Question:
How long can any religion survive in the face of mounting scientific Facts?
2008-04-08 19:52:05 UTC
Yes, we once thought, or were taught, that the world was flat or maybe supported on the back of a turtle. And that earth was the center of the whole universe, and that stars were just 'holes' in the fabric of Space.
And demons and witches could 'posess' a body and could only be driven out by The Inquisistion. And after 9-11, we chanted "God bless America"! Please!! No more 'Blessings'! whew.
And we know that there were a dozen 'Books' of the bible that weren't included because those Books didn't agree with the main thoughts of The Church.
So when will Reality and Reason overwhelm the myth of all Religions? 100 years?

Oh come on. You know that superstition and mythology will never die.A thousand years or so from now people will probably laugh at those people in the ancient past that believed the Jesus myth so fervently. But they will probably have another superstition that's called "the truth."

The truth is that people of the Bible never said that the world was flat, because in Isaiah 40, God tells us that the world is a sphere and hangs on nothing.

You want scientific facts, then look to the Bible. It is infallible. God said in Leviticus 17 that there is life in the blood, but men did not realize this until modern times.

The real problem is that we think we are so intelligent that we can know all things. How far is it to the nearest star? Who truly knows? No one has been out there to find out. We do not really know how to triangulate outer space because we know that gravity has something to do with it and in a zero gravity place, we have no answers. All we have is a light through a tube.

Science is defined as being something we can observe with the five senses, disprovable (not provable, anyone can prove anything), and reproducible. If we can not do this, it can not be called science and is only a guess.

Now, if you truly want to know, then be serious and not take someones word without real facts.

Honey, you're confusing a whole bunch of issues that have nothing to do with each other. It has been pretty well established that religion and science address fundamentally different questions. Some trappings of religion may not survive scientific discoveries, but that only makes sense. After all, man is always going to try to explain the world around him, whether or not he has the sufficient tools and understanding.

But science cannot address the question of why the universe was created. It simply can't. It can TRY, but there is no way to gather evidence to know for sure. As long as we don't know why the universe was created and what put it into motion, there will be room for religion. As long as people see things which cannot be explained, there will be room for religion. And as long as we don't have a flawless, quantitative analysis of how the human brain works, there will be room for religion.

It's not at all surprising that religions would make erroneous claims. After all, every human civilization has always tried to explain the world around them, often without the tools and understanding we have today. It makes sense that the people in authority, including religious authority, would be expected and almost required to decide which of the explanations from their current time period were best. That doesn't mean that religion itself is without basis. You're confusing a lot of different processes and questions.

And by the way, I'm not entirely sure the demonic possession thing is out the window. I have seen some pretty bizarre things, including a minor exorcism that has yet to be satisfactorily explained to me by any theory of psychology.

Remember that it was the science of the time that taught us that the world was flat, that the Earth was the centre of the universe etc.etc. In fact, the history of science (viz reason) is a history of mistakes. It has perpetrated more falsities and myths than any religion could. Don't expect it to get things right any time soon!

Well, if we are going to be concerned with reality and reason, we can start with dispelling the myth that ancient man believed in a flat earth, and that books were removed from the Bible. You are repeating those fallacies for the same reason that religious folks repeat their fallacies. And that, I suppose, is why "mounting scientific facts" have yet to unseat religion.

What are you talking about? How does the world being round have anything to do with Religion?

And there were not dozens of legitimate Christian "books" that did not make it into the Bible, there were some books that were made by the enemies of Christianity who tried to deceive people and some other books made by well meaning souls who were not inspired by God.

Also you should read this story about the "God Particle" that may be found by the supercollider at CERN.

a day on earth is 24 hours, what about on saturn, how long is a day there. what about in heaven, how long is a day there. what the genisis says is correct. it is not to be taken litteral yes we catholics believe science can tell us a great deal, but scientist have made mistakes from the beginning however the bible never has made a mistake. even religions have made mistakes, but the bible never has. the bible tells about science and even passes it. the bible tells more about ancient cities and there location than any arciologist can tell it tells about rocket ships and commets it tells how to make a boat that could not flip over it talks about the best warfare stratigies and how to conquer. using science. all the important answeres to life are in the bible, so where is the science book that has all those answers?

acutally science and religion go hand and hand.

people are too closed-minded and take their religious books way, way, way, way, way too literally. especially back in the day when one could be accused of a crime if they make predictions that contradict the ideas of the church. how ridiculous is that?!?!

Reading about the ideas Albert Einstein had concerning this issue would be very interesting, I promise!

the most basic way the two come together is in the process of figuring out the universe itself. science answers what exactly is going on, religion answers why and for what purpose, the arts put enjoyment in the picture (:

Since time began, when man didn't understand who God is, man has sought reasons for his existence and the existence of the universe.

Man has dreamed up mythical gods, religious gods and scientific theory as their god.

All along the God of creation was the true God. He even went to the trouble to come down from Heaven and show mankind His love for all of those who will accept His sacrifice, by dieing in our place for our sins. Would any of the other gods love us so much? No.

How long will it take for religion to die out? I hope soon. How long will Jesus survive? God tells us that Heaven and Earth will pass away but, His Word will live forever.

Jesus is King of kings and Lord of lords forever.

Well today is more encouraging than ever. I think I heard a statistic that said something along the lines of 30% of today's youth are rationalists(atheists, agnostics, etc.). However, I think that the days of superstition and religion will never die. There will always be the people who believe in everything that religion puts forth. Like I said earlier though, as our society grows older it seems that our youth are progressing beyond the conforming ideals that religion puts forth.

As soon as quantum physics attains a unification theory, religion will take a really huge hit.

Very interesting question.

I'm not sure the two must be mutually exclusive.

Science confirms many religious histories, and science itself uses "faith" to jump from postulation/hypothesis to fact sometimes (i.e. jumping from microevolution to macroevolution). But very interesting question. I hope you get the answers you are seeking.

The God Yahweh is working on using His scientific knowledge to eliminate religion as we now know it as we speak and He will use The Bible to accomplish it.

depends what religion does with science. if religion doesnt try to pose as science then religion could last very long. and i have no problem with that.

We have no choice but to beleive in Allah till science can produce matter out of NOTHING, create atleast a single cell and give it life!! If that happens we can seriously doubtt the existance of god. Read Quran!

Mounting scientific facts? regarding what? Whether you like it or not, there are no "scientific facts" whatsoever that prove that God does or does not exist.
