Question:
Why do atheists say "oh my God" and "Jesus Christ"?
?
2015-09-13 09:59:39 UTC
In despair times atheists use the Lord's name in vain when they confess God doesn't real. When I call out my atheist friends using these phrases they blush. I've always wondered why.

Is it because they live a life in delusion and deny reality of the obvious existence of our Creator?

Never heard an atheist say "Thank Darwin it's Friday" or "oh my Darwin".

I'm not athiest but I say "oh my God" and "Jesus Christ!" I'm not Christian either, it's just something people say and I have picked up, passed on from generations. I have no disrespect for Christians, God or any other beliefs. My favourite curse phrase at the moment is "Judas Preist!" And I think they're an awesome band and again, no disrespect to Christians and Judas himself! Lol

Curse words are both cultural and emotional. We don't choose what words are curse words, just like you can't choose what words represent sadness or describe the temperature of something. If I started saying "It is so piglets out here, I wish I had a sweater!", nobody would have any clue what I was even saying. On top of that, it can be hard to choose which curses we use because they are usually invoked by an emotional response; logic plays little to no part in cursing the majority of the time. It is likely for these reasons that yes, most atheists do use religion-oriented swears, and they do so religiously, not because they believe in god, but because god is deeply rooted in the English language.

I'll tell you what, heaven or no heaven, no life can be as eternal as one that is lived out on the tongue of every american who stubs his or her toe in the morning, and be he mysterious or mundane, Jesus is living one hell of an afterlife.

Love answers by Kay, Dandintac & HereIAm! Made me chuckle.

I agree some words that become popular (for good or for bad) become part of our speech and everyday talk (turn-of-phrase or even slang terms) "oh my God" or (sometimes I will say Oh your God [LOL]) was seen in use way back in the 14th century. Jesus Christ was also used back in the day first as prayer and then a taboo exclamation, to just an exclamation of 'disbelief/ shock or express a grand happening.

To sight Darwin would be a bit much for anyone (no matter your religion or non). It almost seems like you are saying atheist see Darwin as a messiah-type. Which (knowing a few atheists, they don't). As Darwin produced a theory based on odd happening to birds on the galapagos islands (real simple explanation). Which opened the door for though oh how nature (or if you want to think God) creates animals to be able to adapt in such a way to change their biology to fit their environment. Making way for evolution, DNA research and a whole boat load of fascinating sciences.

@HereIAm- Even Holy Cow is used by people of Hindu faith.

I try no to use it, as it offends my parents. I also don't find it really necessary. I have used Holy Crap or What the Hell. Now that i have kids I try to keep it What the heck. I was raised hardcore Roman Catholic, but have so many friends of diversities and religions (or not). I try to expose them to everything and let them make up their own mind. Though my kids really like my children's illustrated bible from my first communion... it's a really beautiful book.

Sometimes I will say, "by grabthar's hammer you shall be avenged!"

LOL! I love that movie. It don't mean I believe in grabthar.... ;)

An atheist like myself say "oh my God" and "Jesus Christ" because that is a curse word and as someone else on here says a emotional response . Everybody else says oh my God and so we learn to say that also. Besides when something bad happens curse worthy we don t take the time to think should I say thank Darwin? .

When you say" Is it because they live a life in delusion and deny reality of the obvious existence of our Creator?

Never heard an atheist say "Thank Darwin it s Friday" or "oh my Darwin."

I seem to get the idea that you think people should say thank ___ (whoever you think is creator). We don t say thank Darwin because we don t think he is our creator! We view him as the person that found out about evolution.

I m sorry to say this but I have to deny the way you said the obvious existence of God . It would be great if there was lots of evidence God exists but the evidence says otherwise. Please nobody comment on this saying I m being insulting. It s my opinion.

More than likely, these people grew up in households where these things were said and live in a society where these saying are common place.

It's a turn of phrase. It doesn't mean anything to an Atheist. It's like saying "Holy mackerel".

