Lots of answers, but no one here really answers your question. Why I believe I am qualified to answer your question is because I have an education in Christianity through my pastoral education. I am a part of the Lutheran Church, known as a Catholic light church. You will find that the teachings from the Lutheran church will have strengths from the Evangelicals and the strengths from the Roman Catholics.
To answer your question, "is God real?" The answer is yes! 1 Corinthians 15:14 says "And if Christ has not been raised, then all our preaching is useless, and your faith is useless." In other words, if you can find Christ's bones then I would leave the church entirely. All Christians believe that Jesus is at the right hand of God the Father, with his body and all. Not even the first century Jews would deny the presence of Jesus Christ.
As to whether God has many names, God has defined His character throughout the Scriptures. John 5:39 quotes Jesus speaking to the Jews, "You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me!" Only Jesus Christ has paid the penalty for everybody's sins so that they can have eternal life, but unfortunately many people still reject Christ's work.
As for your ability to follow God, I myself thought I could work myself to perfection. A 16th Century man Martin Luther thought he could too strive to perfection, for the Roman Catholic church taught that he ought to be perfect. Then Luther read the book of Romans and found that the apostle Paul says in verse 7:18 "I want to do what is right, but I can't." Paul said earlier in 3:23-25:
"For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God's glorious standard. Yet God, with undeserved kindness, declares that we are righteous. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood."
*In short, it is God who saves us, not ourselves.*
It was on the cross where perfect Jesus died for our sins because we are not perfect.
Also, since you were raised in the Roman Catholic church I know that you are a baptized child of God and your name is written in heaven. You have a room in heaven with your name on it. I look forward to seeing you there.
As for understanding your battle between your sin and holy living, I would encourage you to read the entire book of Romans in simple English, the New Living Translation. It is only 16 short chapters. You can read this book at:

As for why Christianity and not any other religion, C. S. Lewis wrote the book "Mere Christianity." It is titled "Mere Christianity," for he is not going to direct you to a particular denomination. He will give you the basic meaning of being a Christian and its credibility in just over 200 pages in simple English.
