your question I suspected you to be a Mormon. If you are... good for you. If not same thing. Anyway to summarize, Jesus is the Son Of God and all the Prophets throughout the ages are his (Jesus Christ's) emissaries. Moses, Nephi, Gorden B. Hinckely, Brigham Young... You name it. If Jesus says they are a Prophet... they are. Whatever time a person lives in, the only way to know, is to bow down and pray to God The Father in the name of Jesus Christ, and get the unvarnished truth from God himself. Same as Moses, same as Joseph Smith, same as anybody. Just like the lady at the Temple saw the baby Jesus and knew that he was the Christ, so too can anyone know the truth of who and who is not the Prophet Of The True God in the day they live in. Always has been always will be. The lady just mentioned was righteous and fasted and was chaste and goodly and attended the Temple all the time. So we see that Godly knowledge is the result of righteousness. A person will see Jesus, and know who the Prophet is. But it is important to be righteous for this to happen. Blessed are those who are pure in heart for they will see God. So moral purity and knowing who today's Prophet is go hand in hand. Fasting can always help that process... just like it helped the Jewish lady at the Temple so long ago. In the New Testament and The Book Of Mormon Jesus quotes Old Testament prophets continuously. Proof positive that there is no inconsistency between the old and the New Testament. " I came NOT to destroy the law and the Prophets, but to FULFILL the Prophets" . The whole animal sacrifice ritual was to remind people of Jesus Christ. Now it is the Sacrament ritual that does that mainly. So all ritual is to remind the Christian to look to Christ and only Christ as the Lamb who will take away all sins. Jesus is the bread of life, and is like manna from Heaven. For those who are sincere and repent with all their hearts, and do NOT get confused by people, or preachers, that tell people 'Grace means that any dirty rotten sin is a.o.k.'. Only being pure like Jesus Christ was pure will enable the atonement. Like a persons own animal sacrifice so to speak. You give all that you have and he washes away your sins. And eternity is a long time to enjoy that blessing. To say the least. And Christ's love is infinite. So sacrificing by giving up sin rather than animal sacrifice is the ultimate way to get close to Jesus. And it is also the way to really experience his love on a totally higher level. So say the ancient Prophets. So said Jesus. So says modern Prophets including Joseph Smith. And I myself believe they all agree and they are all correct 100%. Get rid of all sin. Love Jesus 100%.

Christians from a non-Jewish historic past extremely on no account extremely accompanied it. you could study a communicate relating to the question if the ought to or no longer in Acts 15. the end results of that communicate grow to be "no". So Christians on no account accompanied it, different than those from a Jewish historic past. i do no longer understand whilst that stopped, perchance they have been only outnumbered by the Christians from a non-Jewish historic past. i've got study that once the 1st 2 centuries, the church slowly tried to extinguish Jewish customs interior the church and likewise forbade the prepare of them to their contributors. the situation to get added information on that must be interior the writings of the early church fathers.

Depends on how you choose to interpret Mk 7, doesn't it? He presented the Two Great Commandments to cover the Ten Commandments, but most "Christians" reject this and still quote the Ten.

We can do anything we want...as long as we're willing to deal with the consequences. Words written in a book and accepted as "law" does not necessarily make them "good" laws....past or present

heb. 12:24to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

a new convenant was created making the old one obsolete...

romans 14:20 Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a man to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble. 21 It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother to fall.

22 So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the man who does not condemn himself by what he approves. 23But the man who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.

In the new testament. All over the place. Read Galatians for instance. It's not a 'lightweight' read, but that's what it is all about. It's a large part of the letter to the Romans too.

And if you want it from Jesus you could start with 'Man was not made for the sabbath, but the sabbath for man'.

How many times do I have to say this?

Christ Jesus FULFILLED all the OT laws, including this one.

We don't have to follow it anymore!

No, the 10 commandments are NOT irrelevant!

They are are telling us of God's nature, but you will note that there is NO PUNISHMENTS attatched to them, like there are to all the OT laws.

They are to be followed, but not as a means to achieving salvation-that is found only in Christ, as seen here:

John 14:6 (New International Version)

6Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Does Jesus say here that "no one comes to the Father, except through me PLUS following the 10 commandments"

No.

He says "no one comes to the Father EXCEPT THROUGH ME"

There is NOTHING ELSE that needs to be attatched to what Christ is saying here!

Does Jesus say ""I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me PLUS OBEYING THE OT LAWS?

No. He says BUT by Me!

Without ANYTHING ELSE ADDED!

Matthew 5:17 (New International Version)

1. Law Covenant obsolete - when Christ died:

Ephesians 2:14-16

14 For he is our peace, who made both one, and brake down the middle wall of partition,

***15 having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; ***

that he might create in himself of the two one new man, so making peace; 16 and might reconcile them both in one body unto God through the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: . .

