are you saved? that is, trusting in Jesus for forgiveness of sin? that's the first step, but then each day you should study the Bible. do not just read it. but study it... you know what i mean? and i find it's best to do it methodically rather than scattered verses here and there. start with the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, and then read on through the rest of the new testament. then start at the beginning and read the OT.
since the internet came about, there are endless helps and study materials. below is one such site, which goes through the Bible verse by verse, first showing various translations of each verse, and at the bottom of the webpage for each verse are Biblical commentaries. well known Bible scholar Biblical commentaries, which especially for a new Bible student (or an old one like me) can be extremely helpful.

besides daily Bible study, there is also prayer. pray without ceasing, as the Bible says, and i don't mean rote prayers, but prayers from your heart. just talk to the Lord as you would a dear friend. stay in Jesus and the Holy Spirit will change you.
one other thing i highly suggest is Christian radio, talk radio, that is... it is full of sermons and Bible studies and the like. very informative. keeps you focused. i've been listening since the 80s and i've learned a lot. here is a link for an excellent Christian radio station, the Bott Radio Network, which you can listen to on-line, and likely they have a local station near you as well. God bless you, dear.
