Q. from a Jew to Christians?

I asked this last night, but I think that since it was so late I didn't get alot of responses, so I'm asking it again. Thanks for all your help:

Q. from a Jew for Christians?
This is a sincere question and is not being asked to offend people.
That being said, I read the new testament awhile ago and stumbled upon a verse I had heard rumors about, namely Luke 6:30.
This verse seems to say that if someone asks a person who believes in the NT for something that the believer should give it to the asker.
However, in discussions with christians, some have told me that I'm misunderstanding the verse.
So, I was looking for comments and clarification.
Thank you for your help.

Hmmmm, where do I start. Okay, first off read the whole chapter and understand the context of it. Next, when it states when someone asks for something give it to them. (Paraphrased) We must remember that if we give in and give in love we will get more to give. Why? Because we honestly do not own anything, it is all God's to begin with.



Besides, if you have the Holy Spirit within you and you are walking with God. Does anything else really matter? Salvation is the one thing you truly need and another person cannot take that away from you.

The only thing I think you are misunderstanding is that Jesus was not speaking to people who believe in the NT. Remember that Jesus was a Jew and was talking to Jewish people in this text, so he was talking to people who believe in the OT. Christians, by default, follow the Old AND New testaments. Outside of that, you are reading the text correctly... if people ask for something that we have the ability to provide, we are obligated to do it... however if you look at Matthew 7:6, we find a "cautionary" word from Jesus not to "cast our pearls before swine"... something we have that is of value, we shouldn't just give to someone who is going to do nothing with it (and for that matter doesn't have the capacity to utilize it properly). That would be foolish. So like with most stuff in the Bible... whether the Torah, The Chronicles, The Prophets, the rest of the old Testament or the New Testament... we are to be compassionate, but exercise a bit of common sense.

OKay. Wow. Where to begin? Let's start with one needs to be as innocent as a dove but as wise as a serpent. I'm not sure where that is. Don't give a drug addict $100.00. You'll never get it back and did you do the right thing by giving it to him. Secondly, submit all these things to God and wait for the direction of the Holy spirit. I asked for a job at the christian school where my kids attend, I did not get it. The administration prayed about it and decided to hire other people and not me. However, the blessing for me because of that decisin has been immeasurable. Also, is the asker being led by God or by satan. We must be able to discern such things. Discernment comes from God. For being a Jew, you sure knew right where to go to challenge a Christian! LOL.



Jesus is trying to impress on us to esteem people higher than things and to behave like the Ten Commandments tell us to, REGARDLESS of other peoples actions toward us.



It's like Jesus is teaching us to try to follow the example of God.

We take and take and take from God, and He keeps on giving.

Has He ever "demanded back" the oxygen we have breathed? Or the sunlight we have soaked up?



I'm glad you pointed this out. I'm sure that in the past, if someone took something of mine, I would demand it back. Now, let's see if my faith is strong enough to follow this teaching of Jesus Christ.

I think the passage is about charitableness. However, I think that this passage has to be seen in the light of Mt 22:36-40

In that passage Jesus gives two commandments (quoting Deuteronomy 6:5): Love God with whole mind, body... and Love your neighbor like yourself.

In other words, I think our works need to be defined by our love, but we also need to love ourselves, and not be used as a doormat.

The four Gospels are technically Old Testament. Jesus was talking to Jews, specifically His disciples. He was teaching them about love. He was preparing them to go out and spread the good news after He left. It does not mean that If you believe the New Testament that you have to do what anyone tells you to do. He was teaching Jews how to behave.

I think you should edit your question because in my NEW KING JAMES VERSION it says nothing about if the person believes in the NT. I will now type what it says. "Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask THEM back." That is what its says. conscious

"To everyone that asks, give, and from him who takes away your property, do not demand it back."



Third, there is a whole realm of actions outlined in this chapter.