***Hebrews 8:13 In that he saith, A new covenant he hath made the first old. But that which is becoming old and waxeth aged is nigh unto vanishing away.***

Galatians 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under a curse:

-----

2. Forcing obedience to one law of the Law Covenant forces obedience to all the laws!

Forcing this Voids Christ:

###Galatians 5:2-4 2 See! I, Paul, am telling YOU that if YOU become circumcised, Christ will be of no benefit to YOU. ###

***3 Moreover, I bear witness again to every man getting circumcised that he is under obligation to perform the whole Law. ***

4 YOU are parted from Christ, whoever YOU are that try to be declared righteous by means of law; YOU have fallen away from his undeserved kindness.

Galatians 5:18 But if ye are led by the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

---

---

3. Christ Law:

Galatians 6:2 . . .so fulfil the law of Christ.. . .

^^^^^^^^^^

Your application of what Jesus said "I have come to fulfill the law" is in error. So, Jesus did fulfill the law. He didn't say that we should keep it! Did he now?

The scripture when examined yields the truth!

Matthew 5:17,18, Think not that I came to destroy the law or the prophets: I came not to destroy, but to fulfil.

###18For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass away from the law, till all things be accomplished. (ASV)####

Here he says that until it has been accomplished it wouldn't pass away.

What does that mean? It means that once accomplished THAT IT SHALL PASS AWAY.

Later on, he showed how all things had been fulfilled, READ IT:

###Luke 24:44, And he said unto them, These are my words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must needs be fulfilled, which are written in the law of Moses, and the prophets, and the psalms, concerning me. ###

45Then opened he their mind, that they might understand the scriptures; 46and he said unto them, Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer, and rise again from the dead the third day; 47and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name unto all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48Ye are witnesses of these things. 49And behold, I send forth the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city, until ye be clothed with power from on high.

From this it is quite apparent that you are in error in your claims, in error and that you do not understand that the apostles were given all the teachings of Jesus and didn't teach anything he didn't support.

Thus from these things we can understand that the NT's teachings are in harmony, Jesus vis-a-vis his apostles and vice versa.

THE FOLLOWING VERSES INDICATE THAT THE OLD COVENANT CEASED AT JESUS' DEATH AND THE NEW COVENANT HE MADE IS SPIRITUAL - OF THE HEART. HE HAS LIFTED THE PHYSICAL COMMANDMENTS TO A HIGHER SPIRITUAL LEVEL, THE HOLY SPIRIT IN US ENABLING OBEDIENCE.

Hebrews 8:6

* The Message

But Jesus' priestly work far surpasses what these other priests do, since he's working from a far better plan. If the first plan—the old covenant—had worked out, a second wouldn't have been needed. But we know the first was found wanting, because God said, Heads up! The days are coming when I'll set up a new plan for dealing with Israel and Judah. I'll throw out the old plan I set up with their ancestors when I led them by the hand out of Egypt. They didn't keep their part of the bargain, so I looked away and let it go. This new plan I'm making with Israel isn't going to be written on paper, isn't going to be chiselled in stone; This time I'm writing out the plan in them, carving it on the lining of their hearts. I'll be their God, they'll be my people. They won't go to school to learn about me, or buy a book called God in Five Easy Lessons. They'll all get to know me first hand, the little and the big, the small and the great. They'll get to know me by being kindly forgiven, with the slate of their sins forever wiped clean. By coming up with a new plan, a new covenant between God and his people, God put the old plan on the shelf. And there it stays, gathering dust.

Romans 2

28 A man is not a Jew if he is only one outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. 29 No, a man is a Jew if he is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a man's praise is not from men, but from God.

Romans 7:14

We know that the law is spiritual...

Romans 7:6

But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.

Matthew 5

21 "You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgement.'

22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgement.

27 "You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.'

28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

31"It has been said, 'Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.'

32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery.

33 "Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.'

34 But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne;

35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King.

36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black.

37 Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. 38"You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.'

39 But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person.

43 "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbour and hate your enemy.'

44 But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you...

HOWEVER,THE FOLLOWING VERSES INDICATE THAT THE LAWS OF CLEAN AND UNCLEAN MEAT STILL APPLY. I DO NOT EAT ANY FOOD DESIGNATED 'UNCLEAN' BY GOD.

Acts 10

12 It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles of the earth and birds of the air. 13 Then a voice told him, "Get up, Peter. Kill and eat."

14 "SURELY NOT, Lord!" Peter replied. "I have NEVER EATEN anything impure or unclean."

15 The voice spoke to him a second time, "Do not call anything impure that God has made clean."

16 This happened THREE TIMES...

25 As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him...

28 He said to them: "You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with a Gentile or visit him. But God has shown me that I should not call any MAN impure or unclean.

God used unclean meats as an example but was referring to Cornelius, a Gentile.

Peter said 'NO' to God three times that he had never eaten unclean meats.

If the unclean foods were changed to clean, Jesus could have put Peter straight during the 3 1/2 years they were together.
