They 'were' the group, not just part. All three respectfully pursued other ventures. I don't recall any quarrels or bitter disagreements coming into play at all. They were strong as a christian group through the influential times of the 80's and early 90's. It was only appropriate that they split off because Toby was hip/hop driven, Kevin pursued a more grunge/soul/pop type sound and Michael was mainly rock/pop.

Toby went on a huge ministry tour with Kirk Franklin...

dc Talk is a prominent Christian rock/hip hop band, partly responsible for the rise in popularity of the Contemporary Christian music genre during the 1990s. The band is currently on indefinite hiatus since 2000; since then, the members of the band have been pursuing solo careers. The band, originally named DC Talk and later stylized as dc talk, was formed in the late 1980s in Lynchburg, Virginia by Toby McKeehan, Kevin Max Smith, and Michael Tait. It began as a hip hop group, but in the mid-90s changed their musical style to more of a pop/rock sound. In both instances, they found critical and commercial success in both the Christian music industry as well as the general market.[1] In 2000, the group was put on hiatus as its members pursued their individual solo careers

It was a part of God's "plan".
