Question:
Why do many theists waste their time in trying to demolish atheism?

shouldn't they be more concerned with grounding why one should believe in a god at all. All of a theist's claims boil down to how miserable the life of an atheist is, but fail completely to provide evidence for the existence a god:

«Some religious critics prefer to attack the unpopular ideas associated with atheism rather than face the challenge of atheism directly. Indeed, it is not uncommon to find entire books with the expressed intent of demolishing atheism, but which fail to discuss such basic issues as why one should believe in a god at all.» —GEORGE H. SMITH.

It's easier to attack a "problem" that is meaningless, where all you have to do is demonize those that choose to believe differently, rather than take a positive action to solve a real problem.

1. Same reason Republicans and Democrats attack each other. Two rival gangs.

2. In the perception of some theists, if you don't believe, you're gonna burn. As naturally caring people, they would rather you didn't, so they go for what they see as the source of danger: your "false belief".

3. Atheism, going back to the time when it was a minority culture that had to watch its back, has had to live by its wits: so it now has some very good arguments at its disposal that many theists don't have the intellectual equipment to deal with. Feeling cornered, they fight back. It's not a pretty sight.

4. Again in the perception of some theists, atheism is a disease which runs the risk of spreading through the whole of society, so if the number of carriers could be reduced it won't spread so fast.

5. If God exists, people who think he doesn't are making a pretty serious mistake; so theists feel they are on a mission in the way that, say, Democrats might be confronted by someone who thinks Obama has links with Islamic terrorism.

A true battle for ideas is never a waste of time; but if the argument is set up on the basis of "where is your evidence for the existence of God" it is likely to get nowhere because it isn't a sensible question. A lot of atheistic argument, and a lot of theistic counter-argument, falls at the first hurdle because both sides make the mistake of thinking "God exists" is a testable scientific hypothesis. It's an entirely different kind of statement.

I totally agree with you.

I think that the worst thing, is when they come attacking us with the following two things:

1- With these "scientific theories".

a. An atheist doesn't have to believe in science and Evolution. The only thing that an atheist has to believe in is in the nonexistence of a god.

b. Most of these theories could be explained by the correct person, but they always come to us, like if we were Stephen Hawking himself.

c. And also, they appear to believe that every single temporal (because science has proved that eventually it answers the questions for which we didn't have an answer) lack of information in science means that there is a God. It is not like that. Nature is never wrong, what is wrong is the things that we think we know and understand about it.

d. And of course, they come like if they knew what Evolution is with the argument "Atheist, rocks and water can't think, do they?". What else can you say to them apart from 'Go to sleep' or 'Ignorant'?

2. With these 'I know everything about everyone' theories.

It is impossible that they know everything in the life of each person, and it is pathetic how they think that because the Bible tells they something, they can actually come to everyone like if they knew what they were talking about. Saying things like "Atheists can't love" or "Atheists deeply believe in God" or "Atheists live in misery and will burn in hell", make you sick. How ignorants they are, the more they talk, the more they drown themselves.

I'm sorry, I kinda let it go, and wrote too much. I hope this is not a problem and that you get my points.

Good luck,

They can't help themselves and they can't stand having people who don't believe the same things they do. Imagine what it would be like if everybody thought exactly alike; well ,that's exactly what the theists want. Everybody marching in lock step. Notice there is one person here who thinks science and atheism are the same thing. Some of them need to figure out what atheism is first.

This is simply not true. Have you ever heard of Christian apologism?

Atheists, what do you believe in?

1.)The bible doesn't exist

2.)suffocation=Evolution

3.)Things fall because of science

4.)All Atheists created mankind.

You Atheists tend to suffer from a rare, more aggressive form of unwanted self-importance. Atheists typically think they are smarted than everyone else, no matter what. Just trying to correct one of you on something, you better be prepared to be blasted away with some serious ******* logic. Many of you exhibit very serious cases of a persecution complex, believing that Secret Christian Anonymous Terrorists (SCAT) are trying to eradicate them by putting the word "God" in things.

Many of you atheists generally suffer under the delusion that religion somehow is the cause of all conflict and that it is directly responsible for every war and murder that has ever occurred in history. Yet many of you fail to realize that, with or without religion, there will always be stupid people in the world who will fervently believe anything they read.

Generally all atheists are Liberals, or Libertarians with serious superiority complexes who are often willing to argue with anyone, especially Christians. Atheists tend to gripe about how religious people say that they can't be moral. But if they don't believe in anything, why do they care about morality?

The truth is, Atheist's don't have morals. Given the chance they would rape and kill every member of your family, just because they have no morals. Atheist dictators have killed millions of people over the past century, because, you know, mass murder is the inevitable result when a community becomes too intolerant of outlandish dogmas and too fond of critical thinking.

The truth is- Atheists only get their knowledge of the Bible only by searching "bible contradictions" on Google.

Evolution has been disproven. Natural selection comes from the environment, but is not random. OK, maybe its not entirely random, but consider what information is there in the environment, there's a night, there's a day, there's an up and there is a down. A few more simple things like this. The proposal that it is possible to extract more information from the environment is absurd. Do you propose an additional source of information? If so, then you are not an evolutionist anymore, as evolutionist dogma dictates nothing but random sources of information.

If you admit that information can be destroyed through mutations (say, one codon gets replaced with all A's, producing a dysfunctional but maybe surviving organism--I hope you will not argue that mutations are impossible!), then how can it not be created by a symmetric mutation? A one-time, random event, that survives and replicates due to the mechanics of the machine (DNA, cells) itself as well as the surrounding environment.

Atheism is just too challenging I suppose.

Since we don't understand how a God could exist, that means he doesn't exist.

If only everyone were deep thinkers like we are.

Is there a category for indifference whether there is or isn't a God or a Devil or Heaven or Hell. Indiferencism perhaps.

Why are Christians so afraid of people who simply do not believe in any god?!!!! Surely it can only be because they are so afraid they may be right or it would not bother them!!!!!!

"Why do many theists waste their time in trying to demolish atheism?"

All rather quixotic, huh?

At a stretch there's a pun between chaotic and quixotic but I couldn't think how to make it work.

Oh, well; I had a good time anyway.

That's what atheists do too , they want to eliminate religion and the belief in a creator .