Why do atheist say "oh my god and Jesus Christ "

We used to use it as a cover so people would not know we were atheist LOL

so we could infiltrate their religion LOL

now we use it as a secret pass word to fellow atheist

slowly we are changing to Just Oh my and god dam it

actually I have been an atheist for 33 years took me a conscious effort of two years of stop saying it

Give your friends time they will also

your progressive the bible says your not supposed to hang out with atheist let alone be friends

so your claim that they are in denial is wishful thinking

really picking minor societal sayings to convince yourself that they are not atheist

, because according to your religion they should not be your friends

wow I guess atheist are not evil and immoral you hang with them they are really just people and you call them your friends so you like something about them yet you claim they are deluded and deny reality . of god so that means god exist in reality

I say Rumpelstiltskin a lot does that mean Rumpelstiltskin exist ? I also say "Need a tissue " when someone sneezes instead of god bless you

so you have proof of god in reality so you can demonstrate god REALITY the state of things as it actually exist opposed to idealistic or notional idea of them OK show the god look up the word concept gods are concepts ideas like numbers are concepts something conceived in the mind and thoughts an idea its claimed

Most likely, these folks was raised within families exactly where this stuff had been stated as well as reside in the culture exactly where these types of stating are typical location.

It is a change associated with expression. It does not imply something for an Atheist. It is such as stating "Holy Day".

This reminds me some time back of a girl on Yahoo that said "People saying, "Oh My God" or "Jesus Christ" PROVED that " God existed". I emailed her and said based on her train of thought then there was also a Holy Cow and Mackerel. Needless to say, I got no reply. Hope she has grown up a bit since then. *chortle*

Habits are difficult to break for some people, and some people have no idea how often they say certain things; for example, do people realize how often they say, "...I mean..." and "... know what I mean?" and other space fillers in their daily lives? I think not. For the same reason, some people will utter expressions like, "dee-AHHHH-blos!" (as an exclammation of astonishment, shock, surprise) and not realize they said until afterward. There are others, for example, such things as cultural expressions of exclammation... "Oh, my God" is one popular one, and it is really meant as an expression of suprise or shock or disbelieve... not meant in any way with any religious connotation... otherwise, some religious zealots will have to step up and explain where the "Holy Macheral" and the "Holy Cow (perhaps from India where cows are considered sacred, or from the late Yankee baseball player turned commentator, Phil Rizzuto?) and the "Holy ****" are derived from...

because it has been moulded as curse word, from what was originally, calling out to your lord and father in prayer "Oh my God" + " look how do i deal with this what a situation!" or "wow my lord look at this I feel this way about this' historically in our society it started get used so much that it become relfex, an immediate response to something, meaningless and in vain, therefore they use God's name in vain, disrespecting the fearfully majestic holly name is an empty curse word. Thats where they go wrong and they dont realise it.

Historically we are are a religious nation built on the laws of God, but as time as passed, God has been majority kicked out, the remnants of the religious culture is curse words. unfortunate to say.

As someone who's an ex-atheist. I found it problematic to change the common words I would use in certain situation. For example I've dropped something value to me I would often say OH MY GOD or Jesus Christ. However, it's difficult to find other words to say rather than OMG or JC. It's like teaching yourself how to learn another language.
2015-09-14 05:04:58 UTC
Whilst you might think this is an astute question it isn't. These phrases have simply entered the lexicon of the English language. I often say "oh my god". It doesn't infer any belief in a god. Sometimes I say "bloody hell". I don't belive in hell let alone think it's a bloody place. This question is as weak as asking why you, a Christian, name the fourth/fifth (depends on your system) day of the week (Thursday) after an old Norse god.
?

Because those phrases have been so heavily ingrained in our brains, and our society has brainwashed us so much that its merely a slip of the tongue, its an exclamation of shock, a way to express disbelief, the words "Oh my God" and "Jesus Christ" mean nothing to us. It's like when people say, "******* hell!" when, say, they find out something totally horrifying

well some atheists believe If there is a bad there has to be a good so god exist but Satan is more powerful so that is what they will worship or believing that there was a delusional man who swore he was the son of god but not believing this it is kinda insulting like" Jesus Christ your a idiot" or just plain out it is a thing that everyone says to them it's just a word instead of a person so saying oh my God could be like you saying **** or **** just words that instantly come out of your mouth what you say is not always what you believe in it could just be raised listening to that being said :-)
2015-09-14 02:05:43 UTC
Im not atheist and I am not not atheist, Im a nothing cause I cant prove whether a God exists or not. But I still say that too and most others do because it is part of language. Just like how people say 'wow' and 'eh' etc.... its just a word and does not have to have principal meaning.

There are four forms of curse word:

Those pertaining to sex I.E f*ck c*nt d*ck

Those pertaining to deification I.E sh*t p*ss

Those pertaining to a social group. I.E the N word.

And then blasphemy.

