Question:
Too many inconsistencies of the bible?

There are way too many discrepancies in the bible. Why should I believe it to its entirety?

The revelation says no one should tamper with the book, the bible should be incorruptible? no, not the bible, the revelation book. other books were written after Revelation. It is obviously not written by God due to inconsistencies.

I'm gonna be straight with you. Don't believe it in it's entirely if you don't want too. You're a human with free will, yeah?

Anywho, I'm a Christian, in that I try to follow Jesus' message of peace, love, etc.

However, I generally don't hold the belief of Biblical inerrancy (the position that the Bible is without error and free from contradiction). The separate books were written by theologians over a span of centuries and translated over and over throughout the ages. Inconsistencies and historical errors are to be expected.

I don't take all the stories in the Bible literal. Some could be, but others are probably just symbolic, you know?

Like, I don't really believe the universe was literally created in seven days. I believe in evolution and all that jazz.

I'm not gonna lie though, I suck at math, which is a major component of science. Heh. But, still, science fascinates me. I really dig anthropology, but I like learning about astronomy/astrophysics stuff, too.

But I digress.

I think the Bible full of generally good advice (Hehe. You know, besides the Old School stoning and stuff; I'm talking more New Testament "love thy neighbor" and "do unto others" stuff here).

What was that quote?

"The Bible tells you how to go to heaven, not how the heavens go"

Galileo or someone said that... or something to that effect.

Anywho, I guess I'm done babbling. I hope there was something coherent in there.

As a first step, you need to stop believing in your own inconsistencies.

Correct: Revelation says for no one to tamper with the prophecies in Revelation. You are right there. It only refers to the Revelation.

Wrong. But your wrong in that the other books were written after Revelation. They were written before Revelation.

Wrong. The Bible never says it is "incorruptible." You say that. The Bible makes no cover all declaration as to its own accuracy. Luke makes a comment about his own book: "I did it with careful investigation." Just like the Eyclopedia Brittanica, both books claim to be non-fiction and neither book claims to be written by God nor 100% accurate. A book does not have to be written by God or 100% accurate to be reliable and for us to trust the book.

Are there inconsistencies? Yes. I know of a handful -- exactly 5 -- and they don't change the story. My trust in Jesus does not depend upon me believing that Quirinius was governor of Syria at the time of the census.

You do know that there is 66 books in the bible written over the space of 4 thousand years so of course there is going to be "inconsistencies" as the books were never meant to be put together into one and be called the bible.

The books were given to us for that time and for the reasons of those times like the old testament and the new testament Jesus changes the old testament rules so why put them together in one book when the old is no longer what we live by.

The new testament is now how we live and by that message but people used to live by the old testament as it was for those times so yes GOD does change in what he thinks is right for us and until there is another testament saying different then revelations is the last one and that will have to happen before anything else can just like in the old testament.

There are too many to checklist. you do no longer ought to seem further than the 1st financial disaster. Genesis is stuffed with contradictions. case in point God instructed Adam that as quickly as he ate the forbidden fruit he will die even if later in the e book it says that Adam lived to be over 900 years previous. The order that God created issues such with the aid of fact the heavens and guy and the animals isn't consistent. The bible says that there are have been many languages. Later it says there became one language until the Tower of Babel fell. As I suggested, there are a number of others. those are merely some examples. EDIT - the individuals who declare the inconsistencies are with the aid of misinterpretation or loss of information or taking passages out of context ought to comprehend how vulnerable that argument is.

Just like life in general, the bible has to do with faith. Also, it is a teaching tool that shows mistakes of the past and how they were dealt with. It is up to you whether you want to believe it or not. No one should judge based on your beliefs. One of the great things about God is that He gave us the freedom to believe what we want to believe. And for every choice we make there are consequences good and bad. So for you there may be discrepencies, but others may be able to interpret it. Definetely something you should pray over.

Only God can reveal the meaning of his word, the bible. So if we want to know the truth we must ask God to show us meanings and give us understanding or we just guess.

If I wanted to know something written is spanish, I would go to someone that speaks spanish and ask them what it means so that I may understand what it says. Or I could look at it, not understanding, then say it means this or that: not knowing spanish, I could try to make it mean whatever i wanted, though this would not be the right interpretation. Many do this with the bible, it is God's word and only God can tell us the meaning of things and give us understanding too. Or we just guess or make something up. So go to God and ask him directly for the truth of his word. And God can do this through any bible, not just some but all.

hope this helps and take care.

That's it in a nutshell, an "omnipotent" god could not have "revealed" a book with so many inconsistencies and mistakes. Therefore, there is no omnipotent god, and their religion is nothing but poorly written mythology.

Go to books.google.com and download Bible Myths and their parallels to Other Religions by TW Doane. It was used at Harvard Divinity School, and states that theologians believe adam and eve to be a myth, which means there is no original sin. Therefore, christianity is redundant, as there is no need for a redeemer.(p. 17) There is also much more information in the book, which proves christian leaders just "cut and pasted" stories from other religions that were older than theirs.

This was taught to priests, so they know the bible is a myth, just like I do. but don't take my word for it, go read it for yourself.

There are no discrepancies in the Bible. It is the Word of God. He put it together for you to learn. Try reading slower.

You need to learn what Son of God means.

There are no discrepancies in the Bible only lack of understanding makes people say that.

The problem is not with the Bible. It is with sectarian translators who conform what the Bible actually says to support their preconceived beliefs.

There are no inconsistencies. It might seem that way, but when you dig deeper, you discover the true meaning.

You'll have to be more specific. What exactly do you feel is inconsistent?

you probably think that because you get a scripture here and there and try to take it out of context, you have to understand the whole Bible...to truly understand...
2009-10-05 14:04:21 UTC
You should never believe in something you don't understand. That's the beauty of life... that we get an opportunity to develop our understanding of truth... In fact according to the bible it is a sin to believe when you do not understand.
