Question:
What do you think of these quotes about "Creationism vs Evolution"?

"Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution." — Theodosius Dobzhansky (1973).

"Several thousand years ago, a small tribe of ignorant near-savages wrote various collections of myths, wild tales, lies, and gibberish. Over the centuries, these stories were embroidered, garbled, mutilated, and torn into small pieces that were then repeatedly shuffled. Finally, this material was badly translated into several languages successively. The resultant text, creationists feel, is the best guide to this complex and technical subject."

"It is a lot better to come from an evolved monkey than from a fallen angel." — Buy at Amazon.comMarcellin Boule.

"There is no theory of evolution. Evolution is a fact. The theory is of how it happened."

"Evolution is a 'theory', just like gravity. If you don't like it, go jump off a bridge."

"Why does the media insist on calling intelligent design an 'alternative' to the theory of evolution ? That's like saying pancakes are a good alternative to an internal combustion engine."

"Creationists make it sound as though a 'theory' is something you dreamt up after being drunk all night." — Isaac Asimov.

"By one count there are some 700 scientists with respectable academic credentials (out of a total of 480,000 U.S. earth and life scientists) who give credence to creation-science, the general theory that complex life forms did not evolve but appeared abruptly." — Newsweek, 1987.

"Evolution is both fact and theory. Creationism is neither."

"Geology shows that fossils are of different ages. Paleontology shows a fossil sequence, the list of species represented changes through time. Taxonomy shows biological relationships among species. Evolution is the explanation that threads it all together. Creationism is the practice of squeezing one's eyes shut and wailing: 'does not!'" — Dr. Pepper.

"Creationism is not a scientific alternative to natural selection any more than the stork theory is an alternative to sexual reproduction." — Hayes, 1996.

"If you need something to worship, then worship life all life, every last crawling bit of it ! We're all in this beauty together !" — Paul Muad'Dib Atreides.

It mystifies me how anyone could read the Bible as a straight narrative. The story of creation is an allegory. The authors were not scientists, there wasn't even a Hebrew word for science back then. Think about it, Darwin wasn't born until 1809. Science, evolution do not oppose each other but co-exist to glorify God.

And God created Primordial ooze, then came apes ...

What if Sarah Palin became VP. Jane Goodall's research will be banned and apes will be endangered.

I think the second is a bit over the top in describing how the scriptures were assembled, though it is more accurate than the creationist version.

Other than that I agree with them all, and I especially like the last from Paul Muad'Dib Atreides.

All good quotes, and as far as I can tell, all true.

EDIT: Wow, Matthew, doesn't your religion have a rule against lying?

Read the context. That line is an introduction to the chapter that deals with cumulative selection as a non-random process. It does not say that complexity proves a supernatural designer.

I like the pancakes as an alternative to internal combustion engine one.

At a casual glance they appear to true, even it some are a bit colorful.

We do know that evolution is a fact, and as many of us have done, it does not take much to objectively investigate creationism's claims and find out that they are completely baseless.

I particularly like the one from the distant future: Paul Muad'Dib Atreides. :)

Frankly, I don't have enough faith to believe in evolution because I've been studying the microbiolgy of our cells. They are amazingly balanced and have the quote 'I am Fearfully and wonderfully created by a master designer who cares for me' written all over them.

ATPase is like an Ion engine. It physically creates ATP from ADP by turning on its axis 100 times per second due to Potassium or Sodium Ions being driven from one side of the mitochondria to the other thanks to a voltage potential.

If you saw that sort of circuit anywhere but in a living being you would say 'Ah, someone created that'. So, using Occam's Razor, simplest is best ... if it looks created, it must be created. By the way ... that's just one of many examples I find in the human body of the complexity in design that holds our world together.

I like the one that said "religious war is about fighting over who has the better imaginary friend".

don't remember who said it though- not sure if on that site.

EDIT: wow- mattew- way to misquote people, you must work for the new york times, do you also quote shakespeare as saying "kill all the lawyers?" instead of (paraphrased) "the way to bring down a society is to kill all the lawyers?"

Creationism is a pseudo-science. "Pseudo" means "false." Apparently 65% of American Christians subscribe to this absurdity, however. There are a lot of stupid Americans out there.

1. If you leave your room in a mess, overtime, if you let it stay long enough, will it clean itself?

2. If you mix clay, leave it out in a open field long enough, will it eventually change into a man or a woman or even an animal?

Then how can anyone who call themself intelligent, believe that out of disorder, comes order without some sort of intelligent intervention.

They are quotes, so obviously the person quoted thought them to be real.

i really like that one. Totally true!

I think that they are opinions brought on by their own prejudice... nothing more, nothing less.

What I find interesting is the intollerance that these quotes display. Are you intollerant as well or do you prefer to shove your faith down another's throat as well?

Opinions are like posterior region orifices, everyone has one, and most of them stink. By the way this quote has not been trademarked, or copyrighted so feel free to use it to your hearts content.

If you deny the existence of God, then you should EXPECT to view all biblical accounts as gibberish and foolishness.

If you accept the existence of God, then the Bible is crystal-clear.

1 Corinthians 1:18 (NIV)

18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Romans 1:21-23

21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

Read the last sentence of the scripture above...sounds a lot like evolution to me.