Oh my God is an expression. It's no different from the fact that I've used I.E four times in this post and I can't speak Latin. Or saying Bless you when someone sneezes.

If anything it makes more sense for atheists to say it than you because if you did it you would be using the lords name in vain..

Everyone who says that says it as a curse word.

But when atheists do it, it's more than just a curse word. They are truly cursing the idea that a God or a Jesus Christ could possibly exist. In turn, they are cursing God and Jesus Christ, themselves.

The power of the almighty God is beyond our understanding. We are created as children of God; thus we are linked to God whether the atheist likes it or not. In times of distress, the link will kick in and reason why people evoke Oh my God or Jesus Christ. Same like why someone will help [w/out being told] a senior crossing a street.

As an atheist, yes, I do say "Oh my God" and "Jesus Christ" but it s no different to saying "For f*ck's sake". "F*ck" is not a thing that exists, is it? Much like God and any other deity.

I don't say “oh my God” or “Jesus Christ”. I never picked up the habit of using such swears, maybe because my grandmother once shoved soap in my mouth and I avoided using swear words she'd disapprove of.

Any atheist who does use such phrases would probably tell you they're just expressions to them. But though I'm not afraid of retribution anymore, still the closest I come to such phrases nowadays is an occasional “holy crap!”.
2015-09-16 02:59:43 UTC
The words have been around for a long time and part of the english language. They are used as exclamations and references to the feelings of the person who says these things, you don't need to be a theist to use these words. I am an atheist and I use the words 'f**k in hell!' fairly often followed by ' I hope they do or I'm not going'.

The same reason, religious use the atheist swear terms

F^ck, Sh!t, and Mother f^cker.

Using "oh my God" and "Jesus Christ" doesn't prove a deity.

I prefer "oh my Steve" and "Jesus Pete" (Jesus' atheistic brother).

On occasion, I'll mix it up with Holy Sh!t, Crap, Cow, or Mackerel.

Anyone can say these things and not believe in their literal existence. This is the worst argument against atheists possible. How does this prove your god is real? Holy crap. This is one of the dumbest arguments against atheism that I've seen in a while. When people say "Oh my god", it's just an expression not some declaration of belief in a god. See how I said "holy crap" earlier? It doesn't mean I believe in a divine piece of ****. Unless you count your "god".

The religious exclamation is just part of the euphemism game. Michael's Jackson's 'bad' doesn't necessarily mean immoral, unskillful or lacking in quality. It arguably means something like 'cool'. Same game here. Nothing to be embarrassed about.

P.s. Atheists don't necessarily believe in evolution. Highly likely they do, but not necessarily. The atheist badge only declares a lack of belief in god(s).
2015-09-15 00:10:18 UTC
"Oh My God" and "Jesus Christ" are figures of speech not to be taken literally. Just because they say them doesn't mean they believe in them. Just like how people say "What the Hell?"

A lot of Christians don't use the words "oh my God" because they find it offensive to God and use "oh my goodness" instead, so I'm kindoff confused by your question.

The final elements of 'oh my God' can mean goodness, gosh etc. You don't have to be religious to just use them words only because it had God in it.

I often wonder this too. I respect their beliefs and expect respect of mine in return. I used to think it was just used for "shock value," but then I realized it's just the way the words "feel." Most swear words have a "hard sound." "Hard sounds" feel a lot different inside the mouth than "soft sounds." For example: the "F-word" has a "hard sound" "G---D" has a harsher sound than "Damn." Another reason could be the association....We are constantly told which words are "bad words, " that we shouldn't use when we're little. As we get older, we get a little rebellious and use them. Even our society has an influence as to which words are "bad." I can remember when it was ok to say you're "pissed off" at something, but now "pissed" is a swear word.

It has more to do with linguistic habits, like swearing, than a latent belief in the supernatural. And taking or using "God's name in vain" only has significance for those who actually believe in such a being.

Even words like "bloody" have religious origins. It would have started as something like "B'Lady", a shortened version of the Old or Middle English for "By Our Lady". Many people who use the word probably wouldn't even associate it with its religious origin.

And many mightn't even be aware that phrases like "Jiminy Cricket" is a Euphemism for "Jesus Christ", or that "Golly Gee" is probably a euphemism for "Good God".

It doesn't mean anything other than that. I don't think that anyone has the right to restrict others' use of the language in the way you seem to want to, especially phrases that are used commonly.

Maybe habit developed during their childhood by being influenced by their peers and parents . Also depends on their cultural background. If their parents where christian or lived in a predominantly christian neighborhood ,they are likely to express some habits of their peers .Besides its only an expression of exclamation like s***t! ,f***k!. It doesn't necessarily mean the person believes in Jesus Christ or God .

Society uses it as a common figure of speech and people generally pick up on the things they frequently hear. I wouldn't have thought it would have been difficult to figure that out. No, there is no secret thing hidden within it, it's simply common, and if theists didn't want it to be used as a common figure of speech then I guess theists themselves should never used it in vein in the first place; they are the ones that made it common.

Are you unaware that many times, in a lively disagreement, one person may shout

"F[intercourse]K YOU!"

at a person for who they do not, at that moment, feel the slightest sexual attraction?

Shouting the names of any Gods or Goddesses is about expressing an emotion, not about imparting information about any of the many Gods or Goddesses in which people have ever believed.

In like manner, I have been called a

MOTHERF[intercourse]ER by people whose mothers I've never even MET.

There again, it's about expressing an emotion, not about informing me of anyone's sexual escapades.

As an atheist myself, I do catch myself saying both phrases. In my own opinion I think that it is but a colloquialism that people pick up through routine societal conventions and then it comes out in utterance. For me it's tantamount to a swear word - to show genuine dissatisfaction or surprise in a way many would relate to. Simple as that.

My favorite curse is "Jesus tap-dancing Christ!" Do the people who use it necessarily believe the Messiah is a tap-dancer? I've started making it a point to say "Baal" or "Baals" as a swear *because* I don't believe in the old gods. Do you take the name of a god in which you believe in vain? Do you want to go to hell? Because that's a good way to get a one-way ticket straight to hell.

They do not!

Chrsitians are the only ones who use their god and religious figures as oaths and swear words!

"Goddamn" for instance is a shortening of "God damn you to hell!"

What a nice religion - - NOT!!!

Is it just your weak faith that is the problem? Belief that Christianity is an attack group or simply that you cannot believe in a loving god and act as if you do?

They are common expressions. It's not like we think, 'hey, lets say "oh my god" even though we don't believe Him!' For example, people say 'holy ****!', but hardly anyone believes that shits are holy, do they?

Hence why Christians try to avoid these sayings, while atheists embrace them.

Yeah pretty much. Is it because we live a life in delusion and deny reality of the obvious existence of our Creator. Obviously the phrases mean nothing (good or bad) to Atheists so the only reason to use them is to show their complete disrespect for their fellow human beings who are hurt and insulted by them.

With love in Christ.

I try not to use god like blasphemies, as I am non religious, however as a mother and someone who works in a primary school, it s far politer to use the odd OMG or JC, instead of other words that start with s & rhyme with hit!

As quoited in the Bible, "thou shalt not use the name of the Lord thy God in vain", when these terms are used in a negative aspect, we are using the name in vain, thus lowering the value of the name to something we say during times of pain.

This is how I express my self as a Christian,,,As millions are gathered in his name,,,

We've waited for this day, we're gathered in your name. Let all creation sing, in wonder.

Every creature hi and low from heaven to below. Singing to your glory, like a fire awakening a desire.

So take me as you find me, all my fears and failures. Fill my life again, everything I believe in now I surrender.

For never once did we ever walk alone, never once did you leave us on our own. For with every step we're breathing in your grace. We are being carried by your constant grace, held, within your perfect peace.

The Lord has promised good to me. His word my hopes, secure in he, in he will my shield and portion be.

As long as life endures for me. Worthy is the lamb who was slain for me.

As a a Christian our faith in God, who accepts us for all our mistakes, and failures, for being a person who can never be perfect in anyway..

Until a person accepts Jesus as there savior they will never never understand for their their eyes are still blind to the power of his glory. A born again Christian has had the scales removed, and can see.and is humbled, by what he sees and feels. They are a new creation.

I do pray for the atheist to open their eyes before it is to late for them, and fire consumes them.

For no one should suffer on earth and have to endure the fires of hell.

a sentence from victor hugo in one of his books, says that: i have my life and even though my neighbor has his life, it is what god has given him. america has too much christian sentiment to NOT try to build peace for the country.

it does not seem to be their agenda; since,

it is different when the government and religion force the christian religion on others. it is different than the true spirit of humanistic wisdom and mercy in true faith and true religion. the real spirit is missing.

no wonder people use a christian god reference, then kick themselves for doing so.
